Hi Alex! If you’re looking for another breakfast item that might suit your lifestyle, why not look to Morocco? I suggest looking into Msemen! Breakfst tip! In my experience things with potatoes are the ultimate energy bombs in the morning. In this case you have two nice options: 1. Açma: Turkish bagels, but we dont cut open to put tings in it. We fold ingredients such as potatoes or cheese or olives in it before baking.
wow. Dope episode. 👍🏾👍🏾 I don't have bagels and lox as much as I should mostly because the fat and salt content is through the roof. But the flavor is *insanely* good.
Savory breakfasts for the win! Another bagel shop suggestion when you're in town next, Kossar's Bagels & Bialys, not too far from the Williamsburg Bridge if you're on a bike. A bonus is that the original Doughnut Plant is a couple storefronts over.
Black Seed Bagels, Alex!!! I keep telling you this dude. Anyone at Eater would have sent you there if you had asked. At Black Seed, bagels are baked in a wood-fired oven. There is a Black Seed right across 1st Avenue from Momofuku Noodle Bar. So you can go to the New York shrine to ramen and then pick up one of the best bagels in New York!!!
i worked in a bakery for a couple years and could take home anything I wanted at the end of the day. I quickly got tired of cinnamon rolls and muffins and other pastries. I never got tired of bagels. I ate leftover bagels for breakfast 4-5 days a week for years. Super easy to just grab one heading out the door to class, easy to eat on the go, variety in types of bagels, sweet or savory, toasted or not, plain or with butter or cream cheese or hummus or make a sandwich, I never got bored of them.
Why not croissant sandwiches? Slice a good croissant and fill it with eggs, saugsage, etc.? As with croissants aux amandes, it can even be a good way to use up old or less than perfect croissants.
Alex, there is nothing like the smell of a freshly baked Banitsa accompanied by Ayran in the morning! Also Mekitsa with cows cheese and homemade fruit jam. Greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria! Hope to see you here one day. ;)
Alex Have you tried the sweet variation, which is called Tikvenik (Banitsa with pumpkin, cinnamon and walnuts, with handmade filo) The name comes from Tikva (Pumpkin)
Agreed! I was about to comment this about the cream cheese and lox! Black coffee would be too bitter and acidic but coffee with cream keeps everything in the same ballpark.
Brooklyn bagel & coffee company have the best bagels in NYC. Try either a plain bagel with cream cheese fresh or everything with cream cheese toasted 👌
Alex, my usual breakfast these days is a bowl of porridge made with coconut and almond milk, with a smashed banana and whatever fruit I have. A portion of rhubarb compote, or a handful of blueberries work really well.
Alex. I don't remember reading where Escoffier or Careme or Brillat-Savarin said "Thou shall not eat a savory croissant." I eat them every day with cream cheese or salmon or my favorite, smoked trout with creme fraiche. I like to take left over beef that has been grilled over charcoal, turn it into a paste in a food processor with some seasoning and olive oil and spread it on my croissant. Try it!
Ok Alex, This video was quite an improvement on the last few. Welcome back. Now make traditional bagels from scratch, and learn to make lox. (Please use the correct type of salmon.)
You should do a series about trying different breakfasts from around the world. You could try a full English breakfast, Scottish porridge, Egyptian fool and falafel it would be fun
As Italian I go with Cornetto & Cappuccino. The old fashioned croissant that sometimes we call brioche. We eat cornetto "in purezza" or with everything inside from jams to Nutella , chocolate or maybe with honey. Late in the afternoon is still good sliced in half with some prosciutto in between when we have aperitivo before dinner Italians say that Caterina De Medici brought the recipe in Paris from Florence. Reality is that French bakers elevated the croissant to the level of excellence it is now.
So the Swedish tradition is to have either oatmeal porridge with milk and lingonberry jam (some people put butter on it) or a kind of sour milk with broken up knäckebröd in it. We also combine the sour milk with the more savory breakfast cereal instead of using regular milk. We might also eat open faced sandwiches with cheese or cold cut ham on them.
Hey Alex, my favorite breakfast is a Japanese dish called tamago gohan. crack a raw egg over a fresh hot bed of rice and season with a little soy sauce. stir it up and it's ready to eat! its got a wonderful flavor and is so simple and comforting. Hope you like it and thanks for all your hard work.
I don't know how NYers do it everyday. My stereotype impression is always that they work so hard for what they earn. Rent is high. Food cost is high. Everyone is on the go and already late. People might say Los Angeles/OC has high cost of living. I don't think it even compares to NY. We're so relaxed here on the other end of the coast.
Bagels and Lox's are usually a late breakfast or lunch meal also drink a English tea (cream & sugar) with it......very good study of the bagel...you missed out on a few NYC best bagels shops but understandable since you where not in NYC...WELL DONE overall. NEVER GET A BAGEL FROM ANY PLACE THAT DOES NOT SPECIALIZE IN BAGELS - lesson learned- lol love your channel....i am almost as obsessed about making dishes better - i use spread sheets to compare 10 different recipes - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
The final day...earl grey...perfect breakfast drink! Of course I'm English so...lol. But as someone who likes to experiment with food croissants make a great base for most 'sandwiches: bacon, egg and cheese; cream cheese; butter and jam; peanut butter and honey...and a whole lot lighter! Hugs, Louise
Hey Alex, I am from Stuttgart in the South of Germany. And a thing that is very big here for breakfast is a salty pretzel. Crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside. Spread with butter and honey. That sweet and savory, especially from the Pretzel coating, is phenomenal
"Lox" for salmon is pretty funny (Lax is the scandinavian name) but I think the name has come from the jewish community in this case. Is Lox the usual way to write it?
Just read an article about it being an 8000-year-old word that basically hasn't changed. nautil.us/blog/the-english-word-that-hasnt-changed-in-sound-or-meaning-in-8000-years
Yes, lox is the usual way, but lox refers to the cured version, salmon to the fresh and untreated, as far as i know. The german word is lachs which is pronounced laks/lax.
Guy it also goes better with bagels than the uncured salmon, at least in my opinion. Fresh salmon on sushi is a must but in every other scenario it’s gonna be lox for me.

