Fun fact: in German we have a term for violists who never played the violin before and started on the viola immediately. We call them "Edelbratscher" ("noble violists"). They are known to be preferred when it comes to getting contracts for world-class orchestras, so the assumption that violists who played the violin before are better in any way is less than true, even if intended as just a joke.
The main reason for that assumption is just that violas under 12" are rare, and as a result few people start on viola at ages younger than 8-9. Those who started on violin usually have a head start of several years. On the other hand, many people who switch from violin to viola never get as good a sound out of the viola as people who started on viola, because their bowing instincts are different.
@@andrewhcit I did an internship in a music school last semester and I worked with tiny violists - as young as six. And while I know many violinists who started as young as four, nobody can tell me that starting at six is any obstacle in becoming as good a musician as one could be - more than enough world-class instrumentalists started around six.

They always were saying the violists started on violin, but never considered other musicians (such as the flautist or ocarina player) may have started on something else as well.
I think the point is that the years on violin translate quite directly into skill on the viola (so a violist who plays as well as if she had played for 16 years might have spent 8 of those years building up skill on the violin) whereas learning another instrument might not be so directly transferrable. Like if a flautist transferred to violin after 8 years of flute, they might be ahead in terms of musical knowledge, but they would not be able to play the violin as if they had already been learning for 8 years (or 5-6) on day one.
@@grammarnazi12 But switching from flute to recorder, or recorder to ocarina, would definitely give the player a head start over a raw beginner. Many musicians play both clarinet and saxophone (especially if they are jazzers). Doubling is a norm for wind players. And musicality, phrasing, etc., can transfer between widely different instruments. I just found it interesting that Eddy and Brett only considered violinists switching to viola.
@@elissahunt ohhh I see your point. Haha I think that's probably because they are only familiar with violin and related instruments so that's what they would think of right away.
I’m not a musician but I love listening to classical music. Because of this channel, I want to try learning classical instruments so I can relate to them , and also to play my favorite baroque pieces hehe🥹. Btw, fell in love with this duo on 2018 ❤
Out of curiosity what would be the instruments you want to learn the most? I know even though I can play a few instruments already (bass clarinet, Bb clarinet, tenor saxophone, ukulele, and just started flute) I have many instruments I want to learn (violin, piano, and oboe being some of the top ones)
Just wanted to say that TwoSet motivated me to pick up the piano as my first instrument. I'm 32 have and been practicing almost every day for about 2.5 years total now and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Just bought my first violin 3 weeks ago, and man, the skill floor is really high! But the instrument itself is just so wonderful. Thank you for inspiring me to practice every day! Now, GO PRACTICE!
You know it’s gonna be a good day when TwoSet posts a video. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRETT!!! I hope you’re proud of how far you’ve come and what an inspiration you and Eddy have been to aspiring musicians like me!
Regarding Kira: adults can get pretty far on string instruments in relatively short amounts of time. It helps being more in tune with your body and more receptive to learning than kids are. Half the process of teaching kids is preventing them from breaking the instrument lol. And the other half is getting them to pay attention.
Not related but must say, as someone who isn't an English native speaker, australian accent is very hard to understand, but I'm so addicted to these two that I've reached a point I don't need subtitles anymore. Conclusion: other than pushing me to practice music you guys by accident improved my listening skills, thank you 🤣
Lmao same. I've been adapting to their Australian accent for the past many years and that helped me a lot to understand my first Australian manager ...
Yay! Fooled ya! I am at 2 months now with the violin and am keeping um with practicing every single day so far. Also, I’ve played the piano for 20 years and been singing opera for 14, so I’m not a noob to music, just to the violin.
proving two set wrong today: i’ve been playing the viola for years, first chair, and i never started with the violin and yet, i’ve complimented to be the best in my orchestra :)

I really love how these guys are insanely talented and appreciate talent on ANY instrument. The guitar guess was hilarious. As a 10 year guitarist, itd take me atleast 10 more years to hit those sweep runs as smoothly as he did.
Happy Birthday, Bret! Without TwoSet I probably would have never found my way onto the musical side of youtube and without that, I would never have picked up the guitar. I have so much respect for you and Eddie. Have a great Birthday you deserve it.
Hi twoset! Met some people you went to uni with yesterday at a family wedding. They were playing in a quartet. They told me that you were like the kids at the back of the section that always kind of messed around playing concertos while everyone was thinking “SHUT UP!” Lol. The guy I talked to was Dan, btw
This video calmed my doubts. I started learning to play the violin in November and I felt stuck recently. I don't really have comparison to others and to know a little how people sound after many years of practice was good to relax me a bit. On to practice!
