- Russians are voting in the final day of the presidential election with Vladimir Putin poised to clinch a new term. Video distributed by the AP showed queues at polling stations in Moscow and at the Russian embassy in the Armenian capital Yerevan. At one polling station in Moscow, Boris Nadezhdin of the Civic Initiative party called on voters to renounce Putin. “I believe that the Russian people today have a chance to show their real attitude to what is happening,” Nadezhdin, who was barred from running in the election, said.

You guys are missing an extremely important point, so I offer you my view to examine:
60% of Russians support and happily vote for Putin in every election, as do I, my friends, my family, and everyone else I know in this category. 20% of us are leftists who annoy the majority, and the remaining 20% are conservatives who are pro-some-other-party.
Thus nobody is discounting anyone because Russia is a legitimate constitutional democracy with legitimate elections and political discourse. Russians do not feel any threat for voicing political opinions either, as is clearly shown via the protests of the dissatisfied 20%. Another factual point: less people are arrested in Russia for things they say than in the UK or US, accounted for population difference. We also do not cancel each other for sharing our political views, but the 20% of leftists unfortunately do participate in this type of behavior and it annoys everyone.
As for Putin himself, he has done nothing but good for our country… seriously. Nor was he the only president, he gave his seat to Medvedev for a term because Putin was legally not allowed to run another term consecutively and thus he gave up his seat, and what did the Russian people do? They disliked the politics of Medvedev and voted Putin right back into office the very next election… and keep in mind, we all spoke about it on social media and at the dinner table and agreed to all of this… we like Putin… he is a strong intelligent and great leader who protects our country that historically has been invaded and fought for its freedom in numerous occasions and for us it’s not something that happens in the movies, it is our daily reality, we drive and walk by ruins and monuments from wars on a daily basis reminding us of the millions who perished to give us sovereignty and freedom in our fertile opportune country full of valuable resources.
We see Navalny and Zelensky as the same thing. A threat to our sovereignty. When a leader comes along who is anywhere near the intelligence and strength of Putin who represents us rather than the western corporations, we will happily vote them into power just as we did with Putin. Until that day, we will support our leader.

I also used to say "wow we have such bad problems" some years ago with a more mild authocracy. But when the institutes stop functioning, when there's a major shift to a dictatorship you start to feel the difference and value what you have (or rather had). And of course you fight for your rights in every situation. But there is so much difference between a democratic country and Russia for example.
