  • Let's talk tomatoes! I'm excited to grow a big variety of tomatoes this year. I'm growing mostly heirloom tomato varieties, but this year I'm adding a couple hybrids as well. We'll talk paste/sauce tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and slicer tomatoes.

I'm doing something new this year ... this will be my 19th year of gardening and I have a very busy year ahead. I've decided to maintain and improve what I have (lots of perennials and volunteer annuals), start NOTHING inside, and sow-in-place just a few things. I did a bit of winter sowing, too. I always have a lot of tomato volunteers, but usually I just compost them because the ones I start inside are ready several weeks before the ones that volunteer. This year it will be all volunteers, but I'll move them to the same location.
    Happy gardening!!

Volunteer plants are wonderful! They often seem to be healthier than the transplants. Sounds like you have a great plan!

Another tomato we will grow every year is the Thornburn's Terra-Cotta. 2023 was the first time we grew the burnt orange tomato and we were absolutely gob-stopped. It has the most delicious tomato sandwich flavor. Amazing flavor and performance! I'm looking forward to seeing your experience with the Sart Roloise tomato. We like the Orange Strawberry as well for performance, size, flavor, sauce. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve heard such good things about Thorburn’s terra cotta - I can’t wait to try it!

The struggle is real! I feel your pain in trying to cut tomato varieties down, lol! I have space for about 24 plants or fewer, but I have seed packets for at least 50 varieties, lol. I always want to try some new ones, too. Luke from MIGardener just commented the other day that Roma's are not actually paste tomatoes, which I did not know. They are a plum tomato, which refers to the size of the tomato, but they have more juice than a paste or sauce tomato. My best success with paste tomatoes so far were Pozzano hybrid tomatoes...they are similar to San Marzano but more productive, indeterminant, and larger fruits. I will grow those every year until I find something better. I have heard good things about Jersey Devil, and I need to try that one. I am very excited to try some dwarf tomato project varieties this year! They are supposed to have great flavor and still produce a lot with a more compact plant that is easier to manage. I'm going to plant about 5 different ones to see how they do. If they do well, I will grow more of them next year. They are all open pollinated.

I’m curious to hear how your dwarf tomatoes do! There are so many interesting varieties now, so I imagine they would make great container plants! I haven’t tried pozzano tomatoes, but I may try them next year if I’m not satisfied with my current varieties.

It’s so hard to make cuts! This year I’m going back to large cages and no pruning. That means less plants. I’ve cut out all cherries so I can try new saladettes. I’ve cut all red slicers to try new paste varieties. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster 😂😂😂
You have great selections. Of all the darks I’ve tried, Cherokee purple is the best. For thorburns terracotta the outside seemed to ripen long before the inside so I had a hard time picking at the right time. Happy planting!

Thank you for the tip on Thorburn’s terra cotta! It sounds like harvesting that one at just the right ripeness is key. Cherokee purple is my favorite so far, but for some reason I feel compelled to try all the dark tomatoes!

Here in zone 7 E TN, the Jersey Devil was our best performing paste tomato in 2023. The Sungold cherry is always our first ripened and last to die tomato. After watching this video, I'm going to try the Sungold Select this year. The dark tomatoes had a rough time last year here as well. We always grow Cherokee Purple and last year we tried a hybrid Cherokee-Carbon as well. As expected, the hybrid did out-perform the dark heirlooms. We will grow both again this year. You may have just talked me into growing the Black Brandywine again this year as well. Thank you for sharing!

I tried the Jersey devil in New Jersey & performed really badly 😢

Sungold is a winner for sure! The Cherokee carbon sounds like a great one to try too - I’ll add that to my future list! I’m glad to hear the jersey devil was successful for you!

Wow what a list! I grew a bunch of varieties last year and I am really cutting back this year. I grew the jersey devil last year and all of them had blossom end rot. That’s not typically an issue I have, so I’m on the fence about trying them again. I really want the big sauce tomatoes but I also want to maximize my garden space for production. I hope you have such a good season. I’m surprised not to see the pineapple tomato on this list. Did you like that one last year? I really liked that flavor for tomato sandwiches, but we only need one plant.

We did really enjoy the pineapple tomato! It didn’t make the cut this year mostly because I didn’t have seeds for it, and also because even though the flavor was delicious it didn’t yield as well as some others. The Dr. Wyche’s had a similar yield, but I chose that one over the pineapple since I already had the seeds.

I was going to try to pare down this year as well. However, I just started 24 varieties and have a few more coming in the mail. It's a yearly struggle.

Yes it’s definitely a challenge! I ended up choosing more varieties than I planned on!

Heirlooms can definitely be a challenge…I love them, but it is true that they don’t often yield as well as hybrids.
