- This is a Raw edit of the Balcairn Trial organised by the Bank's Peninsula Branch for the Vintage Car Club (VCC) of New Zealand.
A variety of vintage and prewar cars were in attendance today with the smaller cars having a distinct advantage of the larger ones, even when the large cars are nothing more than a chassis and running gear.
The video is for the enjoyment of the members and participants so they have see what fun they were having. If any VCC member would like a section of video please let me know in the comment.
I'm not teally sure what I'm watching, but it looks like heaps of fun.
Reliability trials. Obscure British Motorsport….God bless ‘em!❤
RALLY CROSS WITH STYLE !!
Yup, it's motorsport when you focus on fun rather than money😁
Well, if you take up this Sport, as they say "That's mud in your eye".
same lol
I've watched lots of extreme motorbikes and 1500-hp monsters climbing up a wall of sand, but this made me smile more. Thoroughly entertaining and has just the right amount of competition (=not much😁)
GREAT upload🏆
cause those people are rich assholes, these anyone can be apart of
This is probably one of the most exotic motor sports events I've ever seen.
A simple low buck way to enjoy the smell of old cars and steaming mud!
Brings back memories of my late childhood ❤
Hope you guy’s are having
fun. It’s the true spirit of competition.
At one time this wasn’t off roading. It was normal transportation when most “roads” looked like this!
You totally get it!
Yeah, and since every driver weighs at least as much as the car the challenge is serious.
I want one of these cars LOL. I’d just drive it around my neighborhood here in the States. Or take it out on a trailer and use it in place of an ATV
Quiet relaxing and enjoyable...
Just lovely...👍👍👍👍
Great day James , thanks for the excellent video , It's really hard trying to get good footage of everyone and compete. Really appreciate your efforts . I'll find you next year and give you a chance for some in car footage.
It was a fun day. Which machine were you in?
@@Buick29 The Blue Ford with no bonnet
Off-road in 1922 be like:
I'm going to hazard a guess that these trials are a reminisce of the early days of automobiles?
This is why I love you tube. Another half hour educational video
Now this is motorsport!
Great video. Looks like a lot of fun and much more civilized than what we have here in the USA. What sat next to the pilot of the one with no bodywork at 19:10ish? Looked like another engine.
It was another engine, a second coventry climax.
@@Crazeerooster So it had 12hp then?, hilarious, that yellow one looked like it had two shitters out of old caravans for seats, 🤣
Why the rubber is so slick, is that a prerequisite? Also, what is the weight or HP limit for these cars to participate?
Yes , period road tyres only , no locked diffs , no fiddler brakes , front engines rear wheel drive. , no hp limit or weight limit. The light cars do the best.
Thank you for posting this. Forgive my Yank ignorance, but what is the car at 20:20?
I have no idea. It’s very cute. Possibly an English Ford Popular with a custom or “special” body.
Widened Austin 7 chassis , Ford Prefect suspension and a Morris 1000 motor and box.
FLATHEAD POWER BETTER LIVING THROUGH LOW COMPRESSION
Who came first, you or the telescope?
I was born before the telescope was made, but then the Director of NASA was quite a dit older than me. Good commmen
Nossa meu Deus
0:20 10:14 very nice looking cars
Les enfants s’amusent sur un circuit improvisé ! 😁👍😘
Somehow this looks a lot more fund and much more interesting than a modern hillclimb or rallye event.
This is very interesting, all of these vehicles are different. Meanwhile the U.S: - Lets weld car frames and install the same engines with the same gearboxes, fabricate a fake plastic fiber outer shell that looks like Toyota, Chevy, Ford etc and race around in circles 180 mph.
Or lets create classes where all vehicles are the same in the pro mod setup and race in the straight line to see which one wins. Boring as F#ck nothing genuine, the most popular motorsports trends in the U.S. are predominately fake or at least overexaggerated.
Alex , we are Nuts here. Look up Kiwi Jet Sprint boats.