Savory breakfasts for the win! Another bagel shop suggestion when you're in town next, Kossar's Bagels & Bialys, not too far from the Williamsburg Bridge if you're on a bike. A bonus is that the original Doughnut Plant is a couple storefronts over.
Try bagel with traditional turkish menemen with very fresh tea and black tea with little briwn sugar.
It is my goto favorite breakfast on Sundays
Reading your comment made me hungry 😊
Black Seed Bagels, Alex!!! I keep telling you this dude. Anyone at Eater would have sent you there if you had asked. At Black Seed, bagels are baked in a wood-fired oven. There is a Black Seed right across 1st Avenue from Momofuku Noodle Bar. So you can go to the New York shrine to ramen and then pick up one of the best bagels in New York!!!
My favorite savory breakfast is Huevos Rancheros! 🌶🍳
i worked in a bakery for a couple years and could take home anything I wanted at the end of the day.
I think the possibilities are more limited because a croissant is more fragile.
You can have your French citizenship removed by putting a sausage in a croissant

A french guy eating bagels in NYC... And enjoying it. I salute you. Un grandissime bravo à toi.
I liked your old name. Alex French Guy Cooking. There are PLENTY OF Alexes n UA-cam. U r the only French Guy Cooking on UA-cam bro.
Alex, there is nothing like the smell of a freshly baked Banitsa accompanied by Ayran in the morning! Also Mekitsa with cows cheese and homemade fruit jam.
Greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria!
Hope to see you here one day. ;)
I made Banitsa in the past. Loved it.
Alex Have you tried the sweet variation, which is called Tikvenik (Banitsa with pumpkin, cinnamon and walnuts, with handmade filo)
The name comes from Tikva (Pumpkin)
Hey Alex, my two cents on the coffee+bagel realization is to try a cream cheese bagel with a creamy coffee. It works
Agreed! I was about to comment this about the cream cheese and lox! Black coffee would be too bitter and acidic but coffee with cream keeps everything in the same ballpark.
a latte or cap would also work!
fantastic opening to the video!!! great stuff as always, alex!
Come to Bulgaria and I'll buy you a Banitsa with a nice Boza!
You could try a full English breakfast, Scottish porridge, Egyptian fool and falafel it would be fun
please say you visited the ba test kitchen whilst in NYC that would make a great collab
As Italian I go with Cornetto & Cappuccino. The old fashioned croissant that sometimes we call brioche. We eat cornetto "in purezza" or with everything inside from jams to Nutella , chocolate or maybe with honey. Late in the afternoon is still good sliced in half with some prosciutto in between when we have aperitivo before dinner
Italians say that Caterina De Medici brought the recipe in Paris from Florence.
Reality is that French bakers elevated the croissant to the level of excellence it is now.
Alex do a video on NYC pizza you will fall in love with the very thin crust totally different from the pizza in Paris.
Or Italy. He's only a train ride or short flight from Italy. Then there is the argument over which is 'right' - as if they were the only two styles.

Fait nous une semaine avec des croque monsieur au petit dej' xD ça te changera des croissants mais ça reste typique de la France =)
Super video =)
I'm very glad to see you go for Bagel + Tea because I feel that is the best.
14 bucks for a bagel definitely too much
Welcome to overpriced NYC!
It's the Lox that is always expensive. As long as you stay away from that, bagels are always affordable.
that's salmon for you.
Callie Masters lox bagels MUST be reassuringly expensive. Good lox costs money.
Bagels and Lox's are usually a late breakfast or lunch meal also drink a English tea (cream & sugar) with it......very good study of the bagel...you missed out on a few NYC best bagels shops but understandable since you where not in NYC...WELL DONE overall. NEVER GET A BAGEL FROM ANY PLACE THAT DOES NOT SPECIALIZE IN BAGELS - lesson learned- lol love your channel....i am almost as obsessed about making dishes better - i use spread sheets to compare 10 different recipes - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Jesus Christ $17 for a sandwich and coffee is ridiculously expensive
I mean it's smoked salmon that's why. It's a rare treat
Yeah, I live in New York and lox is usually pretty expensive but the one he got was a bit more expensive than average.
A third of the price would seem expensive...
Jesus Christ, do Americans call everything a sandwich?
mini696 yes
You are an idiot sandwich
I'm falling in love with his accent. 😍😍
In Brookyln, near Prospect Park are actually a few very good bagel bakeries.
fyi, do you know that bagels are actually from Polish origin?
I know Bagel Hole
@@FrenchGuyCooking . Terrace Bagels is also very nice. They have pretty nice home made sauces and creams as well.
"About to go shoot things in Manhattan" Dude... don't say something like that aloud....
I absolutely love this man! Amazing episode, amazing scene, amazing energy, you inspire me!
Oddly, I prefer my bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant.
The german word is lachs which is pronounced laks/lax.
yeah its written lox
@@Scheeringiscaring Sounds delicious, I love the cured kind
Guy it also goes better with bagels than the uncured salmon, at least in my opinion. Fresh salmon on sushi is a must but in every other scenario it’s gonna be lox for me.
