Absolutely stellar feature Oliver, you've really outdone yourself Sir!!! Kudos!!! Though it was awfully rude of you to conduct a retrospective in a cinema when others were trying to watch the film :D
LGR, Gggmanlives, Oliver Harper, Ashens and others channels not off the top of my head, you're everywhere Mr Bundy. It's almost as if you have awesome tastes, Mr Bundy.
Larry Bundy Jr "Hello You!" Great researched video! It kept my attention the whole way through!! I'm on "pins and needles" waiting to see what movie or video you do next!! Well done, mate! 👏🏻🎞👍🏻 🤖🤓
This is really excellent. The fact that you actually went “on location”... literally... really elevates this to true documentary quality. Your presenting to camera is also very good, and the cinema set is a lovely touch. You should be very proud. More of this, please!
This Documentary is outstanding, it has better production value then a lot of the ones that are purchased by television or Netflix and they have production crews in their 100s, I really hope someone recognises your talent and makes you the next Barry Norman, with your team supporting your production. One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen
Harper, in my mind, you truly are as iconic as Roger Ebert or Gene Siskel. Your voice as a movie critic and fan are instantly recognisable... good work mate!
Oliver is the man, but iconic? Iconic means someone or something that has received often worldwide attention, and is regarded as having contributed heavily to public discourse. Maybe after a couple more decades, Oliver will earn the title of "iconic". He is still starting his career, nevertheless has a loyal following and has produced incredible work, though. People throw out these words to increase the impact of a statement, but its overuse has ultimately diluted the sentiment.
Fantastic documentary Oliver. You REALLY upped your game on this one. It was really cool to see you personally giving us a tour through the sets used for Superman IV's production. The effort and lengths you went through in this vid absolutely floored me. This is the kind of thing I expect from a professional production. Bravo. I however saddened by the knowledge that this vid will inevitably get yanked by WB just like all your other Superman retrospectives. :/
@@OliverHarper Nice work, especially as I was still living at home in MK then and saw my old school science room being used in once scene. Why do you call Superman "Supergirl" in the intro though?
Michael Kurland I wonder if that exists? I read somewhere that the negatives were burned or something? Hopefully somewhere, that cut exists. I’d love to see it instead of the workprint cut
As a television veteran, I can honestly say that you've made a brilliant documentary worthy of broadcast. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing more - hopefully, you'll be recognised as a talent to watch and that any television exec worth their salt will give you a programme of your own.
Content like this is the reason I love UA-cam. This was highly professional and better than 95% of Blu Ray special features. The obvious depth of research, the interview, on-site footage, easy-to-follow monologues, and overall quality made this very enjoyable. No studio would authorize this much time and money creating a mini-documentary about a less-than-stellar sequel like Superman IV, but you obviously have a love for the making of this film and it showed. I look forward to seeing more of your content in the future.
Dude you're the man! Easily some of the best retrospectives and reviews on UA-cam. The production value in this is outstanding! Cheers brother! From Milwaukee, Wisconsin!
I really loved this Oliver, excellent stuff. Always cool to learn new things about the Reeve movies. A lot of effort went into this and it shows. The production is top notch, as well as your delivery, hats off to all involved. I bet you got a kick out of retracing Reeve's footsteps.
It's funny, I see people frequently mention you're the new Barry Norman in the comments, probably based on the intro to "Fix it in Post". Based on this work, I would think a better comparison would be Mark Kermode. This documentary was remeniscent of his "On the Edge of Blade Runner", which is also an excellent watch.
Awesome work mr Harper. I love the fact your showing your face and actually have taken the time to go visit these locations now days, that puts a whole new spin on the “nostalgia” of it all. Speaking of which great choice in a movie to do a documentary on. Kind of an obscure gem that everyone alive in the 90’s saw. I’m looking forward to more of your retrospectives and more of these mini documentaries. I SWEAR THIS GUYS GOIN PLACES, LIKE, subscribe, help this hard working guy out. He’s doing what he loves.
A wonderfully thoughtful, thorough retrospective. We all know Superman IV wasn't the best, and it would've been so easy to critically pick it to pieces. But you chose to present the facts in a respectful, informative way. Well done, Oliver, you should be proud. One of your best!
Oliver Harper, The Man, The Myth, The Legend! You are the first of a few movie vloggers I started following couple of years ago, and you are the best, by far! I mean, it's an understatement to call you a "movie vlogger", but you know what I mean. It's an honor and a very special treat to watch your videos. With this one, you've outdone yourself! The level of your professionalism is something to strive for, and a really big homework for everyone else, doing this type of videos. Thank you, and keep up with your amazing work!
