"Quentin Tarantino and feet, man. Weird." Ashleigh you've arrived at the single most agreed-upon and correct film nerd opinion in the history of film nerdery. You're one of us now.
I'm not a foot fetishist by a long shot. I could care less if my women even have feet! Well I mean except for the fact that I enjoy nature hikes. Point is, they're utilitarian to me. BUT I don't see why people get so weirded out by guys with foot fetishes. Seems pretty harmless and innocent to me. What's so wrong with being particularly fixated on that part of a woman's anatomy? Besides which, you know who else has a obsessive fixation on women's feet? MOST WOMEN! So many women go to such elaborate lengths to adorn, costume and pedicure their feet. It is a Rectangle instead of a Square in Pulp Fiction cuz they changed the Formatting, so the video got stretched. I don't know why people don't get this. It is pretty obvious.
Thank you, Ashleigh. You reacted to the Achilles heel cut exactly as I do every time I watch this movie. Buck's entire death scene makes me so uncomfortable but it is so deserved.
"Is she aware...her daughter...is still alive?" Yeah, imagine seeing that in theaters before the sequel came out. I saw this in theaters, I was 9. My jaw hit the floor at those famous final eight words of the film. Brilliant. Also, you were part right. On the sword was the signet/insignia for Hattori Hanzo. And the fact Beatrix had one offended O-Ren greatly as she wanted one but Hattori did not give her one.
I saw it in the theater when it first came out and I agree. The sheer, visceral feeling when he asked about her knowing about her daughter. It just hit so hard and waiting for volume 2 to come out… Damn. Best part of the film.
Don't think of Vol. 2 as a sequel. It's all basically one film, he cut it into two parts because it was so long. The yellow outfit she wears is a tribute to the suit Bruce Lee wore in "Game of Death".
The studio cut it in to 2 parts because it was too long. If Tarantino had his way it would have been one movie with an intermission, like Gone With the Wind for example.
The studio was Harvey Weinstein's. He butchered a lot of movies they released with his own cutting. In the case of Tarantino's movies, he let him do what he wanted when actually Kill Bill would have been better with some scenes cut like the swordmaker scene which slowed this movie to a grind and in Part 2 when she meets another dude at a bar that was also pointless.
Ash: "You're clearly a badass, but I don't think you can take on twelve people." The bride: "hold my sword. No, on second thought I'm going to need that."
*Fun Fact:* The reason why the bar fight scene was in black and white was because the MPAA thought the scene was too bloody, and the movie got an NC-17. So to get the intended R rating, they changed the color scheme to meet their demands.
As "tactical grace" said in a reply down the board: If you look at the plane, not a private jet but a passenger aircraft and with slots set aside for anyone to bring on board their katana like cup holders. This is Tarantino’s fantasy version of Japan set in the Kill Bill universe.
in Kill Bill Vol. 1, when O-Ren threatens the Bride with “I hope you saved your energy. If you haven’t you may not last five minutes,” the Bride takes exactly 4 minutes and 59 seconds from the music cue to slice O-Ren’s scalp off.
Forget those (well, actually don't, both totally need to be seen, but...), Ashley should recognize Annelle Dupuy Desoto's actress from Steel Magnolias...
The whole Hanso segment from when he takes her up to see the swords to when she receives the sword is beautiful. I wish you would have been able to keep the music for it.
this movie has like 1000 fun facts behind it, my favorite has to be the reason it cuts to black and white in the second to final fight scene was because the amount of blood was too much for an R rating so Tarantino compromised with black and white and they accepted it.
@tconlon251 Which means that if you went into the movie knowing your snakes (I didn't), you would have known that Elle would be (for any reason) unable to kill the Bride with the poison she was going to use. Makes the scene even better.
You can find a copy of Kill Bill : The whole Bloody affair, which i have been told has the film in sequential order vol 1 and 2 instead of jumping around, as well all other the scenes blood guts and gore that were orginal.
She should have to go to one of the midnight screenings with the audience play along. Just so she can get her Rocky Horror Picture Show virgin card stamped.
@@shaunbryan3421 Are there still midnight screenings, especially during this Covid mess? I really hope "kids these days" (I'm old) are getting to experience RHPS that way!
In the Tarantino universe, some movies are “in world” and others are ‘movies’ in the universe. Kill Bill is a movie based on “Fox Force Five” which was mentioned by Uma Thurman‘a character in Pulp Fiction.
Except that in Fox Force Five, they were themed as foxes, not snakes. They were secret agents, not criminals. There was a man in the Deadly Vipers. Oh yeah, and they were called the Deadly Vipers, not the Fox Force Five. I know a lot of people noticed the similarities, but the obvious truth here is that Quentin is just a little unoriginal, not that he was deliberately making a Fox Force Five movie. The superficial similarities are there, but the differences are far too numerous to make it valid.
@@13Yeared During Pulp Fiction, yes. Directly based on Fox Force Five, no. Quentin also said he was inspired by the films Lady Snowblood and The Bride Wore Black. Quentin has never once said it was Fox Force Five, and that's a dude who can't stop talking about his own movies. He's listed a dozen inspirations and themes for Kill Bill, and not one of them was Fox Force Five. *This* isn't news. What you've gotten hold of here is a popular but superficial fan theory based on some shallow visual similarities with no confirmation.