IT SEEM'S A SHAME TO BRUTALIZE THESE WOUNDERFULL OLD VEHICLES BUT ☝️ WHAT A SHIT LOAD OF FUN THIS LOOK'S TO BE
☝️AND I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING OTHER THAN FLATHEAD'S
IN ALL OF THEM
Just give us a shove, it starts like a coin. Words to remember.
Wicked stuff. Some right weird and wonderful machinery here and none the worse for that. Any more?
I’ve never seen this kind of Motorsport before, but it looks like so much fun!
I’d love to drive around that course myself in a beautiful car from the past, dressed in nice traditional hunting clothes and a lovely motorist leather coat from that era!
Preferably from Aero Leather, wearing nice Trickers Country boots!
Oh this would be a lovely event, I’m jealous.
If I could join such a club in Germany I’d instantly would!
Thanks for the comment. Vintage cars are fun. Slow but very involving to drive.
There is a lot of friendship and helping getting each other unstuck , I have to scrub my flying jacket after every event as I always get covered in mud!
This MAY be the most British insanity thing that I have seen :-)))
What good fun for all 😊
Cool
What are the makes or models of these vehicles? Or are they Frankenstein vehicles haha?
18:23 what the hell is that? Two engines? Thought trials cars could only be two wheel drive? Or is he using them both to drive the rear and spreading the weight ? Would love to see a close up of that car
Austin 7 chassis rwd with 2 Coventry climax motors linked together and driving via a toothed belt into the austin7 gearbox. basically a rwd straight 8
I absolutely love this! Basically an autocross in a rugged yet quaint way. I was curious of how many of these still sported the factory body, or a home-made one? Those little ones are are just nimble as all get-out, can't believe how well they actually perform. The rig I liked was that long lumbering six-cylinder, that had to have been a beaut when it left the factory. Anybody happen to know what it is?
I think the 6 cylinder to refer too is a Erskine/Studibaker.
This sport is quite common in the UK and is a very cheap way to have fun, It’s like a car version of motorcycle trials. What. a great selection of mid 20th century British tin. One even looked like a pastiche of a very early Morris Minor !! Everybody was having great fun..
Some of those old cars would be worth a few quid though
@@spannaspinna We build our own , mine owes me around $2500nzd , a really good Austin special goes for around $10000nzd
@@Crazeerooster sweet
SUPER 👌
would any of those cars be for sale..ya know...for cheap?
Hi James , Balcairn 2023 in 2 weeks. I'm taking the Blue Ford special again, Look me up if you want "in car" footage.
Thanks. Yes I’ll be up there again this year.
Good fun had by all. What are requirements of vehicles? HP, drive terrain, etc. Not seen this before
I actually don’t know the rules. You will note they are mainly pre war cars and many had added lightness with body and doors missing. Some are fully road legal and others are ‘specials’ just for the series of events like this.
@James Webb Superleggera! 😂
I've got to ask you, though, where on earth is there such an abundance of parts? If I thought it were so, I'd be tempted to daily drive a better kept example of one of these. Far more interesting to me than a Tesla, or even a late model Toyota.
Must be running pre 1960 running gear, Period road tyres , no fiddler brakes or diff locks , front engined , rear wheel drive, limits on how far back the motor can be moved and driver must be seated in front of the rear axle. 2 classes , Short , less than 90 inch wheelbase and , Long , more than 90 inch.
@@Crazeerooster thank you for this infos. I really appreciate.
Cheers !
Min.22,33 eso era un pontiac. 28 6 cil. 3 bancadas. 😞
Not sure what this might be but…… I approve!
Need some help guys
I know they do this kind of thing here in the UK and used to love watching them on UA-cam
But for the love of me I can't remember what this kind of rally cross is called
Any help would be appreciated !!
Classic Trials
Thank you !
Your all madder than a box of frogs, but I love it.
Does anyone know where I can buy one of these? Maybe two, or three? 😁 I don't know why this was recommended to me but I'm fine with it
Leige and Dellow were Factory built Trials cars , otherwise you will need to build one like we did.
Great to see this from NZ. 25 years of trialling in UK.
Wow. Sometimes the UA-cam algorithm really delivers. I have no idea what this event is or why it’s in my feed but I’m here for it.
