When Dick Cavett first started doing standup, he quickly learned that performing comedy yourself and writing comedy for another person are two very different ventures. In this outtake from "Groucho & Cavett," Cavett reflects on the trial and error in his early days of standup and the lessons he learned along the way.

Dick Cavett one of the best 👍🙏😊
As interviewers go, definitely the G.O.A.T.
What a great story. I’ve always loved Cavett’s sense of humour.
Thanks for sharing the experiences. I went to a comedy show that everyone except one couple was laughing horrendously, then the last person came on who was so “dry” and that one couple were the only ones laughing!
I just started to watch segments from his show, since it was before I was born. He could be fun, but mostly interesting and quite engaging. I would have though he was a journalist with a good sense of humour, not comedian. Good interviewer, and I enjoy the slower pace of his show. Quite different compared to modern ones.
Wasn't out to embarass, discredit or humiliate and was more sucessful for that.
