Setting aside for a moment Frank Gambale's legendary contributions to picking technique in the form of sweeping, which we will discuss at greater length soon, can we talk about his incredible tone control? I don't know about you, but I can always tell when Frank is playing, sometimes just from the pick attack and articulation alone. Especially on the low strings, those pick harmonics are so juicy and distinctive. Complete tablature for Frank's two epic intro solos, and 100+ technical examples in the Frank Gambale interview:
troygrady.com/...
A man who can shred and keep it all melodic too. It’s a rare skill as many very fast players bore me inside a few seconds. Bravo.
His sound makes me miss Shawn Lane.
“To do it while sweeping is kinda hard..” proceeds to flawlessly execute said technique!
I know. I never even thought of doing a harmonic with an up stroke. And he’s been doing so long while sweeping. He really is the master.
Forget about the sweeps for a moment, and listen to what he's playing in this vid.
It's absolutely elevating
Lancelot On Crack it’s also important that you listen to the notes he’s not playing. 🤯
Absolutely! He has technique for days. But I think that even in the slower passages, the playing is absolutely tasteful, and even when he is sweeping it is leading somewhere and it's not gratuitous. As a young guy, i was absolutely into vai, satriani, malmsteen etc but the idea of jazz or fusion was like 'pretentious' music to me. I took lessons for about 3 months at 13 and although I learned a good bit of theory, finger positioning etc. I quit because I was learning nuage but wanted to learn attitude by sepultura etc.
I'd heard of all the jazz greats, and some fusion guys like dimeola, holdsworth and mr gambale here, but stuck to my metal and shredders.
Holy fuck, as a somewhat older guy I know now I missed out a lot by not pursuing these kinda guys earlier. Frank's playing here touches me in a way that the best metal solo never could. I'm glad my horizons broadened eventually!
it's extremely bland
Totally agree, you can hear how much Frank is connected to his playing, sounds completely amazing and natural.
Correct - l am envious of his technique, but more so of his note choice and knowledge.
"It's kind hard" -Then he destroys it
Destroyed = perfectly executed in this case.
@Bill Miles You sound like my mom lol
"Sweep harmonics" sounded like random guitar words strung together till I watched this video. Mind blown.
He's a true master. His playing incredible.
his right hand techinque is remarkable
He elevated the sweeping game to a different level
Avisek Ganguly, nah uh Cacophoney, G.Howe, T.McAlpine, all the Schrapnel/Blues Review Mob
Avisek Ganguly, But his pic technique is next level 4 sure.
B.T.B's I have heard all those players band none of them expanded this technique from neoclassical niche to the blues, fusion, jazz and beyond
Avisek Ganguly I disagree, I think many are & did tred those roads as well. But thats ok, theyre ALL amazing their own way.
Avisek Ganguly, off the top of my head is Richie Kotzen, He's a great example, but ill agree 2 disagree agreeably. 😁
I love being proven wrong, watching shredders I used to diss when I was younger, and realizing they're really musical and nice people
Has he really ever been considered to be a shredder? He's like Michael Brecker - sonic fast but solos are packed with sophisticated and beautiful ideas
I’ve met him several times... One of the nicest musicians out there... He even let me play his Cort acoustic(behind him).. You can tell from his instructional videos that he’s really cool...
i don't find many to be musical tbh but i have gone from hating Satch to liking some of his stuff, check out Grace Potter, Cortex the Killer featuring Joe Satrianni, that's the only time i heard him play for the song, other musicains playing on it are of the scale too, literally searched the internet for ages, for 12 years, that is in top one percent of outstanding videos i have found, literally moves me to tears.
Like the french
Nick Sm, of course he's a shredder. Remember Varney's Truth in Shredding release? Sheesh..
Gambale.... my godz.... he, imo, is the master of economy and sweep picking. Amazing when he does those fast runs. So controlled-sounding and melodic. He has a little of that hollow sound like Holdsworth. Maybe it's the semi-hollow body contributing to that?
