I don't think that's too unusual. I spend a lot of time customizing characters when I'm playing a game that has a robust system for it, but I never make one look like myself. I personally find it weirder when people do make the characters like themselves. It's way more fun to sculpt a new character all together. That goes double for the clothing options.
Splatoon straight-up taught me how to be fashionable. Couple years ago when I really got into it I was a real low-effort baggy-pantsed dirty-walking-shoes type of nerd-fashion train wreck whose gender identity was still “I’ll get back to you on that.” Having a virtual canvas to freely try out any style I wanted with no consequences really helped me zero in on the image I wanted to give off. …Which mostly resulted in me realizing I like flannel hoodies and Doc Martens, but hey. It’s valid.

Thank you for talking about Jet Set Radio. Going through tough times and being at the very edge of a life I once described as a never ending storm of pain, this game made me move my head and get into the music. It took me away from a world of horror and sucked me into a world of graffiti gang wars in Tokyo, full of awesome music and rollerskating. Games like these make you realize it's possible to be happy and as a result you start to look for happiness. It was a strange realization seeing individuality as something to proud of and not embarrassed by.
great video. splatoon (and jet set radio even tho i never played it) have such a rare aesthetic. also the fact that all music in splatoon is 'made' by in game bands and artists is a small touch that i absolutely adore
Really interesting topic. I know that both games have their aesthetic roots in the culture of the region, but it was clever that you expanded upon those origins and examined things like social structures and personal expression, even pointing at things like the user artwork in the Splatoon hub lobby. Tying those back to the developers and publishers' intentions was also a great way to build your topic. This was a fascinating video and I'm eager to see what other games you tackle in the future. Keep up the great work, Maria.
Stumbled on this video (and subsequently your channel) recently and I think you've nailed exactly what I love about both of these games. I found JSR a bit clunky to play at times, but I still consider it a massive favourite just because it's so vibrant and charming. And Splatoon is just wonderful all over, and somehow I never made the connection between graffiti and Splatoon's entire central gameplay mechanic despite it being RIGHT THERE, so thank you for pointing it out!
This was a really great video. I’ve never gotten into Splatoon but I loved Jet Set Radio Future on the Xbox so much as a kid. I actually own the original on Steam and I’ve never played it. You’ve inspired me. Btw your voice is really soothing.
Your videos get me so excited about the potential of particular games that I never really considered before. Kind of wish I'd seen them back when I was still active in game development because you always inspire me. ^- ^

Splatoon must be my favorite game I've never played. I love everything about it. Thanks for this video, it was great to listen to. I subscribed and will be waiting for more :D
Great video and analysis. The most recent game I played that I felt amplified this sort of self expression and identity was sunset overdrive - a game clearly inspired by the likes of jet set radio. Nice job and keep up the amazing work 😁.
I did not know Splatoon had this expressive fashion side to it. I might pick up the 3rd game and give it a shot now. This was a wonderfully done video, I appreciated the look and footage of the 2000s environment and culture.

This was super interesting, loved seeing a deeper dive on the underlying movements behind these games. Splatoon's art style grabbed me from the start, and Jet Set Radio's music (along with Sonic Rush) were instant hits with me as well, and I'm not even normally into hip-hop.
i found this through SiIvaGunner's DJ Professor K day and i couldn't be happier also, you couldn't be more right. even just listening to the music from Splatoon and JSR is like being punched in the face by the game's personality and charm
Awesome analysis video!! I really adore the freshness both of these games have. I think The World Ends With You fits with the themes of fashion and self expression pretty well too! The different equipment in TWEWY is made by "different brands" just like in Splatoon, but this game takes it a step further by increasing or decreasing the effects of your equipment based on if that brand is trending in certain parts of the world map! Really fascinating concept.
this is a really good video covering a subject that i really love. really appreciated you bringing in the context of the real life history of japanese hip hop. personally I think the game that best exemplafies these exact themes is the world ends with you. that game is directly built around self expression through street fashion and art, also has an art style heavily influenced by graffiti, and also has a soundtrack full of bangers from a bunch of different genres from pop to rap and hip hop to grunge to even metal. the whole game is basically ine big message saying "go out and make art! wear whatever cool clothes you want no matter what anyone says! make new friends and meet new people, clash and change and leave your mark on society and the people around you!" i absolutely love games with this kind of are and these kinds of themes. the world ends with you, jet set radio, splatoon, and even in some senses the persona games are all fantastic examples of that. once again, fantastic video. you are quickly becoming one of my favorite new channels in this youtube gaming video essay space. really excited to see where you go from here

The admiration of the devs for that particular style is what makes the tacky idea of Nintendo presenting a youth culture aesthetic actually work.