Oliver, you are the 2017 version of Barry Norman, from the BBC 1 show, Film, I used to watch when I was a kid. Your reviews and retrospectives are top notch. Keep up the good work, pal.
I knoe Ebert and Siskel are very well know around the world, but I wish Oliver would have instead included footage from the Film series hosted by Barry Norman.
This was a great insight into filming the legendary Superman film series in the UK and very nostalgic looking at some of those scenes, thanks for posting such a fantastic video.
Applause! Very nice job. As a Superman fan myself I find production stories of Superman IV fascinating, and this was very satisfying. Your hard work is really commendable, great stuff! Also nice to hear from Peter Young about it. (had the pleasure of working on a film years ago that he was set decorator on) I hope you do something like this again.
Excited to be the first to comment....Love the video...the quality of work you do, is the best that can be found on the Internet...it's amazing how your content only keeps getting better...I can only imagine the amount of work that went into this...I hope that you can do more of these...
Wow, Oliver. You hit another landmark with this one. A new format and approach. This is worthy of any commentary on a big studio Blu Ray special features release. Keep up the good work!
Awesome video Oliver! I was not expecting to see all of the location shots at the beginning but that was a great surprise. Your passion for movies is infectious and it's especially fun when you cover ones that are clearly very important to you
I have to echo what everyone else has said Olly, fantastic work on this! Watched it this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it all. It was great to see how the locations have stood the test of time and just how creative the production was with what they had to work with budget wise. Congrats to you, Tim, Richard, Brad, Peter and everyone involved in this production....night put my feet up today and give Quest for Peace another watch today. Again, thanks for sharing and for putting so much hard work into this!!
This was so awesome!!! I was a small boy in the late 80's, and I loved this film....never knew how badly it was regarded until I became a teenager in the late 90's. Superman IV will always hold a special nostalgic place in my heart, and thank you for the deeper dive into the film!
As laughable as the Superman/Nuclear Man plot is, the Clark/Daily Planet stuff is genuinely solid. That farm scene back in Smallville (in which Ma Kent has presumably passed) is moving and delicately handled. Clark's "romantic" scenes with Lacey are hilarious and cute. Also, the tabloidization of the Daily Planet by a Rupert Murdoch-style huckster is pretty prescient.
It has a lot of great scenes that work off the cast's chemistry. I find it perfectly watchable and entertaining, but it does lack polish. Superman III was two very good but very different movies in one, and they both weighed each other down. The evil Superman plot and Clark/Lana sub-plot should have been the whole film, and Pryor could have made a decent comedy just about computers.
I have to say, I wish the deleted scenes were including in the movie as it would've been a better movie!! The news alert scene and Lacy with Lex scene especially. NOT the Metro Club scenes. I also think, on a side note, an interview with Jack O'Halloran would be interesting too. As such a fan of the 1 and 2, you would make it compelling!
The level of care and polish that went into this is a testament to the fact that you are among my favorite youtubers, if not the most favorite. You're in the top 3, at least. Cheers from Georgia!
Damn. This is an impressive documentary, Oliver. It should be on the Superman 4 Blu Ray. That would actually make the movie easier to watch. Amazing job as always!
Oliver, wow, what an absolutely beautiful Retrospective you've created. You have set the highest standard with this wonderful piece. I've always admired your work but you've blown me away with the depth, detail and love you put into this masterpiece of cinematic review. As a movie buff I offer my most sincere thanks.
This documentary is over two years old and I cannot believe I haven't come across it until now. Great video and information. I can see how hard you've worked to not only put this documentary together as well as you have but also the research that you had to have done. I watch your retrospectives all the time and I really do enjoy them. Keep up the great work
Thank you so so so much for making this, mate. You have so much passion for this, you can tell. Hope you aren't spending too much for this, it's really well made 😊 Brill job Oliver and Tim!
Oliver, as someone who shares your level of passion, and interest in the vast majority of the films you cover, especially the Reeve-era Superman films, I could comment on what a professional, informative, polished, and beautifully produced piece this is. However, what I most want to say is simply "Thank you!"
Talent is one thing but when you add passion and heart to it (which is clearly visible here) you get something really special. Superman character (and Chris Reeves' Superman) have a very special place in my heart which makes this video greater than it already is. Excellent Oliver!