Aye, one can get stuck and frustrated and have bad days when it's best to give up [that day] but it's all down to practice and I am making progress albeit slow [18 months on violin]. Some weeks my tutor just says after I've struggled through a piece I'm learning: "Well it's a lot better than last week" and a week does make a difference that only others can see/hear. Good luck and enjoy your practice...
The most impressive one taking the years played to account is the double bassist. Almost unreal. The violinist playing for 28 days doesn't seem unreal. I started with the guitar, then picked up the cello. In 28 days, I'd say I played similarly to her. She must've had some musical background.
Well, to be fair, I've been singing my whole life, am intermediate at guitar, and have watched at least half of all Twoset videos. It makes sense that people, with comparable experience, could learn quicker than a 6 year old, even if they are a 6 year old Brett or Eddy 😘
Y'know, when I was 12, I taught myself to play a song on the the keyboard using a slow-down feature, with no prior playing experience. It took me a full year. The song was from my favourite video game, which is how I had enough motivation to do it. The song is called "Mora The Spider" The piano version that I learned was played by Caliko (on youtube.) I dunno if that's impressive or not, but I sure practised as hard as I could for a year, and I knew zero music theory, and had only got that keyboard a couple months ago. Just start of this winter I started taking piano lessons and I'm learning grade 2 pieces, although I only have enough time to practice about an hour a week.
A little poem for the Birthday Maid: Dear Brett What an eventful year it has been You and Eddy, Twoset for the win! You've transformed into Maid Brett for (Eddy's) all our joy To witness you dance, oh boy, oh boy And early summer came You guys brought a project to fame Beautiful pieces: prelude, scherzo, adagio, rhapsody All wrapped up in a beautiful, stunning movie You made us dream of distant lands and broad hallways You brought us back to ourselves in the end, like always Then the debut of B2TSM How much more epic can it get, oh man! But this was not all you had in stock I have to admit it was quite a shock When you took on Blackpink As Paganini himself, and got all the hate from their Blinks Sell out rocked so hard It for sure broke my spotify chart! But the most wonderful, epic event Was simply Ling Ling and God sent Of course through your hard work, all the practice and dedication too Let us witness you guys playing Mendy, Bach and Pag with the SSO Not only that, you did it on TWO Strads! That just proves how much the world loves you, lads It remains till this day the most beautiful recording in my opinion So much passion, softness, fire and emotion After new year a new project One in order to protect Violin-chan from the bass gang It all went down with a huge bang The Twoset vs Davie504 concert Nothing like this has ever been done, correct? All in all, an epic year once again And I'm sure you guys will gain Even more followers, do more epic projects, meet more people, dream even bigger And we'll support you all the way, while you do everything with vigour Please though, take good care of yourselves Look after you, take breaks and sleep enough, for your healths And for now all is left to say Is, happy Birthday!!!
Before starting this I predict people will try to trick TwoSet with entries like "I've been playing the violin for 15 years but technically only the viola for 2"
Again, my submission is not selected, but just looking at all the LingLing's they've selected, I'm kinda glad that they didn't pick mine😂 But it's all good, I'm only two years into violin because of Twoset, I still sound bad, but I practiced a lot and I enjoyed the process, that's all what I need!! And I gotta say, I miss videos like this from you guys so much!! 😭😭😭 I look forward to your world tour but I also hope you guys can continue to make new videos... sorry I'm being greedy here. Take care!! Also have a splendid birthday, Brett!! Looking forward to the miracles that only 31-year-old Brett can create!!

I also miss their videos so much and feel kinda lonely without them. But I understand that they are doing a lot of other amazing stuff recently but still. 😭

They made a serious mistake when judging the organist, we don't have dynamic control from the keyboard. The keyboard is literally a switchboard, the note is either on or off. There is no dynamic sensitivity in the keys & pedals. Dynamic changes are controlled via swellboxes, and the registration of the instrument. (Organ performance student here)
In my experience, all adult violin students progress to a solid beginner level very very quickly. After that, the progress slows down to a more normal rate.

Which instrument are you thinking you'll try? I want to start too but I haven't chosen one.
I'd pick theorbo. Might be hard to find one though!
try a recorder!
Instruments - plural? Wow! Playing one is more than enough for me... But hey. go for it. Keep that dream in mind and take baby steps towards it!
🎉Happy birthday Brett🎉🎂Hope you enjoyed😊 Thank you guys for making me practice 🎻😊
"You're only good at the viola because you play violin" sounds a bit insulting, no?
certainly does. they just can't let go of their anti-viola prejudice
Yes. Even if it's true, they don't need to bring it up in EVERY video featuring a violist.
