The Tulleys Sporting Trial

- Sporting Trials is the ultimate development of a 2-Wheel drive car and is as unique as motorsport can get.
"Why bother with 2-wheel drive when you can have all-wheel drive or even 4-wheel drive?" Well, my friends, that's what makes Sporting Trials so special. It's all about combining momentum and throttle control to conquer the most challenging terrains known to man.
Now, we know what you're thinking. "This sounds easy. Just keep your foot on the gas and go, right?" Wrong. Sporting Trials is not for the faint of heart. You have to be able to read the terrain, adjust your speed, and choose the right line to make it up that hill. And if you think you can just power through the obstacles, think again. This is a sport that rewards finesse over brute force. You have to use every trick in the book to get that car up that hill.
Here are some clips from the event.

This seems to be one of the best motor sports off road, shady contraptions no age limits, vague safety and limiter bashing
It’s a great sport -
Sounds like a recipe for fun
Not shady, very highly developed cars, some now have inboard discs on rear separate rear gearbox, highly tuned engines to go from tickover to 6-8000 revs instantly and not big down.
@@migliaracer1 Lmao highly developed cars:):)
Ger 4 tiny wheels, basic differencial/brakes,Honda 1.6L and plastic body....what stuff you need develop????
Its not HillClimb racing where cars cost 100.000-800.000 Euros for example.
Typical UK thinking but i must say it must be relative cheap too!
Iam curious how much those things cost 15-20K Euros?
Just when you think you've seen it all!! Some people have started putting engines on canoes and driving them through forests! Amazing
This made me laugh way harder than it should have 😂
@@Mike-NP Same LMAO
Now thats funny shit.
@@Mike-NP same. Bravo, Carl turner
You should check out Ford and pig racing then...
Wow this is the most British version of off roading I've seen. Actually surprised that a break for tea and crumpets isn't hardwired into the trial
It is they just didn't show it haha 😂
@@tamylynn4935 hahaha!
I suspect it was stout and pork pies that day.
Ello! I say jolly good offloading
Took the words right out of my gross British tooth filled mouth.
As a Canadian who's never seen nor heard of whatever exactly is going on here, let me just say this is one heck of a delightfully bizarre and British motorsport! From the outside looking in it's like a bunch of farmer's in RWD Caterhams (I do watch Top Gear so I know a Caterham when I see one) with bicycle wheels on the front going wheeling in some other farmers back forest and frankly I AM HERE FOR IT.
Also a Candian and have never seen this. Didn't know what a Caterham was until you just now. so thanks
I think you have guessed exactly how it started.
And then there is the good old lawnmower racing comunity
So friggin goofy and wonderful.
Mate I’m uk and never knew about this
its just so fun to watch! People doing very precise and calculated maneuvering and one second later flooring and yanking the shit out of it
But they knew precisely when to yank the shit out of it!
@@apancher of course! Yin YanK is the key to success. The perfect balance between precision and shit yanking
This truly needed some Benny Hill Yakety Sax music to go along with it
😇
Man, this looks like so much fun. Thanks for showing this motorsport.
Yeah. I bet €100 I can get stuck & crash & drown simultaneously. And catch fire for an extra €25
Ikr I didn't know this was a thing, what do you even call these things? It's like a Caterham slept with a Dirtbike and I would like one...also instead of throttle control it seems to be mostly throttle which I also approve of.
Absolutely amazing! Old timers across the pond like me, in our old straight-axle CJs can't pull this off! Love it!!
Wow I remember this from TV on Saturdays in the sixties. Didn't know it was still going on. My interests lie with hot rods so would not compete but would love to spectate if possible??? If not, why is it not still on TV not everyone gives a toss about bloody football 😠
ditto here albeit 70s and 80s....loved watching it as a kid back then
Footballs where the money is unfortunately ........ Boring.......
I didn't know this event, or these odd caterham-esque little off road builds even existed before seeing this video today.
Absolutely the style I'd expect from the Brits... and I mean that as a compliment!
Looks like lots of fun and still a ballsy undertaking, thrashing these little machines in the dirt. Probably a lot more affordable than the giant rock-bouncers people like to build here in the USA.
The Caterham Seven has its roots on these cars, since Colin Chapman raced trials.
Our oldest competitor is/was, I think 82, so age is no barrier - equally sex is not a barrier, its all about your ability to drive.
Age is only number...i see many times in HillClimb racing drivers with 70+age are faster then younger ones:)
Looks like they can lock up each wheel like a brake on a tractor for each side. That's unique. Never seen that on a car before
It's a common feature on Trials and Autotest cars. It's called a fiddle brake (don't ask me why!)
This really is fascinating to watch, never heard of this before.
Thanks for watching -
In all my 60+years obsession with motorsport in all it's forms, I've often come across Sporting Trials in reports, but never before seen such well filmed coverage. As an ex circuit racer, I doubt that I would have had the patience to give it a go, but it looks like mega fun. It would be interesting to throw some old Dellows or Cannons into the mix, if there are sufficient survivors.
