When Nightwish parted ways with their original singer Tarja in 2005, the breakup was... not amicable. Nobody really handled the situation well, and the fans of the band were not happy to say the least. Tuomas (the keyboardist and songwriter for the band) took the brunt of the abuse from the outraged fans and it led him into a deep and dark depression. Not only had he had to fire his best friend from the band, now the fans were turning on him and he felt that his baby, Nightwish, was dying. He wrote this song as a form of suicide so he wouldn’t do it in real life, knowing the pain his death would cause his family and friends. There’s an insane amount of emotions in this song, and Floor does such a magnificent job bringing them out. It’s beautiful and heart wrenching at the same time.

Tuomas was not her best friend. He merely was interested in her. In all those years he very seldom ever visited her at home or invited her to his home.
      They were comrades, not friends.

Singing is technique and art and Floor is a Queen. Many say that she is the best metal vocalist and I wouldn't disagree. But she is solidly one of the best vocalists in the world in any genre. You understood this song.

Floor is friends with Tarja and Nightwish. She brings something to this in a way I doubt anyone else could as she is connected so closely to the players in the situation this song is about. I always wonder what kind of roller coaster it takes her on especially when fist singing it.

Looking for more in the list, I saw this thumbnail with your expression of horror. So I went looking what could upset you so terribly and I found this. Thanks! Since then I went searching for more Nightwish and all about Floor and her appearances in Ayreon as well. So you really freshened up my perception of symphonic metal.

@@banderezztonylapore9493 Floor is a great singer but it doesn't seem fair to say she's the best. Tarja was an amazing singer and with her operatic voice it is what made Nightwish special in the first place (to me at least). Listening to songs like Nemo/Phantom of the Opera/Over the Hills, etc I prefer Tarja's voice.
I would recommend that people listen to both, their older stuff with Tarja and their later stuff with Floor, they each brought something to the band and it does a disservice to say one or the other is the "best" imo. Especially when you can enjoy both of them rather then sticking to just one.

I was a huge fan from the first time they put out an album with tarja. The band with tarja were really incredible for that time cause female singers in a heavy symphonic metal outfit n operatic singing didnt exist at that level of perfection at that time. When tarja left a lot of fans were really not happy with the situation and the way it was handled on both sides . This song is about his traumatic take on having to fire tarja the fans reaction his reaction to the situation the worlds reaction (reminding at this particular time they were getting really big)etc... I remember when DARK PASSION PLAY came out in 2005 15 YEARS ago n the beautiful n wonderful annete olzon replaced tarja n completely killed it but with a completely different style. The first song was this song the poet and the pendulum. In 2005 when i played this song with those lyrics and the incredible piece of music, emotional outpourring of his soul it was simply art made to perfection. I have a bit of trouble with Floor jansen cause she doesnt really impress me on the latest nightwish albums with her singing . in this live rendition she is wonderfull . Its crazy to think that this song is 15 years old and just now people are freaking out over it n really digging everything about nightwish . Anette olzon did a fantastic job on that album n that song is the best nightwish song ever written hands down

Great reaction. Just subscribed. Yeah, this is probably my second favorite NW song and you're right in saying that it's emotional. I consider this one of the biggest emotional roller coasters in music, and I listen to a lot of music. The fact that Tuomas essentially considers this his emotional suicide as to cope with his depression as to not do something like that in real life just makes it that much more powerful. Oh, and that is in fact a tree that is holding up the keyboard (or at least a stand that is in the shape of a tree).

It’s a great song and very emotional, the back story relates to Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboard player/ songwriter/ composer) and the split between him (Nightwish)and the first lead singer Tarja ..that’s simplified. Nightwish are an amazing band... Floor is a stunning singer and in Nightwish is perfection.

honey honey the keyboardist/lyricist, is acting out his death in song, tuomas formed the band with lifelong schoolmate and original lead singer tarja turnemen who was also a badass singer with opera training, in 1996 nightwish was formed, in 99 tarja married and eased into solo recordings, the band needed her all in with them as their popularity was rising, the band said tuomas you have to dismiss tarja from the band, he could'nt he loved her in more ways than one i think, this song is him killing himself without doing it in real life is how i understand it all i know is its a fuqin masterpiece

I've followed Tuomas through his awakening, his first steps, his flight to the sky, and yes, through his despair, his musical drought, and his attempts to find closure with his last album. All his problems have been caused by his own actions or inactions, all have led him to his next stage of enlightenment, and all have been a precursor to his ultimate revelation. I believe he will soon see what all this has been leading up to, and the music that will spring forth from his heart and mind will have no equal. Such is the nature of his gift. I can barely wait until he opens his eyes, to find the 1000 pages are not erased, but awaiting the vision to see them clearly.

Just to get it straight for all those who still write that thing.
Thoumas never meant wanted or thought about killing himself. like never.
The core of the band went to the same school, letting her go was hard for all of them, and him since he took alot of the heat for it, and NW is his life work and he was unsure what would become of it.
Even though there was a reason for her being cut, she had said she wanted to do other things, and wanted to do solo things, and that wasnt the right place to be in when the rest of the band wanted more NW.
This song is in acts, each act about the states he went through with this, the sadness the anger until the end with the words from his mother, things she really did tell him.
So saying the song is his suicide because he didnt want to do it in real life, even though its more correct than the first, its still not really true.
In this song he kills off the parts that kept making him sad and in doubt. dealing with it act for act, the anger and pain and all the things that just bottled up inside.
So not a suicide of him, but of negative parts in him. And there is many things in the lyrics with more than one meaning, the mother part that did happen.
In the song the boy mention 3 minutes. and 3 minutes later the change happen in the song. And so on. But.. over all. since its a thing people really need to stop writing in every reaction video.
No Thoumas never thought about killing himself, his own words..
He have said he never would because he just love life to much.
And the song isnt his alter suicide, more the slaying of his deamons. :)? using his music to deal with something that really got to him because it was so personal.
It was his lifes work with the band and music. its was friends and people he had known and been up and down for years. it was fans that didnt understand, it was the fear of what now. what will nightwish be.
it was everything. And that is why there is these acts.. he is angry this happend, he dont understand it, he is affraid, he is sad, he think of what now. he thinks he is all alone, and he heal.
Its the road of everthing to do with her leaving the band, the pain to the thought of a better future.
We need to stop the wrong idea of suicide.. Toumas deserves better than having it turned that way.
its his song, and feelings and they are as they should be, and meant to be, and is powerfull for it. It do not need a sucide internet fantasy.

The Ideal singer for this Band would have been Anne Wilson from Heart she had the power in her voice to really drive the music! shame it was different eras.

Floor is a damn good singer, but she doesn’t hold a candle up to their original singer. Tarja was a trained opera singer who could make your jaw drop. Such a shame she left. Listen to their ‘Wishmaster’ album and you’ll see what I mean!
