Little fun fact for you Ash: While shooting the movie in Reno, some of the actresses would leave the set in full habits to visit bars and casinos just to mess with people. Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkenna (Sister Mary Roberts) spoke in an interview about a prank they pulled on room service staff at their hotel. They went back to their room in full habits and then ordered food. When the waiter arrived, Najimy made sure Makkena was sitting in front of the TV starring at a porn flick. The prank however didn't last long as Makkena couldn't hold in her laughter.

As someone who grew up in the favelas from Brazil, you guys have NO IDEA, how great and impactful this movie was back in the day for the poor communities in Brazil.
Imagine going to the school the day after the movie was presented in TV and EVERYBODY talking and singing the songs of this musical.
Everytime I've seen this movie I cried, I'm not even close to the church, but the power that this movie (and all the sequels) have is impossible to put into words.

To answer some of Ashleigh's nun questions:
The really young one, Sister Mary Robert is a novice, that's why she doesn't have the full habit. She would take "temporary vows" that last a certain number of years, then as they draw to an end if she and her community decide to, she can renew them. It's not super uncommon for somebody to just go in for a few years and decide they don't like it, aren't called to it, or just only ever intended for it to be temporary. Sometimes the novice habit is very different (for example all white), sometimes it's an addition like a black garment hanging over a white one where the novice just wears the white, in this case she's got a little hair showing under the veil.
There being a lot of Marys is pretty common in a lot of catholic places, so the middle name gets used, which is often intended by the parents. It's like Southern double first names. Also as religious sisters they may have taken a religious name when they entered the order, and Mary is very very popular. So you'd see the same with taking a double name intending to use the second one as a more personal name.
A vow of poverty means that those nuns literally own nothing, everything is owned by the order and the order provides for basic necessities and job related stuff (so like someone going to school for something would get their education and related supplies paid for), and maybe some personal stuff like a special rosary would be allowed to be kept. A cloistered nun would generally live in a convent and not leave other than maybe to do good works (like teaching in a school, feeding the poor, etc).
Great answer! The only other thing I could think to add to your answer is about the arts and crafts (as Ashleigh put it) the nuns were doing. It looked like they may have been making Rosaries 📿
I believe Mary Robert's headpiece is called a whimper. I remember the term from The Sound of Music, when Maria supposedly wore curlers in her hair underneath it and the other sisters were singing about her non-nun behavior.

Mary Lazarus is played by Mary Wickes. She had been an accomplished actress for many years. Four years after Sister Act, Mary Wickes had her last role, voicing the gargoyle LaVerne in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Sister Act is also a Disney movie.
She was also the busybody housekeeper in White Christmas which Ashleigh reacted to a year ago

Mother Superior is Maggie Smith, who is Prof. McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies; but she is a terrific, well known actress, with a long resume, making you believe her in a range of characters. Some are Jean Brodie, in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie", Desdemona in "Othell" and a favorite of mine, the love interest opposite Peter Ustinov in "Hot Millions".
Loved her in divine secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood aswell.
She SLAYS in Downton Abbey.
She also went toe-to-toe with Diana Rigg in Agatha Christie's Evil Under The Sun.
And shes still kicking ass as an actress today.

My husband moved here (the U.S.) in 1993 from Moldova when he was 13. He missed a lot of 90s movies and music. In our early years together, we watched this and he (an atheist like me) cried through the first and the last songs. Same with Sister Act 2.

Another Whoopie movie I've got great memories of is "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Named after the Rolling Stones song, it's sort of a comedy spy movie.
We had recorded this off a TV broadcast on VHS, and my mother would watch it all the time, so I knew this specific TV edit complete with commercials very well. At some point we got the real commercial release of the movie, and it's always funny seeing the uncensored version of something you always watched with your mother.

Interestingly the Avatar is loosely based on the succession of the Dalai Lama, who is believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be the reincarnation of the Bodhisttva of Compassion Chenrezig. Bodhisattvas are Buddhist saints who have nearly reached true enlightenment, but choose to stay in the cycle of death and rebirth so that they can aid others in escaping it through enlightenment. The current Dalai Lama has said that he will likely choose not to reincarnate any more due to the political situation in Tibet complicating the normal procedure of recognizing new incarnations.

I just learned that at the end, during the concert for The Pope, if you look in the back of the sanctuary, you can see two figures standing there in black suits with black hats and sunglasses: The Blues Brothers!

