  • In this video, you'll get a first look at the OMP M4 sent to me by Buddyrc.com for review. I'll also give you a look at three different GPS based recovery modes available on the Spirit G2 FBL: Hard Deck, Position Hold (with Altitude Hold) and Return to Launch.
    This is MY FIRST HELICOPTER with a Spirit G2 FBL and my first attempt utilizing the rescue modes offered by the GeoLink GPS unit. I will continue to test and evaluate while I work out the kinks. Watch the video and see how it performs.

      Thanks. I've been working on my setup this week and will do some additional flight testing over the weekend. I hope to have the EdgeTX and Spirit setup posted in discord soon (within a few weeks). I just want to make sure it's right as it's a little more complex than a basic iKon setup.

    Thank you for the video. I want to add a few comments regarding the Spirit FBL controller. The Spirit GPS module does add functionality and neat possibilities to the helicopter, but beginner to mid-level 3D helicopter pilots are mainly interested in the automatic "hard deck" rescue functionality, where the helicopter will not fall lower than a pilot defined height. The Spirit GT, GTR, and the recently announced W1 FBL controllers feature internal pressure sensors that the unit uses for altimeter. The pilot basically spools up the blades, lifts up to a "safe" height accounting for reasonable head room (I would say no lower than about 30 feet or 10 meters), flip the assigned transmitter switch to set the "hard deck" height and engage this "automatic rescue" function, fly to your hearts desire, and flip the switch back to "normal" before attempting to land.

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  11 місяців тому

      What is the difference between hard deck on GT/GTR with pressure sensor and GT/others with Geo-Link?

    • @johnahamelv
      @johnahamelv 11 місяців тому

      @@RCVideoReviews I do not own a Spirit GeoLink, so I cannot comment from personal experience. I believe Skookum (I don't believe they support RC helicopters anymore) and Maxx (HeliDirect no longer seems to support them) are the only other 2 FBL units specifically designed for 3D RC helicopters that have/had an accompanying GPS unit for added functionality.
      The pressure sensors in the Spirit GT/GTR units are fairly accurate, but they are also limited by the ever-fluctuating atmospheric pressure. These pressure sensors are limited functionally to just altitude. I personally use them mainly to set a 400 foot limit alarm when doing autorotations, and to determine instant altitude readings when someone asks me how high the helicopter is. I recently met a pilot who uses these sensors for 'hard deck" automatic rescue. From what I observed, it worked as intended within limits. During our testing of the hard deck rescue feature on a 700 size 3D helicopter, there were a few occasions when the helicopter seemed to drop below our set altitude before the automatic hard-deck rescue would respond and rescue the helicopter. So, my recommendation for those planning to rely on the pressure sensors alone to "rescue" the helicopter, it may be best to set the height threshold high enough (no lower than about 30 feet, but 50 feet may be even better) to account for any lag in response time.
      Again, I don't own the GPS unit (GeoLink V2), but in general, adding GPS functionality opens the doors to new possibilities. I just don't know if the "juice is worth the squeeze" for adding GPS functionality to strictly acrobatic 3D RC helicopters which are usually flown fairly close to the ground within a relatively close visual line of sight. Assuming a good GPS signal, I imagine the altitude readings from the GPS would be more accurate than altitude readings from pressure sensors, so if automatic hard deck rescue is the number one feature one is after, then the GeoLink GPS module is worthy of consideration. Maybe the Geo-fence feature may gain in popularity, as one should theoretically be able to set a "virtual wall" that the helicopter would not be able to cross. It gets very scary when a pilot loses control of a larger helicopter, and the helicopter crashes onto the pits or personal property like cars and RV's. At a fairly recent event, a very accomplished pilot made a dumb thumb move and the helicopter made its way onto an area where small children were playing earlier in the day. I believe a "virtual wall" Geo-fence would have helped in this circumstance. At the same event, another pilot had a mid-flight mechanical failure with the tail; the tail began pirouetting out of control the helicopter came close to crashing on private property. Since this was a mechanical failure, I don't know to what extent a "virtual wall" Geo-fence would have helped. As the cost of GPS continues to decrease and the Geo-fence feature becomes more readily available, I can envision the AMA insurance requiring Geo-fence for insurance coverage compliance.

      The juice is worth the squeeze if you're still learning to maneuver, and that's where I see the benefit. BF and iNav have said in the past, altitude is more accurate when GPS and Baro are used together. In my case, I envisioned the hard deck preventing impact--even if flying higher (which I tend to do) while learning new things. Then position hold could come into play to freeze everything while I collect myself.

    Can you give us an update about your experience with the Geolink 2 unit?
    I purchased one back in May 2023 and it still does not work properly! Been flying RC Helicopters since 1990.
    The Geolink 2 IMO needs a lot more work and I have told the owner/ developer (He says he will give me a refund if I want one).
    My experience with it is that is doesn't hold position or altitude very well. Just turning the nose 90 degrees and the helicopter will wander one way or the other (20 to 30 feet)!
    The altitude goes up and down like it cannot find the right spot. Even the magnetic compass changes the setting when checking it at different times!
    On two other helicopters a OMP M4-Max, and a Align Trex 500 FBL - I have a Fly Wing H1 with the new M10 U-Blox GPS unit and it works great:)
    No problems with the Spirit 2 unit....that works fine.
    Please gives us an update on your experience with it. Thank you!

    I'd be curious to see a comparison between this system, and Fly Wing's H1 system. The Fly Wing's entire system is $172.00 compared to this which is $360.00. I've seen the H1 in action, and it seems to work flawlessly. Plus the H1 has a setting, to hit a switch to turn the Heli inverted in GPS fully stabilized.

    So, i just got my omp m4 yesterday and the first thing i noticed was the level of quality with the blade grips already being assembled had ZERO SLOP, and the movement was butter smooth!! Same with the tail grips, just crazy level of quality. And the machined parts were next level as well. I got the red version but wishing ida got yellow or orange because that red just doesnt do it for me but im sure the flight will make up for it. So this is very first setup i will be doing myself so im very intimidated but up for the challenge. I have a beast x system that i can use but should i use something different? It doesnt matter because setting the radio up is going to be a great challenge as ive never done before so it doesnt matter what i use as long as it works well. I looked through the manual and its like reading chinese in that i dont understand a lot of it but its time i learned!! WISH ME LUCK!!😁
