The woman who advised whole wheat bagel is dead wrong. Everythung with scallion or lox spread was the way to go. Next time.

As soon as that woman said "whole wheat bagel" at Absolute I cried a little thinking that was going to be your first experience with a NYC bagel. Thank goodness you got a real NYC plain bagel too! What a difference, right? Glad you enjoyed it!

If you want us to feel immersed, you're doing it right. I can really appreciate the sunny morning and feeling of eating something that fresh in the park in the morning. I've recently moved to Paris, and I always feel good buying a fresh croissant or pain au chocolat from the bakery and walking around the streets while I munch. It's a good warm feeling inside.

  • @Yish-gy7ju
    @Yish-gy7ju 7 років тому +3

Ugh, a whole wheat bagel is not the "American way". Not even close. It is also aeons away from what is considered to be the quintessential New York classics: Everything, Poppy, Plain, Onion, and sometimes Pumpernickel. Strawberry cream cheese is the best if you're going for something sweet. Otherwise, can't beat regular cream cheese / scallion cream cheese / or the classic lox & cream cheese with thinly sliced tomatoes, red onions & capers. Russ & Daughters makes an amazing lox & bagel with the luxe addition of ikura or salmon caviar. (Come early and ask for your bagel toasted as they don't make them in-house although they are delivered fresh daily.)
Those whole grain / bran / multi-grain bagels are only "American" insofar as they cater to the somewhat neurotic diet and health food culture in this country. However, they do have their place. These types of bagels are more popular on the west coast, especially in CA where the weather tends to be warmer and the crowd more health-conscious. A classic "whole grain" bagel option would be a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs or egg whites, spinach, red bell peppers and a light schmear of cream cheese. Or a turkey bagel sandwich. Or simply loaded with fresh avocado and sprinkled with sea salt, lemon pepper and a dash of hot sauce, to be served & consumed *open-faced*.
Well it seems I just got all passionate about bagels there. Having lived on both coasts and grown up in NYC, I actually found it offensive that someone would recommend a whole wheat bagel in New York! Haha.

You don't get better than Everything bagels and chive cream cheese. creamy, salty, crunchy, spongey, with that twist of onion and garlic boosted by the salt. It's one of the east coasts' best power breakfasts.

New Yorkers don't consider cinnamon bagels real bagels. If you want a sweet bagel, just eat a donut. Classic combo would be classic (not whole wheat) everything bagel with lox (smoked salmon) and cream cheese.

    • @acbeaumo

I'm not sure if it exists anymore, but many years ago I remember eating a Fragel in Detroit. A fragel is a bagel that is deep fried and rolled in cinnamon and sugar. It's as ridiculous as it sounds. I definitely recommend getting a donut instead.

I love that you tried it with blueberry cream cheese LOL i don't think i could have kept eating that hahahaha Thank you for your enthusiasm for bagels! Words of wisdom from philosopher Alex:
'Every morning is like a new promise.'
    'Great food deserves great places.'
I'm glad you take time to see the details in the big picture. With our ever busier world constantly getting in the way, it's harder to do that.
For the everything bagel I would have recommended hummus, cucumber and tomato. Sort of a middle eastern vibe. The garlic and seed mix pairs well with savory spread and veggies.
For the plain...hmmm...It's hard to beat plain, toasted with butter but for a little more fill, I would add plain cream cheese and lox.
Like the immersive format. Great video!

I loved the scene where you were walking to the table in Central Park and your shadow, clearly holding your video gear, was visible. It was great! Every now and then the NY Times has an article about the best bagels in NYC. And Serious Eats has this piece, newyork.seriouseats.com/2009/10/serious-eats-finds-new-yorks-best-bagel-1.html In the Montreal vs New York conflict, it seems that New York bagels aren't what they used to be. I suspect Montreal bagels are better than what you can commonly get in NYC today. Better than the classic NYC bagel of the 1950's and 60's? Probably not.

you discovered my Saturday morning ritual for years (and at my favorite time of yr in NYC, too) If it was a lazy morning, bagels were always followed by a stroll over to the Met to check out my favorite wing(s) and a coffee in the Petrie Sculpture Garden overlooking the Park... (but blueberry? non!)

So I am in Amsterdam, with even less of a chance at finding a great bagel than you in Paris. However, I wanted to share my experience just now which was very much influenced by watching these vlogs.
I remembered I had some pre-packaged Albert Heijn bagels and cream cheese in the pantry. Nothing to write home about. But my mouth was already watering from your previous vlog the day before. I made myself a little plate; one half plain toasted bagel (toasted a little extra), some plain cream cheese. I recently ordered from some American shop online, and received a jar of New York Deli Style pickles. They're delicious, perfectly sour and crunchy. I'm in a land of sweet pickles only, an abomination. One pickle on the plate. And a small slice of Merlijn Brie of Chevre, a Belgian goat brie warmed up just enough. I ate everything slowly, one at a time, savoring every bite and it was just so enjoyable. I have had such a hard time eating lately due to depression and this is the first time in a long time I've had a small food experience. It's no New York bagel but I'm still quite pleased to find nice flavors in Amsterdam, sometimes that's difficult.

Here's something fun to try with a good bagel: get some Lao Gan Ma Spicy Chili Crisp.
Add just a little bit of it to a smear of cream cheese on your bagel. You can thank me later.
PS -- I also have a preference for plain bagels. Without sweet stuff in the cream cheese.