As for the scene in the casino, she asked if they've seen a Carmelite nun. It's a specific order of nuns that began at Mount Carmel. But when I was little I totally thought she said caramel-like 😂😂😂

I went to Catholic school for 12 years including high school and I sang in the choir. In grade school it was always really slow and what I considered boring songs just like hail holy queen. And when they did the second part of hail holy queen where they did the up-tempo I cheered, clapped along and I laughed my ass off Because I could see the older people in the church going oh dear just like the Reverend mother did in the movie. I love this movie it was filmed in the Saint Pauls Catholic Parish in San Francisco about five minutes from my house where I lived. Glad you like the movie

As a kid, I was a quiet and shy red head who loved to sing so Sister Mary Robert was my hero and inspiration. I'd watch this movie every Sunday and practise singing along. A few years later I was watching the credits and noticed that *(spoilers)* her singing voice was performed by a different person. It BROKE my 8 year old heart. Cried for days. 😪
It's hilarious now, but daaaaamn did I have trust issues for a while after that 😅
Love this movie! I went to an all girls school with nuns in the 90's. Once, they took us to an amusement park and let us run amuck while they watched a greyhound race. Many people would come over asking if they knew Whoopi Goldberg or if they were filming a movie. During choir rehearsals for mass, we were ONLY allowed to sing Salve Regina the Sister Act way ONCE during rehearsal. You KNOW I belted it out ;)
Also we had a really cool nun named Sister Veronica who wore red converse sneakers. She called all the girls "fellas". Oh I could write a sitcom on my days at Catholic school!

This film is like an essay on how to write great characters. The plot isn't even that strong, it's just carried by the characters individuality and their interaction with each other.
I'm right chuffed about Singing in the Rain, when I had a broken leg in highschool some 30 years ago I spent almost two months stuck at home, and the only video tape I had was that one. I watched it pretty much all day long, every day... I could recite it word for word :) It remains my favorite musical of all time to this day.
Not many movies can stand that kind of test .
It helps that "Singin' In The Rain" (1952) tells a great story about Hollywood going from Silent to Sound. Plus it has been called "the musical that even people who HATE musicals like/love." Plus there is the song "You Are My Lucky Star" that "Third Officer Ripley" did "Shatner style.";)
Sister Mary Lazarus in her youth was once the Nosey Housekeeper in the 1954 classic “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby, Danny Kayne, Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney’s Grandmother). I HIGHLY recommend you react to that movie around Christmastime.

I haven't watched this movie since I first saw it in theaters when it came out but I always loved it. It's crazy how just a couple of months after Sister Act 2 came out, Lauryn Hill's first album with The Fugees was released.
You know, it's funny. Your reaction to Kathy Najimy was the same I had as a kid, except that I recognized her from Sister Act when I was watching Hocus Pocus in theaters. 😁

Sister act 2 is great as well! I’d totally recommend that for another reaction! I might say I like it better than the original but that’s a tight race. I love them both.
Sister Act 2 feels a lot more cliched through most of the movie considering how many "troubled class at inner city school turns their lives around thanks to an unlikely connection with an instructor" movies we got in the 90s, but the finale musical number is one of my favorite bits of performance in any movie I've seen and I'm Jewish.
And Sister Act 2 has that legendary high note.
My heart skipped a beat when Ashleigh asked if she should know Diana Ross. I honestly let out an audible gasp. The icon, the voice, the HAIR!, the very definition of fabulous... the one and only... Diana Ross! Woopie's hair in this movie has NOTHIN on Diana's in her most spectacular... woman had hair as big as the most extravagant of cartoon characters, it defied gravity, and she ROCKED IT!! Ashleigh I beg you, please look her up, and you'll understand
The younger sister was a "novice". She was preparing herself for life as a sister but had not taken her final vows. Her whimple (hat) is that of a novice rather than a sister.

EDIT : OMG DID YOU JUST SAY YOU DONT WHO DIANA ROSS IS? Diana was the lead singer of the Supremes (You Cant Hurry Love, Stop in the name of love) and had a widly successful solo career of her own (Im Coming Out, Upside Down) and has dabbled in acting too. You should check out Lady Sings the Blue (a biopic on Billie holiday) and The Wiz (an all black re-telling of The Wizard of Oz - Michael Jackson is in it too).