That's not really a talent so much as how a movie works. She just doesn't wait to find out the answer and is usually talking over it anyway. I find it quite frustrating.
This movie was never intended to be a complete movie, it's just that the movie that Tarantino wanted to make was way too long. It should, therefore, really not be judged on its own, judge the two movies as one when you've finished it. Incidentally, I saw Volume 2 first, not realising it was the second half. I don't think it diminished my enjoyment of either one.
Maybe. It was shot as a single movie. There was a debate between QT and the studio during editing how they were going to release the movie. The initial plan was to release it as a 4 hour movie with a intermission. It went back and forth a couple of times.
Yep. It was shot as just one movie but it was too long for theater release so it was cut into two movies. That is why it's called vol 1 and vol 2. It's not a separate sequel but a continuation of the story that was supposed to be one movie.
@@Gtomer and that's why fan edits like The Whole Bloody Affair are so fun, they allow us to see what that original vision might have been like James Rolfe also talks about how he would edit both down to a more reasonable length but still retain all the story from both.
StarkRG With the main significant difference being in the Single Movie, that the scene where she learns her daughter is still alive is not in it, and we don't learn about that until she shows up to see Bill..... which is why in Kill Bill Vol 2, the bride's reaction to seeing her daughter doesn't make sense. I think I would've liked it as just one big movie
Ya, after both movies were out there was super cut called Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affaire that showed both movies back to back with an intermission.
That cliffhanger is one of the best. I remember the entire theatre just going "Oh my G-d" and hearing so much conversation as people were leaving the theatre
I love how Ashley will say "At least they didn't.." or "I thought they were going to do (insert nasty act) glad they didn't..." right before they do what she just mentioned. Then her reaction. Too funny.
Jackie Brown has been my personal favorite for a long time, and ash definitely needs to see it after vol 2, but Once Upon A Time In Hollywood threatens to take the top spot more everytime I watch it.
"The House of Blue Leaves" was designed after a restaurant called "Gonpachi" in Tokyo. They have pictures of the owner with Quentin Tarantino hanging on the walls. It's very cool.
Fun fact: Kill Bill was heavily influenced by a Japanese film called Lady Snowblood. The actress in Snowblood sang the main theme for the film and that song was also used in Kill Bill. There are actually scenes in Kill Bill that are reproductions of scenes from Lady Snowblood. Someday you should really give that film a watch.
The Kill Bill series is one of my wife's favourites. When she first watched it I bet she never thought she'd be stuck in bed and a wheelchair for nearly three years and have to learn to walk again. She's getting on fine now and really loving your reviews :-) Also, she hasn't killed anyone... yet ;-)
She's so pretty even with the eye patch. Who is she? Darry Hannah-- Anelle from "Steel Magnolias" and star of "Splash" with you future ex-husband Tom Hanks. You have got to react to that movie.
I agree with you on Part 1. It's a great, fun movie, but for me, Part 2 is what makes it all gel together and it has more emotional beats that I like better than in the first.
One of the most missed aspects of this film is that this is an actual "movie" inside of Tarantino's actual universe (thus the over the top blood) it's not like Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds, Django, etc which all happen in the "real" world of Tarantino's films.
@@popejaimie Actually the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad was supposed to be based on Fox Force Five. Q & U first thought of the idea of making a Fox Force Five movie, that would be a in-universe tv-movie, so I guess Mia Wallace would be starring in that. But the story got so crazy, it made no sense that a small movie could be that insane. Plus according to Pulp Fiction the show was never made past pilot, so, again, makes no sense to have a full movie of a failure.
Ashleigh, the yellow colours she was wearing and the motorcycle that was yellow was a big tribute to Bruce Lee and the film The Game of Death 💀, you should look online for clips, love from the 🇬🇧.
And like Game of Death, The Bride needs to take on a number of different bosses to get to the top. It is actually quite amazing to think that Bruce basically made up (though another Martial Arts HK movie did it before) the game style concept of going up each level to fight a boss of a higher skill. Something a lot of games adopted and still use as a concept.
@@gutz1981 you know I never thought about the similarities between Game of death and Kill Bill other than the tracksuit, WOW you are spot on with the different opponents or bosses she had to fight, shouldn’t Tarintino 💰 royalties to Golden Harvest studios or the family of Bruce Lee!!!!!
Since you're turning into a QT fan, you should also watch Reservoir Dogs, his directorial debut. Not the same level of action/gore as Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill 1&2, but the promise it shows makes it a worthy forerunner of Tarantino's subsequent films. Please make it a point to watch Reservoir Dogs.
Or you could watch 'True Romance' which he wrote but did not direct. He sold the scrip to fund Reservoir Dogs. TR is a decent film but not great, you can see hints of QT, but you can also feel somebody else at the helm.
@@SeymourAlexander True Romance was a masterpiece with an amazing cast. DEFINITELY worth a watch. Also, going down the Tarantino-adjacent route, From Dusk Till Dawn would be a great choice as well for Hallowbeans. But True Romance, for my money, is just an amazing movie all round.

