One of the things I've always loved about this is Floor isn't "singing" the song, she is "performing" the song. You can absolutely tell the difference.
Yes. Every movement of her hands (for example the Whore for a Cold World sections, particularly the last; the All you need is to feel my love and so on). I've never heard anyone comment on the "Spitting on his grave as they came" which to me is really powerful and she again has the hand action to emphasise it. She is a master of performance, not just singing. But then, they all are!
Every single song from Nightwish is the prove that Tuomas Holopainen is the most talented composer from our age... Let them say that I lived in the times of Tuomas...
As someone who battles against depression for almost a decade the "Mother and Father" section always makes me cry. When you are really, really bad only those who love you practically unconditionally can understand and give you some hope.
You are not alone. I am battling against depression for almost three decades. Tuomas has gone through a depression himself. Only him was able to describe what a depression feels like. He is holy! 😘
Unfortunately, not all parents love their children unconditionally. I've met lots of beautiful people who have been scarred for life because of a severe lack of love, or even abuse by their parents.
My compliments, Maggie! This was 1 hour 12 minutes and 32 seconds of quality time spent in the best way possible! I don't know if Tuomas ever talked about this in an interview but I've got a strong feeling the one and only reason Tuomas put this song on the setlist for this tour was that he finally had a front woman who could do it justice.
Yes, she's great. She takes the trouble to look up the lyrics and the circumstances under which the song was written, and we're really interested in that too. That alone sets it apart from other wannabe reactions who are just trying to feed on the subject.
Jesus! Can't ask for a better review than this. Your operatic voice is stunning. And the fact that you sing and teach people the difference between what fully opera voice is like compared to the tonality she sings is incredible.
This was the best reaction on a Nightwish song I‘ve ever heard and seen. Nobody has ever given so much background information to this song. It was a complete new experience to re-listen the song again with all the background in mind. Floor and Tarja know each other and as far as I know they‘re also friends. Can you imagine how it felt like for her to sing this song with the band? I have just subscribed to your channel after this video.
This was an epic reaction with unmatched depth and breadth to match the incredible performance in this video. Thank you and all who participated. Also, just WOW!
I've been a fan of Nightwish very shortly after they were formed. Found out about them pretty fast since Finland is our neighbour and have been there more times then I can mention. Love the country, love the people. Nightwish was something different, a sailing ship in ocean full of steamers. Their style, their music, lyrics - all was different, unique. Loved Tarja as their singer. When this event occurred what is mentioned in that letter, I was sad but I remained behind the band. I acknowledged that only ones who know what's best for them, what needs to be done and how to move forward - and only ones who have any say in this - is the band. It was a sad thing, sure, and raised a serious concern if the band will continue, but they did, with Anette Olson. I was glad that they were still there, still showing to us their magic. For a short time I received very little news about Nightwish and when I saw them again, Floor Jansen was with them. I remember thinking "Wait, this isn't Anette, is it Nightwish?". It was. And then Floor sang. And very first thought I had was "This is Nightwish at their best, they've been always extremely good, but now they're above extremely good. Way above." Have my Nightwish ticket ready and waiting for their show here this year, assuming that the blasted virus doesn't play tricks and shuffle things around.

Before Tuomas wrote The Poet and The Pendulum, he wrote "Dead Boys' Poem". Regarding this earlier song, Tuomas said "This is the most personal song I've ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an "I don't care" -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It's all, without it I'm dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song's lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul." - before he wrote The Poet and The Pendulum.... The “oceans within” part kills me every single time 😢 the entire rest of this song shows you what may have happened had this mother father part not taken place. Hi Maggie, thank you for this lovely reaction. I appreciate so much you wanted to find out the background story of the band and all that information what happened earlier. This is a song which brings up tears every time I hear it. You mentioned Marko and his singing. How about one Nightwish song where Marko sings the whole song - Islander - Tampere 2015. He has truly a great voice. See you soon.
Great reaction. For a fun song next try "I want my tears back" from Buenos Aires in 2019. That will get all of the sadness out of you. And, as a bonus, you get to see Troy.
pausing and talking is great. there are plenty of reactors who just sit there throughout the songs, just nodding along, not saying anything. this song in particular is subject to copyright strikes, so frequent pauses are recommended. look fab in red. saw some other performances of this song in other places. no matter where, no matter how many times they perform it, Emmpu checks in with Tuomas every time.
Hello Maggie, new subscriber here. I see you have done some reviews of my two favorite bands, Nightwish #1 and Disturbed #2. When you're doing the windmill, I love it. Take a chapter from Floor and put your hands on your thighs when you do windmill cause it apparently takes the pressure off the spine and neck and there's a lot less risk of hurting your throat. Got that from a bunch of other opera singers and voice coaches who reviewed her. They say she's very smart and doing it properly and in the right stance and placement of hands. Keep on doing Nightwish and Disturbed!
this is probably the most in depth look on this song iv seen to date. i appreciate the homework you did to truly understand the meaning behind the song. thank you for this vid!
If you watch again, keep an eye on the lighting truss. It keeps getting lower and lower (like the pendulum) until the end of the 3 minutes and during the intro to act v they slowly work their way back up out of sight.
I am a old school Nightwish fan. I saw them live first time as a starting bad in a fairly small club and fell in love with the sound and well.... Tarja's voice. So the break up hurt me back in those day when it happened. I have a huge appreciation towards what the band has become after that and I think it might be the best band in the world today. Huge thanks for doing this great song in the way I think it should be done even though it is incredible without knowing the background. Thanks for this great video and showing the world what a reaction video can be. All the best and even though this comes way too late I think after this song hugs are in order for you Maggie and all the awesome people watching the vid.
Floor has a very special voice and a unique abilty to perform songs with so much empathy and understanding of what and how the song has to sound to give it that last undefinable quality to all of the songs, she makes YOU FEEL tha song as well, and not just in this song
There is good music, great music, and music that rises to transcendent art. This is a transcendent! Great reaction too. I rarely watch reactions longer than 20-25 min, but this was well worth the hour+ I dedicated to it.
This might be my favourite reaction of this song that I've heard so many times. For a couple of reasons, you did it justice. Very good commentary and seeking the meaning. But also because I hadn't heard of you... before someone posted a screencap of the "Thank you Sami" in Nightwish discord asking is this our Sami. lol. Can't take credit on this one, but I have it on my computer to cheer me up if needed. Anyways, have a new subriber. :) Also, awesome windmill. Be proud of it.

