      True...lol...honestly its no such thing as Fake gold, its real gold its just that they put a thin layer of gold over another metal. The real question should be how to spot SOLID Gold? many gold replicas that shine look just as good as the solid ones. I bought a real Gold Jesus piece the charm and chain cost me too much and later it was stolen....but ..its pointless to purchase upscale-high priced GOLD, because we all know with Jewelry it always ends up broke or stolen anyway.

    The brown look in fake gold is from oxidation. When making fake gold items, they alloy about 1% to maybe 2% gold with brass. This makes the brass look like gold when polished. Over time it will start to have some oxidation.

    I have experience in handling gold. Sometimes without proper testing it can sometimes be difficult to determine if the piece is authentic. There are pieces coming in from Asian and Far East countries that are marked as authentic and they are not. They are very well finished to look real.

      electro plated. These type of chains if you rub them between your hands for about 20 seconds you will get the smell of metal straight away. Its a quick test to see if its EP or not

    • @mikehundredson584
      @mikehundredson584 5 років тому +6

      negronera18 all chains are plated bud. 14k gold even polished doesn't look to yellow that's why they are 18k plated straight from the manufacturer. If you have an old 14k chain you will notice from years of use, contact with skin, and regular ultrasonic cleaning it will look dull that's because the original 18k plate wore off.

    • @negronera18
      @negronera18 5 років тому +10

      solid gold chains aren't plated they are mixed with other alloys depend on what gold they are to get that colour. 18kt yellow gold chain will have 75% gold mixed with copper and a small percentage of nickel/zinc etc or other alloy to gain the strength. The poster above my post was saying that some fake gold eg electro plated gold can smell due to the smell of the copper. The only pure gold that gets plated is white gold which receives rhodium to give it a strong hard coating finish and more resistant to scratches. That is of course if the jeweler has mixed the yellow gold with a higher percentage of nickel to get the silver colour. Some white gold makers mix the yellow gold with silver or even platinum for a stronger whiter finish that won't make their white gold ring turn yellow and require a re dip of rhodium plating very often

    • @mikehundredson584
      @mikehundredson584 5 років тому +8

      negronera18 my family has been in the jewelry business for 50+ years doing wholesale work for other Jewelers and also owning a few retail stores. They hand made everything from hand carving wax molds, casting, pre polish cleaning, setting, cutting, everything to the finish product. I worked summers as a kid shooting wax, casting, and polishing jewelry. The only thing they carried in their store that they didn't make by hand were chains. I've been to Italy to the factory where they make the chains ok you have to realize these are not one single peice of gold but rather links that are soldered together than polished after the polish they are plated. Also why do you say " the only pure gold that's plated is white gold"? Pure gold is .9999 and yellow bud. White gold, especially 14k white gold, is rhodium plated after you polish to look more white it has nothing to do with scratch resistance. Also you would use palladium with a base metal when alloying for white gold.

    • @negronera18
      @negronera18 5 років тому +3

      and im from arezzo which is were the 1st gold company uno aerre comes from, whats your point? 9kt gold is 9kt gold its not plated in 18kt, maybe thats the way your family made gold but ive worked and tested numerous of gold pieces from all around the world and when you acid test new and second gold pieces they only stand against what kt they are made from. If you knew your alloys you would know that rhodium is the most expensive alloy and is what makes the white gold not tarnish due to the hardness, that is why silver tarnishes and white gold doesn't. Just because the gold you have dealt with may have been plated in a higher kt, doesn't mean that every jeweller in the world redips their gold piece in a higher kt piece. 18kt looks brighter for a reason, 9 kt looks less brighter for a reason. Pure gold in my reference refers to solid gold. If every different chain that is made is then redipped in a higher kt as you say then they would all look the same?

    I've found the reason why the fake one is brown and on some occasions silver looking, is because what the base metal is. What I mean by that is, the glazing over the metal. Most plated gold that is fake is over brass or stainless steal. In other cases it's a different metal. The reason why it discoloration is the tarnishing from use

    This is silly. There are easier and less subjective ways to tell if gold is real. First see if it's marked. If its marked 10k, 14k, 18k or 24k you should definitely take a closer look. If it's not marked anywhere it's almost a foregone conclusion that it's fake. Then there's the magnet test. Gold and silver dont react to the magnetic pull and while there are some exceptions most fake jewelry will stick. That was always my first step when someone brought in a large amount of jewelry and it was all mixed together; run the magnet over and hand them back everything that got picked up. The rest I would go over looking for markings, setting aside any obvious fakes. FACT: Being able to recognize real/fake jewelry is something that only comes with experience. There are too many little tells not to mention variations in style and quality of fake (or "costume") jewelry to give anything resembling a comprehensive lesson here, but if you use your magnet, look for the markings and get a second opinion until you're comfortable (any pawn shop will confirm authenticity if ur not above insinuating that your gold is for sale). There's absolutely no rule stating that u have to accept their lowball offer;)

    • @beanboi_13
      @beanboi_13 4 роки тому +1

      Eva Morgan 14k gold can have nickel in it so surely it’s stick to a magnet right? I have a supposed 14k rope chain and it sticks to a magnet. It seems like real gold though, it has a nice color and a good weight. If it sticks it doesn’t automatically mean it’s fake right?

