Even as a kid Last Crusade was my favorite of the Indiana Jones films. As an adult, that hasn't changed, but my reaction to it has. I had a difficult relationship with my father growing up, and it wasn't until I was nearing 30 that we started to develop a better relationship. Unfortunately, he died before we could get too far. Now, when i watch the film, I break down crying every time I get to the scene on the cliff. "I thought I'd lost you, Boy". Tears. Every time.
I'm sorry for your loss. That's how I feel when I watch this movie as well. Last Crusade is my personal favorite due to the bond and chemistry between The Jones's. Seeing how much was lost between them makes me want to value and appreciate the time with my father everyday. Again I'm sorry for your loss. If you both started over again before tragedy struck and you both were happy, then the love will never leave. Hold that close to you
The Last Crusade is definitely my favorite of the original trilogy. I really love the dynamic between Harrison Ford & Sean Connery which is still the best father-son relationship on-screen. It success was proved as being the No.1 movie worldwide. It's still the best ending to the series proving there was no need for kingdom of the crystal skull.
Agreed! Back in '89, I thought the father-son relationship was bullshit. Now that my father and I are about the same ages as Indy and his dad, I find my father and I have the same kind of relationship!
I think Harrison should've done more Indy movies in the 80s and 90s. There should've been 10 of these films out already. It would've been so great. We missed out on his adventures in the 1940s.
@@tobyhart8515 Yeah, instead we got 40 days, 40 nights, regarding henry, remake of Sabrina, Air force One. Who the hell cares for those films? No one. He should've just done Indiana Jones films, that's all we want from him.
Recently did a back to back of them and they still hold up. It is impressive (tried to watch Temple of Doom, my first in the Indiana Jones movies, and I cringe every time Willie comes in).
Fun thing is, when I watched the Terminator movies recently I stopped at 2 in part because Sarah Connor says "it's over" at the end, and then I stopped Indy at this movie because of the last shot. Although it was also partially because watching these movies feels kind of exhausting.
For the life of me. I don't remember this movie in 1989. I remember batman and ghostbusters very well but not Indiana Jones and the last crusade. For some reason I keep thinking it came out during the mid 1990s like 95 96.
The best thing about the point & click adventure game was that it came with a physical Grail Diary that you actually had to refer to from time to time for clues.
Yeah, it did actually. It was a fully fleshed out object in a LOT of ways and really high production value while also acting as a sneaky form of copy protection, since you needed the clues in the diary to get past the Venice library stained glass window puzzle, which as I recall, was randomized and thus you had to refer to what was essentially a code guide in the diary (or I could have just been terrible at that puzzle, since I remember getting stuck on it a LOT since I was like, seven years old and it was hard to wrap my young mind around). Mind you, this was a 2nd form of subtle copy protection, as there was a more overt form with this sort of red gelled "look through this lens on a page of random numbers to reveal the access code" form of physical copy protection too. Honestly, back in the day, I'm pretty sure half of the cost of a Lucasfilm game was in the physical stuff, not just the game. Indy came with the grail, the secret magic lens thing, a more standard game manual, like 6 floppy disks and then all your standard Lucasfilm merchandise brochures (you could buy an Indy hat!) and LucasArts' weird kind of newsletter announcement brochure with a Sam and Max comic in it, all in a big high quality cardboard box.
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe Oh don't start with that magic lens thing - I lost the manual for my Spectrum version so I couldn't get past the level when I needed to decipher the knights crest.

Its the one i remember the most from my childhood, and i might be the only one here, but i personally always loved the “blue screen” fx in “The Last Crusade”. Even as a kid i noticed them, but they never bothered me, in fact it was the complete opposite for me, i always thought they were part of the charm of the movie. Im a huge fan of Indiana Jones, i loved all the movies and i always will, they are in the same category as the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy, they are simply magical to me! Why wasn't I able to watch this as soon as it appeared on Patreon? "No ticket!!" But in all seriousness, this film is a gem and one of Spielberg's very best.