Lucy Liu's segment in Kill Bill is so good. I also enjoyed her character in the 1999 film "Payback" starring Mel Gibson. Have you seen it? If not, please add it to your list!
This is my favorite Tarantino movie. I'm a big Lucy Liu fan as well, I'll watch her in anything (you'll like her in the Charlie's Angels movies and "Lucky # Slevin with Bruce Willis). You should have recognized Daryl Hannah from Steel Magnolias, she's also in "Blade Runner", "Splash", "Roxanne" and "A Few Good Men". If you'd grown up in the '70s you'd have recognized Bill's voice as that of David Carradine, star of the TV show "Kung Fu".
lucky # slevin is a vastly underrated movie! morgan freeman, ben kingsley, bruce willis, josh hartnett, lucy liu, and great supporting actor, robert forster. i was watching jackie brown one time, and as it was ending max cherry (played by robert forster) was on the phone and i saw lucky # slevin was on so i flipped the channel, and it was at the part where robert forster is sitting in his car talking on the phone. i know it's kind of a dumb story, but it made me chuckle.
@@hoopsmccann639 You forgot Stanley Tucci, Corey Stoll, Myketl T. Williamson and the late Danny Aiello. I was one of the few people who saw "Slevin" in the theaters, and I loved it.
The engraving on the katana is called a Shishi. It has magical powers and the power to ward off evil spirits. The Shishi is a noble beast who protects the entrance to the temple/shrine. Also you will see them in front of some homes in Japan or Okinawa. When I lived in Okinawa my grandparents and other relatives had Shishi's guarding the entrance to their homes.
Yes, Lucy Liu is gorgeous. Part of the reason I started watching Elementary and now I like the whole show :-)