    • @egg5180
      @egg5180 4 роки тому +2

      Brian Ruiz I have a 14 k figaro Nd it doesn't stick. Depends on what's in the chain I guess, but usually the part that connects and disconnects will stick to a magnet bc of the spring in it to close the clip.

      @@beanboi_13 I'm sorry but anything above 10k (which is the lowest amount of gold that a piece of jewelry must contain in order to be of any value) will NEVER stick to a magnet. Neither will silver. I was tought this by a jewelry store owner and have since seen literally dozens of people use the trick when buying jewelry "off market". There's a staggering amount of misinformation here. Go to a pawnshop. They will test ur gold for free.

    i think it's best to buy from legit jewelers, shouldn't be hard to find if you know about buying gold to begin with. learn about grams, penny weights, and pure gold percentages in 10, 14, 18, 24k, etc. learn current price per ounce/gram of the various purities. then you can fight with sellers about scrap price and what your paying over. learn before you buy, not after or you'll overpay for tiny chains and pieces. example, just bought 4.5mm diamond cut 14k rope chain 24 inches $1800, at 31.41 grams total weight or almost 1.2 ounces, or 20.2 pennyweights (market is $1200+per ounce of 14k purity, as 58.3% of the chain is pure 14k, get it?). the extra markup i paid comes from the engineering costs,taxes added, and profit rates of course. use these formulas when u wanna spend any amount of money on gold and don't wanna get ripped off. i think 14k is best balance of strength(mixed intentionally with half metal and less fragile if u wear and are active ) overall price, and color.

    the comparison may not apply depending on what gold you are looking at... japanese gold/philippine gold/italian gold/spanish gold/chinese gold/singapore gold/thai gold/saudi gold will all have different "gold hues"... saudi gold can look "brownish-yellow" at 21K... chinese gold can go "very yellow" in 21-24K.. japanese standard 18K gold looks less yellow and more brown... 14K will look "less yellowish" under the sun because it's not reflecting the gold but the other metals mixed in it.... in most asian/middle east countries 14K is a joke and only used when there's a need to mount a stone for strength... it should be 18K the least and up to 21-22K for high quality jewelry...

    • @mikehundredson584
      @mikehundredson584 5 років тому +2

      jefferson faudan high quality fine jewelry doesn't have to be 22k minimum brother. Have you ever worked on high purity gold with fine jewelry? Fine jewelry is done in 18k gold or .950 platinum but Jewelers prefer to work on 18k gold because platinum is harder to work with if you had to resize a ring or any kind of soldering repair work. I have to say .950 platinum is easier to set pave in but since platinum is so soft the prongs wear out faster and the customer will lose stones. 18k is great to work with and easier to do repairs on. Even with a laser platinum is a bitch if you had to size a ring.

    Also, is the value of gold determined just by the weight or also on the Kts? Does the weight factor apply just to chains, or also to any other type of jewelry? Let's say I have a 14k yellow gold small ladies' ring that has small diamonds and sapphires in it, so if that ring is 14k but doesn't in itself have much weight because its a small ladies' ring (but has some small gemstones in it) can that affect the value of the ring? Thank you very much for your time.

    • @thegardencity92
      @thegardencity92 2 роки тому +1

      Generally no.. the stones are not worth much themselves. The K is the purity of the gold.. so if you have a 10g 14k piece of jewelry (without stones), the value of the chain should be the spot price of gold (about $60/gram) times the purity (which would be 14/24, or .5833) times the weight (10) which is about $350. Nobody wants the tiny gemstones since you can't melt them down and recreate into something else easily, those would have to be removed from the jewelry before weighing

And also, do you think spending a few hundred on AAAA CZ is worth it, due to its longer durability, over a $3-10k iced chain? Honestly dude gold plated over sterling silver is real it's just not solid gold. Sterling silver is real and the gold plating is real. Now if you get stainless steel gold plated than that might be a problem. People that have issues with their vanity would drop $2-5k on a solid gold chain you should only do that if you can afford it. Theres no problem with 925 sterling silver gold plated chains

      gold plated over silver is fine. BUT the CZ has to go. And btw..no shame in sticking to silver jewelry only. It's real. Just cause it's cheaper..don't matter..it's REAL. I would never buy fake diamonds and to be honest..I don't even like diamonds. So I'm perfectly fine with just gold and silver. BUT I used to wear silver only...cause it was cheap and it was...................REAL. Everyone respects silver.

      Freedom 進撃の巨人 gold is categorized by karat. a karat is percentage go pure gold to a cut metal. pure gold (.9999) is 24 karat. so, you devide 100 by 24 and it come out to around 4 percent per karat.
      so, 10 karat has ~%40 gold,
      10 karats x %4 (per karat) =%40.
