Hankering! I just ran Molok and made a cool tweak to Molok's final lair. I leaned into the mechanical aspect of the adventure and made those platforms giant moving pistons that raised and lowered 15 feet at the start of each round. I also added the following benefits: if they disabled the control room, then the pistons wouldn't move as much. I also made that cube feeding room where the cubes got activated - if they disabled the room, then the acid damage was lessened. Thanks for the great adventure, still going strong!
Great stuff Hankerin! Things I will definitely use from this: the map-less maze D6 generation The mutation stone concept The way you set up running Molok with spells and blink circles with the random teleports. Makes running the boss battle much more enjoyable for every one!!! Keep killing it!
I am totally ripping that 1d6 maze idea! When last we left my PC's, they had decided that in the morning they were to visit, after an unnerving encounter with a corrupted wizard, the site where his old tower once stood before it disappeared a decade ago. The tower gone and a large void left where it once stood, I think they'll find an old backdoor somewhere that leads to the maze! Thanks for the inspiration Hankerin!
I actually used the maze mechanic, for my solo dungeon crawler... but I used a d8 instead to add a couple more extra nasties. But thanks for being the best DnD channel, I have got a lot of inspiration for my one shots or mini campaigns.
I’ve done this before, using the old 2e dmg dungeon generator (you know, before PC personal computers)...I didn’t have the players split up, but if they went north, they ran into a River, if they went south they ran into the boss mob/Minotaur, if they made it west they got out...it works!
I'm just stopping by your latest video to tell you how much I love you, Hank. In the last month I've been rabidly linking your videos in the 5e Facebook group because man, those guys need guidance big time and every time I rewatch the one I link, I remember how much I love you. No homo man, real brother love. I adore what you do and how you deliver it. Never stop being awesome!
Man! If you make that maze mechanic more random (like change the roll that cuts off by rolling one yourself, the DM, after one cutoff happens) and deadly, it is an awesome DCC funnel encounter. Your videos always spring ideas right up. Keep up the good work and get us more index card RPG volumes, man!
Whaat.. no drink? Great show, and awesome series of encounters. I'll be trying this setup out for a new group of players. My favourite part is still the start.. no gear and a slow progression. Survival fantasy!
Good stuff! The mutation stone and the mapless maze are especially cool. I also laughed way too long at the offhand comment about the box being full of dog hair.
Used the PoMolok encounter to start my Underdark campaign, but didn't mention Molok. Instead they were caught by Dark Dwarves led by a Mind Flayer. Fun Chap
Had my family do this. My daughter was the ranger with just a shitty bow and no arrows. After some time, she asked "Are there bones on the floor of the prison?" I answered yes. She immediately said "I want to use the bones like arrows." I know you can't actually use bones as arrows, but the idea was so brilliant and original, that I just gave them to her. Here we are 2 or so months later, and one of her character quirks is that she debones dead creatures to make special arrows out of them. I'm a proud dad.
This video has a classic Drunkens feels that hasn't been seen in a while. ..I was watching it and thought it was an old video that I had missed. Thanks for the great content hank.
Amazing! Thanks for all the good stuff! Is there anyone who has written this adventure out for theatre of the mind play? Would love to get my hands on that!
@@Runehammer1 it sure is! Thanks for all the effort! What I meant was written out like a module so I can have that handy for reference. Do you know if that exists?
I could also make a maze in Excel, and gradually reveal said maze in front of the players. I know some maze generators, and in _Super Smash Bros Brawl_ I made an ice maze. If I can retrieve it, I could share it if people want. Also, I was thinking I can use moon sand and/or Play-Doh to make temporary statues & other doodads.
Hankerin, I absolutely love all your stuff and you have inspired me to go full-3d with mechanical gameplay for my group. I've been putting my own spin on some of your puzzles and they dig the hell out of it! I gotta ask though, what are the dimensions of your play-box? I'm trying to build one 'cause our 1.5x3 ft coffee table isn't quite enough for playin D&D like a big 'ol badass... Keep on doin your thing, dude! Stuff of legend.
build your box 24 x 36, then use a nice big brick of styrene to "float" it over your table...or even 2x4's...another method is to make an even bigger piece of ply for beneath it as a player shelf for sheets, die rolls and the like. Also, if you have dogs liek me, dont use black felt lol.... use something more cotton blend...