This is really good, well made and interesting. Its clear you've put a lot into it and you should feel proud of what you've made and is a logical step up from your retrospectives
All right, Oliver! You did it! This is like a full-fledged documentary and could have appeared on any special feature reel. I'm glad to see you're trying new things and think you may be on to something here.
Superb work as always! One of the only channels where I watch everything that is released, and all the way through. Like this new direction as well. Keep it up.
You did a fantastic job getting your story across, your love for the material showed through. That was a fascinating interview and I felt like I learned a lot of really neat new things. Thank you very much everybody for all your hard work on this, I'm very impressed!
Incredible work my dear you tuber! As someone who’s completing a Superman IV documentary myself, I can only wish to attain this standard of work. You truly have outdone yourself with this Oliver. My father actually worked at Elstree Studios during this time.
This should be included on a Blu Ray release of Superman IV! As well-filmed and well-paced as any documentary I've seen for a film! You should be damn proud!
Excellent documentary Oliver. This is very polished work, and the first of your videos that I've seen where you have presented in person. You have a natural presence in front of the camera. I haven't seen Superman IV in years, but I'm going to watch it again soon with an open mind, with an appreciation of your research undertaken. I have to say though, the music cue you have inserted at 5:21 from the first Superman film (where Clark is alone in the world and heading north, following his calling) still gives me shivers hearing it. I grew up in the 80's watching the 1978 Superman film, and it still holds up extremely well as one of the best superhero films made to date. Christopher Reeve did a stellar job bringing the character to life through his acting.
Wow !!! Well done on Oliver on such a passion project, you must be very proud. Amazing video, a lot of time and effort has clearly gone into this, the production, colour grading, even the end titles all done to a high standard. Brilliant
Mr Harper this is nothing short of spectacular. I'd demand more, but doing so would distract me from absorbing every frame of this documentary all over again. Kudos!
Hello, Owen. I’ve been a subscriber of your channel for a few years and I love your content. It’s been a source of entertainment and information about films and television shows that I’ve grew up with and even some that are unknown. I especially love the commentaries and spotlight on Superman related media like the documentary that I’m watching now. It seems to me that you have a special place in your heart for the Superman series as a whole which I kind of have myself. I think part four is not the best of the original series but a lot of work was put into trying to make a believable world. Superman is now character that is kind of overshadowed by Batman (another character that I’ve loved) as not being relevant and just simply not cool. But disagree with that thinking. Just to cut this short, thank you and your crew for putting the time and effort into making this doc about one the less popular Superman films. To you and your continued success.👏🏿👍🏿✌🏿❤️
Easily the best thing you've ever done Oliver. You've managed to celebrate some unsung heroes and achievements and in the process lent some respectability to a widely derided film. Bravo! Also, you look good in front of the camera, for the most part poised and at ease. We definitely need to see more of you front and center in your videos. It's good for your brand!
This was outstanding! I've been watching your videos for years, and you always do a great job, but this could have been a special feature on disk. It was so informative, fun, well-edited and written. Extra kudos for getting to speak with the production designer. Great job!
Ollie, we're all very proud of how far you've come. When you first started, your content was already professionally minded and well crafted. However, it seems any estimation of your potential should be revised and doubled after every project. This is by far one of the best location retrospectives or production overviews I've ever seen that didn't have full studio support behind it. Well done, sir. As always, I find you to be criminally underrated. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we can't wait to see what you do next.
Oliver, you have another hit in your catalogue. I could not believe how many movies have been shot in UK and most important, how with a few tricks you can transform a british city into an american location. Please, keep on making more of these docs that explained people that the magic of cinema is not only in the screen.
Oliver, you do a bloody great job when it comes to delving into past films. Location finding is always amazing. I did the same thing in Australia a few years back on the location of the original Mad Max and just the genius of how all george miller did was use about 10 km of rural land to film his classic. He literally shot in one spot for one scene, then pointed the camera 180 degrees the other way and filmed another scene that popped up like an hour later in the film. It inspired me in how intelligence can save on money on a film, and 30 years on. The locations he used were almost exactly as they were in the film. For others they may think "so what?" But for us film nerds, it's like walking in the footsteps of giants when we see film locations we grew up with only on the big scree.
This is fantastic, Oliver! It's very clear how much care and effort you put into this project as I know this has been a passion project for you over the last number of years. Very thorough, informative, well shot & assembled. Hopefully, when they do the next anniversary release of the Superman Anthology (hoping we get a 4K UHD set release), WB will contact you and put this within the special features!!
Really enjoyed this (and your channel). Cant get enough of hearing about this intriguing film. Milton Keynes in full anamorphic glory, probably its finest hour.