Ive only see this movie a handful of times in the 90s. It was on HBO every now and then but I actually saw it in theaters with my grandma and I remember she loved it and was laughing like I’ve never seen before. She passed away a few years later at age 69 but thats one memory I have whenever this movie is on and its a good one because I’m almost 40 now 😊

Even though I don't generally think about this movie in my day-to-day life, any time something from it comes up on YT, I'm compelled to watch. Whoopi is so fun, and I had quite the crush on Sister Mary Robert. It just makes me smile so dang much!

The little girl who played young Whoopi in this movie also played young Whoopi in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "Rascals." (And the little boy who played Sir Patrick Stewart's nephew in the episode "Family" also played young Sir Patrick in "Rascals.") And the guy who was killed in front of her was another Star Trek star!
Diana Ross (lead singer of The Supremes) starred as Dorothy in The Wiz (1978). Michael Jackson played Scarecrow, and Richard Pryor was the Wizard of Oz. Bless your little heart!
Fun Trivia fact for you Ashleigh, the little girl playing young Whoopi is Isis Carmen Jones and she also played young Whoopi in Star Trek TNG that same year.
Oh Lord, I love this film. I remember my mum renting it on vhs and dancing round the room to the songs, since then it’s always been my go to movie to raise my soul and bring me joy.

Answering Ashleigh
The order of nuns she's joining is Carmelite which is a Roman Catholic order, so you're correct that it's likely her Mafia boyfriend would interact with that church.
Those are real vows of a religious order.
For Carmelites the vows are;
Poverty: the abandonment of worldly possessions
Chastity: absainment from sex
Obedience: submission to those above you
Some orders include what is called "the fourth vow". Often being Vow of Service (to do charity work in the community) this is the vow that leads to nuns teaching in Catholic schools. Another well know one is Vow of Silence, which is applicable to the Monks whose job it is to translate old papal documents as if they read something which could be seen as heretical by papal doctrine their job is to keep it to themselves
There's technically only one way a person should pray (it's says as such in the Bible) It's called The Lord's Prayer. However lots of people ignore lots of parts of the Bible. I doubt this particular order would, but as I've never heard them pray I can't know for certain. The monastery near where I live is Augustinian
There are in fact different "levels" of nun.
*Nun:* a woman who cloisters herself in a convent
*Sister:* a woman who does religious service in the community
(Both of these terms can be used interchangeably, and are done so even by members of these orders, but if we got pedantic technically they're not the same) this means that technically "Sister Act" contains 0 sisters lol
When someone first joins an order to see if they'd like to become a nun/sister they're an *Aspirant*
When an Aspirant has decided the order is what they want but are still requesting to join they become a *Postulant*
When a postulant has been welcomed into the order they become a *Novice* which lasts for around 2 years
Then they take *First vows,* sometimes called "simple vows". They can still leave the order at this stage if they so choose.
And finally when the person devotes themself to the order they take *Final Vows* sometimes called "Solemn Profession* and at this point you have stated the role as your lifelong profession. If you leave the order any transgression against your vows is basically a direct ticket to Hell because the vows at this point are basically permanent
The nuns aren't doing yardwork. They're literally growing the food they eat. They also make the clothes they wear. This is a part of the Vow of Poverty
Fun fact; the whole story about Robin Hood "stealing from the rich and giving to the poor" comes from the story Robin Hood & the Fat Friar in which a Friar is disobeying his vow of poverty by getting fat off of the alms given to the church to help the poor. Robin Hood never stole anything. He forces the Friar to distribute the charity like he was supposed to be doing in the first place
The story is about keeping your word, not about redistribution of wealth

Not all religious orders have members take a "religious name". It's common to just use your own name. The common use of Mary is to show reverence to the Virgin Mary. Interestingly Mary was always put first until 1920 when a woman chose the name Sister Margaret Mary. It has since been acceptable to put Mary as the second name as well. This is also why many have Maria and Marie as well

The pope is selected by the College of Cardinals (203 cardinals) which hold a Conclave at the Sistine Chappel in the Vatican to vote on who should be elected the next pope. It would be interesting to see your reaction when you find out this movie is based (very loosely) on a true story, about a group of nuns whose choir became famous. The second movie is a slightly better depiction of what happened to them. They also have the actual nuns from that choir, in that movie, Sister Act 2.
Mary, or a variant of it, is the most common girl's name in Catholic culture. When I was a kid, there was one family in my school with six daughters named Maria. They were all known by their middle names.
As it happens, I watched Sister Act 2 this afternoon with one of my roomies. I'm sure that having grown up Catholic, this movie is different for me than it would be for a non-Catholic. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Ashleigh, this movie was so popular becaus of the music, the choir cast actually went on a short tour and playing several cities. Then there was a Sister Act Brodway play revial and then a sequel where they all returned once more. This movie is timeless fun. 🥰🥰👍

And love that we have _Carrie_ where we don't have time for the religious aspect. But in _Sister Act_ we are here for it!! And I do hope we get the sequel! It's also amazing as small the attic looks without everything in it.

