What is Sweet Charity (1969) about?
Shirley MacLaine gives one of her greatest performances in this spectacular musical based on Neil Simon’s smash Broadway hit. Director Bob Fosse broke new cinematic ground with this freewheeling, visually stunning story of a lovelorn New York dance hall hostess, Charity Hope Valentine, who dreams of old-fashioned romance but gives her heart to one undeserving man after another.

@@Mackdaddy4218 Come on. It took a lot of work and genius to choreograph this number. The guy was probably a mess of a jerk but he was good at his job.
I’ve never enjoyed his twitchy choreography, and propensity for tuneless songs with witless lyrics. Sammy still manages to be great, but the number is forgettable.

I wish Sammy Davis had been in more musicals.
Not only was Sammy Davis Jr. a great singer and actor, he tap danced, played the trombone, vibraphone and drums! The man had talent beyond talent!
His talent was just oozing out of him. He was a phenomenal talent. A triple threat 😊

the choir version is like, super squeaky clean and has a much different feel to it.

He was the director of our children's choir. Way back when, we sang for the President, at the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree! ...It was nice to "meet" you. Take care.

I wonder how many people realise that the form of "The Rhythm of Life" is actually a Fugue of which the great J.S.Bach would be jolly proud to have written. Not many, I'll be bound!

I was 6 yrs old when this movie came out & this magnificent song with HRH Sammy Davis Jnr singing this iconic song, & the exquisite choreography of Bob Fosse & all the dancers & incredible creative people at Universal. Oz even used this song as a jingle for Lime Fresh Soap in the 1970s. I'm now 61 & I'm still overwhelmed by the ode to late 60s hippie culture& pentecostal gurus. Thank you, Dorothy Fields & Cy Coleman!

I think it did because the ending is so depressing.
One of the best routines of any musical movie and surely deserved an Oscar. Sammy Davis Jr. is one of my favourites and surely one of the greatest entertainers of all time. It is appalling how he was treated by the prejudice of his fellow Americans.
His hipness and 60sness along with the scatting is fabu.
Unfortunately that's how it was back then. It's also why I loved how he and Dean Martin became friends

In elementary school, late 70s, we did a sanitized version of this in a chorus concert.
Hey Sandybear, Just imagine seeing this with my mom at a first run in a theater in 1969!?! It was a hoot, and we both enjoyed it all. I've never enjoyed a movie musical so much since!
I sang this song in choir in 2001. The references to “daddy” were changed, believe it or not.

I have to say that I am completely obsessed with this clip from a comic-tragic film directed by Fossey. Maclaine would always remain a fascinating person to me; Sammy jr,
one of the best crooners of his generation. He had a lot of talent ranging from famous impersonations, acting & singing but was greatly underused in the industry.
He will be missed.
When they say "They don't make them like this anymore," This is what they mean. Fosse's choreography, Coleman & Fields' music, Edith Head's costumes, and Sammy Davis Jr's everything make this incredible number unique. How would you make this today? Who would you cast? I don't know. Can you make it today?
Can we not be amazed that you have Shirley McClaine, Ben Verne , and great Sammy Davis Jr in one movie together. The talent in this movie. Chita Rivera and Paula Kelly simply out of this world talent.
There are not enough superlatives to describe just how good this is. Nuff said.
Sometimes a melody or performance just hits you hard,,, this one has always been one of my favorites. Sweet Charity is filled with great tracks,,, but Sammy nailed it with this one. Such a wonderful baritone from such a small man,,, can't not love Sammy.
How has knowledge of this film eluded me until this moment?
I gain new respect for Mr. Davis with each new thing I see. What a dynamic performer.

Nah. There was only one Sammy Davis Jr. and this was written for him. Maybe Ben Vereen (who is the black guy behind Davis), but not Prince.

This movie has not aged well but I still think that it is very underrated.

It's a document of it's own generation.
Wikipedia says that it was poorly received when it came out, but over the years has been reassessed and is now viewed much more positively.

Im appreciating this piece as a depiction of cult leadership and membership, and recruitment. The lyric is obvious, but the choreography tells an amazing story of it too. Really smart and pointed.