Thanks UA-cam algorithm, you’ve done it again.
So if i get that right it's
using vintage cars in a rather abusing way in a competition with rather ridoculously strictand complicated rules, not being alowed to use proper tires or off road cars to do a very slow, underpowered off road race.
Most british thing i saw today...
Looks like the U.K. version of mud bog events we have here in the U.S. - they just don't use giant trucks like us
unfair! first 5-7 cars destroy the "road" so the other have no chanse(
Each of the 6 sections starts from a different number , so everyone gets a chance to start 1 stage in the first 5. Sometimes the first cars help dry the course, and the later cars have the advantage.
Crazy that this guy also made that big ass telescope
What an awesome way to spend a day.
👎
They didn't make mud grips in the '30's when most of these cars were built, Skill is much more important. You should see where a Model T can go! Look up Irishman's Rally for more sillyness.
That's one hell of a hill climb, quite amazing. Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.
what is this there is Bailey any Spectators there also and the ones that are there look pretty bored I think I'd rather watch a tax seminar
HAHA competition for the world's worst mudders
Come and have a go , It is a LOT harder than it looks .
Vous n'avez plus de Land Rover ou de Range pour y mettre vos ancêtres ?!🤣
Yup , most of these cars were built before the Landrover was invented.
Это новый вид извращения, ездить по говнам на старых клячах!? =D
This looks super fun! (Also you're the guy that they named the telescope after!)
22:53 Sound🔥🔥🔥
6 cylinder Pontiac power
11:11 is that a dual engine contraption?
Twin ( pre 1960) Coventry Climax motors
A few years ago I saw video of Cotswold Trial (UK), something very similar to Balcairn but for all classics till 90s even. It is great. I would even buy a 80yo or 90yo car to compete. Unfortunately in my country (PL) there are plenty of off-road rallies, but in reality it looks like swamp crawling in a monsters build from the scratch more than any off-road fun for the people. This is why I love Balcairn Trial. It is awesome.
Most drivers have built and modified their own cars , the Austin 7 running gear is preferred and the rules state , pre 1960 and road tyres. An old wreck can cost as little as $600nzd .
Oh cracky !
Euro Rally 2025 ather WW3 end.
WW4
Smile
Carriages without a real horse prince Phil would have enjoyed it
Who needs massive engines and 4WD to have fun!
Yeah man you get it. Finishing the course is the point, but mix in the added challenge of period correct tyres and an under powers motor and finishing is quite unlikely . A perfect recipe o for fun.
It's New Zealand. Won't these be outlawed soon? No funs allowed.
So the British even go mudding with class..... so is this a spec sport or could a crazy American show up with a hellcat with mud tires.
Hi, in case you didn't know this is all happening in New Zealand. More accurately on a private farm in North Canterbury about 50km north of Christchurch. there are classes based on age and wheelbase. knoblie or mud tyres are not permitted.
Is Clive Miller out there?
Tell him hello for me😎☕
Are these what they called... Cycle cars?
Classic sporting trials cars
Look like Real motorsport! Real for the people who love technology. Not only power . But still i dont know what is this?
The event is called a “Trials” and originated in the UK. There are rules and cars are put into categories based on wheelbase. Period tyres only, so this eliminates knoblie or off road tyres. This is true analogue Motorsport.
What kind of cars are these and what years, it looks like fun.
One of these with dirt bike tires would probably rip through that course
Period road tyres only are allowed.
Hey everyone look the new Ford Raptors are out!!!
A ww2 era army Jeep would be just the ticket
And you have the guy at the end of the finish line acting like oh stop stop now what a bunch of weirdos
First guy through made it to the top and couldn't turn round on the slope, subsequent drivers were stopped at the max points marker where they could back down safely.
Just climb the "hill" Is a Triumph
Hi,what cc are these cars??
The original Austins are 750cc , there is no upper limit , but weight is your enemy
Dangerous slugs,my john deer lawmower could tackle that course.
You would be lucky to get off the start line on Turf tyres , I'm 3 years in and haven't nailed it yet.