Hey Truth! Good to see you here
That's the truth, Truth! Spot on with "melodic" and "economy"... truly an efficiency expert and interesting to listen to.
And yet he can alternate pick with the likes of Steve Morse.
His playing is so fucking smooth, it's like gliding on ice, so effortless.
OMG! You got Frank! One of the greatest masters of guitar... Congrats Troy, keep cracking the code...
Love Frank, he is truly a master.
this is also what i wished for
Frank, to me , all his awesome technique aside, is the most beautifully melodic fusion player of all!! The Best!!!!
That damn tone is buttery deliciousness
i found it slighly nauseous. some stereo effect at work there i suspect.
When he's playing the song there's a slight modulation/pitch shift going on - when he's talking with Troy it's off. I like it for some things. I found his tone in this video nice and I think it's some the nicest playing I've heard him do.
Terrible tone. Every tube amp within 6 blocks of that room committed suicide while listening to it. (I'm not commenting on his playing, just that terrible over processed sound.)
Roland Snyder Pure late 80s cheese I love it. Perfect for those “even rock stars can get sad too” ballads.
Oh yes, fantastic tone. I've never seen a god, but listen to this and you'll know how a god sounds.
This is just beyond the possibility of words of appreciation. It's just outright mastery to a level that you don't even want to achieve it, because it's like, they have it, they do it so well and there's no need for me to come behind and try to top it, he's already done it, just let him have it.
Up-stroke artificial harmonic. 👍
Never thought about it, pretty awesome.
How to do? Damn
Step 1, make sure the thumb sticks out past the pick. Step 2, rotate the arm slightly so the thumb contacts the string. Step 3... profit!
Frank Gambale
i think he meant how to apply it to an up pick, basically same principle but with index finger, i can get em sometimes but it's hard. oh, sorry there i go jumping in before watching the entire video lol, omg, he is mind lowing isn't he! i am not usually a shred guy at all but he is original and creative.
frank is a fusion master...a very high degree of harmony coupled with unrivaled technique...this guy is over the top..
Frank has the rare combination of superb technique and amazing melodic feel. I don't even care about the picking in this video. I'm just mesmerized by his melody.
Pls get Paul Gilbert in for alternate picking next ❤
he needs to be interviewed just because
Interesting Things that 2. I'm not even sure if he could pull off his furious picking anymore, seems like he lost all interest in it but if he warms up with this stuff I bet he could still be a great example of perfect technique.
I saw him live last year and he could, although it didnt sound like Racer X original tone, it doesn depend on tone how we perceive it too
Interesting Things I saw him live at the beginning of this year but the most recent live footages and stuff don't have any trace of his picking. Well I'm not gonna go into that any deeper so let's just hope troy gets him to do this. Have a nice day :)
I saw him at the Pat Torpey memorial show in LA in May. Although what Paul is writing is more blues and jazz derived now, he crushed his alternate picking game. And for anyone that participates in his online classes...there's no loss of steam or ability. He's just added some more tricks to his bag from other genres. But, he may not have as much interest in doing a "this is how I shred" video simply because he's been there done that. But I'd venture to guess he would because it's fun.
I think Frank is the embodiment of "It's not only about speed...but the musicality of note selection".
Totally!
I didn't know Mike Ehrmantraut could play guitar!
Really though, absolutely beautiful stuff. This man is a master.
Millennials still using observation as a form of ridicule. Sort of like how a 5 year old does.
sure blue notes surpass blue meth
He only plays at full measures though.
Kooper Mike was one of the best characters in the show but go off
He's doing it for his granddaughter.
One of my favourite players. One of Australia's best exports. I love his fretboard freedom and his melodic freedom.
FG has been blowing my mind for a long time. He is truly a complete guitarist and my personal favorite fusion master.
A total BEAST!! Hitting all the right notes in amazing fashion!!👍🙂
That top,on his Kiesel guitar, damn, not to mention his tone.
greekfreak1980 I think this video is going to sell a few Kiesels!
Kiesel? I thought this was a signature Carvin.
