    Thank you for the thorough review. The information in this video and from numerous other woodworkers whose opinion I value convinced me that the extra expense with the SawStop was worthwhile. I purchased a 3HP PCS with 52" T-Glide fence and the industrial mobile base (with PCS conversion kit). Assembly wasn't difficult and I'm finalizing calibration and dialing in the setup. I'm thrilled with the quality! It was tricky to squeeze another 230V circuit into my shop's load center, but thanks to the existence of the quad tandem circuit breaker, I was able to make it happen. This was a huge purchase for me, but I'm guessing that the pain my bank account is feeling is much less than the pain from a table saw injury. Likely the last table saw I ever buy.

      That's awesome! Make sure you have an extra brake and blade on hand, in case you set off the brake (hopefully only due to contact with metal, not your flesh). Enjoy your new mortgage, I mean saw! 😉

    I have just discovered this excellent web sight and have looked at almost all the videos. I was looking for a beginning wood working web sight since I retired two months ago. I been looking for information for Saw Stop job site saw since I want to keep my fingers. Since I only have 3/4 of a single car garage. I would love and can afford a large saw but with space limitation its a JSS or nothing. You use of a SS JSS was a breathe of fresh air as all the other sites I have visited were large well equipped shops with big boy toys. I have very much enjoyed you videos but feel now that you have gone big time it may not be of the same excitement. I plan on watching you next videos before deciding if you have gone to the way of big boys. As I said in the beginning you web site IS one of the most enjoyable and helpful sites I have found. keep Up the good work for us beginners to learn from.

    Hi Dan, great video as always. Because of your suggestion I bought the 3hp Pro SawStop. It took me 2 days to put together and another week before I was able to cut the first piece of wood. Work got in the play plus I had to run another 240 outlet in my garage. I didn’t get the wheels though. I quickly realized this was a mistake. Very nice video. That helps a lot. It will be awhile before I get this saw, but I think I am convinced this is the saw for me. Your discussion on the fence setup was helpful. My current saw has a fence just doesn't work the way I want. I didn't fully understand the discussion on the blade angle adjustment, but in general I agree with your objective to have a little adjustment past 90 and 45 so that you can truly adjust to 90 and 45. That's a capability I hadn't even considered.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      Thanks! Regarding the 45 and 90 degree tilt adjustment, I know I wasn't very clear. But you got the point, regardless of how unclear I was - you can always back away from the limit, but you can't go past it. What's wrong with your fence? Actually, that's kind of a laughable question - most fences have all sorts of things we wish were different. But still, what's not working the way you want it?

    I've learned a lot from your SawStop videos. I almost bought the jobsite saw, but your videos convinced me to bump up to the contractor saw (36" with cast iron wings). I bought it yesterday at the Rockler in Pasadena. I almost got the PCS, but it's too much of a beast for any workshop I may have in the foreseeable future. If that changes, I'll upgrade.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      Let me say this first, because I don't want to forget: The contractor saw is only 3" shorter than the PCS, and it's 9" deeper. So if size is your only factor, that's something to think about. You can compare them here: www.sawstop.com/cns-pcs-comparison.
      OK, with that out of the way 😄That's awesome! I actually bought my JSS at the Pasadena store. I remember driving around a little because the GPS couldn't seem to find the store. Well, I gotta say, I am REALLY happy for you! And your reason for buying it is the best of all...because you can. I'll probably never be able to afford a brand new saw like this, but moving up from my old Type 1 DeWalt (plastic) contractor saw was one of the best things I've ever done, for my woodworking. Trust me, you're really going to love having a large, flat cast iron table, a nice fence, and you'll also learn to love that 36" rip capacity. I have all the same features in an older ('03 model) different brand saw, and I really like how it ups my game and opened a lot of doors. I loved the video montage and I enjoyed the music, they went well together. Now I see a folding runout table, and maybe even another (wing mounted) router in your future too, lol.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      Thanks, great comment! I can already see that the things you said are definitely true. I've even cut something to 35", so yes, I'm going to enjoy the rip capacity. And for sure it'll open new doors (there's a woodworking joke in there somewhere.). That's one of the reasons I got it, but I didn't want to rub it in my viewers faces - when you've got a quality saw with a solid table and fence, it really does make a difference compared to smaller saws.
      Thanks for mentioning the montage - I really enjoy that kind of thing.
      And most definitely, a folding outfeed table is coming sooner rather than later. It's going to be a lot simpler that what I've seen elsewhere, because honestly, all it has to do is hold the stock so it doesn't fall on the floor. It seems to me that sometimes people over-complicate things. I mean, I do that sometimes too, but a folding outfeed table isn't rocket science. (Ask me again after I make it. 😛)
      And a router in the wing is certainly a possibility. But it'll have to wait with the other "someday" things. 🙄 Thanks again for the comment!