Here in Poland they played all three Indiana Jones movies on TV over the Easter weekend in 2002. I was eight. The weather was just starting to get warm. I had my whole life ahead of me. Good times.
Great job once again, dude! I love hearing about your passion for the art of cinema every time I watch one of your videos. Even though Raiders is my personal favorite in the series, Last Crusade really comes close. Also, I was wondering if you were planning to review some more animated films in the future, particularly Roger Rabbit since the film is turning 30 years old this June.
Haha, thank you for this comment. So true if seems that anytime they worked together, whenever Spielberg’s view wasn’t taken, things went astray. In Crystal Skull it seems Lucas got more of wishes followed.
The lesson here is don't let Lucas have any input in the story. He's an untalented hack and the success of Star Wars was down to his wife and other people's ideas.
@@ethanbrock5453 Lucas is fine with people to reign him in. That's why you seen a huge drop in quality between Empire and Jedi. Lucas needed Kasdan and his ex to keep his dumb shit in line.
I love this movie. My favorite parts are the "I thought I lost you boy." scene and especially The Let It Go scene. The Let It Go part is a very beautiful moment, the acting from Connery and Ford really bring a Father and Son moment like it was real in some way. Williams music on that part even tugs the heartstrings as well.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite out of the trilogy (we don't speak of the 4th one) but Last Crusade might be the most heartfelt and entertaining to watch
I liked the 4th one. The story of aliens in early human history always intrigues me and I'm glad they did an Indy film about it. I just didn't care for the cgi in the jungle. Mutt William's swinging on the vines like Tarzan was a bit too much.
I JUST watched this movie the other night! Coincidence? I THINK NOT. But seriously this is my favorite Indiana Jones film, watched it on repeat as a child
Last Crusade holds a special place in my heart because I got to see it in theaters with my father before even learning what the plot was about. A new cinema had just opened and my dad got tickets to a special premiere showing. That cinema has long since closed down but that bonding memory has never left.
21:16 I remember the point and click adventure game very well! So many well done visual gags and alternate paths. It was the first time I ever bought a guide book, though, because I often got stuck! When I finally got to the end of the game and found the grail, but managed to NOT get the cave destroyed, the Knight bid us farewell. Then he turned around again and said something like "And thanks for not wrecking the place, you should have seen what the LAST guys did!" ☠
I don't care if it does follow the same beats of Raiders. Last Crusade does them better. It's the best movie of its kind. It's thrilling. It's emotional. And . . . fuck it, I'll say it, it's goddamn spiritual is what it is!
Oliver, FANTASTIC video. Possibly one of your greatest to date. Your breakdown on why you subjectively prefer Crusade to the Objectively better Raiders completely captures how I feel, and as I've seen expressed by countless opinions on the internet, a lot of other people feel. Thank you for taking the take to make this and all your other videos. You're the man.
this is the first retrospective review i have watched and it is excellent as are all your videos. i always loved the demonstration of faith as Indy walks the invisible bridge
Another terrific retrospective of one of my all time favourite movies. Brought back memories of seeing this for the first as a teenager back in the summer of 89. Great work as always Oliver. Keep it up mate.
Thank you so much for these wonderful retrospectives, Oliver! Just the right mix of nostalgia and well-researched information. Simply the best on UA-cam!
have you guys ever hear or seen indiana jones the adaptation ? its a shot-for-shot remake of the original made in 1989 by fans it took seven years to make.
Yes, heard of it & seen parts of it as it was featured on local news in my area some time ago. I admire their dedication, but the project looked terrible. They could probably have made a decent film if they'd put as much effort into making something original.
I remember when "Innerspace" came out (produced by Spielberg) on VHS, it was in widescreen and opened with a note from Spielberg himself, praising the decision. It was my first real education in widescreen vs pan-and-scan as a kid and I became a crusader for "letterboxed" movies from that day forward.
