Rickenbacher is the most popular in hip hop right now because of how it cuts through. 3 out of my favorite producers only used one bass plugin for basslines and it's Richenbacher. When not using a real bass
Not only, all distortion metal bass players used this model, Motorhead, Manowar, Metallica to name a few. I really like it when I have to play extra melodic lines and I want them to be Heard
best thing about ez bass- audio to midi. that's why i use it) i record bass parts on my guitar, then with ez bass make em sound like bass (octave lower). as long as other plugins don't have audio to midi, i don't care how good they sound)
Great video, I use the ample sound bass(Love the Jaco fretless!), and I don't always replace it with a live bassist. With the right plug-ins in the DAW, I have been able to do most things with it.
I hope you have been getting good service from Modo. I’ve been using it for a couple of years, it just feels like an electric bass sound to me and the performance elements are great. It also starts almost instantly as it’s a physical model rather than samples. But if it sounded crap, this wouldn’t matter. I have Trillian (which is excellent for synth-ish and less traditional bass sounds), the Waves bass player instrument comes with my subscription and I’ve tried Ample, which is a close second for me. But Modo just feels more alive than all the sample based plugins, for me. YMMV but I’ve spent decades looking for something I can use when I don’t want to, or can’t play, a particular bass track. I’ve been really happy with Modo.
Icon Bass is my favourite right now before that was Prime bass , they are all so good these days if you can play a little it's possible to get some very realistic results . Not tried the Modo basses yet maybe it's time😁
MODO bass is very good but my preference is EZBass as the programming is so much better than MODO bass which uses key switches and I found slides tricky to do.
For the price of a top bass plugin you can get an Harley Benton bass, eventually swap pickups, and play the parts. Something really performed, even with a little bit worse tone, always beats hands down a midi Groove. That's my opinion
Some people are better at playing on a keyboard. Some people may want midi data. Some want a very specific bass sound, that can only be achieved with an expensive bass.
@@danielschenker9874 playing on a midi keyboard yes. I understand that and it's still a performance. As long it's not heavily quantized and edited... About the expensive bass sound, I'm very much free of the marketing hype. Nowadays an affordable instrument with a free amp plugin can deliver a very good tone! The bigger difference is always on the performance.
Mike your a champ. I have had the Rick plugin forever. I'm such a dunce. I never noticed the extra goodies.. Also I have a Question. For some reason i was thinking that Ezbass articulations do not follow when you drag and drop to your daw timeline. Great vid Mike...
As far as I know Kontakt based VSTi have the issue that you need to undload and reload them in the DAW to change presets, that was mentioned in a review about B3 Organ plugins. Regarding IK Multimedia. When I 1st bought VSTs from them the installation and licening process was not a mess so I decided not to buy anything from them never ever. Did they improve now? When watching the review of B3 organ then the product had an issue with sweller and/or leslie. Could not be used with a certain controller and they didn't do anything to fix it. So .. IK Multimedia is also a nogo for me same as with Kontakt libs. You're mileage may vary. Nevertheless a brilliant review, many thanks.
I've been using Waves CLA Bass for a while now - but I'm using it for the enhanced sound I get while playing my Jazz straight in, I always feel like I'm cheating if I don't do the real thing "play real bass" (usually). I have a bunch of bass plugins but really do like the Waves one the best for the rich tones (even over Modo) - that said, I would not recommend anything Waves to anyone these days.
I don't fully agree with your top because your number 1 position that you put is a modeled vsti not sampled (they are not samples), personally my top would be like this 1 Icon Bass🥇✅I love their southern funk style sound, realism and slap 2 Ez Bass 2 🥈✅His realism, his articulations and his tone 3 Prime Bass 🥉✅Similar to iconic Bass but a little cleaner 4 Modo Bass ✅Although it's not my number one, it sounds very good and realistic even though they are not samples. 5 Ample Bass Jazz ✅ like the tone that is jazz style Funk style, And mainly the function that when you hit the key hard on a midi controller it gives the slap something that all vsti should have without needing to use the Keys switches. As an honorable mention, I would put the vst and d e waves, it sounds realistic and has some good articulations.
I have all of these but surprised you have missed the best by far. Personally I think Trillian is way better than any of these. I try to use other bass emulations but find my self 90% of the time going back to trillian on true stacato for sound
There are some cool bass libraries, but i bought a bass just for recording, and aint nothing like the real thing. Tough to get a good recording tho...just like a lot of mic'd instruments.
