It's my understanding that those plastic keepers are to prevent the hinge from springing open and injuring someone when unpacking and initially installing - not there as an alignment guide or helper for adjusting underbite/overbite issues.
If you undo the bands enough, they can slip over the Egg, and the hinges will open. You can not close them without bending them without the dome in there. It's, therefore, a good idea to put the hinge retainers back on. If your bands do open because you haven't used the retainers, you'll need to bolt the dome in with the bands open, a two or three-person job. I therefore prefer to use them.
Best video and explanation I've found for this aggravating problem. I didn't have my spacers, but still managed to eyeball and shift the hinge. Adjusting the back hinge bolts was the game changer for me. Thanks!
Thank you for this video! For several years now I've been dealing with some serious underbite and heat-losing gaps. I've tried so many times to get it adjusted right and could never get it. This process worked perfect. Thank you!
Thank you! I totally could not see how to adjust the hinge until I found your video. I didn't have those handy dandy aligners you've got, but it didn't matter....I just adjusted until the dome sat properly in the bowl. Also, I was changing the gasket anyway, so I took that off first so the gap would be right all the way around. Again, thank you!!
Big thanks for the info. I’d also recommend lubricating the hinges on occasion (WD-40 works great). If they stick from rust, that will pull the lid out of alignment, too.
Thanks for this. I have been dancing with the band tension without adjusting the hinge. I’m going to get those plates. I was using cable ties but they’re not up to the job. Great work!
Thanks for a well produced video. I was about to spend $140 for the new style hinge but this video helped me. I will have to admit that it took me a lot longer than 10 minutes to get it right but no underbite and the upper dome stays up now,
Thank you for this video! There are videos that are completely useless. This one, however did the trick. I only wish I had met plastic template, but I think I've fixed my problem. Now I have to get it heated up and tighten my bolts once more to be sure it doesn't slip.
Help. Would you please measure the distance between your bolt holes on your spacer pieces? Outside to outside, then inside to inside. I can then make mine.
Thank you, I’ve been having problems with my lid making my green egg useless. Only problem I only have 1 plastic bracket . Do you know any where to get a replacement. My green egg dealer is useless. Just wants to sell me a new hinge.
Thanks for sharing this - very helpful! Do you think you can share the measurements of this retainer so I can recreate that thing? I’m having issues finding one in Germany ...
Loosen both bands a little so they can just slide up and down on the base and dome. Raise the bottom band to just under the gasket. Then use a monkey wrench if needed to lever the hinge on the big flat part.
Meat Smoke Fire - thanks. Not ideal but I’ll give it a shot. I realize it’s important to vertically align the hinge bolts you highlighted in the video. I tried calling a couple of dealers regarding the spacers but did not get call backs. I’ll try BGE directly since they are about an hour away in Conyers, I think.
I don't do a lot of pizzas on the Egg, I have Roccbox pizza oven. I probably only adjust my bands once or twice a year, but we are cooking on our Eggs pretty much every day of the week.
Tried 3 times and mine is still off a little. Good thing is I can give the handle a tug after I close and it lines up. Does the new hinge fix the problem? Thanks
I tried your method and still have space in the back of the egg (I have the new hinge system), I get it all lined up, and then when I tighten the acorn nuts last it creates a gap at the back. Do you have any tips?
Bernard you can do it without the white spacers. Just push the dome down at the back, pull up the band and then tighten. I suspect you’ve got the new band system.
How long did this last for you? As soon as I got my egg up to 700+ mine went back to uneven. This was the best fix I had found, but I think I’m just going to buy the new hinge
Meat Smoke Fire when is the last time you got your egg up to 700? It’s so tight the damn bolts are bent and everything else is bent. Would be foolish to keep cranking and crack the egg. I think the egg is rated for 10 foot pounds so. Not sure.
Meat Smoke Fire I saw another video of a gentleman using high temp red adhesive/caulking here it commonly skips down. If that’s a Fox it could save me $150
@@Payton77 I had the same problem when cooking at a high temp (700F for pizza). I tightened the bands until I couldn't any more and it still slipped. I put this down to heat expansion hitting a point where it can slip, the issue doesn't occur at 400F. However, I don't cook pizza that often and it takes all of 3 mins to re-adjust, so I can live with that. My .02c.
Great video. I have same problem. Was wondering where you got the tool that fits on the hinge bolts? I can’t find one anywhere on the internet. Thanks again.