Im going to Dm a few players (also noobs) for the first time and I absolutely love this! Great work! How would you let players take long or short rests to regain hp and spells. Would they camp in like a hallway? Sorry for my ignorance. Once again I love the videos, they are super helpful.
Yo Hankerin! As you know I love your stuff. I had one tiny concern about the labyrinth design though, isn't it possible for the players to roll all dead ends and lock themselves into a no win scenario?
mutants are the best. my campaign is based in alchemical chimera mutants running around trying to resurrect a fallen hero gone bad. simple, horrifying, and allows for whatever creative or straight from the book creatures u want on a whim! Thus the Godzilla/King Kong crossover stuff I can work in at any point. 😃
So i started the campaign, first area came out awesome. Took about 2.5 hours to go through, had to beef up the monsters that were in the area so it was more challenging. Overall was awesome, but definitely fucked up when i was trying to run the maze part, that ended up being a flook. Going to have to learn how to do that a little better, awesome shit so far though.
Going to have to agree with that. I was planning on doing it like the video went, but they wanted to keep playing after room 1 so I looked in my notes and realized I only wrote down half of the dice rolls. What kinds of things do you things do you find worth noting while you play. i have a questions regarding the characters leveling through out this arc, i plan to run this starting friday, with the prisoners of molok, but am unsure where to grant the characters some levels
Amazing video man, i'm strugle with a new archy on my campaing, The players have just joined a company of heroes, about to embark on a first mission, simple, they appended they will watch over a building that is an abandoned fort built as a bridge between two cliff finders. In the fort they found an ancient enemy, a druid who abducts children in the region, I am sure they will invade the fortress behind her, but I can not think what they will have to face inside. If they are overcome, this fortress will remain for them. Any tips?
This particular druid is trying to open the door to an ancient dungeon, the door is sealed with ancient and extremely powerful magic. She has made sacrifices of children in front of the door to corrupt and weaken the magic of protection and to enter the dungeon (nobody knows why yet). Then I thought of a kind of prison, this fort would be the retreat of the druid, where she does her research and takes part of her victims. The players are still lvl 2, so I'm kind of confused with what I play against them.BUT MAN...THEY WILL SUFFER AUSHDIAUSHDIAUDHAIUD
Hey Hankerin I made a play box based on measurements taken by me eyeballing your soggy DM proportions (don't be offended - I call it like I see it) as against your play box - I am sorry to report either you are thinner and weedier than I thought or my eyes are a mess! Hard to make this connection about the horse shoe... Most groups I play with will finish this whole segment in about 2 sessions max. Hell my current one we played for 7 hours and finished 2 dungeons about this size in that time.
Cool just wanted to see how you handle players choice if it isn't congruent to the session. Joing the party a little late, but well... I like your encounter style, but balancing seems way off, imho. In one video you said, this was a dungeon for lvl1 characters, underequipped lvl1 on top of that. There's no way even a veteran group of players will make it through there with low level chars. Lvl 4 and above, maybe. Maybe maybe. For example.... The spider generator that spawns this number of creatures each round is simply too much, or you'd have to underpower the spiders, which makes the encounter kinda useless. The GelCube on top of that, pressing the players even more is great, but d.e.a.d.l.y. Even if destroying a cube takes only one round, which is not very realistic assuming each has like 10 HP, they will not even attempt that before the second wave has spawned, realizing what''s going on. That's up to 20 creatures right there in round 2 of the encounter. Even if each of the spiders only does like 1-2 points of damage, they are Toast. Add the confined space, which will easily make spellcasters fail their concentration checks, reduce tactical movement etc. It's a death trap. One I will certainly use in une of my dungeons, but not for low level chars. So do you have a realistic experience with that dungeon ? What's the level of the players you played it with, how did you manag to guide them through ?
Yehp, this room and far worse ones have seen a lot of play. In ICRPG, there is a core difference from a lot of D&d, which is that 'the world is not made for you to destroy it.' so YES there is NO WAY to beat a spider fountain. Your chances of critting a cube to finish it fast enough are tiny! Our sessions have been so crazy fun these past two years, because there is a lot more flight, more diverting, more all around CRAZY to battle these odds.
Came back here 7 years later to tell again how inspiring this video was to me, thx Hankrin!
