Only “When…you can” effects can miss timing. Basically, if the last completed action was not the condition of the “When…you can” effect then it will miss timing. In the case of the second duel, Francesco activates Spirit of Yubel as Chain Link 1, Matthieu activates Kashtira Fenrir as Chain Link 2 and targets Lacrima, Francesco doesn’t respond with an effect, Matthieu activates effect veiler as Chain Link 3, then Francesco activates Phantom of Yubel as Chain Link 4. Now Chains resolve in descending order so Phantom of Yubel resolves first to change Veiler’s effect as Chain Link 4, Veiler resolves with its effect modified to allow Francesco to Destroy Yubel from the Deck as Chain Link 3, then Fenrir resolves to banish Lacrima face down as Chain Link 2 and finally, Spirit of Yubel resolves to set Nightmare Pain as Chain Link 1. Now, you would think Yubel would be able to activate on a new Chain to Summon Terror Incarnate, but, the effect has a “When…you can” structure, so we have to go back and check what the last completed action was, and if that action was the condition after the “When…” part of the effect then it can be activated. For the case of the duel, the last completed action was Nightmare Pain was set from the Deck, and not the condition on Yubel. So Yubel can’t be activated and this situation is known as the effect activation missing its timing.