Stunning Ollie; the thoroughness of your retrospectives is always wonderful. I can't stress how much I love Indiana Jones, I definitely remembering renting the VHS from a corner shop near my cousin's home in Baldock, along with many other 80s and 90s gems. Raiders and Last Crusade are in my top 20 favourite films ever; for me, ToD and KotCS never happened haha! I love the spinetingling feeling I still get whenever I hear the Ark theme, John's music...
Another fantastic retrospective! I need to sit down and watch these films again. I have fond memories of this one in particular because I saw it in the theater as a kid. Visual effects aside, it seems like it has held up very well.
For me this is the best Indiana Jones movie by far, such a shame they made the Crystal skull as they should have finished on a high with this great movie..excellent video Oliver.
This movie will always hold THE number one, all-time favorite movie spot for me. I've mentioned before about having had an adoptive father. My birth father died when I was young, and I didn't have a dad until I was five. We bonded over a few things at first like a love of aircraft and other complex vehicles, but there was always a distance between us. For as long as I can remember, I've loved the Star Wars movies, and I distinctly remember listening to the Raiders theme for the first time in the fourth grade, being very confused that it didn't sound like the Tusken Raiders theme (aka the Judland Wastes track) from Star Wars. I don't recall when I saw the first Indy movie, but I do recall falling in love with this movie the first time I saw it. I think psychologically I saw the distance between Indy and his dad and could easily project myself onto his character, and it was immensely gratifying to see them reconcile at the end. I think that led to me really taking an interest in archaeology, history, and language, as I'm sure it did for many young people that watched this. Ultimately, it was equally gratifying to reconcile with my dad many years later, sharing an interest in the past, though I must say, we thankfully have never been shot at by Nazis.
I've grown to love all 4 movies for what they bring to the table. Skull because it was my first one in theaters and the original 3 was because my dad wanted us to watch the movies before we saw Crystal Skull.
Your retrospectives are just like the majority of the films you make them about, they get even better with age. This was well worth the wait. It's always so cool to see how they did the old special effects, ta for that. I had no idea that "she talks in her sleep" was improvised, that makes that bit even better. Aww, Oliver was 6 years old when it came out haha, it was about two weeks after it released and then I came out of the womb =P I was about 6 or 7 when I first saw these films, I love 'em so much, the whole trilogy is awesome but I don't think I would pick a favourite out or Raiders Of The Lost Ark and this one. Both have so much magic, the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is awesome and the music, just timeless. And the bit on the beach with Sean Connery and the seagulls "chick chick chick chick!" hahaaaa. The game looks like the usual absolute stinker that's made from well known films.
My favorite Indiana Jones movie. Undoubtedly, the relationship between Harrison Ford's Indiana and Sean Connery's Henry Jones is the heart of the movie. And everything about the movie from the action, the dialogue, the humor is just great.
The problem is while originally movies and tv was nearly equal squareness, movies started going wider and wider while tv wasn't following suit for generations. Now tv is finally playing along.
No problem! It's interesting what could happen when videos get compiled at various stages. Especially after YT gets its hands on them. ;) Take care! :) BTW, now you know that I watch your videos at a pretty high volume. They are _that_ epic! :)

B.L Thackrey That's a good one. I'd love to hear the details behind that film.
Oliver was 6 years old, I was 16 years old - saw it in cinema in Macclesfield with my younger brother.
Loved the scene from the gondola on the airship. Watching the shadows change as it turned course. The suspense. The "No ticket!" line!
Every time Lucas and Spielberg disagreed, Spielberg was right and Lucas was wrong. Every single time.
Haha, thank you for this comment. So true if seems that anytime they worked together, whenever Spielberg’s view wasn’t taken, things went astray. In Crystal Skull it seems Lucas got more of wishes followed.
Yeah that's cuz Lucas is really a talentless hack
yeah Lucas is good with fantasy stuff more than anything. Spielberg can do both though fantasy and more grounded stuff.
"We don't speak of the 4th one"? But there wasn't a 4th one.