@@YaoEspirito oh yeah!
It's the same company.Long story short:the company was founded as ''Kiesel Guitars'' in 1946,by Lowel Kiesel, but after a legal battle with some dealers,he couldn't use the name anymore and re-branded it to ''Carvin'' in the 50's.In 2014,the Kiesel family, finally got the legal rights to ''Kiesel Guitars'' back and in 2015 the the 2 divisions split up.The guitars department became ''Kiesel Guitars'',runned by the son/grandson of the founder and the amps/audio department became ''Carvin Audio''.
They are beautiful instruments.
Sweep picking is something I've been waiting for Troy and the CtC crew to cover and getting Frank Gambale for it is the best late birthday present ever.
On that note, how about a "Chop Builder" style video or seminar, Troy? Frank's "Chop Builder" was pretty cool -- it was a structured practice session that really, well, built the chops.
Just be sure to get some background dancers for it too.
TheGuitar Person those girls dancing with the guitars cracks me up every time :D great exercices also. Very hard to keep playing them without building tension
It's brutally humbling to listen to this man play, fantastic stuff!
I see alot great guitar player lists all over you tube but Frank is often forgotten. He's incredible, easily one of the best in the world.
Master Gambale.. What is the name of the music in the intro? Thanks for posting man. Helpful video.
1:15 onwards reminds me of Shawn Lane, which is pretty much the highest guitar-related compliment I can offer.
Yes, this is the right reference. He is not Shawn Lane, but he does have stuff on comparable level to offer us. Happy us :)
He is way before shawn lane my friend give credit where it's due
@@roadwarrior4080 Gambale is 4 years and 4 months older than Lane. Wikipedia states: Frank Gambale. Active 1984-present. Shawn Lane. Active 1977-2004. That actually makes Lane Gambale's senior by 7 years...
Anytime I hear his playing I remember Shawn ..
Shawn ...they sound so alike mostly their choice of notes and the sweeps sounds like Shawn's pentatonic fives and so on ..
He’s one of the best there is His work with Chick and the Electric Band is some of my favorite
One of the best to ever do it... I stopped caring about metal players when i discovered him , a long time ago... He is not only a shredder.. The phrading , the notes, the feeling and expresion... Guthrie, greg howe , kotzen , to name a few are on this leage... Truly gifted.
Nice that you mention kotzen,
Another absolute beaat !!
The phrasing, the definition, the articulation the harmonic knowledge, the taste!...Fantastic!!!
Drink Gambale soda...! You discribed him like some coca cola ad.
Troy shows the mechanics of many great players, but Gambale can actually THINK that fast, as most others can't.
I'd say its a bit of an over-analysis. People should do what is comfortable for them. After all, they all will say it is the manifestation of hard work and hours to hone the technique, no matter your method of execution to get the notes out.
This is true. The guy is a genius!
Frank is smooth as hell.
Yes he is
Yeah, his tone and his playing are both smooth as silk.
He's undeniably a master of the instrument.
F. Gambale, A great master of the guitar. He sounds better, inspire, and more amazing than before! His technique is out of this world 👍
Frank Gambale has and does everything I want with a guitar... gonna keep playing regardless
The coordination between his left and right hand is beyond human.
came for the sweep, stayed for the melody
It's like a combination of Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson. Magic!
Ohhh hard technique, but for sure cool. I might practice that technique sometime and use it here and there. I really liked Frank's music he did with Allan Holdwroth.
Lo que toca este tipo es algo de otro planeta, pasan los años y es espectacular, todo un ANIMAL !!!
Sweet, I use the same kind of picks...good to know, I get a lot of flack for using those round triangles, and I use my finger to get harmonics. I met Frank at a Vital Information concert, real nice guy like Holdsworth
NOBODY sweeps like Frank! His magic is not the pick hand but incredible fret hand damping! Like no other. That's why most "sweep picking players" sound like shit. IMO. Thanks Troy and Mr. Gambale!
