Bad Gear - Digitakt II
Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world’s most-hated audio tools. There are these unfounded rumors that this show is not actually about Bad Gear, that I just pick random stuff I want to make music with and let clueless online trolls do their magic.
This is - of course - a steaming pile of horse dung and I just recently failed to find enough hate on, for example, the Access Virus B, Novation Drumstation and Dreadbox Typhon.
However, today we are going to talk about Digitakt II and as this particular unit was sent over by Elektron as a long term loan even they must be aware of the fact that late 80s polyphony, partial physics workflow and a lack of essential hipster features make for some juicy online controversy.
Bad Gear - I might be BIASED
This Digitakt II was sent over by Elektron as a long term loan.

Great suggestion, thank you!!!
I got to be honest with you, I don't really care much about gear, but your charisma, scriptwriting, editing and jams are the reason I keep looking forward to every video you upload, great stuff!
Thank you so much!!!
“ i believe that the MK1 sound more warm tho, because of the vintage converters “ 🙃
😂
Just imagine how sterile quantum-computing converters are going to sound … 😖 I use only unpolished rocks as AD/DA converters, for that vintage prehistoric sound.💡
I just realised that this is the only channel I watch with my hands on the keyboard, so I can rewind and pause on meme frames. You, sir, have created a new content format: "watch like you were also editing media". Well played! 😂

It's all cunning ploy to double his viewing figures - we all watch it through, then again to pause at the memes.

Yeah, the memes are pure art…
I'm a simple man. I see a 10 minute video from Florian, I reserve 30 minutes of my day to watch it!
That might actually be the best, unbiased review I've seen for the DT2. Absolutely fantastic video.
Thank you so much!!!
Elektron: sends their new product to be advertised on a channel called Bad Gear.
Welcome to the future;)
If your products don't make it to "Bad Gear" then they are really bad ! 😛 Digitak II is Bad Ass !

I don’t know what’s more impressive, we have a Bad Gear on the Digitakt II or there is already a firmware update.

Finally got a Digitakt towards the end of last year....and, of course. The Digitakt II has to come out..
I feel you!!!
i think you may have dodged a bullet, unless they do some more firmware upgrades! people still love the DT1
An original plus the new one will be a great setup.
8 drum tracks and 8 midi on the mk1.
16 tracks on the mk2 to do what ever you want with.
Sample tracks,midi........
I am certaiinly keeping my OG and am buying a mk2
Same situation bro, feels very 💩 for real, the only hope is a software update, otherwise it will be a 💩 situation
I wonder if there is anyone in the world who would want to buy mono dt1 if the dt2 is 100 dollars more than recent silver anniversary update and has so much features😢😢😢
Like fr, Digitakt is good, but i am pissed off that they dropped stereo version less then in a year after dropping their anniversary digitakt
Looks like Elektron chose to became an Apple in musical world for real, very sad😢
Hint 1: Awhile back AudioPilz mentioned he was selling his Digitak I. Hint 2: Elekrton announced they had stopped production. Hint 3: They were on sale here in the US. I mentioned in that post, I'll hold onto my TR-8S till the new Digitak comes out. But it's cool you bought the old one. They are being dumped for like $500 now ? Awesome !

It would be interesting which motivation Elektron had to release a special edition of Version 1 only weeks before the released the update. I bet there are some customers annoyed about that move.
I think the motivation is rather clear cut
For the first time on your channel, I just saw a recycled meme from another video of yours. Which is a massive accomplishment considering you have never run out of memes.

Thank you so much but it happens more often than you might think;)
Wow, which was it? I've been watching since Florian was trolling weird facebook synth groups for views about ep 2 or 3 lol

No sample chopping in 2024 on a 1,000USD sampler is nasty work.
It’s there, just a bit basic
@@AudioPilz it's the same grid slicing that's available on my OG DT. No excuse, manual chopping has been on samplers since the 80s. It's ridiculous for $1,000 sampler not to have it in 2024. You can have that feature in any other box at any other price point. I'll stick with my OG DT and Octatrack MK2. 🙃
I’d say the lack of polyphony is even more insulting in this day and age. . A $10 ARM A9 SOC from 2007 can handle massive polyphony + high track counts, as seen in the Synthstrom Deluge. Digitakt 2 is sticking with the same underpowered 200mhz SOC from Digitakt 1, plus a Sharc DSP chip for audio, which lacks the power of comparatively priced general purpose ARM chips.
Digitakt 1 and 2 are such wonderful, brilliantly designed machines otherwise, but I don’t get why Elektron would tie their arms behind their back with obsolete technology. It could be so much more with a little extra oomph under the hood.
@@AdamsOlympia I was unaware that this new machine doesn't have an updated processor! Holy cow, that's awful. Agree about polyphony, too. They released the same chipset from DT1 in 2024 and charged 1,000 for it?!?!! Nasty work
the second jam was a biohazard for my ears. more please.
Thank you!!!
You put soo much effort in those Clips I'm amazed.❤

