I chose the PS1 for one reason: Namco. Air Combat, Tekken, Ridge Racer and Cybersled were my favorite arcade games when I was a kid, so naturally when I saw them available for home I needed to get them.
Final Fantasy VII did it for me. Those were my young and impressionable years and that was my first experience with a game that was a shooter or platformer and I fell in love
My first experience with PlayStation was also a rental from Blockbuster. Resident Evil and Road Rash were the first games I saw but it was Twisted Metal that pushed me to Sony. Twisted Metal wasn't available when I purchased my system from a KB Toys in Fall '96 so I took a chance on Twisted Metal 2 blind hoping it was an improvement. I later got Twisted Metal in the greatest hits version. Also nice was the demo disk that came with the system that let me try out Formula 1, Ridge Racer and Tekken 2.
I had that demo disc! - Ridge Racer Revolution - Crash Bandicoot - NCAA Football GameBreaker - Blast Chamber - 2Xtreme - NHL Faceoff '97 - Tekken 2 - Formula One - Tunnel B1 - King of Fighters '95 It contains the following game videos: - Jet Moto - Twisted Metal 2
As a person that owns a Saturn, yeah you definitely chose the better option. Once the support for Saturn games stopped, that's when I realized I was gettin' left behind on the evolution of games. It was clear a lot of the games (especially Resident Evil & Tomb Raider sequels) I wanted to play were on the PS1, so I knew it was the system I wanted next. I enjoyed the rental days during the weekend playing a lot of PS1 at my cousin's house, until I bought my own when it reached $100. I don't ever regret gettin' the Saturn tho, because it had great exclusives (Astal, Fighters Megamix, NiGHTS, Virtua Cop, Virtual On) that helped shape an awesome childhood. Games I still own to this day and now they're becoming expensive.
@Always Obsolete Definitely Panzer Dragoon Saga, which I actually prefer over Final Fantasy 7. Being more of an active participant in PDS battles, made it more engaging for me. I bought it on ebay about a decade ago for $325, the highest I ever paid for a game. Now it's worth $1148. 😳
As someone who never played jet moto that jungle level made my jaw drop, I can't even imagine the feeling of first seeing that back in the day! Great video!
As a european saturn kid i do not regret choosing saturn. I played resident evil, daytona usa, virtua cop 2, fighters megamix, the lost world jurassic park. Sure, not all the games were there, but that machine was full of magic. Also had a similar incident with resident evil where the battery save wasnt avaiable because my battery died and tried to complete it in 1 sitting but ended up on a load loop on the labs because the disc was dirty.
back in my country the release of the PS was some sort of generational event (which it was) most of us were used to the 16 bits kings of the SNES and the Mega Drive, ignoring everything else. Most chipped their consoles because of the amount of games, it got to a point that every parent stopped calling any gaming console a "Nintendo" but a "Play Station" instead. I am a Sega fanboy but the hype was unreal for the PS. Crash, Resident evil, Twisted Metal, Ridge Racer, and the huge catalog coming in the horizon, there was no longer a console war but a Bloodbath.
I went with the ps1 as well for multiple of reasons. it was cheaper than the Saturn. the exclusives on it were also more interesting. not to mention all the kids in the area were having or getting a ps1 including two of my best friends already got a ps1, made it easier for me to trade games with.
Interesting take. I was the opposite . The ps1\saturn era was when I ignored consoles and became a PC guy. I didn't get a console again until the Dreamcast got super cheap.
I had similar experience. My NEC486 DX2 was showing it's age. It barely ran Duke Nukem 3D. I was a Sega boy and had and eye on Saturn initially. Nintendo was a definite no for me because the console had catered to kids and not a teen like myself then. Before deciding, I've noticed the shelves at Blockbusters had very few Saturn games and had more PS1. This kinda helped me choose. But what ultimate did me in was back around Thanksgiving 1996, there was a trade in deal at Toys R Us which asked Sega Genesis Console and 10 qualified games would buy me a brand new PS1. Thankfully, Toys R Us was a bicycle ride away so I did it. The trade came with Battle Arena Toshinden. I later traded rest of the Sega games for a memory card. I vividly remember opening up the box. Believe it or not, I still have that very same console and the box to this day lol.
Playstation was my first non Sega system outside of Gameboy. I played Toshinden at Sears and was pretty sold on that alone. I love Sega but I'm so glad I didn't get a Saturn at the time.
N64 was our jam at that time. Nothing compares for local multiplayer. Still, PS1 came out at the perfect time, much like its successor the PS2. Poor Sega never stood a chance, even with their amazing dreamcast… Good video!
I recently got into the PS1 shortly after the beginning of Covid (now over); it took me over 3 1/2 years to buy 100+ games for it. I chose to collect for one of the most successful console platforms of all time. This was 6 months after I bought my Switch.