Joey Grijalva then you realise that his bendings are for 90% out of tune and his vibrato sucks. ..
Joey Grijalva Richie Kotzen and Jason Becker are great sweep picking players as well
@@jonrocker1983 He does a lot of unusual 8th to 9th, minor 3rd to 4th, 5th to 6th bends. Train your ear, then tell people they're out of tune. And idk what's wrong with his vibratos, it's not like those '70s "sitting on a washing machine" fast and weak vibrato, FFS.
meinukey if you say so.....
'jonrocker' -- if you think his playing is out of tune and his vibrato sucks then keep it to yourself, his style isnt for you, hes a master of playing and teaching, also his playing is rooted in jazz-fusion style since early on, not ROCK like your name. And he never tried to play the same like many so called virtuosos do. Thats why he keeps his picking had OFF the fretboard and seldom relies on the all too typical hammer on, pull off, tapping or legato techniques, and common cliche phrasing, this gives him a sound in my opinion much closer to the actual traditional sound of string instruments and less cliched gimmickery like 'insert incalculable no. of other guitarists here'. If you read some of his books his technique is very innovative and his approach to melody. Or you can stick to crapping in the comments. He at the least deserves the accolades that Malmsteen receives. Thats at the least.
Amazing Gambale ! He stands among the greatest
Easily one of the 10 best guitar players of all time.
akrivos
nai
Yes, he is!
That solo make a me cry lol
So beautiful
I still have his “Speed Picking” book & CASSETTE, & still practice the techniques he taught back then.
He's one of the best guitarist in the world and a nice guy too.
Gambale and Holdsworth. The beginning and the end. Both have total freedom in their playing.
Don't forget Eric Johson
@@realtruenorth EJ is a great player but as I said Gambale and Holdsworth are the beginning and the end. There's really nowhere else to go.
@@rockzilla5150 Paco de Lucia,, is another
you scan the web and you see good players, then you find a clip of frank.
I still think frank is one of the most accomplished guitarist out there, love his knowledge and passion
get guthrie govan on rhode island shred picking
Amen to that.
guthrie!
Dicken Krr Guthrie isn't an outstanding picker, but he is damn good at everything else and top notch at legato. Paul Gilbert is a guy that should be invited, Paul sounds more aggresive and fluent when it comes to alt picking. No offence to Guthries fans, i love he's playing and he is overall better guitarist but Paul is worlds best picker.
Glenn Lambson that’s true but not many people can play alternate picking on the Rhode Island Shred..have a look on Guthrie’s Rhode Island shred then see those accuracy combinations of cross picking and two or three notes per strings alternate picking it’s just amazing to watch
Glenn Lambson i think Guthrie is an amazing picker, he just chooses to mix legato with alternate, that’s why he sounds the way he does and composed the way he does.
He is one of the originals and the best.
Frank has everything in his playing. What a living legend. Love his techniques for his entire approach to playing, so smooth, fluid and just over all pleasant to listen to. I’m definitely a fan of his music, very inspiring, now I want to grab my guitar and play all day. Nothing better to do during this pandemic lock down we’re having right now. Why not play guitar as much as humanly possible? I’m gonna say in the last two weeks I’ve played more guitar than I have in the whole month prior. Thank you for the awesome video.
what an amazing man and the "cello like" lines are very inspiring. thank you friends
In the late 80's, his playing was such a mystery to me... Now i economy pick and sweep (a little) like any other guy, we really have it easy with youtube and all. Great video.
Speaking of the sweep technique, He’s the king of the “Broom Challenge.”

Generations to come, you’ll see why I said, what Said. :)
Frank is an Amazing guitarist and by far the best teacher Ever!!!
Absolutely astounding player and music sounding beautiful.
"It's kind of hard" ... the kind of hard that is really hard.
I love you frank for these feelings that move and touch the soul.
Music will not only be music for the music if you are able to touch the soul. It is this draft the music makes a message of the musician.in the end it is no longer the amplifier or the guitar, it is the answer to the question, do I have something to say what this world should hear? then it will only be my expression to say something to this person I want to reach! It becomes my music and no other. And then it is your identity on your instrument that is unmistakable !