    I bought a 17 inch Grizzly GO513x2BF Bandsaw a couple of months ago, I waxed my new table top with 2 coats of the same Johnson's paste wax and my Ridged 4512 table top. I do this at least once a month, our humidity is very low in West Texas. and I have done this for years on my TS and my Jointer. it has worked great even when I lived in Va Beach, VA. salt air.
    (Former Suffer dude, when we had Air Carriers for surf boards 9' 6")
    I cut some mesquite logs my neighbor gave me from a tree he had just cut down.
    I trimmed the timber to the sizes I wanted, a few of the cut off pieces stayed on the edge of tables on both the band saw and the table saw for just a few hours, not thinking about the moisture in the wood. When I picked up the wood there were rust pits on both tables. I waxed the tables but did not use the Water Displacement formula I hate that stuff (wd-40) however I might try your method with the scotch brite and displace the moister and then as Scott Kaye suggested mineral spirits to get rid of wd-40 and then wax with three coats at a minimum.
    One of the things I enjoy seeing is a Clean machined shinny top on a piece of equipment.
    I really like the safety aspect of the Saw Stop, I guess I need to start a youtube channel.

I've been using it on my motorcycle helmet visor, on my truck, and yes-- my Job Site Saw Stop. Spray on, wipe off. There are other brands, but most are the same concept. Honda motorcycle shops usually sell a Honda branded version that works really well too. Looking forward to your first project on the new saw!

    "You guys bought it for me". I love that! Congrats and I think that's awesome. I bought the exact same saw just last soon. A 36 inch 1.75Hp PCS with T-Glide and wheels. It was weird watching you build it, sort of like deja vu. I purchased a dedicated portable dust collector for it. I also easily get rust, but my saw's not an ornament. But I do clean it in a similar way. I do have a definite, repeatable 0.005" alignment issue to resolve, but not today. I need to adjust my fence the way you did yours. Thanks for making the video.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      Thanks! By the way, that's not much of an alignment issue. If you're talking your blade, I think mine's .004" off, and that's good enough for me. With the fence, it's fine as long as it's toed out.

    • @vulcanville
      @vulcanville 5 років тому

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker The blade is out of parallel with the miter slots by that much, in the direction that it points away from the fence as I cut. I'm finding it hard to keep stock tight against the fence and with key cuts end up reaching over the blade to hold the back of the stock against the fence. I know I shouldn't be doing that. I've also used a feather board behind the blade for a last-pass cut less than a kerf wide. That works too but again, not great technique. I'm blaming this issue on my fence blade alignment but I don't know. I'd be very happy to get some advice here.

      @@vulcanville Well, let's think about this, and remember that I'm not an expert, so I'm just thinking out loud. Do you have a riving knife or use the blade guard? Because if you do, either one of them should keep the stock against the fence. I think you need to check your fence's alignment, because that sounds like the more likely culprit. Let me know what you come up with.

    Congrats on the well deserved "perk" of being a successful UA-camr. I too bought a new saw (not a Sawstop though) and have spent as much time waxing as I have cutting anything. The first 2 projects involved plywood scraps with some grit, so I have plenty of fine scratches already. Awesome. Looks like you picked up the same package that I did a year ago. Thanks for the video. I'm moving in a few months and will have a large (600sqft) shop, so I'm planning on upgrading my SS Worksite to the 3hp 52". The 36" looks plenty, big, though, so I may change my plan. BTW...the EASIEST and most effective rust inhibitor and "teflon" smooth coating I've found is GlideCote. You spray it on, let it dry a minute, then wipe it off. Not streaks, no buffing. Also, I really don't like the idea of using WD40 on any surface that wood will touch. I don't have enough confidence in my ability to get it all off before contaminating a project piece. Thanks again for the great video!!!!

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      Thanks, Paul, and I love learning from you guys. I tried GlideCote but I didn't like it. However, in retrospect, I think I used too much, and let it dry too long. And someone mentioned using mineral spirits to remove the WD-40, which is a great idea, and I may redo everything again and try it out. How often do you reapply the GlideCote, and what do you do to the surface before you use it?

    • @pengel200
      @pengel200 5 років тому

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker I've been seriously dedicated to my woodworking for about two years. Everything I have purchased I've done the clean up of the preservatives and applied the GlideCote. I have not experienced any loss of "teflon-y" behavior, so have not reapplied. But...since I'm still a weekend warrior, and many of my weekends find me doing honey-dos or traveling, I can't say I've done enough heads-down work to properly wear it off, so you will have to rely on others with more active workshops.