Lucy Liu? Just one word: Ling. (And yes, I also started on Elementary "back in the day" (time flies like an arrow… fruit flies like a banana") because of her)
Watching Tarantino you get two things. The first is the overall work, the second is the individual moments. What I love about his films is that there is always some portion you can point to and say "Even if the overall work was okay, this one part was amazingly well done." I like Django better than Kill Bill, but I can watch the whole Hattori Hanzo sequence on repeat. QT's portrayal of respect is awesome. Watch it again and see how the complaining assistant in the restaurant is serving in the sword presentation scene. I can't wait for you to watch all of QT's work.

You are so funny and down to earth and honest in your reactions. 2021 has not been a good year for me and finding your channel and the joy your videos bring me have been a life saver (literally). If I may suggest: - What’s Eating Gilbert’s Grape _ with Johnny Depp and a young Leonardo DiCaprio (who should have won an Oscar for this performance) - Mr. Holland’s Opus _ a longun but a goodun with a great soundtrack starring Richard Dreyfuss - The Fifth Element _ a really fun and funny scifi-adventure starring Bruce Willis - Empire of the Sun _ a lesser known Steven Spielberg WWII masterpiece starring a young Christian Bale
Ah the US release. The Japanese release has a longer animated scene and more importantly does NOT cut to black and white during the Crazy 88 fight... glorious
The anime also reminds me of the uncut and uncensored version of Kite (band in US, Japan an other counties but you can get it in Italian with English subtitles). Search it at your own risk.
I was so waiting for this and it did not disappoint. Definately need to watch Vol. 2 and the rest of the Tarantino films. Inglorious , Django, and Jackie Brown are probably my favorites behind Pulp. My daughter came in while watching this and said, "She is so pretty" - talking about you - almost the same way as you do in the reviews.
The Bride's yellow jumpsuit is an homage to the suit Bruce Lee wore in Game of Death. O-Ren is played by Lucy Liu, an actress who made her name on the show Alley McBeal and appeared in many movies in the late 90s-early 2000s. She was in the Charlie's Angels movies as well as this one and the Mel Gibson film Payback.
The scene where she plucked out the eye was a homage to Five Fingers of Death and the yellow suit she wore was the suit that the late Bruce Lee wore in Game of Death (He passed away before the film was finished, he only filmed the end fight and the director of Enter the Dragon chopped the footage and shot a movie around it)
The eye plucking is also a great way to make us accept that it is a thing that can be done. So we don't doubt it when it is mentioned in vol.2 that Pai Mei plucked out an eye. But her doing it so early in the first movie, we don't have it in fresh memory that she can. Perfect setup and excellent payoff later on.
During the fight with O-Ren, she says that she hoped The Bride had conserved her strength, otherwise she won’t last five minutes. From the moment the fight starts, it lasts 4:59 before her death.
Pulp Fiction is arguably his best work. The known but have yet to hit their prime actors, a complex but easily digestible story, a soundtrack to end soundtracks (kill bill also has an amazing soundtrack). Everything works to elevate this movie to a different level. Reservoir Dogs is another with all the same elements that is just top notch.
You are right, blood doesn't really erupt and paint the walls like that when you stab someone or cut off a limb. But it's a well-worn samurai/kung fu movie trope and Tarantino is referencing it self consciously.
So you were right later on...the animal stamp into the metal was Hattori Hanzo's signature. So all of his swords would use it. (The actor who played him, Shinichi “Sonny” Chiba, recently died of Covid a few weeks ago.) The yellow and black motorcycle outfit is a homage to Brue Lee's outfit in the "Game of Death".
Trivia time: Quentin came up with the idea for Kill Bill after he and Uma were talking on the set of Pulp Fiction and came up with the idea of a character they called "The Bride".
I know!! if you have it already edited then why not put it out next day .. it kinda takes away from the movie if you wait a few days ( not to complain and of course i'v seen these movies before ) I LOVE watching and supporting this channel :)
Thanks for the reaction Ashleigh. If you want to see an awesome Quintin T written movie that almost nobody has reacted to you should check out True Romance.
I love these two movies. I love your reaction, too. I wish you would react to Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown for an amazing performance from Samuel L. Jackson.
I was SO excited when you said you were watching this movie! I saw it four times in the theatre. I was in college and most of my friends were film majors, so it was my introduction to Tarantino. I remember being shocked and blown away that I was watching a movie this bloody and violent in a theatre lol!
In Japan, I think it still is legal to carry your sword with you like that (with special documents I would assume) depending on your family position of role. Be it sword maker or martial arts master, the Katana is very personal and NOT taken lightly as in you would not be expected to just give it to a luggage handler if you must travel with it. But don't quote me on this.
No, just no. You most definitely can’t just walk around with a sword here. Additionally, there are very complex rules to construction of ‘blunt’ swords that can be used for kata practice, vs actual real katana. There are very few people capable of producing such items… and production is very regulated
@@TheIppoippo I am allowed to be corrected if I am wrong. I only remember going back like 10+ years ago did I look this up and I remember reading that travel with a katana on a plane was allowed for special class of people or swords. I can't imagine a wealthy or well respected master who MUST travel with their family or personal Katana be told "It must go into the luggage section under the plane." I mean, some of these are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Put the family value of them and given how high up the Japanese put (or at least, use to put honor and family above all else) I would assume that domestic travel with your Katan in this manner was still allowed. Perhaps a on board compromise locker may exist now. But could you imagine and very influential Japanese master or someone from a honored family have their Katana stolen or misplaced while under the plane? How could you not be so pissed off with such social power and not call in a few favors to get everyone on that plane fired? But again, I may be stretched reality with some false sense of tradition that only exists in books and legends. I need to look this up again to confirm if I am right or wrong.
On an international flight? So the TSA is gonna be "hey, you can't have that here!", but then you explain to them that you're flying to Japan and they're going to say "oh, in that case right on through"? Uh, yeah.
@@charlesrense5199 To be fair, she did travel from Okinawa to Japan after she got the sword. It is rather similar in a lot of respects, I would imagine as is Cyprus with Greece. But like I said later in my reply comment, I was mostly referring to domestic flights within Japan.

