Exploring the Impulse to Create Beauty

In this conversation with an artist, Rupert explores the desire to create something of beauty, drawing from his own experience as a potter. What is this creative impulse that drives artists and creatives, and what can they focus on to be successful in this pursuit?
Rupert says: ‘I didn’t want to be a great artist or even make great art, but I knew that beauty was real, that it wasn’t just a pleasant sensation or visual impression, and I had this urge to create something that spoke of beauty.
‘In your creative process it is important to keep alive this conviction that you have - to make something that evokes the experience of the sense of beauty. Keep following that and, without knowing it, you will be drawn there. It’s like that children’s game where you’re blindfolded and you’re getting close, and all you’re told is you are getting warmer or colder. That’s all you’re ever given as an artist. Your job is just to make sure you are always getting warmer.’

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it has been said. My "personal" experience is that when truth is "known", understood, I would say that the completion, the fruition of this understanding is the seeing of beauty in all of creation. The beholder is the I AM manifesting through each of Us. Thank you Rupert.

Strange that when I contemplated where I got my love of love, truth and beauty, I came up with a different conclusion (Rupert’s makes sense and mine doesn’t!): I’m a lifelong musician since the age of 3 and ai found first and foremost Truth through the musical path to the point that in my early 20s I said ‘everything moves in the same way’ and ‘I’ve done everything I want to do in this world (I’ve been out there is it enough objects) there must be something else’. I did also indeed find beauty through music, I mean the dissolving of subject and object (although I didn’t formulate it like that back then). I don’t think I ever had a love of love. I just don’t think I’ve ever had a concept of love. I just knew it as Oneness because of the other two paths. When people talk about love, it’s like a fake human concept to me. I just short cutted to Oneness due to my life in music. Interesting revelations.

I relate so much with that experience in regard to creating and making something beautiful. I’m not an artist, yet that’s what absorbs my attention in my daily life. I’ve dabbled in ceramics and I love it; but if the outcome is disappointing to me, I wonder if it’s worth the effort. I want to learn how to paint, but there’s that voice questioning if can be doing something better with my time, considering my age…..and yet, that’s what I would be doing all day: painting and making pottery , just for the sake of beauty. That would be heaven 😊 to me.

You have to concentrate with a hope in your heart to realize something greater than the attachment that stands in your way or tortures you. The mind can only abandon a desire for a greater desire. That's why insight is so important because then the state of not suffering becomes the greater desire overarching every other desire and destroying it.