Thanks kind sir - I shot it on the Iphone as the weather was shocking and I didn't want to get my broadcast camera out (what a wuzz) - what was rather nice is that they allowed me to get close to the action -
Reminds me of going out muddin during lunch time when I was in high school. Looks like a great sport.
In my mom's Mercedes 240D
Yeah, walking late into 4th block covered in mud. They ask you why you are late.
"I got stuck".
@@letsdothis9063 Usually deliberately.
Used to see this on the telly back in the 60's on the odd occasion. I seem to remember the name Fack? Maybe dreaming there? Good to see it on YT. Thanks.
British cross cart at its finest, bloody brilliant!!!
This is great. Reminds me of sidecar racing. 😀
Glad you like it!
Gotta love that 'traction control' 👍
8:54 Thats your Wingman right there. Never give up. 100% commitment.
I fondly remember when these events were shown live on BBC on a Satuday afternoon.
They should bring it back me thinks.
👍 by far more intresting then mainstream race series...
Agreed.
Just get a Series I and go greenlaning 🍺
I love how he jumps up and down back and forth side to side in order to get her up that hill. She coughs a little at the top, but don't they all?
Such a gentlemanly way to off-road. I’ve never seen this before, but it looks amazing.
Pretty cool isn't it.
Very cool. Ive heard of trials riding for bike and motorcycles but this is very different! Looks like alot of fun!
Principles are the same. Lightness, agility, maximising grip, big nuts and a screw loose.
A more accessible form of the sport is Production Car Trials. Similar concept with sections marked out but generally held in undulating grassy fields. No trees to hit. You use your daily driver, get the kids to bounce for grip, get covered in mud and have a great day.
Technique ! Technique! That is a crazy sport, got to love it. Have a pint with these guys would be great.
One of the best kept secrets in Motorsport until now
Same fun can be had with your lawn tractor. Ottawa Valley baha (deck removed)
I don't know how I ended up in the room and but I will happily sit and watch
Another one for you Keith - ua-cam.com/video/EG4bm1ifvvk/v-deo.html
Best thing I’ve ever seen! As British as it gets!
Tulley is the most British word I have ever heard and this looks very fun.
What a great all around motor sport event!
0:10 That is hilarious and smart in same time when he start jumping to improve traction and lifting rear car part:)
Relative strange/new motorsport to me when in my county we have brutal truck trials with 8 wheelers, that is fun too.
Museum on the outdoor walking 😉
Take like with best wishes from Saint-Petersburg Russia!)
Some great footage here of some great drivers. Must get down to Tulleys in the JABS soon
You should!
That's awesome. Trial bikes with sidecars attempt similarly slippery courses .
Ural would win..... cause 2wd
Is there a regulation on tire treads, or lack thereof?
Check out their website - I am sure there is.
@@Britclip Road pattern tyres from a small, approved list. Scoring is based on not reaching the top of the hill. If everyone got to the top, how would you choose a winner?
With the newsboy cap and the suicide knob! Fantastic!
Want to see how to make the car looks like a blast
I thought that I had seen most a types of Motorsports. This is a new and unique one for me. What's it called? The jumping up and down to acheive traction struck me in my funny bone. Hilarious & Brilliant!
Your secret made it here to the U.S. and I love it. I now want to make one and test my skills
Looks like a lot of fun for reasonable price
I've never seen this before but after doing bangers/dirt track endurance etc thisnlooks a lot of fun. Do these cars have differential braking? A few seemed to be able to lock 1 wheel while powering the other
Fiddle brake control on lever by the steering wheel to control each rear wheel 👍
@@petetandino9945 cheers for the reply. In the process of looking into these a bit more, definitely looks like a good fun bit of sport
They have a footbrake that does both rear and then two smaller “fiddle” brakes that do one wheel individually the same as toe brakes on a tractor or aircraft
@@highlandrab19 The footbrake only operates on the front wheels.
Grandstand Saturday afternoons had this on for a few years. Great TV. The driver builders could talk the hind legs off a donkey when asked anything about the car.
They still can - good sport mind.
Really funny...Racing...No age limit..skillfull offroad drivers...,would love to be part of it..
Come and have a go.
Love to see Jeremy Clarkson driving and Richard Hammond co pilot.
Any pairing of them would be awesome, but the best would be Hamster driving with May as the copilot. Cut to Jezzers getting hammered with the event organizers....
I don't think I've ever seen something so quintessentially British as this!
Very funny! I've never seen trial like this, amazing!
I've never seen those type of automobiles before. But they look like a lot of fun!
This is one of the most British things I’ve ever seen.
Nice video ROMAN Ostrava Czech republic 👍👏🎥👏👍
Way too much fun being had at 5:47! It's always the quiet ones.