I absolutely LOVE this movie! It's so hilariously great! I'm formerly religious, so I understand a lot about how nuns actually work, which allows me to enjoy this movie even more because they made it all really funny and entertaining when none of it really is in real life. Kathy and Whoopi literally make this movie! It would not be the same without them! I think you should definitely watch Sound of Music, since you haven't seen it yet, it's a great movie! Also, this movie has a sequel, if you want to check that out as well! 🙂

You should watch Sling Blade (1996) starring (and directed by) Billy Bob Thornton! It’s a fantastic Oscar winning movie that takes place in the south that no other reactor has covered yet.
I saw it in a theater in Boston and I laughed a couple of beats ahead of the audience on at least one reference because they didn't understand it.
Now for Sister Act 2, glad you watched this it and the second one are some of my guilty pleasure movies.

Yes, there are different "levels" of nuns. The different habit here is a sign she's either a novice or a postulant, someone who hasn't taken final vows yet. As far as being named Mary, in a lot of orders, yes, all the nuns are named Sister Mary Insertnamehere. Granted, they look a little like Dominicans, but I don't think this is meant to be a specific real order. (ETA: They're identified later as Carmelites, which is a new one to me as the only Carmelites I know are the kind who never leave the convent as part of their vows.) Most of them don't even have habits anymore. You could literally be sitting next to a nun and not know it now. As for the rules of poverty, chastity and obedience, nuns usually aren't allowed to own anything, they can't marry, and they have to do what their order tells them. Those are pretty much the same for any order, but some of them have other things too (some are teaching orders, nursing orders, etc.). Also, as far as how the pope is elected? There's no brief way to explain a conclave, but essentially, there's a vote and a cardinal is picked.
Oh, and little thing. Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute. Poor thing has been called that for almost 2000 years. Jesus healed her from what they would have called possession back then, which probably means she was very ill, but there's nowhere in the bible that says she was a prostitute.
Although around here in Nashville, you'll see Nashville Dominicans in full habit. They are a thriving community of teachers, with many postulants and novitiates on their way to taking their final vows. At my parish in Murfreesboro, there are 6 Dominicans teaching at the parish school.
Sisters don't have a "Rumspringa" (the Amish year to decide if they want to stay Amish). They usually don't start their steps to becoming a religious until college-aged, and it is a several step process where they can choose to leave or stay. And, of course, it's not a prison. They can renounce their vows and walk away at any time.
"Do I know who Diana Ross is?" I just shook my head. My favorite Whoopi Goldberg movie is Jumpin' Jack Flash. If you haven't seen it it's definitely worth watching. Mary Wickes who played Sister Mary Lazarus played Miss Cathcart on the Dennis the Menace show from '59-'62 and she pretty much looked the same then as she did in this movie. I watched Dennis the Menace reruns in the 60's and 70's when I was much younger.

I remember Nickelodeon playing Dennis the Menace reruns in the afternoon after school in the early 90s. There was also a cartoon version that lasted for a season or two circa 1992. And of course, there was also the movie where Walter Matthau played Mr. Wilson that seems to be all but forgotten.

Also I grew up with this film and the cd and even though I am Catholic I heard Hail Holy Queen here before in Church so when I heard it in Church I turned to my mom and said "This is from Sister Act".

The one thing I don't like about this film is before the song My God they reinforced the false idea that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute when she never was.
The Person who eventually becomes a Pope starts as a Priest, and the levels above that are Bishop, Cardinal, and then Pope. There mighy be levels in between that I don't know of or remember. The Pope is chosen by a group of Cardinals in the Vatican who are locked in a room away from everyone else and stay there until they reach a unanimous vote which would be signales by white smoke coming from the chimney, but until they reach a unanimous they let out black smoke.
There is a Saint Clarence, just not St Clarence of Concord. St. Clarence of Vienne, France is the patron saint of prisoners.

AFAIK *any* Catholic anywhere can be chosen as the Pope, but as it's the college of Cardinals who choose the next one obviously they choose from one of theirs.
(Wikipedia says "only those who can be ordained a bishop can be elected, which means that any male baptized Catholic is eligible")
