  • I decided to build a furnace that could handle forging, smelting of low temp metals and glass blowing. That's the reason the forge is so large. If you're building something like a small knife forge you could build yours considerably smaller for a lot cheaper.

Propane is heavier than air. It is more likely to burn down your shop than acetylene, which is lighter than air and finds its way outside when it leaks. Propane settles in low spots waiting for a spark. That can happen year after year without a problem and then one day wham. That's why when you buy propane for your grill it always is in a well ventilated case outside of the store. Not to be an alarmist, but you should check with your homeowners insurance agent to make sure you do not need a rider to cover normal gas grill type propane tanks inside your garage or basement or wherever. It would be a shame if some other cause burned down your house 10 years from now and the discovery of unlisted propane tanks indoors voided your insurance. . . I enamel with glass in a home-built propylene furnace with the tanks kept outside. . . Great information, video, and kids. Thanks for sharing. - www.joel.com

@@apatbond2864 People with glass furnaces often are not blacksmiths. They are crafts people. And often they have acetylene.

@@joelselmeier3669 Nah, most are using propane or, if they can get it, natural gas. I don't know a single gaffer in the southeast USA using Acetylene.

@@joelselmeier3669 I think I understand what you are talking about! You are referring to 'lamp work, which IS done with lighter gasses. But for glassblowing, we use propane. lamp work is the small figurines, beads, pipes, etc that you buy in shops. Glassblowing is the process of making cups, pitchers, vases, etc. Glassblowing needs a LOT more fuel, so cheaper gas like propane is used

The point is to notify your insurance company of whatever gas you might be using or else you policy will be voided if there ever is a fire, and to be aware of the dangers and costs of one gas versus another. That's all.

The best part of the entire video is you and that sweet lil helper of yours. I'm a retired mechanic welder and fabricator. I have had the privilege of a 10 year relationship with a major league bat manufacturing company
in Baton Rouge Louisiana . Fifty percent of their specialty machines I designed built and install in the main
fabrication facility. I'm also the proud husband I in a combined family of 6 children 16 grandchildren & 4 great grandchildren. I wouldn't trade my 50 year career of which I'm still active in at my shop next to my house for any one moment with my family. You keep this relationship active with those lil pups and they'll return the rewards for this relationship ten thousand fold in your golden in your golden years.

The tube in the middle is a "fire tube",that is where the fire from the gas, or propane, goes up and heats the water. For that reason you might call it a "fire tube" boiler. As the fire goes through the tube, hence the name.
When working with boiler materials, like k-wool wear Tyvek suit or something that is disposable and not as porous as clothing material. As I have worked in boilers and cryogenic gas plants, for years. NPT,National Pipe Threads

You can also fill using a flame expanded foam made of 2parts flour, 1 part corn starch, 1 part sugar, 1 part baking soda, and to make it stiff you can add clay slurry but I don't know what to add to make this very strong. Pure silica might work but not sure how to keep oxygen out to prevent it from changing state.

This is a great video, love this idea. I've been looking into making one of hese for years and I was planning on reusing pizza oven components to do so instead of buying the expensive glass furnaces people sell online. I think I may do this in the near future, thanks again.

Ceramic fiber wool such as, Cerawool, Fiberfrax, Kaowool and so forth are not as bad as asbestos. Asbestos has barbs that make it so your body can't pass them through your system, but these and man made vitreous fibers do not have these barbs which makes it easier for your body to pass them on. How ever it is considered a nuisance dust and it has not been around long enough to know just what the health risk may be. I and my coworkers always wear PPE such as respirators and protective clothing such as Tyvek suit, sock hoods and cloves. The fibers will get in to everything and just like fiberglass, it itches like crazy. Also there are ceramic coatings that you can spray on the insulation. this is much easer to use and will incapsulate the fibers and reflect the heat back in to the forge. One more thing, dampen the ceramic blanket with water prior to putting your coating on, the moister will draw some of the coating in to the fibers making it stick better, It gives it some penetration rather that just a top coatting.
To light your fire make a wand, wrap some fire prof cloth (2"X6") around a metal rod, wrap some wire around it to hold it in place at the end of your rod. Cut to desired length say two to three feet long. take a piece of pipe, weld a piece of plate to one end for a base, fill with kerosene, soak the wand in the kerosene and light with a lighter. Insert wand in the forge and pull it out once it is safely running. the more wading you have on the wand the longer it will burn. Once the forge is running you can simply dunk the wand in a pail of WATER. Once the flame is out you can insert it into the kerosene, so it is ready for the next light off.

What you do is the future - keep it on man ! :) After finding your chanel I hit like and sub ! The propane is really easy solution for heating, rocket stove have quite universal fuel variations and its possible to forge steel as well, not glass since there is still some smoke but it would be amazing to see someone making a rocket stove for glass.
Put the mask on next time you will be grinding the paint, kid's wouldn't like to have their father sick.

Add more weight to the base of the tool cart thst should stabilize it more. Use the same amount of weight as the forge or more

Adding weight to the bottom of the cart will stabilize it, but will not make it sturdier. You will either need to add braces or replace it.