Always makes my days better. You guys are my inspiration for writing music, as well as practicing everyday
YOOO SECOND IT FEELS ILLEGAL TO BE THIS EARLY
That thumbnail is ,
SaCrALiJiOs1👏🏼✨
Conclusion: other than pushing me to practice music you guys by accident improved my listening skills, thank you 🤣
Onya, mate!
SAME LMAO
Lmao same. I've been adapting to their Australian accent for the past many years and that helped me a lot to understand my first Australian manager ...
Me realizing they are Aussie.
*So that's why they sound normal to me*
Really? For me it actually is more easy to understand than for example american accent
YAY! I'm so happy to see the ocarina made it on here!!! Really beautiful Chao!
Yay! Fooled ya! I am at 2 months now with the violin and am keeping um with practicing every single day so far.
Also, I’ve played the piano for 20 years and been singing opera for 14, so I’m not a noob to music, just to the violin.
good for you! hope you post more singing videos on your channel
@@oxoelfoxo Thanks! I probably will as soon as I get the chance for newer recordings.
May I ask what you were playing in this? I liked it a lot! ☺
@@mammamiia08 It's the vocal line of "Never gonna give you up" by Rick Astley. So effectively, I Rickrolled twoset. :D
@@ninijura 😲 well you got me too! Now I'm never gonna find anything like it anywhere tho 😩😂
proving two set wrong today:
i’ve been playing the viola for years, first chair, and i never started with the violin and yet, i’ve complimented to be the best in my orchestra :)
I can relate so much to Brett's enthusiasm all these classical pieces that he starts singing and dancing, I love it.
Well my takeaway from this is "you can progress faster than you think" which is pretty good :))
Seeing Eddy not that competitive to win this guess game with Brett for once and got emosional damage instead (from you all Ling Ling out there) is kind of refreshing. ☺️☺️☺️
PS: Happy 31st Birthday, Brett! 😘🎉
PSS: Idea for the next content: Since your lighting start to acting up, you should read horror stories related to classical music and freak yourselves out 🤭😏
I love how they both started playing an invisible violin at 9:12 😂
Also, with the flutist at 9:45, I was closer than either of them (I guessed two years) but WHAT THE HECK. SEVEN MONTHS. Congratulations, Sander, you have been putting in a LOT of work and it shows!!!
What's the piece, if you don't mind?
@@alkischrysanthopoulos5712 Unfortunately I don't actually know. It's really familiar to me, but I can't call the name to mind.
@@alkischrysanthopoulos5712 DeBeriot's concerto No. 9
The guy I talked to was Dan, btw
somehow, this doesn't surprise me at all😂😂
I've missed this kind of content, so happy it's back!
Thank you, practicing scales and arpeggios is the key
For an adult, that seems perfectly normal for 28 days. She's not doing anything particularly special.
Happy Birthday Brett!! May all your wishes come true, and may LingLing bless you! 😁🎉 🍰
Widmung is one of my favorite pieces! Well done, Alyssa!! And everyone!
10:07 As a flautist, I took this very personally.
This was hysterical. The amount of existential angst they felt toward the end was AWESOME!
6:49 I knew it when the second note came in, so it's absolutely hilarious to see Brett and Eddy finally realize what happened lmao
Can I know the name of the piece?
I already love the idea of the video. Im so glad you still are making original ideas for your ideas. Thank you so much
I love how when people are better then them instead of nit-picking they encourage and lift them up more.
2:30 Man used to play cello but still did that "learning cello" vid with Eddy?? Dang.
Two set needs to do this sort of video again. I love it!
I love the clock behind them never moved its hands, so that we don't know how much time they took in making this video
Eddy at 11:58 I’m just like, but you do have Ling Ling power. Your Perfect Pitch!!!
A little poem for the Birthday Maid:
Dear Brett
What an eventful year it has been
You and Eddy, Twoset for the win!
You've transformed into Maid Brett for (Eddy's) all our joy
To witness you dance, oh boy, oh boy
And early summer came
You guys brought a project to fame
Beautiful pieces: prelude, scherzo, adagio, rhapsody
All wrapped up in a beautiful, stunning movie
You made us dream of distant lands and broad hallways
You brought us back to ourselves in the end, like always
Then the debut of B2TSM
How much more epic can it get, oh man!
But this was not all you had in stock
I have to admit it was quite a shock
When you took on Blackpink
As Paganini himself, and got all the hate from their Blinks
Sell out rocked so hard
It for sure broke my spotify chart!
But the most wonderful, epic event
Was simply Ling Ling and God sent
Of course through your hard work, all the practice and dedication too
Let us witness you guys playing Mendy, Bach and Pag with the SSO
Not only that, you did it on TWO Strads!