I liked the 4th one. The story of aliens in early human history always intrigues me and I'm glad they did an Indy film about it. I just didn't care for the cgi in the jungle. Mutt William's swinging on the vines like Tarzan was a bit too much.
IT WAS SEEMS THAT THE FIRST OUT OF ANY SERIES IS ALWAYS THE BEST!
Soon there will be a fifth one...
Real fans aren't afraid to talk about the 4th
I JUST watched this movie the other night! Coincidence? I THINK NOT. But seriously this is my favorite Indiana Jones film, watched it on repeat as a child
+Mitchell Schulte
I too love The Incredibles...
One of my favorite movies ever! My buddy and I still quote this movie all the time even 30 years later.
May Sean Connery rest in peace. He really made me love this movie even more
Last Crusade holds a special place in my heart because I got to see it in theaters with my father before even learning what the plot was about. A new cinema had just opened and my dad got tickets to a special premiere showing. That cinema has long since closed down but that bonding memory has never left.
RIP Sean Connery. Thank you so very much for all the characters and tales you were a part of that shaped our World rest easy Mr. Jones.
Then he turned around again and said something like "And thanks for not wrecking the place, you should have seen what the LAST guys did!" ☠
I think you outdid yourself with this retrospective. Easily the best of the two dozen I've seen so far.
Just found your videos through some sort of trending algorithm and I'm glad I did. These retrospective reviews are fantastic!
Oooooh Alison Doody....
@@Judicial78 Who wouldn't 😉
Was almost cast as Eowyn in LOTR but was unavailable as she'd just had a baby when they were about to begin shooting.
Amazing review as always Oliver, including that taffin clip gets you extra points, absolute gold.
I don't care if it does follow the same beats of Raiders. Last Crusade does them better. It's the best movie of its kind. It's thrilling. It's emotional. And . . . fuck it, I'll say it, it's goddamn spiritual is what it is!
Amen!
Same here I love the flims.
Most fun I've had watching anything on UA-cam in a long time.
Another GREAT review! Wonderfully edited, greatly written. And I share with you the same view, this is, by far, the best one in the saga!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is such a fun movie to revisit. Always enjoy your retrospectives.
this is the first retrospective review i have watched and it is excellent as are all your videos. i always loved the demonstration of faith as Indy walks the invisible bridge
Another quality entry. Should tackle "Young Sherlock Holmes" at some point...
Another terrific retrospective of one of my all time favourite movies. Brought back memories of seeing this for the first as a teenager back in the summer of 89. Great work as always Oliver. Keep it up mate.
The first film soundtrack I absolutely loved as a kid.
Thank you so much for these wonderful retrospectives, Oliver! Just the right mix of nostalgia and well-researched information. Simply the best on UA-cam!
Watched this earlier because I supported mah boi Oliver on Patreon!
Potatro tatro I know right?
Oliver long-time-no-see retrospective !!! Glad you're back, I always look forward to these :-)
THANK YOU for including that classic TAFFIN scene. Haha!
Your reviews are exceptionally good and deserve so much more attention.
have you guys ever hear or seen indiana jones the adaptation ? its a shot-for-shot remake of the original made in 1989 by fans it took seven years to make.
Yes, heard of it & seen parts of it as it was featured on local news in my area some time ago. I admire their dedication, but the project looked terrible. They could probably have made a decent film if they'd put as much effort into making something original.
I love the opening to this video so nicely put together. This is a really great review with plenty of insight also that art work is really great
Enjoyed every second of this. Well done, Oliver!
I like to think this is the greatest Father's Day movie ever. My dad and I watch it a lot together!
Robbie Buzogany what an idea
Man I've watched this retrospective 5 times now. Excellent work 👍
OMG this is a great watch for the Duncan Casey popular quotes alone! XD
Rest in Peace River Phoenix, Sean Connery and Robert Edison.