Damn, that price hike just slapped my eyes out of my skull though! Your tracks were so yummy with this one :D

Thank you so much for that one!!! Nice!!!
I thought I'd be waiting much longer for this video. You're good.
Thank you!!!
Once again very well done. Thank you, your videos are really funny and still very interesting. Quite unique!
Thank you so much!!!
Whenever I consider one of these boxes I go and watch a video and realise I have absolutely no desire to try and learn this. If I had a wall of synths it might be useful as a sequencer but given the limitations of polyphony I'd go elsewhere, like a computer? Love that it's straight to BG - HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!! And ty Mr Pilz
Have a great weekend!!!
I completely agree with the hater saying "no internal battery, zzzzzz" like the point of "handbox form factor" music making hardware is to take it wherever without having to juggle multiple expensive electrical gadgets wired to each other. People always say "well, rip cords!!" but you don't see them juggling an external battery pack with their Gameboys, PSPs, Nintendo Switches, Steam Decks etc do you? That's because no one wants a handheld-sized device that isn't actually handheld, unless, for some extremely strange reason, it's a groovebox with G.A.S. gravity behind it that makes people want one despite its flaws because of social proof and validation or something
👍👍👍
Another great episode. Nice idea for the finale!
Thank you so much!!!
I think the upgrades are okay, but to me Digitakt was never meant to replace a DAW. I see it as a drum machine- its more than powerful enough to do that.
I love the Digi to start off the track, build the rhythm part, the just overdub in the DAW (overbridge is addmitting its ending up in the DAW anyway).
On the one occasion I really needed a stereo sample, I split the file in two, left and right (on my computer), then trigger the two samples panned hard left and right at the same time= stereo.
Agreed!!!
Alright there is no turning back now. Access Virus video!!! :)

0:33 Steaming pile of horse dung are in fact preferred by farmers since it contain more nutrients then the 4 times rumination cow does a complex process

My Digitakt is the reason why I finally switched to a DAW. It's great for people who like loops and the Elektron workflow, but that's not me.
Definitely an acquired taste;)
@@StatetrooperBillyBill Yeah, I wouldn't want to use a mouse and keyboard for music. So I'm using a hardware DAW instead, a Force.
I love Abelton. Using a mouse & keyboard isn't too complicated.... for most people. Plus there are a ton of midi controller's/keyboard. If you got ton's of $$$ to spend on hardware cool. I like both option's. 🤪

You can save yourself a lot of money and get the same feel by mapping your DAW functions to one of those clicky-clacky mechanical computer keyboards.

I’m a MK1 junkie, and honestly I actually don’t feel the need to change to the MK2. Over the years I’ve acquired enough stuff that addresses the biggest upgrades of the new unit (e.g, using my mk1 with an Octatrack and OXi One). It a great device for anyone in the market for a Digitakt, and the MK1 did need upgrading, but I can’t justify throwing away a grand just to have the ‘new’ one when the ‘old’ one is still doing me so well 🤷♂️
I feel you!!!
Yep..... people are going to like your music no matter what you use as long as it's good music :) . Save that money and put it towards a Moog One .... lol

What do you call a SimplTrek that can't be battery powered, is bigger, heavier, has less storage, and costs twice as much made by Elektron?
Digitakt II obviously.
Oh? the DTII has overbridge? That's nice. I can control most of the SimplTrek using MIDI and still add external IO audio with USB compliant audio...
Now how often do Elektron owners USE overbridge?

If Akai put parameter lock automation in the modern MPCs, there would be no more need for the Digitaks.
There's some truth to that
@@AudioPilz My comment was mean and I apologize. These are charming boxes but it's hard to justify the price tag when compared to the perpetually underrated modern MPCs. I also wish the MPCs had the parameter locks because its a really fun and powerful feature.
Yeah, that's a software thing. Elektron sequencers seem to be based on sequences with note events that define everything else (from what sound source to use to what effects and parameters for everything).
Most stuff defines all of that info on the track, and the sequence just contains basic midi note events and automation on every track. Although, if the sequencer is properly abstracted to implement midi with program change, you get "parameter lock". It's more like freezing automation to a sequence step instead of letting it vary with every clock tick.
Novation also pulled it off with the og Circuit, I'm pretty sure you can do the same thing on some old Yamaha boxes, but Elektron made it popular as a workflow because they let you change almost everything in the box for every step.
We should be asking grooveboxes/samplers to work like this, by now. Akai software has always, always sucked.
and yet akai's mpc one+ isn't even really an upgrade, so its sort of moot. maybe if they had made an actual effort on the one+ it would matter.