Thank you for that and your existence in this world !!
What is the song title of the intro tune please? ❤️
No title that I am aware of - it's the intro solo that Frank put together for our interview. If this becomes a song on one of Frank's album in the future, you never know.
Troy Grady thanks for replying! Wow, that means a lot to me. I’ve learnt so much from you, your the number one teacher in the world hands down (in my opinion and my friends) thank you so much you’ve made my night👍🏽❤️🥇🎸🎶🎼
@@troygrady Can you please upload on UA-cam the entire intro solo?
Simply amazing playing. Frank is just the best. Does anyone know the name of the backing track?
been years since i listened to him with s.smith. He's even tastier note choice now.
Taking me back with this comment. Gambale, Smith, Hamm....... If you are reading this and haven't heard it, go find it. One of the best trios to ever be in the same room. Dare I say make the Winery dogs or Rush blush.
Wow .. gambale is getting old .... amazing amazing piece of musicianship ... what is the name of this wonderful instrumental? !
Your profile pic reveals you have a good taste. I love that album, some of Marty's best work
@@gerben880 thank you so much for your gracious comment!! I agree "Scenes" holds a special place in my heart. What are your top 10 instrumental albums of all time?
Doing it while sweeping is kinda hard, he says, and does it effortlessly....
Hard for mere mortals like us
Impresionante Frank cómo siempre
Frank does claim to have "invented" sweeping with the odd number of notes per string until changing direction thing. He is unbelievably fluid whilst retaining gutsy guitar attack and tones. Great guy too. Nice inclusion Troy!
Does or does not? In person he's always been pretty forthright that the technique has at some level always been out there in our "guitar consciousness". But as you're alluding, I would say what Frank did was give it structure and rules. The sweeping math of odds and evens, even though it seems obvious in hindsight, is a legit engineering way of thinking about things.
I did mean "DOES": as per back in the late 80's the VHS tape "Sweep Picking & Monster Lick" that he made. His 3 notes per string in major scale modes was a great step forward for myself, even though I dont sweep or use economy picking at all. Im all alternate picking. 3 note per string scales still work wonders!
Of course now Im watching your videos Im going to expand my technique into the pick slanting methods. Im not much of a fan of sweeping though Frank does make it sound great. And of course its more efficient. Ill sign up for your courses online and hope to refine my methods and speeds. I followed Mclaughlins & Meolas advice from the 70/80's magazine interviews about alternating, triplets, anchoring the right hand and string skipping/chordal picking.
I don't know who invented sweep picking, but it wasn't Frank Gambale - great player that he is. Alex Murphy claims elsewhere in these comments that Les Paul invented it. I've never noticed Les sweeping but that probably says more about me than Les. I can tell you that Dave Creamer was sweep picking (and known for his intervalic playing) long before I ever heard of Frank Gambale. I know because I studied with Dave back in the mid-late '70's (when a young Joe Satriani was also studying with Dave). Dave never hustled to make it big but was well known in certain circles (played on Miles' On The Corner). Here's an example of Dave's playing, also his composition ('75): ua-cam.com/video/wRXlGcLek3Y/v-deo.html.
Robert Mayer sweeping per se is just raking. Django did some of it back in the 20’s!
But to formulate it to be at its near maximum efficiency that WAS Frank. Besides Frank only got known years after he sorted out his way of playing sweep. In his early 80’s video he referred to how he got frustrated with alternate picking “10 to 15 years before” suggesting he had a handle on it as far back as the 60’s. Certainly no one else seems to have organized and taught it en made as Frank did. And used it almost exclusively in his playing.
This is crazy i was just looking at a Frank Gamble guitar like you Yellow one from the 80s and then you just poped up how crazy is that you have been one of my all time favorite players of all time you and Allen Holsworth
Great solo but also what a gorgeous guitar! The conversation and then instruction was more insane!
God I wish a guy like this was around to take lessons from !