The samurai as a social class were abolished 150 years ago. Their world only exists now in fiction or for historical tourism. Swords must be kept in a secure case in the cargo hold & they must have special documentation even to be allowed to travel. I thought ..omg she is not going to be able to handle the carnage coming. 12 is just a blood drop in the bucket.
*Fun Fact:* The reason why the bar fight scene was in black and white was because the MPAA thought the scene was too bloody, and the movie got an NC-17. So to get the intended R rating, they changed the color scheme to meet their demands.
But the Evil Dead 2013 ending was ok in their eyes? MPAA always messing up.
amazing example of limitations actually leading to more creativity
As "tactical grace" said in a reply down the board:
If you look at the plane, not a private jet but a passenger aircraft and with slots set aside for anyone to bring on board their katana like cup holders.
This is my favorite fun fact of this movie.
I love this fun fact so much 😃
This makes me so happy 😁
I never noticed that, but I'm not even slightly surprised.

"So pretty even with the eyepatch." Daryl Hannah is also in "Splash" with FEH Tom Hanks (and John Candy) and "Blade Runner" with FEH Harrison Ford.
Forget those (well, actually don't, both totally need to be seen, but...), Ashley should recognize Annelle Dupuy Desoto's actress from Steel Magnolias...
Also the mom in A Walk to Remember
And Roxanne with Steve Martin
Not to mention Steel Magnolias!
Anyone see Crazy People (1990) with Dudley Moore?
Why is it only now after 20 years of watching this did I notice the cereal the gun was fired from is called "Kaboom"?
You know with Tarantino, there's tons of little details...
Which was, btw, a real cereal back in the seventies.
Lol, I never noticed that!
Ashleigh: "I'm gonna to think you like to do dirty things to dead bodies..."