I am American and have tried bagels in multiple states. It was completely different when I went to NYC. I didn't understand how New Yorkers found it a faux pas to toast bagels, because the bagels I ate (whether from the grocers or even at a bagel shop) were dense and not all that special. When he described it similar to a baguette, I totally agree. There's a chewy crustiness to the bagels in NYC deli's, but the inside is so airy and light unlike what you get from the grocers or chain bagel shops outside of NYC. Bagels in NYC 10/10 for sure.

So, maybe a dozen or so years ago, I was waiting in line at Russ & Daughters, and the women ahead of me asked for a whole wheat bagel. The fellow behind the counter informed her, "Lady, there's no such thing as a whole wheat bagel. There's just no way to properly develop the gluten. You can get a round piece of whole wheat bread with a hole in it, but it won't be a bagel."
Perhaps he was overstating his case, but I appreciated his frankness.

As a Canadian, I wonder if you've ever tried and compared the similar-yet-very-different Montréal-style bagels? There's apparently a bit of a rivalry between the softer, fluffier New York-style and Montréal's much denser, slightly smaller style (apparently the big difference is that in the latter style, they add honey to the water that the bagels are first boiled in, so you get a browner, crispier crust).
There's a couple places wayyyy out here in Vancouver that do the Montréal bagels, and the big thing you have to get with them is their smoked meat to have as a sandwich. ;) Apparently a couple places actually fly the stuff out allll the way across the country weekly to do their best to do it justice!
Either way, I really do appreciate this format; it's good to remember that sometimes you need to take some time away from the stress, hustle-and-bustle, and focus on the simple things - good food in a great location, and time to reflect for yourself. It was really both relaxing and refreshing to watch - thank you so much!

Plain bagel with butter is a classic! You should try cinnamon raisin with cream cheese and bacon one day

You've got to check out a Montreal some day. They've got amazing bagels, quite different from New York bagels. St Viateur is my favorite. And if course they speak French, but different from Paris French. You'll love it.

Lox, cream cheese, red onion, capers on onion or everything.

A real bagel is boiled and the wood fire baked. That doesn’t look anything like a real bagel. That’s sadness. And blueberry cream cheese? Come on Alex. Run. Run. Run. 😂😂😂😂

Whole wheat bagels aren't classic nor are fruity cream cheese. The best is plain or with some type of seeds like everything, poppy or sesame. They're best with plain cream cheese or you can add lox, onion & tomato.
I've lived in NYC and I'm originally from Montreal. Both have incredible bagels but they are two different animals. Now that you've had NY bagels, Montreal bagels should be on your bucket list! They're that good. Same rules apply: plain or seeded with plain cream cheese or the lox.

Did you choose the blueberry or did someone suggest it for your Everything bagel?? I'm sorry some of your first true NYC bagel was with the wrong pairing of bagel and cream cheese. My first two NYC bagel experience was whole wheat bagel with walnut cream cheese and a garlic bagel with scallion cream cheese. I NEVER even thought about a fresh baked plain bagel with butter!! I'm going to do that next time!

I first saw you a video for you on FoodTube, such a funny and lovable guy. I've just started watching the NYC vlog and I'm obviously gonna go all the way and watch them all. I love how you videotaped the streets of NY and i'm glad that you're a morning person because so am i! I actually felt the greatness and goodness of the fresh early morning in your video as if i were there too. Great work Alex. :)

I am from New York, but Western NY near Canada. Bagels have always been a part of my life. I know your experience is over, I wish I knew beforehand. I would have started you off with the plain bagel, and I find a lot of times to get only 1/2 of serving of cream cheese no matter what the flavor because it can take over the bagel. Sometimes I even mix 1/2 plain with 1/2 flavor to keep it from overwhelming. The everything bagel is something you work up to and I would have had you ordered that as your last one. After many years I went from plain to sesame to pumpernickel, and now cinnamon raisin. I love to put eggs, bacon and cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel in the morning; it keeps me full until lunch or sometimes even later. Lovely video.

You probably just sold more New York bagels than any commercial ever could. You truly will not find better bagels anywhere, at least anywhere else in the U.S. New York City is known for the best bagels. I even worked in a place that sold fresh bagels every morning, but they were nothing like the ones I had in NYC.

I loved sharing your morning in New York with the bagels. When I travel I travel to find the best local food and often have only myself to share the experience with. This was a lovely experience! Merci monsieur! xx

Fresh seafood boil on the beach with friends. Slow cooked bbq with a beer, maybe tamales with enchiladas, or Chicago hotdog or pizza. If you could visit every state that would be a fun food feast.

dang i was hoping you romped around town eating different bagels and hotdogs and pizzas. but instead i got a one and half bagels worth of footage and you paired the everything bagel with BLUEBERRY cream cheese. still enjoyed watching it though but i cringe at the combo hahahah

Have you had vegetable cream cheese? It goes well with everything bagels. It's small chunks of carrot and celery blended with the cream cheese. Also, do you know the legend of the everything bagel?

Alex, let me tell you one simple truth. NYC is a great place but its bagels stink. The reason is simple: they use yeast. You have never had a proper bagel until you have been to Montreal. Saint Viateur or Fairmont Bagels will beat NY bagels any day of the week. Go to Montreal and have a proper bagel. All the best mate.

Whole Wheat Everything should have been paired with either veg or Olive cream cheese (definitely nothing sweet, oh not with the garlic & onion on that bagel). One thick slice of Jersey Beefsteak tomato added would make that heaven.