Another fantastic retrospective! I need to sit down and watch these films again. I have fond memories of this one in particular because I saw it in the theater as a kid. Visual effects aside, it seems like it has held up very well.
Yes!! I've been waiting for you to do one on this movie!!
Thanks for uploading this video Oliver I’ve watched Indy 3 a lot of times and love it
only watching my DVD of this last night and was wondering if u would do a commentary or something on it lol magical film From my childhood
Dang Oliver, that was incredible, thank you so much for doing these r/r’s!
Great review and I totally agree that this is the best in the series and the character development /interaction was awesome. Love this movie.
Great analysis. Some amazing behind-the-scenes footage here - I thought I'd already seen everything there was.
For me this is the best Indiana Jones movie by far, such a shame they made the Crystal skull as they should have finished on a high with this great movie..excellent video Oliver.
I agree. And we still have part 5 on the way.
@@anubusx yes looking forward to part 5 😀👍

It will probably suck.
Bloody well done Oliver... bravo!
'Raiders' is the favorite 'Indie' film for most people, but this my favorite! Another great video, Oliver!
I've grown to love all 4 movies for what they bring to the table. Skull because it was my first one in theaters and the original 3 was because my dad wanted us to watch the movies before we saw Crystal Skull.
possibly my favourite film of all time, certainly one of my most watched. thanks Oliver love your channel
Any chance on doing John Boorman films seeing how Excalibur was featured so prominently in Ready Player One?
Got to say this is probably one of your best reviews Oliver 👍 edited beautifully and your production images are stunning 👌👍
I can't believe that Crystal Skull is already 10 years old 🌊
It's sixteen years old now
Your retrospectives are just like the majority of the films you make them about, they get even better with age. This was well worth the wait. It's always so cool to see how they did the old special effects, ta for that.
I had no idea that "she talks in her sleep" was improvised, that makes that bit even better. Aww, Oliver was 6 years old when it came out haha, it was about two weeks after it released and then I came out of the womb =P
I was about 6 or 7 when I first saw these films, I love 'em so much, the whole trilogy is awesome but I don't think I would pick a favourite out or Raiders Of The Lost Ark and this one.
Ear-violation warning at 21:55
Sorry about that, thanks for pointing it out. It doesn't do that on the exported file. It seems to be an encoding error on UA-cam's behalf.
My favorite Indiana Jones movie. Undoubtedly, the relationship between Harrison Ford's Indiana and Sean Connery's Henry Jones is the heart of the movie. And everything about the movie from the action, the dialogue, the humor is just great.
I'm so glad that EVERYTHING is 16:9 these days. 4:3 is just a garbage format.
The problem is while originally movies and tv was nearly equal squareness, movies started going wider and wider while tv wasn't following suit for generations. Now tv is finally playing along.
Wide-screen analogue TVs were just coming onto the market.
Is it sad that some movies just don’t look right to me without the cuts and pans with the 4:3 ratio? Might be dating myself here lol
(21:54) The brief burst of static scared the living crap out of me! :P But, as always a great retrospective, Oliver! :)
Sorry about that, thanks for pointing it out. It doesn't do that on the exported file. It seems to be an encoding error on UA-cam's behalf.
No problem! It's interesting what could happen when videos get compiled at various stages. Especially after YT gets its hands on them. ;) Take care! :)
BTW, now you know that I watch your videos at a pretty high volume. They are _that_ epic! :)
If you thought River Phoenix got the "Young Indy"vibe in this, chex his last film Dark Blood!Harrison Ford loved the cat &said so when he passed on......
I've always wondered about the use of catacombs in Venice. As far as I know, there aren't any - as Venice sits on wooden pilings in a lagoon.
As always, a masterful capolavoro. I was very hyped for this one when I saw the first notification, you disappoint and loved every minute of this. Deffo going to watch the film later. Keep up the good work sir!
Thank you for making my day that much better.
Best regards,
TGV
P.s. What I would do for a castle like that!!! My dream villains liar, that and the underwater one from "The spy who loved me" ;-)