I think that is the reason for the blue silhouette scene, too. It is pretty great when even your compromises make the movie better.
Fun fact, if you can find the Japanese version, it retains the color in that scene. So you get to see EVERYTHING.
@tconlon251 Which means that if you went into the movie knowing your snakes (I didn't), you would have known that Elle would be (for any reason) unable to kill the Bride with the poison she was going to use. Makes the scene even better.
@tconlon251 Fun Fact on Snakes: snakes are not poisonous, they are venomous.
You can find a copy of Kill Bill : The whole Bloody affair, which i have been told has the film in sequential order vol 1 and 2 instead of jumping around, as well all other the scenes blood guts and gore that were orginal.

In the Tarantino universe, some movies are “in world” and others are ‘movies’ in the universe. Kill Bill is a movie based on “Fox Force Five” which was mentioned by Uma Thurman‘a character in Pulp Fiction.
Also the katana Butch uses in Pulp Fiction is a Hattori Hanzo sword.
@@13Yeared It's probably Budd's
Except that in Fox Force Five, they were themed as foxes, not snakes. They were secret agents, not criminals. There was a man in the Deadly Vipers. Oh yeah, and they were called the Deadly Vipers, not the Fox Force Five.
I know a lot of people noticed the similarities, but the obvious truth here is that Quentin is just a little unoriginal, not that he was deliberately making a Fox Force Five movie. The superficial similarities are there, but the differences are far too numerous to make it valid.
@@krannok Except Tarantino confirmed he and Uma came up with the basis of Kill Bill during Pulp Fiction’s production. This isn’t news.

@@Gtomer and that's why fan edits like The Whole Bloody Affair are so fun, they allow us to see what that original vision might have been like
James Rolfe also talks about how he would edit both down to a more reasonable length but still retain all the story from both.
Too funny.

Does that mean Mia Wallace finally became a successful actress?
@@popejaimie Actually the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad was supposed to be based on Fox Force Five.
Q & U first thought of the idea of making a Fox Force Five movie, that would be a in-universe tv-movie, so I guess Mia Wallace would be starring in that.

You are right, blood doesn't really erupt and paint the walls like that when you stab someone or cut off a limb. But it's a well-worn samurai/kung fu movie trope and Tarantino is referencing it self consciously.

Uh, yeah.

@@gutz1981 Nope. If you look at the plane, not a private jet but a passenger aircraft and with slots set aside for anyone to bring on board their katana like cup holders. This is Tarantino’s fantasy version of Japan set in the Kill Bill universe. Japanese airlines take the safety of their passengers just as seriously as any other country and masters of the katana based martial arts do not have the level of social influence you ascribe to them in terms of suspending airport safety rules. The samurai as a social class were abolished 150 years ago. Their world only exists now in fiction or for historical tourism. Swords must be kept in a secure case in the cargo hold & they must have special documentation even to be allowed to travel. On the plus side, it’s extremely unlikely that they will be stolen or even lost, Japan as a society is extremely respectful of other people’s property in general so this would be a hundred times more so for a rare and valuable item like an antique samurai sword. I can remember that when this movie came out (I was in college), there was a rumor that QT was planning another film, using the same child actress, with Vernita Green's daughter coming to find Beatrix Kiddo's daughter to settle the score. People estimated it might come out in 15 years or so which would make the girls about 20 years old. At the time, I thought that was an insane idea and it seemed like it was so far in the future. "It's so long to wait!"
That memory has just shaken itself loose while watching this video and I'm realizing that it's been almost 20 years since watching this for the first time. It feels like this all happened last week- the movie, the conversation with my college bff and her husband, one of the best pizzas I've ever eaten. Even the wicked sinus infection I had at the time, garlic knots with extra garlic to burn the demons out of my sinuses.
u got me hooked on your podcasts. still think your review of blazing saddles was the best
