This reminds me of the quote that sometimes you have to save players from themselves, because if left alone they will optimize the fun out of a game. BLSS sounds like it's very much in that category. It does something technically amazing, in the least fun way possible except for the brief lure of discovering a new trick.
Nice video. :D I knew that lots of people stopped running the game bc of BLSS and it stop me from wanting to run it again. I used to run it for fun, when BTB were the only real trick used.
Great Video! I feel what your saying. Blss has its up's and down's. I stopped speedrunning BOTW around when BLSS was found. I tried it when it first came out and yeah I could beat the plateau faster but didnt enjoy it as much, plus it wears my hand out mashing left and right like a damn mario party mini game after awhile. So after running the game for years I decided to try speedrunning other games. The biggest thing I cant stand is when I accidently go neutral in the middle of a simple BLSS. Happens to me once and awhile and MAN it sucks! Im starting to get back into BOTW recently and finally learning the ancient arrow castle route to get a sub 30.
I remember getting into speed running BOTW, I kept failing my BTB’s but when I finally got it it felt amazing. Wind bombs were also really hard to learn. I learned BLSS on my first try… BLSS is too lame.
It's actually impressive how there's so many glitches people manage to figure out in this game. I want to see you're speedrunning. I will turn into your streams.
yeah I started learning to run this game in december 2020 and had so much fun even though I sort of hated the btb to castle, cause it always took me like 10-20 tries, and it was pretty hard to even figure out why I got it when I got it. I dont remember why I stopped playing, I think it was because I had spent so much time on that btb and ganon. I had gotten plateu, castle, and blights super consistent but struggled to get much practice on ganon because I had to kill blights every time so it takes longer in between attempts, but I'd still say if I really wanted to I could have taken my main save file and just practiced ganon without the blights by replicating the weapons and armour... I think what it really was, is that I felt all my time spent working on everything after the btb to castle felt pointless cause I would spend 10-20 minutes trying to get that bounce and I probably just decided it wasn't worth my time. Now that im getting back into the game 2 years later i'm super bummed to miss out on the old plateu route with the super awesome btb strats, but also relieved to not have to do that castle bounce.... TLDR: castle bounce can be a real barrier for people wanting to get into the game, and also not fun. But without the other btbs its not nearly as exciting.
the master sword restricted category is the closest thing we have to old botw speedruns. it has tons of cool wbs and while it does have blss it feels less than other categories so i recommend it
A while before blss I learned the btb routes for the great plateau, and it is genuinely some of the most fun I've ever had speedrunning a game. Once blss was discovered I am just not interested in botw runs as a whole anymore.
Being a not so skillful casual, I still embraced the BLSS. But only for unlocking the map. But for that it’s great. It did cut down my time unlocking the map to 1.5 hours.
Good vid, and I agree. I love glitches in speedruns, but theres a limit. Ive figured out how to define that limit, for me at least. Once the controls of the base game are largely stepped away from(built in stuff like running, jumping, attacking, gliding in botw etc) thats about where I draw the line and find runs fascinating, but not fun. Like ok cool wow you can put in a random string of inputs and load into the credits of the game. woo. so exciting. Thoughts?
@@futurelander really? That seems to contradict what you said in the video. To be clear, i like stuff like BTBs, BLSS takes out a bit of fun. Clipping through a wall and having fast movement is fun, doing random inputs and magically loading a save is eh
@@futurelander i feel like theres a misunderstanding here. Im the same as you. I love a lot of glitches in runs, but they can go too fair when theyre like the BLSS, which makes it boring. Thats my stance at least. Is it the easyness of the BLSS you dont like, or the overpoweredness?
nah man BLSS makes it more fun imo. especially any%. castle BTB is just so incredibly annoying and inconsistent, and the other BTBs on the GP are not fun, really just frustrating imo. im more of a fan of longer cats too that normally would just be BILs around. BLSS allows for more fun routing with that. also it makes the game so much more accessible which is always good imo
From what I understand, Windbombs did more damage to Breath of the Wild by flattening variety than BLISS's because the game's movement became Windbomb to a Shrine/dungeon, windbomb through a shrine/dungeon, repeat ad nauseam.
the difference is that windbombs have variety. there are front hops, turns, midairs, square firsts, backflip, etc. blss is just wiggle every single time
You think there will be different categories (BLSS allowed/ BLSS-less) someday? Kind of like in SM64 where 70, 16, 1 and 0 star categories are able to coexist?
no. sm64 has those categories because there’s so little content in the game that they needed some way for there to be other categories besides any%. botw has many categories already
Unrelated, but from the trailers so far, it seems like speedrunners are gonna abuse the hell out of TotK lol (reverse stasis, going through walls, etc.)
Speedrunners Ironically complaining about games being run faster just seems like a core part of what speedrunnning is now. Speedrunners: "We want our runs to be faster, we need new tricks." (Someone finds new tricks that does exactly what everyone wanted) Speedrunners: "No not like that, this shouldn't be allowed, this isn't fun anymore, I'm quitting."
speedrunning isn’t always about going fast. take the master sword category for example. the unrestricted speedrun is an hour shorter yet it is less popular and less fun. fast does not equal better
as i recall, their low health points make them ragdoll more easily than other bokos, which, if you look at the hp differences between red bokos and the next level up (blue bokos) makes sense
category splits are for glitches that completely change a category, such as early master sword. a movement glitch just doesnt justify a schism. also, there isnt really anyone who wants to run without blss

Right? BLSS is boring and not really physics-based. Just feels like a corny glitch. but then again I’m not a fan of glitch heavy speedruns anyway.
