I went to a "world" festival where every booth was a different country. At the main stage they had a music demonstration from all the countries. The announcer talked a little about each instrument, the bagpipes, for instance, were so loud they could be heard over a train, so they took the microphone away. Halfway through the singular bagpiper's performance A TRAIN GOES BY. Literally right next to the tent the festival was at, seperated only by a tall chain link fence. Horn blared and everything. Now I wonder which could drown the other out - the bagpipes or the ancient Celtic carnyx (also used on actual battlefields), which is reputed to have the biggest dynamic range of any instrument. Search "carnyx" on YT for some examples. I was lucky enough to hear John Kenny play a reconstructed one live at the British Museum, with the sound bouncing off the Elgin Marbles - wonderful! Yes, bagpipes ARE really that loud. I do the dumb, boring flag routine in front of my mom's marching band, and the bagpipes are always practicing right next to our band on parade day, and they have no trouble competing with the band. Our band of about 25 members will be practicing, and then right next to us 5 bagpipes will be playing, and I can always hear both equally. It's amazing, really

They're not very common. People who start stringed instruments at a young age typically learn the basics on violin. It's easier to teach a classroom of children if they're all playing the same instrument.
I've been playing viola for over 30 years but even I started on piano and violin as a kid. My older brother is a professional symphonic cellist and Juliard grad. He started on piano and violin.
I think most people who have only played viola will be people who started music at a later age.

I could totally troll them! I'm a flute player, so I could fake sax somewhat convincingly. I taught but never played marching snare, so I could at least play the perididdle rhythm that was requested- in traditional or matched grip even. I've watched enough TwoSet that I could probably hold a viola convincingly as long as I didn't have to play it. If trombone was an option I could do that one too since I played 3rd in Jazz band in high school, even though I was barely adequate and it was many years ago.
I went to a small school with no orchestra, but wind band, marching band, jazz band, and indoor percussion were filled by anyone who had time to learn another instrument. It was great exposure to different styles, clefs, melody (flute, which is the violin of wind band), rhythm (xylophone/pit percussion for marching band), and playing in the middle of a chord (trombone). Each experience made me a better overall musician.

There are a lot of comments affirming how "loud the bagpipes are" and how they're "meant to be played outdoors"...
Yes, The Great Highland Bagpipe is a particularly loud (and high-pitched) variety of bagpipe, but in terms of decibels, it is less loud than the speakers at a movie theatre or the booming bass of a car stereo. The people who covered their ears in this video are being dramatic; the sound of a bagpipe can be shrill and shocking, but there is no need to cover your ears unless you truly hate the sound so intensely that you can't stand to hear it at full volume. (Some pipers do wear earplugs when practicing, as any loud sound at close range for prolonged periods of time can cause damage to the hearing. I've been piping for 30 years without earplugs, and my hearing is just fine, so... 🤔)
As for the GHB being traditionally a strictly "outdoor" instrument, that is simply not true. There are many "traditional" occasions where it is played indoors. Solo piping (and dancing) competitions are often held indoors, Burns Night (in January) is naturally indoors, weddings and funerals are frequently indoors, etc. There is no rule or tradition relegating the GHB to outdoors.
I was disappointed that the piper in this video, in order to verify her piperhood, chose to play "Highland Cathedral" of all tunes! (I hate that tune; it's the most un-bagpipey tune ever written! I was hoping for a nice 2/4 march or Strathspey, anything but bloody awful HIGHLAND CATHEDRAL! 🤣)
