the energy in this song is sooo amazing, you can feel it go in your ears and thru your body charging every cell full of something beautiful.. lovely piece
No matter how many times i hear this the emotion just runs free, so much emotion in this song its bsolutely amazing. If any song were to inspire any one to play music then this is it hes is amazing and so talented its unteachable. All I can say is I cant wait till he hits the UK again thats gonna be an awesome night....
words will never describe what goes on with this song, you can tell that this song is very special to him ....its so freaking incredible i could be in the worst mood....all i gotta do is hear this
I remember this concert broadcast, I just tuned in before the song startet and I thought: oh yeah, just another guy with a guitar...and after it I was amazed by his talent als well as by his music. absolutely brilliant!
Well said Ben... When you showed me this at school i was quite honestly blown away. When an instrumental is played, you can always tell how their feeling. This is probably the best instrumental ive heard in a LONG time, easily the best ive heard on the guitar. Like you said the feeling pours into the piece, well the piece pours into me and makes the piece all the more effective. Amazing performance! SH08 PS: Its Sean btw Ben :D
another reason to admire him XD i'm italian and here he isn't yet well known but i love this song...his face when he's playing is so fucking happy...:D
this man has talent. and whats really unique is that he's using a twelve string guitar, but fingerpicking each of the strings individually, rather than two at a time like other guitarists.
I dont think he ever plays this song the same at any given time, some parts sound the same but its just the basic theme, watch him play and you see why it changes, he just seems to lose himself in a trance, like all he feels is the music, its awesome to see live
Mr Butler plays with aplomb..but please check out Egberto Gismonti...( which if JB has any nouce already has.) EG...is a true world colussus of music and is Brazilian...nuff said...how many 'drone' songs with similar chord progressions..i.e. not many can we take? Carlo Domeniconi's 'Koyunbaba' (Gismonti influenced)..please listen to it...by many artists..John Williams is a start.... A lot of this stuff is showmanship...a fleeting glimpse into what the guitar can really achieve...
There's a 13 minute "studio" version that I can't seem to find ANYWHERE, anyone else come across it? I think it's the best version of all of them. It's not the live 13 minute one here on youtube where he's talking for a few minutes in the beginning.
Do you think its possible he used sharpie or some other sort of permant ink marker on his guitar to do that? I was kind of hoping to do my own design in a similar fashion
Its definetely Open C tuning, 12 string guitar but the high G is taken off, giving you 11 string configuration. The capo is on 4 though, so techincally someone tuned to open E could play this.
The string he removed is the highest string on the guitar, normally the highest string is on the bottom of the guitar, but on a 12 string the highest string is in the middle, its quite annoying.
I love how he never plays it the same way twice, but it's always so beautiful.
he changes it because it's like the ocean, it's never the same!
the energy in this song is sooo amazing, you can feel it go in your ears and thru your body charging every cell full of something beautiful.. lovely piece
I've listened to a number of versions of this song over the years, and I still think this is the best.
No matter how many times i hear this the emotion just runs free, so much emotion in this song its bsolutely amazing. If any song were to inspire any one to play music then this is it hes is amazing and so talented its unteachable. i LOVE how he changes this song from each performance i see. different energy but always with passion.
it's beautiful.

words will never describe what goes on with this song, you can tell that this song is very special to him ....its so freaking incredible i could be in the worst mood....all i gotta do is hear this

i love this version the most, its the most.. calm i guess..
this man has talent.
and whats really unique is that he's using a twelve string guitar, but fingerpicking each of the strings individually, rather than two at a time like other guitarists.
E.P.I.C.!!!!

@thesoulphysician i love the version he played at federation square.... in my opinion it's the best one that i have heard. :)
@cihairottoicoglioni
there is no original version. Each time he plays it , he changes it and thats why this piece is unique :)
He would have hated having to talk in the middle of it. Beautiful version.
very nice vid
this song is just incredible..there arnt even words great enough to describe it.. does anyone know what kind of guitar hes using in this?
Mr Butler plays with aplomb..but please check out Egberto Gismonti...( which if JB has any nouce already has.) EG...is a true world colussus of music and is Brazilian...nuff said...how many 'drone' songs with similar chord progressions..i.e. not many can we take?