That just proves how much the world loves you, lads
It remains till this day the most beautiful recording in my opinion
So much passion, softness, fire and emotion
After new year a new project
One in order to protect
Violin-chan from the bass gang
It all went down with a huge bang
The Twoset vs Davie504 concert
Nothing like this has ever been done, correct?
All in all, an epic year once again
And I'm sure you guys will gain
Even more followers, do more epic projects, meet more people, dream even bigger
And we'll support you all the way, while you do everything with vigour
Please though, take good care of yourselves
Look after you, take breaks and sleep enough, for your healths
And for now all is left to say
Is, happy Birthday!!!
Great poem :D!
birthday happy
Wow! This is so Good!

You two must have worked really hard recently :>
Btw happy birthday Brett ✨✨✨
They have so many video submissions to look at. I was kinda bummed out when they didn't pick my video for one of their other videos. People in the comments asked that I post it anyway and I did and got a lot of nice comments. Maybe you'd like to do the same? I'd be happy to listen and take a guess!
I also miss their videos so much and feel kinda lonely without them. But I understand that they are doing a lot of other amazing stuff recently but still. 😭
Where did two set ask for submissions?
@@LingLingWannabe-bx5ud yeah, totally agree.
@@CopShowGuy Thanks for suggesting this! I sound bad though, no talent at all lol But probably I can set it public for a week so that any who interested can take a guess? But I sound bad😂
7:36 my friend has been playing Viola for about 7 years by now and she can shift that high
I missed you guys so much. Also happy birthday brett
I like how Brett just immediately changes his decision after Eddy says his answer 😆🤣😂
Me being a viola feeling slightly offended
Others: "I learn it in 2 years or 3 years."
Ling Ling: "Hold my 40 hours per day."
6:49 it’s actually Issaquah, WA. With only 30% AAPI demographically. Go Pacific northwest!
You sure about that? I live in the area. The poor area down the hill, I mean.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRETT!! this video was super fun and shout to the wonderful people who played!!
When twoset violin thinks you are a violinist is the biggest compliment
Happy Birthday dear Brett!! 🎂🎉 Because of you both, I am now motivated to be a composer and full-on conductor! You both helped me appreciate classical music even more to the point where I can name all the classical music pieces mentioned in any music book! Happy Day to everyone!
Yay! Way to go!
@@wakingtheworld Thank you!
5:42 we all got rickrolled guys
Been so long since the last video that I am so happy to see you guys finally back!!!
(Organ performance student here)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRETT!!!!!
No matter how many years I watch you guys, the random screaming in the intro persists 😂 you guys are awesome
In my experience, all adult violin students progress to a solid beginner level very very quickly. After that, the progress slows down to a more normal rate.
Aye. That sounded a lot like me, not bad tone but super careful bow use and hesitant playing. (I'm still in the beginning so I know.)
Happy birthday Brett! I really don't know what else to comment
your videos are what inspired me to practice flute everyday for six months straight, even when the going got tough with it. i’m at a high school level, and i’m now able to play pieces up to speed with my peers. thank you!
Im learning violin from 2 years now twosetters were the one who inspired me to learn I am very grateful.
6:33 Eddy just sitting there still frozen, is CRACKING me up 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRETT YOU ARE THE BEST BOIII
Happy Birthday Brett! Wishing you the best day ever!!! 🎉🎉
Greetings from Italy! you’re amazing, super funny and super cultured! in Latin there’s a prhase “Repetita iuvant” it means practicing will make it better! KEEP PRACTICING!! ❤
Today is also my birthday, i feel like this is a gift for me HAHAHA thanks guysss! Im so happy today!💛
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRETT
HOPE YOU HAVE AN AMAZING DAY
happy birthday brett!!! welcome back😊 we missed you!
Eddy’s stereotypical comments cracked me up.
@The_TwoSetViolin seriously? How do I claim it? is it a viola? please, Noooooo
Tarantella is such a cool piece on the cello, it sound so good
Woooow. Loved the ocarina. Bummed there was no brass represent, but at least you got a couple winds in there. Ling Lings indeed!
Thank you sander representing the flute community! 10:14
All I could feel during this video was a growing sense of shame.
Best wishes for your birthday Brett!!
Yay! It's about where you're at, not comparing yourself to others far better than you. I have a friend who's praised my playing (violin) from the off. He has filmed my progress and when I look back (18 months ago) I know I wasn't really that good and a year hence, I'll come back to now and smile and he'll still be there encouraging and supporting me. TwoSet were and are my inspiration too...