Have to tell you how much I appreciate and enjoyed this reaction. This one was right i. Your wheel house and you across confident and informative. Big thumbs up.
My interpretation of the "mother & father" part is actually a conversation he has with his mother in the afterlife, where 'home' is his final destination.
It's really cool. You're young, but so knowledgeable. We love to listen to you sing. You may actually help my wife get into Classical and Opera. Nightwish Army, Pennsylvania, USA reporting.
There is so much more (and a lot better too) in Lucassen's music that seeing just this one song recommended all over the place is starting to become painful...
Maggie, as a long time Nightwish fan, Thank you for taking the time to go through all the history behind this song. I remember being completely confused about when Tarja "left" Nightwish, I was young and didn't know about either of the open letters, so thank you for helping me fully understand what happened back then. keep up the amazing reactions and diving into the history on occasion. Cheers from Canada :)
Great reaction and commentary! One thing I’ve noticed with the different reactors is no one has mentioned that the song is written backwards, with the first lyrics being “The End” sung by the child soprano.
THANK YOU Maggie! I did got so much more of this masterpiece, as I watched you, and heard your accurate and genuine comments. I also like those windmills you did, but don´t hurt yourself. I love the way you do these reacts. Greets from Finland. Stay safe.
There is Toamas meeting with his parents during his time of troubles and there is the allegorical poet meeting with his parents in the afterlife after dieing beneath the blade of Edgar A. Poe's diabolical machine.
Why was the letter made public, you ask. Here is the explanation. Tarja was loved by the fans, and lots of them idolized here to such an extent that they really believed that Tarja’s talent was the sole reason for the band’s success. The fanbase believed that she on her own was responsible for the success and they believed that the band would not be able to survive without her. Of course this is all far besides the truth. Tarja’s talent is obvious, but the existance of a band is not defined by a vocalist only. There are countless examples of bands who survived a change of vocalist. And yet the fanbase was living in their own reality at this point. This was the reason for the band (or Tuomas) to publish the letter. They felt that they had to explain to the fans that she could indeed be missed and the reasons why, and that the band would indeed continue without her. They felt they were obliged to give some explanation because they felt they needed to bring the extremely idolizing fans back into reality. However they never expected it to backfire as tremendously as it did.
They did not have to publish that at all. It would have been just water under the bridge if they had not made such a big deal out of it. And of course the media jumped on the public trashing as they should and the whirlwind was ready to launch.
@@timometsanoja9666 No, some public explanation was VERY necessary for the band and its future. The public idolised Tarja and were unaware of the problems with her.
Thank you for your suggestion and yes, I did it during a 2+ hour stream so many Nightwish fans liked it and asked for me to post it edited. See you Friday 😍
@@SimonPlantinga It was a live stream on YT back then. I think she wants to cut stuff out of the live stream, which have nothing to do with the reaction to the song :)
You have to do " Master passion greed" as well to close that period with Tarja. The song is about Tarja's husband. That song will never be played again. To underdstand this two Songs you have to read the 2 open letters, One from nightwish to Tarja, and one from her to the band, easy to find on the Internet.
@@maggiereneemusic curious what your purpose is by asking "Did They Betray Tarja" ? are you trying to start some bitter comments from Tarja fans that are still after 16yrs upset about her departure? There is if your not aware some tension within the fan base from many older NW fans & others that are more than content with Floor.Or just trying to up the views for this re-reaction?
If you really want to understand the level of rage and frustration caused by the Tarja firing, Master Passion Greed can explain it better than any explanation.