This generation I was given an N64 when I was aiming to get a Sega Genesis or Sega anything at the time. I just wanted to play MK and had been playing a lot of Ultimate MK 3 on my neighbours Genesis at the time. Anyway, I regret nothing. For a kid N65 was perfect. Still was able to get my Twisted Metal 2 fix with my next door 🚪
I chose both even though I never had Saturn. Only playing TR1 ver. realized that I like it better. It has different rich vivid dark color gamma with nice life like wavy water effect. Plus I heard many prefer re1 Saturn ver better too
I did the same thing! Rent Saturn 1st with VF2, Virtua Cop & Daytona. It was fun but was disappointed with the Daytona port. Then played PS1 at a friends house with Tekken, Wipeout, Destruction Derby, Resident Evil & Twisted Metal! I ended liking the PS1 more! I got my own shortly after with all these games, hoping to save for a Saturn later on but then Tomb Raider 1, 2, FF7, Need for Speed 3, & Gran Turismo 1,2 came along I never got a Saturn. I should have because of all the great games on it many no promos or never came to the US. I missed out but the PS was the right choice for that time.
For me, the choice was between PS1 and the N64. One sample play of Final Fantasy VII (my first ever Final Fantasy game) made my choice for me. Thus was born a lifelong devotion to the PlayStation and all Final Fantasy games.
If for no other reason though Atari Jaguar was cool for its version of Doom. And then you had Doom 64 holy crap. Got to admit though as an owner of the Genesis I'd still like to get a Sega CD just to try eternal champions Sonic CD and shining Force CD
@@alwaysobsolete I'm sorry to say I couldn't afford one then and I most likely couldn't afford one. But I totally agree it would be cool to have. Even buying a Jaguar be cool though they seem way too pricey but to try that Doom game out
In the late 90s there was a saying that PCs were obsolete the moment they shipped. Computer marketers caught on to this and started advertising their machines as "Never Obsolete", like our computers are so powerful they will never become obsolete. I thought I'd do a little play on that.
It just had the best games at the time in terms of quality, quantity, and variety. Whatever you were into, playstation had it.(though I do think Nintendo at it's best during that gen is probably better than either imo, but the small library wouldn't make for a good main/only console) People hype up the japanese only releases and while that does make the Saturn more appealing, you can say the same for the playstation as it to had a ton of japanese only games. Really making that argument a wash at best
The N64 for me, and mostly due to habit- I had played the NES and the SNES, no need to switch gears. And while Mario Party Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie and The Legend of Zelda definitely made it worth the while, seeing the RPG and fighting game genre more or less pass the N64 by did make me move on to Sony in the sixth gen.
It’s pretty obvious why people picked the PS1 over the Sega Saturn and the N64, it was cheaper, it capitalised more on the 3d graphics craze, it wasn’t rushed to market like the Sega Saturn or came out later like the N64, easier to develop for leading to better 3rd party support, a better line up of games, and it was marketed better. Plus it was something new, with a giant like Sony jumping in, accomplishing what Panasonic dreamed of accomplishing with their failed 3DO console. Though today only the Sega Saturn has aged the best with it’s focus on 2d colourful graphics, even the 3d titles like Daytona USA look nice with it’s bright coloured look over the garish grey look of most early 3d titles.
Ridge Racer for me. Tried Daytona USA on Saturn in a shop and it just wasn't as good. Too much pop up compared to Ridge Racer on Playstation from Namco
If it were not for the lack of Japanese titles released in the USA Sega Saturn would be a no-brainer. I liked the arcade ports and fighting games. Japan got some really fun and unique titles that never left Japan unfortunately. A good number of games from both consoles made it to the PC. I was playing Final Fantasy VII, Virtua Fighter, Tomb Raider, and quite a good number of other titles on the first PC I bought with my own money when I was in my 20's. Definitely much more of a Sega fan than a PlayStation fan. It really comes down to the Japanese titles and the 2D titles that have aged much better than those ugly polygons.
Only one of my friends got a Sega Saturn, i felt bad for him, as much like with the 32 X and Sega CD they stopped supporting the console after only a few years. I loved the Mega Drive / Genesis but i saw that coming and jumped ship. It was the same with the dream cast, that was actually a really good console, but nobody trusted them anymore.
I chose the Sega Saturn over the PlayStation but I ended up getting a PlayStation in late 1997. After PlayStation I went back to Sega and got the Dreamcast. I was loyal to Sega all the from the early 90s to the late 90s. I was devastated when Sega Dreamcast decided to close up shop.