What a lot of you do not realise just how much skill is required to complete a set course. Most of the vehicles are custom made. Notice how some can compleat a course and some can’t. Why do you think some can and some can not.
Also Stephen, sometimes the same car has two drivers and one driver is better than the other. I know my old car would see the mud and just sit down and spin is wheels. Too heavy for these events.
In my case , its because I cant help myself making roostertails, I know that less throttle would give me more traction, but where's the fun in that! I also modify my car every year, and every year I improve a little.
I was wondering if those cars are road legal
Why are the British
The Pontiac isn't and the boys with the Model A's didn't make it this year.
I had no idea New Zealand was such a poor country.
Yup , most of us can only afford 7 cars and 1 boat.
@@Crazeerooster all diesal engine I assume? 🤪🖖
@@christophermiller3031 Only the big stuff.
Laguna Seca. Mud Wrestling at 6:00
i love to watch old uk drivers on their old cars having wealthy fun.
Try Poor people in New Zealand in home built cars.
What an idiotic "sport". Going up a muddy slope with narrow road tyres ? What result do you expect ? Ah ok waste of fuel and resources, you did well then..
I’ll let you drive your Tesla and feel smug thinking you’re doing the planet a favour, when real cars that have lasted a literal lifetime are still running.. which is really greener.
It's like match racing , the cars are mostly home built to a set of rules that means some very clever engineering is needed to make them competitive, and driver skill , different drivers in the same car can have vastly different results. I did a whole day of competition on 4 litres of fuel , My Track car ( 1600 cc ) would go through 80 litres in a day of racing . The cars are also recycling , many parts are close to 100 years old.
Some people think golf is retarded sport also
Coming from Canada are these cars legal for road use? Love the size.
According to James' answer to Papa Toms Thoughts, there are some road-legal cars here. The cars being so light, it shouldn't be any problem transporting non-road-legal cars to these great events tho.
This looks like a hoot of a time lolololol
That looks like a lot of fun.
Can't decide if I'm happy or not seeing that beautiful Bugatti in the mud ...lol
I can assure this is not a real Bugatti. I don't know what the motor and chassis is, but when xt to a real type 35, it is much smaller
@@Buick29 thank you !
Great moment of FUN !
Thank You for that 😀
y esta maravilla ? gracias tío YT
It looks kind of fun. But what's the point of driving with old street tires through some mud and everyone being stuck at the same spot?
That, my friend, is the challenge. Off road or knoblies are not permitted in the rules. The small lightweight cars with brave (or stupid) drivers have a clear advantage. There are different classes and they are asked on the wheelbase.
I'm not being rude, but if you're asking questions like that you just don't get it. There having more fun than you've probably every had.
The point is to get stuck somewhere on the course. Some drivers are better than others even if they are in the same car.
What the hell is that🤣
What a difference between Americans and Europeans
We Kiwi's are into every sport going including this! Look up Jet Sprint Boats , that will show you how Nuts we are ( Boats with a roll cage )
Is that a bugatti at 4:40?
Replica , there is a genuine Type 35 in the club though , it does mostly speed events.
@@Crazeerooster thanks for the reply 👍🏽
What a load of crap
15:45 i want this car
It looks like and Austin 7, but someone will definitely know
Homebuilt Austin7 Special , alloy body hand rolled ( look up " English Wheel") , built by Avon Hyde similar to an Austin "Ulster " . Austin made Nippy , Ulster , Brooklands , Swallow , Tophat , Ruby and a few others . Worth looking up Austin7 Rubber Duck , a very famous car here in New Zealand.
Wait ! That's wasn't really a Bugatti, was it ?? 🤪
No it’s not a real Bugatti. There are a couple of real ones in town that still get driven, however this is someone having fun and making their own body.
Àre these a çertain year..? How are they classed
Pre 1960.
Please explain the rules?
I don’t actually know the rules. I do know motorbike off-road tyres are not permitted.
This is the penultimate pinnacle of racing, I also like how it was filed on an old handicamcorder!
Do you know what ‘penultimate’ means?
@@petereastwood7868 Well, maybe he/she/other has another racing category on the very top, being second isn't too bad 😁😁