Congratulations on finally getting this documentary made, Oliver! In particular the on-site filming is very professional and maintains a consistently engaging tone to it. This must have been a passion project for many years now, and it's excelled even the very high standards you made for yourself. :)
Absolutely stellar feature Oliver, you've really outdone yourself Sir!!! Kudos!!!
Though it was awfully rude of you to conduct a retrospective in a cinema when others were trying to watch the film :D

I absolutely agree. Just brilliant
Great doc
You could be the new Barry Norman
It has better production values than superman 4.
You took it up to 11 this time, great job. You should honestly do a long documentary on Kubrick's the Shining.

Oliver Harper if Warner Bros can find Sidney J. Furie’s final cut answer print of “Superman IV,” that would be the perfect opportunity.
Michael Kurland I wonder if that exists? I read somewhere that the negatives were burned or something? Hopefully somewhere, that cut exists. I’d love to see it instead of the workprint cut
Mark Simons according to Jim Bowers, there’s a very good chance that the print still exists.
Mark Simons plus, two of the deleted scenes were completely finished and were included in the international releases of “Superman IV.”
Well done mate. I know Superman is dear to you, and you did a great job.

gokinsmen It’s better than Superman III and Man of Shite, for sure.
I think it has some of the best relationship scenes out of the four films to be honest. Just all the worst action and comic stuff.
No way IV is better than Superman III.
The Lex Luther and his nephew and Nuclear man were the weak points in the film and the special effects.

I grew up in the 80's watching the 1978 Superman film, and it still holds up extremely well as one of the best superhero films made to date. Christopher Reeve did a stellar job bringing the character to life through his acting.
Was hoping to hear about the fortress in Superman iv
Wow !!! Well done on Oliver on such a passion project, you must be very proud. Amazing video, a lot of time and effort has clearly gone into this, the production, colour grading, even the end titles all done to a high standard. Brilliant
Thank you very much Martyn!
Thank you very much Thomas for your feedback!
Great job!
This is the next level for this channel. Great production value and a TV-quality documentary. We want more! :)
Outstanding work Oliver! You've really raised the bar with this one. Must have been a real treat visiting these locations and putting together.
Really enjoyed this Oliver. It wouldn't be out of place on a Superman IV blu ray.
Thank you very much! I had a small very talented team helping me out to bring this to life and im very proud of what they achieved.
Oh cool! Cheers for the info Mike!
Love your work dude! You really went the extra mile for this and it shows. Nicely done sir, can't wait for what's next!
Cheers Jay!
Thanks very much for your feedback Witt! :)
Really enjoyed this (and your channel). Cant get enough of hearing about this intriguing film. Milton Keynes in full anamorphic glory, probably its finest hour.
Ollie! Every time you have a superman related video, I smile. You are awesome, sir.
Absolutely fantastic work pal. I love that you're constantly improving and evolving your retrospectives. Nice production!
Cheers dude!
A pretty effortless slip into the documentary-style video format Oliver, cracking job!
Cheers dude!
Wow, this is really great work Oliver. A real upgrade from your previous outings which were already great.
Amazing Oliver....the most fantastic documentaries and commentaries.
Loved every minute of this. So glad I'm able to support this type of stuff via Patreon.
Thank you very much for your support!
Your documentaries have always been outstanding. Keep up the good work man!
This was exceptionally well done, sir. Engaging, informative - very nice!
You’ve gone above an beyond on this video Oliver. I had no idea they filmed 99.9% of Superman 4 in the UK. This video was an eye opener.
Thanks for your feedback!
Absolutely fantastic video, I am blown away by the details. Milton Keynes! Who would have guessed. Keep up the incredible work Oliver.
great job Oliver, been a fan from the early days, better than extras I've seen on DVD and Blu-Ray
Great stuff Ollie! Absolute pleasure to watch!
Thanks a lot James!
Great work Oliver, keep it up.
Very well reserched and presented as always.
Such an interesting and well researched documentary , was such a joy to watch ! Thanks Oliver
Congratulations on finally getting this documentary made, Oliver! In particular the on-site filming is very professional and maintains a consistently engaging tone to it. This must have been a passion project for many years now, and it's excelled even the very high standards you made for yourself. :)
Thanks for your feedback Oscar!
This should be official bonus material on the Superman IV disc. Fantastic job, Oliver!
Thanks a lot buddy!
Outstanding work, Oliver. I hope to see many more of your documentaries!