I chose the Saturn as a child (for christmas 96 iirc), after having tried both it and the PS1 at friends houses, and am VERY happy with that choice especially considering how it emulates and the prices of those games now (minus Three dirty dwarves and a couple of cheap sports games have a complete PAL collection and a very sizable JP-collection + a few NTSC rpgs). Was also always into arcade (having had my dad get me a famiclone prior as he was too cheap for a NES; incidentally his cheapness turned out for the better for me as I got more games with pirate multicarts; many of which never released in Scandinavia/Europe, and the genres and lack of battery memory turned me into a score-whore) thus never regretted that choice even for a second even though HE (my father) gave me shit for it (as all my friends at the time borrowed PS1 games from eachother. Thing is I still play Saturn today whereas I don't think most of them play PS1). Also the PS1 controllers were SHIT whereas the SAT model 2 is probably still the best 2D-controller of all time; best D-pad for sure being 8-directional. Why in TF you would make your D-pad four separate buttons I'll never understand (looking at Nintendo with the Switch like 🤦♂). That being said a modded PS2 with a proper third party controller, with backwards compability and access to imports, is one of the overall strongest retro consoles of all time imho (got one much later but love it as well). A huge library with LOTS of bangers and exclusives (own the PCB but still gotta wonder if this is the generation when Ibara will finally get a new console port; that one got passed over for the 360 collection for some reason idk).
pick whatever you like its not my place to tell what you should pick. but as usual with the fake take on the Playstation controllers that the D pad having a separate buttons like the switch joycons. I grew up with the ps1 back then, while the d pad at first glance sound like a separate buttons but it's actually not, it's a one piece directional pad that you can't even press all four directions at the same time with. Sony went on with this style on all of their future consoles from ps1 all the way to the ps5 and no one have complaint about it.
@@anasbakhit4303 Well yeah underneath it's perhaps a single "solid" rubber (I haven't opened a PS1 controller in very long) but on the surface area it plays like four separate buttons. With the model 2 Saturn pad you can rotate it so well and press ON something (rather than in between like with Sony or Nintendo). It's just a better D-pad. I have never heard anyone regard the PS1 D-pad as better actually. I play the PS1 on the RG351 now and am happier to do that than on original hardware with the, imho, crap D-pad. The model 1 Saturn controller was trash though to not sound like too much of a fanboy.😛 Those controllers were bigger as well; they felt awful.
@@costumeninja1914 Same man no question (shame there wasn't more third party support and better representation of non-arcade genres). Now PS2 vs DC on the other hand... Had the DC, moving on from the Saturn, and that's a great system too but... Yeah would probably go with the PS2 with backwards compability AND the imports. That library is crazy.
It seems somewhat disingenuous to demonstrate the games you were experiencing at that time in upscaled resolution. Games were mostly 320x240p and the image was fuzzy, really. I didn’t gel with the PS1. I liked Tekken, a bit. Mostly for the music and smooth animation. But in the UK I didn’t know about the Saturn. It didn’t get advertised. Nobody even knew it existed. But I would most likely have bought one had I known about it. It’s history now. But it wasn’t an even competition. I remember seeing footage of Nights into Dreams and being quite amazed but not catching that it was something that was available to play. Honestly, the Saturn library in the first years destroys the PS1. It’s true that Physchnosis games Wipeout and Destruction Derby has way better frame rates on the PS1. But they were a fully owned property of Sony. Maybe they didn’t put their best foot forward for the ports. Look at Doom on Saturn. It runs at 5fps when only recently the 32X got a version of Doom which is a lot better just amateurs made in their free time. I would have played the shit out of the Saturn. But the PS1 for me the best games were Parappa the Rapper and Tekken. But at the time it was underwhelming. PC games were like a generation ahead.
I remember when I was a kid, going strictly by name, wanting the Saturn of the PS. Then I played the original Resident Evil. Also, Ridge Racer. Thankfully I made the right decision.
It seems to have a strong following among retro game enthusiasts these days. I actually tried collecting for it not too long ago but gave it up as the love just wasn't there lol
I know nobody who didnt chip their psx. It was for sure one of the big reason of its success besides the the strong marketing. For me the saturn is still the true winner

Why u no play tekken
Fair point! Tekken 2 did get a fair amount of game time (along with Battle Arena Toshinden)
How did it feel to choose the wrong console? 😉
You made the right choice. The saturn sucks.
It seems to have a strong following among retro game enthusiasts these days. I actually tried collecting for it not too long ago but gave it up as the love just wasn't there lol
It doesn't suck per se, it just doesn't hold a candle to PSX.
I am sorry to say this: The success of the playstation was mainly fueled by the possiblity of copying the games.
Thanks for the input
I played a small part but the majority of PlayStation owners did not chip there system.
And the PlayStations success was due to a number of factors
@@spider-ham7140 Not where I lived. Everybody had their machine chipped.
I know nobody who didnt chip their psx. It was for sure one of the big reason of its success besides the the strong marketing. For me the saturn is still the true winner
Pues te equivocaste. Psx ha sido olvidada. Saturn es eterno.
Comment for the Algorithm
You guys rock! Thanks
Almost everybody I knew chose the PS1 instead of the Saturn... and I'm talking about Sega fanboys.
Saturn was badly advertised in UK and I remember not having a choice I was just bought a PlayStation in march 96 and didn’t even know about the Saturn for some reason and was never asked if I wanted a Saturn 🪐
PS1, Hercules. Looked like the movie at the time.
Certain art styles definitely age better than others too.
I always got whatever consoles friends had. I had no idea which was technically better i always just figured that way we can trade and borrow games
