C&R is normal among "professional" catfish anglers, at least in Europe. We want the fish to get bigger. Catfish as trophies? Kill them? For what? Nowadays there are cameras ;)
Fun fact: sometimes the catfish actually turns around during the release and tries or many catfish have managed to bite the angler's leg. They may not look like it, but catfish can become very aggressive, for example when they are guarding their nest with the eggs. If something gets too close, they will grab it.

Nah that's impossible. They don't live long enough to develop to that size. This catfish is at least 40 years old and the oldest catfish in the world in Mekong river live up to 60 years. Regular catfish only reach 15-20 years old on average.
