Hi Mel, The trouble with moisture in the air it will condensate on any cold service so even if you had double glazed windows and it solves the problem on the windows. Thats moisture is still in the air and will go to the next cold surfaces, ventilation is the key or circulating air. External screen on the cab windows help not stealthy though, again moisture still in the van. Love the way you ask the question always prompts me to respond. Helps the algorithm I suppose.. love the channel ignore the trolls

Hi Mel....Just to confirm that good quality external blinds that cover the windscreen & cab doors completely stop all condensation forming. Also double glazed windows do help to cut down condensation, but not eradicate it totally. Great channel Mel...always enjoy watching even if my van is'nt a self build.

Hi Mel, We have double glazed plastic windows in the back of our van. They are great. Never once had a sniff of condensation. Just get it on the cab glass windows even with our insulated covers on.

Caravans have double glazing, still get a bit of condensation,,think the best way to stop condensation is run all the pipe work from heating ducts from diesel heater all around your van even into the cab if you can.

Hi Mel. I have fixed computer fans (x2) in front of each of my sliding windows. One side sucks air in, and over on the other window, it blows air out. They use very little power, do a good job of keeping the condensation away overnight in the cold winter and helps get fresh air circulating in summer. Great waffle again!

Thanks a lot Mel. Sorry my quick question wasn’t that quick😉 I knew that I must be missing something. I hadn’t thought of the extra dirt and moisture that I could be bringing into the van, or the ability to get away quickly if I need to. Following your explanation, the bulkhead is definitely going. Thanks again Steve.

Steve: although he mentioned rain, he did not mention the cold - brrr ☃️
If the weather really is freezing you get pretty cold running around the van. Even on a dry day you tend to bring in a lot of dirt so best to have a 'wipe yer feet' mat just inside the side door, slippers to stop walking all the dirt / sand / stones around the van too. Having a quick getaway, for me, being a female, is an absolute must. Best of luck with your build 👍✔💯 🚐

@@joline2730 The cold is another good point that I hadn’t really taken into consideration. Which is crazy really as I’ve spent a lot of time under canvas and even a really hot day can be followed by a cold night. I’m really glad that I asked the question and really appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts. The bulkhead is going and a pair of slippers and a door mat are on the way. Thank you for your good wishes on the build. 😀

I also leave a window open slightly helps with ventilation.

I left the bulkhead in on my T5, just cut a big hole in it , leaving the bit behind the drivers seat intakt, i also left 10cm at the top and bottem and to the side of the passengers seat, took it all down put carpet on both sides, put rubber trim around the cut , screwed it all back in, put a heavy black curtain behind the passenger seat so as to close the hole at nights and yes i do have a passengers seat that swiffels.

We run the maxxair fan at 10% extract air overnight and this really does seem to shift a lot of moist air out of the van and at 10% it's virtually silent. The use of silver screens eliminates condensation on the cab windows, but not helpful for stealth camping, but if you're on someone's drive I'd seriously recommend them. At home years ago we found that the open coal fire kept the house dry, so your wood burner should do the same in your van as it will pull water laiden vapour up through the flue, so if possible use that to warm the van and dry the air. Again, not ideal if stealth camping with smoke coming out of your stove pipe but otherwise its got to be a useful tool to keep the van dry inside. 👋

My roof vent is perm open and when I'm in the van the roof fan is allways on low speed, never a drop of condensation, it does allow some heat loss but it bests the siggy insulation or rust 🤔

I have a Hymer 1996 with double-glazed plastic and get no condensation, however, I get a lot of condensation on the windscreen and doors. I do a lot of parkups so do not use external screens, they just are liable to get ripped off/advertise that someone is inside the van. I use internal screens. I prefer to Karcher / kitchen towel the condensation as it gets the water out of the van.

I don’t really know why but I don’t suffer with condensation even on the coldest of mornings. When I did my build I left that round fan thingy bob (think that’s the technical name of it) and wonder along with leaving one front window cracked open a bit perhaps it is this. It doesn’t give a noticeable draft either.

  • @alanhanley9515

I have 'plastic' double glazed windows in my van for all the habitation windows but clearly not the windscreen.
They are completely condensation free and I believe because they dont 'create' condensation there is less in the van and hence I have minimal windscreen condensation. Plus that is when the van is cold ie. Unused/occupied, if I'm in in it and running habitation heating there is no condensation anywhere, even overnight when the heating is off or low.
My advice is get them, if you put your hand on them in winter they are almost warm to the touch as opposed to glass, where you feel the cold through them. Even weak sun in winter warms the air trapped in the cavity.
My humble opinion of course, others may have their own view,

    Another great waffle!
Sky lights double glazed are amazing. Love my new dometic ones.
A tip for glass windows - when the windows are just starting to get wet in the evening stick bubble wrap straight on to the glass. The damp means they stick and because they are stuck directly on to the glass no more condensation is able to cumulative over the night.
I have a bosch window vac with a micro - USB charger. Not had it long at all so can't say much. But the bottle is wider meaning can't get to the bottom bit of the front window on my fiat as well. But so far so 👍

They don't ever switch fully on or off though, the more expensive ones like ebers and webastos can if you get the right controller 👍

I think it's the way I want to go but it does seem to restrict the number of available vans i.e. I'd discard those with rear lounges that convert to the bed. If it helps I've done mine as a U shaped seat/bed, with a pull out for the gap and a mattress section for it. When we're using it as a day van it's gives us seats but when we go away we tend to leave it up as a bed as we're too lazy to put away the sheet and duvet.

#Waffle on a Wednesday. 2 questions. I want to buy a Huawei mobile router £43. I want to use my sim from phone as I already pay for data I don't use, is this possible? without having to buy separate sim. Also, I would like to get a metal detector, can you suggest one that would do as a beginner but also would be good enough that I would not need to upgrade if I decided to keep going with it but not too expensive if ended up not getting used lol. Thanks. Love your videos. Michelle

02.44 Diesel heater. There's an on/off switch and there are thermostats commercially available.
The rest is a wiring problem
Or, as an alternative to interfering with the on off switch that comes with the heater find a way for the thermostat to cut the electricity supply to the heater.
Although it might not come on again when the power is restored
Watch out for carbon monoxide, though

Hi Mel, you've got me all confused about my diesel heater controller. I always thought mine was thermostatically controlled, I can certainly feel it cease outputting heat when it gets to temperature and come back on if I raise the temp. Goes in line with this video too, but are we both misunderstanding it? ua-cam.com/video/H1AxurF8KiA/v-deo.html In my defence I've rarely used it

What is the output of the power brick that charges the window vac, and is it AC or DC? I'm not sure, but for what I can see from the replacement chargers it 5.5v DC. now I'm not surgesting anything here. But your the sort of bloke who likes an experiment.
