Cost Avoidance: every item you pull out from a load (ziplocks, sharpies, paper, packing tape, etc) that you would by for use in your business is a dollar that you don’t have to spend. We consider it a Cost Avoidance bonus, which is almost like profit, once the cost of the unit is paid for.. Good totes are expensive!

Man you have patience to go through all that !!! My father and mother in law passed. My husband and I had the honor of cleaning their home out. Two attics, a hidden under the stairs area, double car garage, storage unit, outside shed packed full to the top. Took approximately 3 years to get cleaned out. We found manager diamonds in “oh this is trash” box.

You should open the kit before you toss it. That is just the sort of place people hide money. There's no real risk in opening up something like that as long as your careful. There could be an uncapped used syringe or something so you'd want to be careful but I'd still open it and look.

Also, a naloxone kit is not garbage - if it’s unused, it could save someone’s life. Might have been good to donate somewhere in Edmonton. Ah well, Alex has to make quick decisions, and I don’t begrudge him that one.

    • @tomfournier4941
      @tomfournier4941 Рік тому +2

@@shinyshinythings I think his experience with the big bag of drugs has left him a little hesitant about storage lockers. It is true that you can be exposed to unhealthy things dealing with other people's stuff. Of course no more so than doing the house clear outs that Alex does. As far as donating the kit, I'm not sure about that. Maybe if it has a seal on it that proves it's unopened. Otherwise there may be some concern about tampering or adulteration of the contents. I don't know this for certain but charitable organizations might be unwilling to take a kit from some random guy who found it in a storage locker. No disrespect intended to Alex. I think anyone walking in off the street would be a random guy. I saw that it went straight into the garbage unopened and I know that was for safety reasons due to Alex being concerned about possible exposure to narcotics. I do think he should have carefully opened it first though just because it would be a great place to hide valuables.

Many times things that Melissa says are the same way I feel about things. I have an instant pot. Actually two lol. You needed it and had no idea. You can cook meat from frozen! Reheat dishes with the trivet on steam and they do not dry out. I made homemade yogurt in it yesterday with just organic whole A2 milk and yogurt starter I ordered from Europe to get one without sugar. It turned out delicious! I cook in it daily. The main reason is that it shuts itself off. No need to watch it cook once you see the pressure valve up, you know it's fine on it's own

Hi,Alex. The "First aid" items that you were afraid of ( with good cause) are good to have on hand. The little case of Naloxone is very important. It's an antidote for opioid overdose. This is taught in the St. John Ambulance ( first aid ) course. If you happen upon someone who looks like they have taken an overdose of something; you can give them the emergency dose of Naloxone ( its a nasal spray ). The kit contains 2 treatments plus 2 CPR face masks with one way filtered valve, 1pair of nitrite gloves and instructions. No needles. Even if the person did not take an opioid; Haloxone is safe. Just a little info for you.🙂

First Unit is a good example of a comment I’ve made before. Bring a 6’ folding table and a box of heavy duty contractor trash bags. Put a trash bag in the first big box (or tote) you open and place it at the end of the table. Bring the boxes up to a comfortable height either on the table or by sitting them on a full box or tote and sort right into the trash. Use the better bins and boxes, from the unit, to hold anything worth taking home or donating.
Initially pick out the larger items for consideration, then tip the bins, boxes on their sides and run the goods over the table for visual review and right into the trash. Less risk of needle sticks or being cut and less chance of missing something small but valuable, like a good watch or jewelry.
When the first trash bag is full, pull it and put in another. Having them in a box or tote holds the bag open, for faster filling. At home, or if I have a trailer with me, I bring a full size trash can for that job. In the end, you process the unit faster and end up with 3 groups. Trash, donate and take home. I try to get the take home into the cleanest totes and boxes so less mess comes into the house. If I’m bringing a trailer along, I bring along a group of stackable bins (lids too) to make loading the trailer easier.

      Dear Brian Henry.
👍👌👏 That's exactly the way to do it! 2) But Mr. Archbold will always fiddle around with only one hand in everything and therefore always make a big mess. No matter if it is a storage room or a box or a complete hoarder house. He always unwraps everything and very often puts glass/china etc. unwrapped in boxes. I often felt 😱! Maybe sometimes this behaviour is even good for hiding really precious stuff from the camera/viewers. For instance this time the pocket watch was not unpacked and not mentioned again.
However: All of this current stuff is still worth at least 1600 to 1800 bucks. Even despite the fact of all the things that have been donated (including the table and the lamp). So he at least doubled his money (plus the proceed fom/out of utube of course). Mainly he simply is a really good merchant.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.

