It'd be a dull world if we all believed the same things, Brummiekerr. Good on you for being able to straddle two sides of the divide -- the politics you believe in and the sentiments expressed by Mr Bragg. I don't have any military experience, but songs like Between the Wars, Rumours of War, Thing Again and Sing Their Souls Back Home are extremely emotional experiences just to hear them (and I sing them too, which is sometimes challenging because the content's so evocative). Nice comment.
Thank you so much for posting. RIP Dad six years ago on Sunday. RIP my brother Greg, the self-proclaimed 'Big Nosed Billy Bragg Busker' 14 years and 12 minutes ago.
Yeah, makes me think of my late dad, too, every time I hear this song. (BTW, I love the woman who requests "The Internationale" and Billy replies "Has to be a certain day for that, ma'am." Love it.)
Yeah, five times since 1987 though three of those were in the space of five days in 2012! I got the chance to interview him too last year: overheardproductions dot c o m/2012/11/05/a-punters-perspective-37-billy-bragg-interview/ (text and audio). Sorry about the weird address format but I seem to recall UA-cam gets a bit thingy about putting in url addresses.
I cry every time I hear this after my dad's death 11 years ago. beautiful Billy!