      Yeah, I understand about the table saw. We do the best we can with what we've got, though. You could always contact SawStop and see if they'd give you a saw. You could play it up and say "Let's do an experiment and see how much of an impact it would have on a new channel to feature a SawStop front and center." I'm sure I've never seen anyone document something like this - starting with under 1,00 subscribers and then seeing if featuring the saw has an impact or not. Try sending an email to Marketing@sawstop.com. With your visual style, you could really make their products shine! You might even see if you can find someone with a SawStop so you could do a demo video for them.
      Either way, good luck!

    Good for you, Dan. Congratulations on your new saw. As others have said, I'm glad I could be a part of the process. You put out some good content so it's a good thing that you could benefit from all your hard work.
    When I saw them putting the large box in your truck I was curious how you were going to get it out. When I bought my Ridgid R4512 a month or so ago, I had been wondering for weeks ahead of time, how I was going to get it out of my truck. My wife suggested on of the long tables we have in the garage but I thought they wouldn't be strong enough. Without any other good ideas, I tried the table. I wedged it between my tail gate and the lip of concrete leading in to the garage and then just slid the box down. Easy peasy.
    BTW, I'm in S. TX now, but I'm from Orange Co, CA myself (born and raised). Humidity is normally high, being that close to the ocean. And the "late night, early morning low clouds and fog" days are just something you get used to. The difference between TX and CA is, it gets hot and stays hot here in TX, so the humidity is much more noticeable.

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker What I like the most is mainly just the cut quality and finish left on the wood/plywood. The runout is pretty much non-existent, the carbide tips on the teeth are massive compared to most blades, and my saw actually got quieter! All hints of burning, rough edges, etc are completely gone. I had an 80-tooth Diablo blade that gave pretty good splinter-free cuts, but I didn't realize how bad the runout was until I compared it to the Ridge 80-tooth Melacrafter Plywood/Melamine blade. I do a significant amount of my woodworking in plywood, so I have a dedicated blade for that and the veneer never chips out, even on the cheap 1/4" Birch and Oak plywood you get at Home Depot.
      Stumpy also has a 10% off coupon in one of his videos about their blades, otherwise other retailers often time sell them lower than the direct cost.

    I stopped the video to advise: Get some Johnson Paste Wax to put on the table top. It prevents rust from happening and makes the top slick to allow wood to glide. I tried Boeshield T9 and it's not even close to being as good as the Johnson's. It is like magic. I live in Kentucky where the humidity is so thick in the summer you could cut out a block of it and sit on it.

      @@PatCrowe I totally agree with you about T9, and Johnson's wax. Johnson's wax is like magic. Initially, I didn't want to use it because the smell seems to linger forever. Then I learned that it's the rags I used to apply the wax that smelled, and simply washing them solved that problem. Obvious, I guess, in hindsight. 😄

    Awesome dude! You’ll love it! Last August I bought the Sawstop PCS 3HP 52” with the integrated base and I love it! It’s an awesome saw. If you get a dado stack, be sure you check Sawstops website for the dado stacks that are tested and recommended! Happy sawing 👍

      Thanks, Barry. By the way, I found out some information about why SawStop isn't sold over there. It's a combination of lots of regulations they'd have to follow, and different woodworker preferences for how things are designed. But my guess is that if Festool is sold over there, you'll see some Festool table saws with SawStop technology reasonably soon. Not sure if that would include a JobSite saw or not. On the other hand, I think this saw only takes up about 8 more inches of space, length-wise.

    Congrats Dan! Good idea about checking your angles even when using the stops. Depending on the manufacturer, the digital angle gauges can have a tolerance of +/- 2 degrees. For woodworking thats probably okay. But, a good machinists's square is a good investment.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому +1

      Interesting. I have some decent squares (or at least I *think* they're decent). I guess you're saying I can get better results with the squares and eyeballing it, than I can with a digital gauge? Tell me more - not only is this interesting, but it might make for a good video. Thanks!

    • @czellner5894
      @czellner5894 5 років тому

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker Digital angle gauges are a great time saver and for most applications they are just fine. But, there is a reason machinists don't use them for critical cuts. In my opinion, setting the squareness of a table saw IS critical. When the manufacturer states that there is a built in +/- tolerance, I pay very close attention to when and where that tolerance is acceptable. A 2 degree +/- could be 4 degrees if it is all on one side. Most folks have never read the spec sheet on any digital device.
      Very accurate digital gauges are available. But, they are very expensive. Hope I made this clear enough to make sense. I can obviously be long-winded. LOL

      @@czellner5894 Thanks. You didn't completely answer my question, but I think I can glean the answer. So I should be able to eyeball it with a good square to tell if it's 90 degrees, better than the gauge will tell me, right? Assuming a light behind the square and all that jazz?