I found the Ample Sound P-Bass to be a lot more authentic tone wise than the Modo, I think because the Ample Sound basses are deep sampled, whereas the Modo is synthesized. It sounds okay, but a bit plastic IMO.
Modo bass looks useful. How do you find dealing with IK Multimedia these days? Anything to be wary of? In particular the Product Manager? Is internet connection needed to run ModoBass?
Many of their GUIs VSTs are resource hogs ... I have top tier system ... own most of the major software packages (e.g. Komplete, Toontrack, Spectrasonics, ... you name it) ... and IKM concepts are great ... but their customer service and loyalty for long time customers is beyond poor ... I have spent so much money on their hardware and software .... I REGRET I ever bought into their ecosystem .... thank goodness ... there are so many option now for musicians .... unfortunately ... I could never recommend IKM any longer ...
I don’t contact IKM very much but I’ve found them helpful when I did. The Product Manager works fine and is simple to operate. You don’t need an Internet connection once you’ve installed the products. Just to contradict the other reply, I had the original MODO bass, did a trial of the new version and when I bought some MESA amps for Amplitube and the entry level Tonex, they also gave me MODO Bass 2 for free. They’ve done this before with other products. I have no idea why but was very grateful!
I’m sure there’s some way but a big problem with using something like the Roland GK-3 tech (or whatever Roland is up to with their guitar synth stuff) is that bass frequencies, being lower than guitar frequencies, take longer to form a waveform. Latency has always been a problem for guitar synths that use real guitars but the problem is twice as bad with a bass and musically even worse because bass is as much a rhythm instrument as it is a tonal one, in most uses. But there may well be something out there by now. One solution I used for a short time was to record my bass into Melodyne and, off-line, after recording, get Melodyne to convert to MIDI. It worked fairly well with the big problem that I couldn’t hear the baseline in context until after playing it. I just find it easier to play a bass when I want to have a bass (and audio editing is so good these days that I can tweak the audio almost as well as MIDI anyway) but use a keyboard for anything else. I use Modo quite a bit - ideally just to get ideas down quickly with full MIDI editing but I do find I end up keeping the Modo track more and more often because it sounds so good if I don’t have the time or inclination to get a good bass sound.
Hi are there any plugins that work like a mixer ? Basically I have a Bassline already recorded and I just want to use a plugin to make it sound better ?
Any digital audio workstation (DAW) will allow you to do this. If you want an inexpensive but still very powerful option to get started, I'd take a look at Reaper. Or are you saying that you want a plug-in that works in standalone mode without needing a DAW?
You can also use the ampeg svt suite plug in if you have a DI bass line recorded already. Feed it through whatever amp/cab combo you like and you can even change mics. But it’s just a modeler, no midi capability that I’m aware of.
With those prices, they should bring Marcus Miller in the box... They sound worthy, that's true. But WOW, they're expensive... ...now I know why so many music producers try to get some bass guitar and learn to play it.
I use Ample Sound ABU, and it sounds great. However, I find that there's not much information on how to use it, especially for the slides. As an example, an E on the second string (D) cannot be "slided" as well as when it's played from third string (A), and I did not find yet how to program this.
I knew the number 1 bass had to be Modo Bass 2...its very tweakable....but I notice with a lot of these bass plugins that they go off key from time to time...have you had this problem?
As usual, great video. I agree that Modo has to be the best, probably by far, and I was really wanting to buy it, but I had so many issues with the free version. First I thought it was my dinosaur 10 year old laptop. But after upgrading to a machine with at least three times the performance, I thought everything would be good to go. Unfortunately, I experienced the exact same issues....Random notes, several cents detune for no reason, and persistant , 'stuck' notes......sometimes requiring closing CW to releaase the note. After searching many, many forums, and the IK support I found that many others had encountered identical issues, and IK has not even bothered to address the issue, with nothing other than lame solutions, none of which worked. Have you ever encountered such issues, and if so, please share your solutions, as I would love to use it on my next production, as I was intending to, but instead opted for Bass Fingers, as it was cheap at the time.

Hey Mike...I hope you're well. Quick question, I'm trying to use a Blue Yeti USB mic in Cakewalk. However, when I select in in the device options, my Focusrite does not show up for output in playback options. Is it either or like, I can't do both at the same time?
