Making Firewood Bundles. How Much Money Can You Make?

  • I just started a firewood bundle business. I am working on my first order bundling firewood with a homemade bundler I built. I am doing this test to see how quickly I can make bundles and how profitable it will be. From the results of my test, I will discuss how much money I am making per hour bundling firewood versus selling it in bulk by the cord.

    My sister and her husband live near Hope BC. The road they live on leads into the provincial park. They have a road side stand for bundled wood. He has to work hard to keep it stocked during the camping season....Makes lots of money off his small wood lot that way.

    In Fall of 2022, I paid around $9 for a kiln dried bundle, at retail, in southwestern PA. Somebody made good money. Fortunately I don't have to pay that anymore.

    Thanks Wilson, I sell 1 cubic ft for $5 in the northeast, I made my own bundler and use 80 gauge cast stretch wrap, 4 wraps per bundle. Take care

    Great video, we just started selling bundles last year and did pretty well. I have a few ideas for this year to make it better. I just welded up a hand crank bundler, it already has made bundling a little easier, and like you said not a lot faster, but easier.

      I can imagine that would make it easier, or at least less tiring. there’s definitely money in bundles. Thanks for the comment.

    we use to sell 5 cords for $500. Then prices of fuel, chainsaws, etc kept going up. Prices change. But this is nice for people to have when they just want to enjoy the occasional evening camping.

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому +2

      I remember the days when it was close to $100 a cord. Those of us who have a lot of wood it seems ridiculous to pay that much for a bundle. But for those who want just one evening, it makes sense to pay eight dollars or $10 for a bundle, instead of $300 for a cord they won’t use.

    I've noticed many of the guys doing these bundles usually split their pieces smaller diameter to make bundling easier though this doesn't necessarily give the customer a very long burn time. I guess that would definitely have them running back to the firewood stand to buy more wood though.

    • @amandadavis9726
      @amandadavis9726 Місяць тому

      You actually get more wood per cubic feet when you split them smaller. It’s because they utilize more of the air gaps within the bundle.

    Good video. Need to factor in the time and other stuff that went into your getting the wood in the position to bundle it, ie felling, bucking, splitting etc. Around here (southern edge of the Adirondacks in NY) the price for a face cord averages about $75 and that is for dry hardwood. I see bundles in roadside stands ranging from 5 to 10 bucks.

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому +1

      I figured the cost of getting wood into the position to bundle it is built into the $300 per cord I subtracted that we would get here selling it by the cord. After that the figures are just for the bundling. But yeah people do forget to factor in a lot of things. including depreciation on vehicles, their new tractors, their new excavators etc.

    I made a bundle 12 x 12 x 16, it was way too heavy and it was jammed into my holder. Then when I could pull it out it got loose. I'm little, it need to make smaller bundles. Is .75 cu ft actually 9 x 12 x 16 or is it 9 x 12 x 12?

      I will save that for when I am not trying to do a video at the same time. Some people have a hard time walking and chewing gum at the same time. I have a hard time talking and picking up more than one piece at the same time.

    how much is the weight per bundle? cost of bundle? and cost of supplies?

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  Рік тому +1

      That was a year ago, I don’t think I weighed them. I didn’t run out of the wrap I bought so didn’t figure out the exact cost per bundle. The way I was doing it, it was minimal. $40 worth of wrap produced over $2000 worth of bundles. In that area bundles are selling for 6 to 7 dollars each.

      This was over a year ago I don’t remember all the details. What I do remember saying in the video is I don’t want to say how much I am getting because I didn’t want to give my customers wholesale pricing away. But I did allude that it was in the range of the $6 I was doing a lot of the calculations in the video for. I believe I was also giving different examples of how much you would make at for example $3.

    • @WilsonForestLands
      @WilsonForestLands  7 місяців тому +4

      I just watched it. I started out saying “IF”you were getting $3 per bundle that would mean I made a certain amount. I did not say I was getting $3 per bundle. I said “IF” not “I AM”.
      Right after that I said “around here they give considerably more than that”
      Then I said I don’t want to tell the price that I’m getting because I want to keep my customers business private.
      Then I started talking about how much someone would make if they were getting $6 a bundle. And started going on and on about how in this area we are on the high end because firewood is expensive here.
      Nowhere in this video did I say I get $3 per bundle or even say how much I get per bundle.
      What I did do in this video is compare what someone would make if they were getting $3 per bundle versus what they would get if they were making $6 per bundle. These are hypothetical numbers.