Praise to a master
What a beautiful style he has! wow
Power, elegance and so melodic. Every note is crisp and clean and every note is there to add to the music - not just to show off Frank's awesome virtuoso technique...
and he's a nice guy, too!
I can't find the words to describe!
Frank Gambale is the epitome of innovation, mature tasteful playing, Melodic. He practically invented Sweep Picking as we know it today. But he is so much more than a shredder. He is the whole package. And he loves to teach. To me it's Frank and Allan, a step ahead of everyone else.
Nonostante le nuove generazioni siano andate oltre sarà sempre un grande e ci mette l'anima..
Damn I didn't know the Hitman from Breaking Bad could jam like this
Mike Aleshire Mike!
"Truth in Shredding" Holdsworth & Gambale. the "Left Hand of God" and the "Right Hand of God", together just that one time.
Wow, thanks for bringing in this amazing legend and innovator! Great lesson!
Frank gambale is very hard to copy... because his feel on playing is different 🥺 Franky is a Legend
Most people can't even be interesting when they sweep and then we have Frank sweeping harmonics. Jeez, man.
Shred done tastefully, not mindless or blatantly flashy. That's what I've always aspired towards.
Franks tone is absolutely stunning!!! Beautiful his melodies are insane
Man, I came here from listening to Matthew Mancuso...these individuals are wicked! And, I know the list goes on, but not much longer imo
His playing is a rare breed of sheer musicality and blazing technique. Without breaking a sweat.
You know you’re getting good when Frank Gambale compliments your sound! Great work Troy!!!
This is truly amazing. His vibrato is beautiful
Brilliant stuff, Frank. I'm a fan forever.
Frank G , I was in his first class in 96' at LA Music Academy. He knows the guitar as well as any man on the planet! Maybe the best!
Delightful guy. Was at a guitar clinic of his back in the 80's and he was giving away his Live CD. He asked the crowd if anyone knew what the capital of Australia was. Everyone sat there stumped and I'm not usually one of those guys but school paid off and after a long awkward silence and a couple of "Sydney" and "Melbourne" shouts (more silence), then I said, Canberra. He signed my CD and it said , "You lucky...".
Frank's sweeps are so unbelievably clean. And the note choice for the sweeps is just magical.
I just Love 💓 the fluidity of his musical virtuosity etc 😨😰🤦🏻♂️
Great video great musician ! He’s one of those guys where everything seems flawless and easy
God you don’t hear a singing guitar like that anymore, way past technical brilliance straight from the heart to the strings
Finally hear a guitar that isn't all Djent djent chug chug harmonic squeal followed by high pitched alarm noises
True, still I think there's not enough silence, too many notes without spaces with silence, which when done correctly makes the notes you do play that much more meaningful.
but that's usually the case with gifted players, the technique stands in the way of musicality.
lmao *ahem* Charles Caswell
Stop watching Meshuggah vids
2 words: Allan Holdsworth
STOP USING DJENT!!! Its NOT a thing and even meshuggah will tell you that!!!
Damn that was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful ❤️
Richie Kotzen & or Greg Howe
Richie doesnt use pick.
texbls, ya his hand technique, is equally amazing, just different.
I just barely noticed a coupla weeks ago (Im a practitioner of 'Drum☆Majick.) Did he always play w/out a pick? like in the early SHRAPNEL stuff?
no man, I think used pick till early 00s then he switched, all the Sharpnel/Poison/Mr Big time he was shredding with a pick. amazing player.
texbls, Sounds bout right, yes he's up there, im more impressed with his volume of catchy, well orchestrated songs & albums, his creativity seems cosmic.
great singer also.
is there something, frank can't play ? The only one who comes close is the late Shawn Lane
He's obviously an upward pickslanter with upstrokes and a thin pick, thus the harmonics! ;)
Kinda thinking that the big Home Depot looking muting thing might be helping a bit too.
@@brianhinnant6015 I am thinking that it was just the "shred cam" for the up close shot of his technique