Its on his album... Go buy it.
@irontires yes that is just lingo for stomp box. what there called
@irontires yes, i knoe for short hand he says foot. but its called a stomp box.
this music is amazing...gives so much emotion..
check out scott matthews - elusive!
thats another big talent with guitar!
can this version be dowloaded on limewire?
its sick!
@bobbyflay right, or count the pegs on the bridge.
There's a 13 minute "studio" version that I can't seem to find ANYWHERE, anyone else come across it? I think it's the best version of all of them. It's not the live 13 minute one here on youtube where he's talking for a few minutes in the beginning.
"Could you turn up my foot a little bit?" -John Butler
he's incredibly
haha "can you turn my foot up just a litle bit, please."
It's the highest string in pitch on a 12 string guitar, so is very tight. It would probably break as he strums it so hard sometimes.
@TheWebcamcomedy No he really means his foot =P It's kinda like a bass drum in a way.
woah..
does anyone know if they recorded any more songs at this particular venue besides this and "what you want" ? if so i guess they are not on youtube?
a god plays guitar :D
it is different every time. He plays it differently every time. Sort of like Eddie Van Halen's Eruption. He plays that differently every time, too
@bugkillah
it looks like a Takamine bud. I have no idea about the paint job though!
i think what this dude is hearing is not a bass drum or a stomp box its just the sound his hand makes when he hits the string.
@johnbutler257 there's a 12 minutes version of it, recorded in a studio
im just sayin
1er comm !! !! yahou
tout bon la vid
Great comment and I most assuredly agree.
But, it is not a twelve string guitar.
He uses an eleven string for this.
the guitar he uses is a 12 string, one of the hardest to play,amazing stuff
If we ever meet aliens we should have them listen to this song before we ruin their first impression of us by talking.
I'm finding it pretty hilarious how eager the internet is to correct somebody, though.
If it's any consolation, I knew what you meant.
fucking skillzzzz A++++++++
damn i want that guitar
anyone know anything similar to it that i can get my hands on?
Do you think its possible he used sharpie or some other sort of permant ink marker on his guitar to do that? I was kind of hoping to do my own design in a similar fashion
Its definetely Open C tuning, 12 string guitar but the high G is taken off, giving you 11 string configuration.
The capo is on 4 though, so techincally someone tuned to open E could play this.
@Rochambo7 It's a g string, simple, just saying. 3rd from the bottom, in standard, it's the g string, in open c, it's still g.
ha ha. Perfect.
what guitar is he using on this recording? I don't think it is his usual one
Touché. lol
Personally, I think all his versions are nice... better than nice - kick ass!!!
watch?v=jdYJf_ybyVo That's his studio version of the song (it's ~12 mins)
Someone went a little camera happy with all the transitioning but it sounds good.
He always use Marshall amps and some Boss effects like distortion also wah wah
what if he didnt stop. what if he kept on going?
I think you would. Considering this is an eleven stringer.
he wanna add something special por the moment. something different to share with the audience, making it a more organic performance.
I'm mad also, do you love me too? :D
hahha, just kidding! He IS AWESOME!!!
that's gotta be the funniest comment on youtube LOL
actually his is an 11 string :)
11 strings dude ;) but yeah, i agree.
yea, that's what I meant.
he's an 11 stringer
@CtrlAltDaLEET LOL same here
by foot he meant his stomp box.
@jerantjor to get the sound he wants, I guess
@goalieh87 personal preference
Why does he remove the G-string? :)
but seriously?
jerantjor He kept breaking the paired G string. Eventually he removed it.
i didnt know he used the bass drum too.
forget about the fucking strings and share this music to everybody
3 people dont know what feelings sound like.
The string he removed is the highest string on the guitar, normally the highest string is on the bottom of the guitar, but on a 12 string the highest string is in the middle, its quite annoying.