This is the way I do it with stuff from auction lots.
I learned it without much trial or error after watching a few videos while in the hospital two years ago when I was first "introduced" to Alex and family.
Locker Nuts does it very similarly, using a trash can, and/or trash boxes if he forgets his cans.

    • @brianhenry2385

@@TiptonMama It's something you either learn from a mentor or learn for yourself, in time. You look at the photos of the unit and the size and decide what you go with you, in addition to gloves and masks. My kit often has packing tape, a stack of bins (with lids or flip tops), contractor trash bags and a hand truck, if I know that the particular facility lacks those handy rolling carts.
The first auctioneer I worked with (25 years ago) used to say, only handle each item once, while sorting, so having the trash can, charity box and empty bin to go home, means you only touch each item once while on site. Pushing loose items around in bins means you might toss something out that could pay for lunch.
Being organized with boxes and bins also makes stacking the trailer with the stuff going home easier. It can be loaded with boxes packed level or bins, leaving the loose stuff and odd balls (boxes with things sticking out) to go on top of the totes, dressers, etc. Packing cubes is easier then random stuff and if you are far from home can save a trip, when doing multiple or large units.
Anything that saves time on site is good, then you can get on to the important thing --- lunch! LOL

@@Chr.U.Cas1622 I don't disagree with you about him being a fiddler, or needing good footage for youtube, but even he has to pay for the units and make a profit in the long run and just doubling up on storage units isn't often enough. You can go broke slowly that way, when the price of gas and dump fees are up and the commission you pay an auction house or consignment store to shift the goods.
It's fun, but doesn't pay the bills. The first unit is a good example of what I would call and why I used it to make my initial comment. I've been doing this work for decades and can still be fooled into overpaying up front and really struggling to make a profit (after expenses) on some units. One that looks great in the on-line photos can be trash, smell like pet urine or cig smoke, which you don't know from the photos.
      Take care,
      Brian

@@brianhenry2385 Brian, that's all invaluable advice, so thank you very much for taking the time to share it with me.
I really only ever saw a few of those storage wars shows and figured they were all for show, and while I love the idea of the hunt, it just didn't strike my fancy. Then laid up for 5 weeks, between ICU, and skilled nursing, I had a lot of downtime, and I couldn't focus a lot. Short videos with no plot were everything to me, and I did overed, after I was home, still recuperating, I learned far more than I realized.
Purely by happenstance, I came across a local auction company, like Kastner's and started watching their auctions online, and to my surprise, I realized Alex had taught me a great deal about many of the lots I was watching.
My first foray was to bid on a nice corner desk for my husband's home office. He'd been looking at getting one in the $300-500 range, and instead I paid $1.19 ha! He, and I were hooked.
I haven't been able to really sell much the past few months due to illness again, so I'm looking to follow in Alex's lead again, and offload all of the things I've procured to the local auction company and let them handle it for me. It'll just need to wait until I'm healed up enough from this recent surgery, so another month, and I'll be able to start labeling items for them.

It's pretty weird that you found the Alejandro Jodorowsky book in the first unit. He's a Chilean-French filmmaker, and the guy who owned the 2nd unit went to Chile. Jodorowsky's made some pretty trippy films, and he was going to do a FAR OUT version of Frank Herbert's Dune.

The bins themselves are worth money especially the ones from the second unit but even regular rubbermaid ones sell well second hand.

When I got workbooks from my schools I got to keep I saved them and gave them to my cousin so she can look back on all the notes and things I put in it if she's stuck on something. She'd also do some of the workbook pages and make sure they're correct. When she no longer needed a workbook she'd pass it down to someone else so they can learn and have plenty of examples to look at if they got stuck. It was our way of helping others with school.

I have that same model of Instant Pot and I love it for making chicken soup from the carcasses (I buy whole organic chickens and use every bit of them that I can), stews, and also for making small cheesecakes. It's also great for getting tough cuts of meat tender quickly (brisket, BBQ ribs, etc). And it makes short work of artichokes, root vegetables, and tough things like kale spines. You scored some NICE stuff from that locker. The London Fog trenchcoat w/liner and the goosedown jacket alone had to be a couple hundred each new.
