It's honestly a joke, I've had the switch for just over a year, and spent £70 so the whole family could play, and recently both the left joy cons started drifting at about the same time - Its infuriating to pay £70 to have them break in only a year!
@@candych1837 i've had mine for two years, luckily. Though at this point I'd suggest buying a wireless pro controller. It's cheaper and people say it doesn't get a drift in like years. That's what I'm doing now at least.

Well I tried copressed air method, I would say it make the drift less effective, but still noticeable.then I bought a contact cleaner for like 7 usd, spray it under the cap, works like a charm. Until it got dusty again since I don't have a case.i honestly think this is my preferred method since I don't wanna mess with my joycon and broke it....
Cronoe Same. Compressed air work sometimes, but contact cleaner did it for me. Some of my joycon started to drift again though, but it took a good while before it started happening again.
@@nowonmetube So I should pour a few drops of rubbing alcohol underneath the stick then? If that's the case then I think that's an even better tip, thank you so much!
My right joycon drifts a lot. I had to get a new pair, it got so bad. I'm looking to getting a replacement joystick for it. I've tried everything, from compressed air to toothbrushes. Nothing works. Calibration doesn't work either. Instead, my stick doesn't want to move half the time I try to calibrate it.
Try getting some contact cleaner dw40 for electronics, comes in a compressed can. There's a rubber skirt that protects the stick and ball, and if you pry that rubber up carefully it reveals a gap in the plastic. Spray some contact cleaner into there. I did that and it worked like a charm.
my left joycon doesn't connects if more than 1 meter away from my console, my right joycon has a stick drift that is almost as bad as yours and its R button working half the time Nintendo really needs to do a revision of the joycons
I just got mine I noticed that problem too, specifically the right, I use the left one every day and nothing happened, but the right won't even go right anymore. I hope I can get it fixed. But tell me if anything you did worked if not I'm sending it in.
My toddler has been getting into playing Mario 64 and Kirby games. Totally just beat the hell out of the left joystick. Not a problem for her just messing around in the worlds....but a huge issue for my husband or I playing anything technical. Crazy-easy for us to replace the joystick using this vid!!! Thank you! I didnt want to buy new joycons! Bought a replacement joystick kit on Amazon. Came with all the tools necessary so I'm glad we need to only buy singular joysticks in the future and then use the tools from the last kit.
Excellent instructions! Got it done just as advertised: in under 30 minutes. I got a kit on Amazon that cost maybe $12, and the controller now feels brand new.
@Gh0ste0 I'll try to be original next time (Even though I probably won't be) Sorry for late reply, I don't get notifications when someone replys to my comment :D
This was extremely helpful, thank you. I bought the recommended affiliate replacement because it came with a tri-tip, which I didn't have. The repair took me 45 minutes, following your video and being very careful to not strip any screws. I only had one hiccup that you didn't address too much; inserting the new Joystick ribbon cable. Easy to get out, hard to jam back in there. Like getting toothpaste back in the tube lmao. It is in, now, but it seems like it should be able to go in further? Anyways, it works. Before calibration it was centered slightly to the left, after calibration all is well.
Great video, though I have a suggestion for future teardown/repair videos: - Still frame zoom shots of the parts you're mentioning. It's still hard to see what parts you're talking about since you're holding the device in your hands. Once again, great video! These teardown/repair videos really help people who aren't necessarily "tech savvy" gain the confidence to do these repairs themselves, saving a decent amount of money as well.
I had this problem for the past couple of weeks and I used that canned electronic contact cleaner. Just lift the little cap and spray just a bit inside the joystick, and let it dry while making circles with the stick. Solved my problem completely.
My left Switch joy-con was drifting badly and I was contemplating buying a new one or getting the pro controller. I checked Amazon and saw a repair kit that was highly rated and inexpensive. I decided to try it and the tutorial QR code pulled up your video. Thank you so much!!!!
Only heifer had drift issues with the left joycon and only with the one that came with the console got the console right away with the first release ones. Replacement for the left joycon with one that came out later never had that issue again

Whilst the circuitry is different here in England, your video helped give me that confidence and some really useful tips to help my joycons awful drifting, (it would think I was pushing my right joycon fully right, not just a small amount) I'm very happy with how it turned out! £40 Well saved! One minor thing, TBH not even a problem but I noticed now when I slide the right joycon in rather then an instant connect, it waits about 3-10 seconds before I can use it, it doesn't affect anything when in use, I was just wandering if u knew what might be the problem? Honestly though I can wait 5 seconds for my joycon to connect it's not a deal breaker in anyway.
Cheery Downylox my joycon does the same but down 😂 just like oh you are walking trough whiterun casually? My joycon: LOOK AT THE FLOOR YA TWAT.. and then i later just end up dieing because it decided to fuck me over by drifting in the middle of a battle