Hello Maggie, great reaction as allways. One thing I have too say for Floor's clasical style singing of the beginning of chapter three The Pacific: from "Sparkle my scenery" to "swaying blade my lullaby"; is that she cannot sing it in another way because it's originaly singed by the choir boy Guy Elliott, who's still singing in the background with the singer until the poet' speaking part. I totally understand the choices a band must take when they're doing lives, for technical and/or emotional reasons, and especially when you have a new singer, but personally, I would have preferred that they respect this part, because it gives a..."I don't know what" to this part of the song, lol. xD Greetings from a french guy living in Spain, strong hug! PS: i have a poor inglish, so, sorry for that! ;P
Another thing, Floor does it this way at minute 13:20 of the Nightwish's video because this part is also singed by the choir boy in the original studio version, so here again, she could have take more liberty to do it, but I think the song has not that liberty to do so, without changing the feelings attached to the song...
Delicious reaction !!, mainly becouse you can put examples using your amazing voice ... too much talent present in the band (The best out there) and in you !!!, this is not a recomended video for envious persons too much talent to chew and digest !!!. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember Tuomas mention that he does not use a double bass for the string parts, as he prefers a cello tuned down. Also in a series of making of videos for the 2015 album EFMB, Tuomas explains that they record each in instrument on separate tracks with the London Philharmonic and a choir using Pro Tools and he mentioned that for The Greatest Show On Earth they had over 600 tracks at one point that had to down mix, otherwise even the pro computer/software could not handle it.
The fact the band was so emotional after Tarja exited tells me all I really need to know. Tarja acted like she had simply changed her shoes. Nightwish was devastated on an emotional level and Tuomas captured that in this masterpiece. But it was all for a reason. Despite Marco taking his break, nightwish is in the best place they’ve ever been with Floor. She posses the talent and ability to really perform their unique form of symphonic metal. Tarja was very good, but she couldn’t flex the pop style as well as Floor. Anette was to far on the other side of the spectrum as well. Floor is the vocalist they always needed.
The Poet And The Pendulum, Bye Bye Beauriful and Master Passion Greed, listen to these three songs together otherwise you will get a wrong picture of what has happened

@@maggiereneemusic After rewatching this again, don't worry about pausing the video because 1. you have some very important and relevant thoughts to share, you are not just pausing' to hear yourself talk and 2. you are very good at rewinding so it keeps the flow of the song. This song is so deep, it really needs a thorough explanation all the way through the song to catch all the key details of it, both musically and lyrically.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment. 🥳

All news to me as I just discovered this band a month ago. I've taken a deep dive in the band since. I feel that Floor is the best blend between of the first two singers. Ultimately a win for all parties concerned.

See you soon.

pausing and talking is great. there are plenty of reactors who just sit there throughout the songs, just nodding along, not saying anything. this song in particular is subject to copyright strikes, so frequent pauses are recommended. look fab in red. saw some other performances of this song in other places. no matter where, no matter how many times they perform it, Emmpu checks in with Tuomas every time.
Welcome! See you tonight on my livestream for more FUN!! 😜🤣

If you watch again, keep an eye on the lighting truss. It keeps getting lower and lower (like the pendulum) until the end of the 3 minutes and during the intro to act v they slowly work their way back up out of sight.

I fully believe that Tarja and Tuomas loved each other. Not romantically but way deeper and personal than platonically.
This song is proof enough. He was heartbroken.
What a wonderful in-depth background reaction. Thank you!
My pleasure! 😊 Hope to see you on my livestream later tonight?
This is going to be epic!) Can't wait!

Also, awesome windmill. Be proud of it.
How cool! Welcome Samijuo. That's great how this was posted in the Nightwish discord. I had no idea. Sami is a wonderful Patron of mine who also loves Nightwish. Please join our Patron family www.patreon.com/MaggieRenee to connect and we would love to have you as our Nightwish rep here, lol! 🤘😍
Have to tell you how much I appreciate and enjoyed this reaction. This one was right i. Your wheel house and you across confident and informative. Big thumbs up.
My interpretation of the "mother & father" part is actually a conversation he has with his mother in the afterlife, where 'home' is his final destination.
Beautiful emotionally poignant song. Enjoyed the the reaction immensely can't wait till the next one! Loved the windmill!

Great reaction and commentary! One thing I’ve noticed with the different reactors is no one has mentioned that the song is written backwards, with the first lyrics being “The End” sung by the child soprano.

Thank you John! But I have also heard, that "mother and father" part is actually the words from Tuomakses mother.
There is Toamas meeting with his parents during his time of troubles and there is the allegorical poet meeting with his parents in the afterlife after dieing beneath the blade of Edgar A. Poe's diabolical machine.

Ok I love this reaction! And you're so beautiful and talented it's mesmerizing
Apparently, Tarja thought that as well!
This is a pattern of behavior for him, just see how they manage Annette departure...
@@Dulkh4n That was totally different and even if it wasn't, twice in 26 years doesn't make a "pattern"!

You have to do " Master passion greed" as well to close that period with Tarja. The song is about Tarja's husband. That song will never be played again. To underdstand this two Songs you have to read the 2 open letters, One from nightwish to Tarja, and one from her to the band, easy to find on the Internet.
Stay tuned. 🤘

@@maggiereneemusic curious what your purpose is by asking "Did They Betray Tarja" ? are you trying to start some bitter comments from Tarja fans that are still after 16yrs upset about her departure?