Me parece increíble lo que soporta ese sencillo esquema de dirección, da la impresión de que se va a partir en el primer impacto con un arbol
First time seeing this, so cool!
Whoa!! How have I never seen this! New SUBSCRIBER here! 🤜💥🤛

This is my first time seeing this, but hopefully not my last. Wow that looks fun.
this is refreshing in otomotive world
Simply amazing!
If this was televised I’d watch it
That's what UA-cam is for nowadays.
@@Britclip very valid point
Never thought I'd say this......but, these guys could learn a lot from U.S. southerners!
Looks like so much fun
Man you guys are always having all the fun. Cool 😎
1:52 Is that truly 720° of full steering rotation? Pretty gnarly hahahaha 😂🤘
Looks like a lot of fun!
Idk wtf I just watched, but I like it.
What an objectively bad idea. I love this.
Man, i'd like to learn more about the actual Cars. I saw these Trials before as a Kid but being American i always thought the cars used were Caterhams so i would always search for Caterham offroading lol.
I will suggest that an in-depth video on one of the cars is done
C'est sympa ce truc 👍
Man that looks fun
ça me donne envie de réparer mon karting iame 100 à l'ancienne et faire une préparation de furieux .
Looks fun!
Pretty cool stuff. I do wonder why there are no tires better suited for the task. Is it required to have slick tires?
If you put decent tires on, that whole track become boring easy
@@jonasstahl9826 good point, it definitely makes it more difficult
@@Fenrirsleash Probably also to prevent that you can buy sucess.
Motorsport of everykind is pretty expensive, you need the vehicle, a shop to build and fix them, a trailer to get to the track and a car capable of towing the trailer.
If you have 5 different tires that you can swap out depending on the track you have a huge advantage against the guy that can just barely afford 1 set of tires.
The guy with the most money would always win and the other drivers will lose the fun.
@Jonas Stahl extremely good point!!! Money has always been an issue with unfair competition
@@Fenrirsleash Money destroys every sport like soccer/football in Germany.
One Team had a few good years hired all the good player and wins the Championchip every year since 2013.
A soon a new good player, is there, they buy him. It is ruining the sport, immaging you are a child and the same team is always winning and it will not change, when they are old enough to buy tickets and visit the stadium themself, it will be the same team that is always winning since they where born, pretty boring.
Awesome event!
Looks fantastic! But why not better thread on the tyres? Regulations?
Yes
thought they would have grippier tyres
I think that is not allowed.
Or better differencial too.
Road tyres as knobbly type have too much grip and you end up flipping the car. Diff's have to be free so you can do the turns - its all about the drivers skill not the size of his/her wallet
@@kevinjudd7343 No see, that's where the skillnyou THINK you have comes into play. A driver that actually has skills is not going to flip any of these 3' tall clown cars...
Love this.
Can we start this in here in US please
What are these things, I want one
Awesome sport
0:08 damn i was expecting someone says "samir you're breaking the car" lol
We need this in the USA but use Mazda Miata's with jeep tires.
This is genius!
This feels like the most British way to off-road 😂
That's what I said haha.
These guys are shredding this! This is great! But it's no secret anymore! Lol
That's amazing! Why not tyres with better offroad grip tho? Is it a rule?
Yes. Be too dangerous with knobblies.
Brilliant!
This looks great fun, what sort of cost is it to get into it ?
Try this website, they are very helpful - 750sportingtrials.co.uk/
If you'd asked me what the British version of America off-road redneck culture would look like before seeing this I'd have had no idea. But now I know.
So very very British...
Those are dope!
That tire is impressive.
Got to wait for a big rain!
Nice
think I should finally build the trigger and build a double brake pedal car, just like a tractor or a Pépine aka backhoe excavator, just makes so much more sense, more shenanigans and control
Is it possible to mount winter tires on back wheels? Because summer ones sliding like skies :D
Road pattern tyres from a small, approved list. Scoring is based on not reaching the top of the hill. If everyone got to the top, how would you choose a winner?
this is awesome this would be perfect for the northeast would need to change the engine rules though i can see a nice old lightweight snowmobile engine rippin in one of those lol
2mins in and I feel we need this stateside
First shot I would have thought - glad you liked it.
So cool
What are the restrictions on tires it looks like they all have regular street tires on the rear?

You know it's a serious sport when the people who aren't driving are also wearing helmets.
Brits: “Let’s make an off-road driving sport using tiny little British roadsters”! Great idea, we can put big tall suspension on it so it has lots of ground clearance. “Nope, we’re just gonna leave it at stock height!” Oh ok, well then let’s put some off-road tires on it so that it will have lots of traction. “Nope, we’re just gonna leave the shite street tires on it”. Ahh, well at least we can put a torquey motor in it….”ya…no”
Really quite exceptionally Gay If I do say so, myself.
