  • Join us today as we fix one of the most common issues on the big green egg... the infamous overbite. The dome of a big green egg is the thing we work the most with and with all that opening, closing, and handling it tends to create what we call a dome overbite. It is a very easy thing to fix and in this video, we will show you all you need to know about fixing a big green egg overbite.
As many of you know, about 8 years ago big green egg changed the way hinges work on the grill and this video is made for those with the old version of the grill. But if you are a proud recent owner of a new big green egg don't worry, we are teaching you that too.

Here's an added tip. If you are like me and have neglected your egg for a while, the part where you push on the hinge and the top slides forward might not do anything. Spray a little WD40 on all of the hinge moveable joints and then use a crescent wrench to attach to the flat bar at the top of your hinge and use it as a lever to push forward. All the added leverage makes it simple. You could use vice grips or channel locks or something else, but those have teeth that may scratch the paint on the hinge, whereas the crescent wrench is smooth and does not scratch.

Love my green egg but I wish they’d sell you the tools you need to change gasket when you buy it. I don’t have a damned 1/2 inch deep socket attachment. Used a wrench. Pain in the ass. And when you loosen bolts to move dome the guide holes on one side match but not on the other side. Don’t think older models were designed for thick gaskets.

I also bought a Thermoworks signals and billows which I am testing as I write this. In one of your videos you mentioned that the egg thermometer could be as much as 20° lower than the grill. In my case it’s 70° lower. I’m going back to your video about how to calibrate the egg thermometer. Thanks for all your videos. Much appreciated! One more thing. My Fogo charcoal arrived today. I have the same issue. I can get it all lines up but the final screws pull it back into being offset after lifting. I took my springs off and hinges and noticed when band is where it should be that my hinge doesn’t line up on the holes. I’m thinking mine is just slightly bent from over the years. I got it a little closer after bending hinge and adjusting bands slightly off but will look into a new hinge/lift. Supposedly some replacement ones are better built than the original that came on it.

Curious, was that a Large or Medium BGE you worked on? Looks like a Medium, but I'm not sure. My Medium has only one spring (came that way already assembled), so I'm wondering if I'm missing a spring somehow. Seems to counter-balance well, but I have some big "underbite"

  • @ericperkins3078

I just got the LetzQ rotisserie kit for my medium egg and was having a little bit of sealing issue so made your adjustments. I also decided to replace the gaskets at the same time which, of course, reduced the clearance for the rotisserie kit. Is there any way, other than moving the bands around, to temporarily increase the space between the lid and base to accommodate a rotisserie? The hinge adjustments (old hinge, like yours) seem only intended to increase or decrease drag on the hinge.
