I love this song I was 19 when it was in the charts I am now 61 yrs old and still enjoy listening to it it's so strangely hypnotic and I go into a time warp listening to it and the memories come flooding back of those bloody fantastic times I dearly wish I could turn back the clock and go back to those happy and wonderful days
I'm 53 and remember this song like yesterday - along with Norman Bates on TOTP with the guy going crazy on the piano. At the time I had no idea they were pretty accomplished jazz/session musicians with a penchant for electronics - you had to be able to play and serve the song back then no matter how deceptively simple!
They were primarily a funky jazz band in the late 70s and are brilliant musicians. I love their early material. They've just released a 5 CD boxset of their complete history with a 52 page booklet and 22 previously unreleased tracks. Should get mine later this morning 😊👌
I was 8 when this came out in 1981 (50 now!) and it’s still great- weird but great- and this is the first time I have ever seen the group. Now, they ARE weird and I now know why we couldn’t get any plastic bin bags in 1981, as they seem to be wearing them!!
Omg me too!!! I have carried this tune in my head most of my life since it was used on a commercial when I was young, which featured Einstein, I think it was for a power/electric company or something. I never heard it again. After 30 years I found it!! 🙌🏻
My band was using a Simmons kit when the "brain" got stolen from a gig. A couple of days later the thief tried to sell it in the music shop our guitarist worked in. We got it back! Yay! It was worth nearly a grand, thirty years ago, a heck of a lot of money for us lot
I've just come here after watching Bowie sing Heroes at Live Aid. Thomas Dolby was on keyboards and it's stuck in my head since the 80s that this was his song. It turns out that's not the case!
Probaably the best youtube comment ive ever seen is on this page : " but why would anyone ever need to 'watch out' or 'beware' that theres a new equation of deriving energy from mass?" and also another : " i found this tune by humming it i to google' 😂😂✅👌
As a ten year old in the late nineties, I remember finding this record in the attic and now, 25 years later, realise I was playing it at 45rpm not 33rpm lol
I’m fairly sure they did this on TOTP, playing large constructed fictional instruments, and as a result one of the music papers of the day took the piss out of them saying that they’re the only band to go on TOTP and play their instrument cases.
@@DestinationSalad "playing large constructed fictional instruments"...no, actually, the simmons pads were real instruments and went on to be used by many great drummers, Bill Bruford among them.

One of my favourite bands when I was young and the strangest too. 💖

I found this song by humming into Google. What an age we live in!

Me too
Me too! Recall an advert with Einstein. British Gas maybe? I’m sure whoever played Einstein stuck his tongue out too!!!
I'm 64 and I still remember when I first heard this! Wonderful use of trombone
Probably one of the first 'outings' for Dave Simmons 'Simmons' drums.

I can just vaguely remember when this was released way back in '81
I was 3 years old in 1981

80’s Classic 🎶
Dimenticavo i Classix nouveaux!!! Anche loro ospiti nella stessa stagione del programma italiano!

This is an astounding piece of art

Is the only live performance of this on UA-cam? They never appeared on Top of the Pops.
They did Norman Bates on totp

It is energy creating mass.
Because he's threatening to use his knowledge of physics to unleash an atomic attack.
Without Split Enz there'd be no Landscape..
interesting thought....highly competent musicians making it look easy. Split Enz were wonderful and a real journey.
Tune
Is the guitar played by slapping your hand on the top of it?
Yes !

Ah, so one of the guys here was responsible for the now infamous coined term of "EDM". The more you know...
Doesn’t Billy Eilish owe them some royalties?
I don't know about that. but Gotye definitely does.

Thomas Dolby copied this style.
it was an electric era. Many had similar sounds.
quite gay .....
Welcome to the 80's
it was the 80's all the band were pretending to be gay
Ian Radford not really, just 1981 being 1981.
Gasparuccio X not really, just back then nobody gave a shit about how they were perceived.
They were New Romantics.