I'll also add that having worked for Big Green Egg, I have adjusted 100's of Eggs.

Well done with this video. Well explained and easy to follow. Will be trying this shortly but imagine it's going to fix my problem. Thank you.
Thanks for a well produced video.

Thank you for this video. This is the best explanation I have found. Now I have to re-adjust my lid properly! Cheers.
Thanks. Understanding theproblem is key! This was the best explanation I've seen. Got it back perfect after wasting hours!
Brilliant. Glad it helped.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Very helpful and appreiciated!
Thanks for posting this very detailed and descriptive video. I will give it a try to fix my same issue from the rear of the Egg.
Thanks for posting this. I'm having this exact issue and you described the fix perfectly!
Great video! Some very useful info here.

brilliant video thank you so much
Why stop the video at the most important part showing the actual technique to get those plastic things aligned?
I’m gonna try that tomorrow! I’m misaligned so bad the lid is hard to open. Thanks!
Excellent! and that is some very clear video!
Thank you. I hope it helps.
Hello Sir. Great vid. Can you order the plastic templates?
Contact your reseller and they may be able to help. If not some strong cable ties will also do the job.
This video helped me out. Thank you!
Thanks! Just what I needed.
Really helpful, do you have any idea where I could find the plastic hinge spacers in the UK?
You can use zip ties instead of the white plastic spacers to contact Alfresco Concepts (Big Green Egg) on info@alfrescoconcepts.co.uk.
Thank you, I’ve been having problems with my lid making my green egg useless. Only problem I only have 1 plastic bracket . Do you know any where to get a replacement. My green egg dealer is useless. Just wants to sell me a new hinge.
Use a cable tie, a heavy duty one. All you trying to achieve is stopping the hinge opening.
Thanks for sharing this - very helpful! Do you think you can share the measurements of this retainer so I can recreate that thing? I’m having issues finding one in Germany ...
You can use cable ties to keep the hinge closed. Sorry for the very slow reply, I'd missed this comment.
After watching the video I still had a problem as I could not get the hinge to move to push the dome into position. Any suggestions?
Loosen both bands a little so they can just slide up and down on the base and dome. Raise the bottom band to just under the gasket. Then use a monkey wrench if needed to lever the hinge on the big flat part.
Perfect explanation. What would you recommend in lieu of the spacer bands? Would zip ties work?
Yes heavy duty zip ties will keep the hinge closed. Otherwise contact Big Green Egg to see if they have the hinge retainers.

Hi, great video! thx, how often do you do yours? i have the new bands and have to adjust every time i do a pizza...
I don't do a lot of pizzas on the Egg, I have Roccbox pizza oven. I probably only adjust my bands once or twice a year, but we are cooking on our Eggs pretty much every day of the week.
Remember you can't overtighten the bolts. They'll break before you break your Egg.
Tried 3 times and mine is still off a little. Good thing is I can give the handle a tug after I close and it lines up. Does the new hinge fix the problem? Thanks
You can still have underbite with the new hinges too. A little underbite doesn’t affect performance.
I tried your method and still have space in the back of the egg (I have the new hinge system), I get it all lined up, and then when I tighten the acorn nuts last it creates a gap at the back. Do you have any tips?
Just loosen the top band and push the lid down at the back. All will be fine.
@@MeatSmokeFire I did that, unfortunately, I still have a gap in the back (it fails the dollar bill test), but no under/overbite.
@@MeatSmokeFire I probably need to get the white spacers in order to do this 100% correct...
Bernard you can do it without the white spacers. Just push the dome down at the back, pull up the band and then tighten. I suspect you’ve got the new band system.
Bernard Gehret I thought I better add the white spacers won’t help with the new style bands.
How long did this last for you?
As soon as I got my egg up to 700+ mine went back to uneven.
This was the best fix I had found, but I think I’m just going to buy the new hinge
You’re obviously not tightening the bottom band enough. If it’s slipping down when it’s hot, it wasn’t tight enough.
Meat Smoke Fire when is the last time you got your egg up to 700?
It’s so tight the damn bolts are bent and everything else is bent.

Give Big Green Egg a call and they should be able to provide them.

If you mean the white retainers, they came with your Egg. If you’ve not got them contact your dealer.
God Save the Queen! And the King! Thanks for the Video! Tally Ho!
