In Italy precious items need to have a stamp which tells you how what karat gold or silver, platinum ecc is + a producer stamp released by the local commissioner after a background check. This second stamp tells you exactly who is responsable for the quality of the precious metal. In fact if you see 750 (which stands for 18k) on a gold chain it's usually going to be at least 780 because the producer doesn't want to risk.
Great video! Big thanks to the man in the video I am an English teacher in Taiwan and I think I need to make a similar video to educate my fellow Taiwanese coz they usually learned English in a cheaper but useless way and said I charge too much...... crooks prices VS fair prices battle
Love this video - for years I sold 10k, 14k & 18k gold chain locks all over NYC, Providence and LA for a leading Italian manufacturer of locks, I knew there were a ton of tricks in the trade especially those little stamps, but didn't know about this test kit - it's true that the general public get duped all over the world, tourist buyers are some of the easiest to fool. The guy in this video has clearly had enough of his competitors knowingly fooling customers and giving the industry a bad name. Good for him for saying it out loud!
Secrets... hollow chains, hollow profiles filled by another metal, including stone weight while selling and subtract while buying, thick plating lower carats gold to pass simple test. And for last that is the biggest crime in the business, selling rhodium plated yellow gold as a white gold.
1. Check stamps, they're usually marked if it is plated 2. use a fairly powerful magnet. gold isn't magnetic, so if it sticks at all or there is some magnetic pull some other metal is on the inside 3. scratch really deep on a scratch test to break the plated layer. plating is usually fairly thin 4. if need be use wire cutters or something to snap the jewelry in half and pour a little bit of acid directly on the snap / use a razor to make a deep etch and pour acid directly on the cut This is what we do at work to verify authenticity of anything we take in.
I bought a gold plated silver bracelet in Mexico the stamp .925 should have been a dead giveaway but I didn’t know any better at the time. Knowledge is money
From the very beginning you said something very true! My parents got lied to many years ago trying to get me a first communion gift. They picked a necklace with an angel pendant. My parents already knew they wanted to get me 14k. And the lady who helped them sold them a gold bonded 14k pendant with a 14k solid chain. They didn’t know that until I looked at the markings carefully and then realized that the pendant is in fact gold bonded. Under the sunlight I can see fading areas of the pendant. But the chain never faded. So yes! To many crooks mixing different things and tricking people! Very well said!
It's true thst many, if not most jewellers are crooks. Years ago I brought a solid 18k gold stud earring to the local jeweler and wanted to buy a matching stud. The jeweler said he couldn't tell what size stud it was, he took it in the back room to measure it and returned with 2 identical earrings. When I left, the earrings matched but they seemed different than original pair. They were the same size, but they seemed lighter... but I shrugged it off, thinking I was imagining it. About 6 months later I brought in a pair of 18 k gold hoop earrings to be repaired. Only one was broken, but he instructed me to leave both earrings with him. When I picked them up, something about them seemed different. My husband couldn't tell, they looked some how different to me. Since this was the second time I felt the jewelry was different, we ended up bringing all the earrings to another jeweler for evaluation. We found that my 18k solid stud was now an 14k hollow earring, (as was the new match) and my 18k gold hoop earrings were now 14 k gold filled hoops. He did a great job making copies, but not perfect. I can't even imagine how much he is stealing swapping stones.
So i went to those pawn shop and they tested my gold chain 14k , they only tested it with the 10k and 14k liquid and didn’t disappear and they told me that it was doing an effect and I said but it didn’t disappear the line is still there, and I said put the 18k liquid they didn’t want to, they say my chain it was less than 10k even though it didn’t disappear. They say because it was doing a burning effect. So what can you tell me about this please. Thank you..
I appreciate the knowledge. I took a 14k sold gold Cuban chain that was 24 in had it cut down the 18 and the jeweler swapped out part of my chain. Had the chain for 22yrs never took it off until I went to this jeweler to have it cut.. he Left me with 9 inches of my original chain. And then inches of the swap chain. I haven't the time to go back to that shop , but I'll soon be making a trip there.
Thank you for sharing these tips with us. Just one question though.....other than buying jewellery from a reputable jewellers, is there a way of knowing if gold is genuine before handing your cash over?
I would just bring the kit with me and do it the following way. First you're looking for the piece of jewelry you really want and then give him or her the following deal. If you can do test and the results come in positive, then you make the purchase and the scratch doesn't make any difference. But if you find out that you have been misinformed, then you leave the store immediately because you never do business with those kind of people. They can take it or leave it, some deals are big numbers and just like buying a car. You need to test that thing out.
Please! Please. Be sure to really scratch it on.. plated will pass the 10k 14k test if you don’t go deep enough.. You need to get past the gold plating or filling to get best results!
Aye Trax you’re killing it Man, I just started watching your vids and you’ve given so much knowledge and it’s appreciated. How do you tell somethings gold plated or solid gold without drilling?? The acid only shows that the surfaces ct correct?
I was just here to see if my guitar tuners were gold, but sheesh, I learned a lot from this guy's video. Def buying from him if I ever need Jewelry in the city
If it's real gold it shouldnt... tbh that could be another test, if you scratch it and you see something other than gold then, you guessed it... its fake!
How would you know if it's 14 or 10 if the acid is working on both of them because you said it's 14 karat gold but the 10 carat is also working on the acid as well the the 10K acid so how do you know if it's 14 or 10 if both of the acid is showing up how would you know which one it is if they both show that it's positive
How the acid determines "what" the purity is id in a graduated concentration of the same acid. The stronger the concentration, the higher the gold purity. The pure form of this acid will break down pure gold. Its how the folks who scrap gold can remove gold from the alloy. When the acid is saturated in gold particles, they then add a solution that brings the gold back to solid form, then filter. His example is on a minute scale. The lower concentrated acid solution did nothing to break down the gold scratched onto the stone, so this tell us the necklace is AT LEAST 10k. Same with the second scratch. The necklace is AT LEAST 14k gold. The third test disitigrated the gold, being at a higher concentration of the acid capable of doing this, and failing at 18k gold. Tell us this: not 18k gold (18k/24k, 75% gold), but at least 14k gold 14k / 24k(pure) makes at least 58.3% gold.
I have had jsp acids were the 14k acid dissolves everything and had the understanding thats why you use the gold test needles or gold of known karat and compare the amount of time it takes to dissolve the gold.
What are the secrets of the jewelry business? That’s the real question. Also, what am I supposed to do, walk into stores and start scratching up all their chains? Lol