The replacement one I bought has a VERY slight deadzone issue even after calibration but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything yet.. so we will see how it goes. Will see if I feel brave enough to replace the whole shell another day.
I'm glad I found this because I love Super Mario Maker 2, but the Joy-Con drift makes it unplayable. Mario walks left at complete random. Using the buttons does not help because it still happens on it's own. To be fair, there isn't much room to fit the joystick with how little space there is in the joy-cons.
@@ARealmApart Thankfully the video helped, and I am also glad Nintendo does this now. I shouldn't be too hard on them because there isn't much room to fit a joystick with how compact the controllers are.

You are legit my hero. Nintendo wanted me to send the device to them for the repair of the drift defect but I did it all myself (with the help of you, of course!) and now my son won't hate me for taking Animal Crossing away during the Halloween event.
TYSM! This tutorial gave me the confidence to try this repair for myself. I bought an all in one kit on Amazon, the repair went smooth but when I opened a game my character was floating to the right really badly , which is the opposite direction it was drifting in before. After briefly freaking out I updated the controllers and thankfully that fixed the issue completely. Just glad I didn't have to shell out $80 for a new pair.
Thank you sir. I followed all of your steps to great success. The only issue I had was after replacement, the new stick suddenly drifted slightly downward, even after calibration. Updating the controller's firmware fixed it though. Here's hoping things remain stable over the next several weeks.
Watched the video then i replaced my stick in 10 mins thanks alot bro now my FF7 can actually run instead of sloww walking in the opposite direction 🤣🤣
Thank you! Very helpful. My right Joycon started drifting after a few years of use, and this video was a recommended watch before proceeding with the repair.
I ordered the one you linked in the description and they seem to work great. At first I thought the shipped joystick was faulty because it kept inputting downwards, but after calibrating and disconnecting then reconnecting back to the Switch, the problems were gone. Ty very much for making the video.
Yeah, i did fix them in 30 minutes or less. Paid a guy 20$ to install me new aftermarket joysticks. Was the only solution to work for me. They look identical to the original and surely feel like the original, sorry Nintendo, your joysticks just won't do.

I wouldn't mind the drift that much if replacing them wasn't so damn expensive, oof
That's what I'm doing now at least.
just send them to nitendo. at least it works in romania
They don't offer that service in my country or something like that.
I’m getting my joycons back in 2 days, sorry that u don’t have it in ur country it’s pretty cool I just use pro controller while I’m waiting for them to come back
Well I tried copressed air method, I would say it make the drift less effective, but still noticeable.then I bought a contact cleaner for like 7 usd, spray it under the cap, works like a charm.
That's a pretty nice tip actually, I'll see if I can get some contact cleaner then!

@@MrBrockarock hmm I'll try that. And that skirt thing gets on my nerves. Trying to put the air can nozzle under it is a hassle.
my left joycon doesn't connects if more than 1 meter away from my console, my right joycon has a stick drift that is almost as bad as yours and its R button working half the time
Nintendo really needs to do a revision of the joycons

I just got mine I noticed that problem too, specifically the right, I use the left one every day and nothing happened, but the right won't even go right anymore. I hope I can get it fixed. But tell me if anything you did worked if not I'm sending it in.
My toddler has been getting into playing Mario 64 and Kirby games. Totally just beat the hell out of the left joystick.

Great video, though I have a suggestion for future teardown/repair videos:
- Still frame zoom shots of the parts you're mentioning. It's still hard to see what parts you're talking about since you're holding the device in your hands.
Once again, great video! These teardown/repair videos really help people who aren't necessarily "tech savvy" gain the confidence to do these repairs themselves, saving a decent amount of money as well.
Agreed
Everyone on amazon made it seem like this was gonna take about 45 minutes and I just did it in about 5 after watching half of this video. Thanks dude
I had this problem for the past couple of weeks and I used that canned electronic contact cleaner. Just lift the little cap and spray just a bit inside the joystick, and let it dry while making circles with the stick. Solved my problem completely.
Yep. Fixed mine in seconds with some compressed air... lol
I accidentally ripped the cap off and cleaned it in the process, but now the joystick looks ugly because I put it on the wrong way.
Gotta email this video to BeatEmUps, he could have used your tip around 5:15 the other day xD

As of today, Nintendo will fix them for free now, regardless if your warranty is still valid
@@ARealmApart Thankfully the video helped, and I am also glad Nintendo does this now. I shouldn't be too hard on them because there isn't much room to fit a joystick with how compact the controllers are.
