Day 8: Journey to Tuktoyaktuk

🇨🇦 Day 8:
The night was alive with the hum of cars cruising by the point, reminding us of our guide’s mention of fishing season. The locals, the Inuit, were on high alert for the Eastern winds-perfect conditions for hunting the majestic Beluga whale. This whale isn’t just a catch; it's a lifeline for the Inuvialuit of the western Canadian Arctic. Their deep knowledge of beluga hunting and food preparation is steeped in tradition and respect.
During the 3 days we spent in Tuktoyaktuk we got the opportunity to witness this process. Today, we joined the community in a vibrant gathering, feasting on white fish, muktuk, pasta salad, and cake. It was also a golden moment for Auntie2Hands to showcase and share the art of inspirational jewelry. Our bag of beads, and other jewelry supplies was put to good use, and we made a wonderful new friend.

Our cultural exploration was as rich as the gifts we received. The grocery store was a treasure trove of surprises, stocked with everything from snowmobiles and fur to craft supplies and chainsaws. We indulged in tortillas, smoked salmon jerky, and a Klondike ice cream sandwich.
We wandered through town, connecting with locals. One kind soul walked us back to our camp, sharing stories of hunting, his passion for carving, and the warmth of this community. The day couldn't have been better-so we capped it off by dipping our toes in the Arctic Ocean, collecting a bottle of its waters and a few beach rocks as keepsakes. The wind blew east, and we watched two whaling boats head out to Hendrickson Island.
The evening was spent in the company of locals, witnessing the meticulous process of beluga harvesting. By the time we hit the hay, we slept deeply, undisturbed by the passing cars. What an adventure!
