Congratulations Luke on a fabulous first light and a truly outstanding observatory ! It's incredible you're imaging from it already and producing your usual top top videos. 👏 what a feeling it must be not to have to tear down the rigs after each session and watch the whole evening from the warm room. Truly fantastic set up 👍

Hey there Paul my friend! I hope you and yours are doing well :-)
I'm totally chuffed to be in here and having fun now, completely worth all the work, money and headaches!
I have to admit to it feeling pretty much like cheating at astronomy at the minute LOL, I'm used to it being a lot of work to set up and pack down each session so this is really weird to adjust to - I roll the roof back and feel like I'm forgetting to do something still!! :-D
I'll have to do a proper tour of the place soon when my settee gets here haha!
Thanks for watching and giving a lovely positive comment my friend!

My added congratulations on getting into your new Observatory. So fun to watch you work.
I have my Evolution 6" up and running now. I'm looking forward to some warm Texas nights showing our grandsons the moon and M13.
Next project is getting a Skywatcher GTi GoTo rig for my Nikon gear. I'm buying a used D5300 for weight, DX 24mb sensor and flip out display. My Nikkor 85 f/1.8 FX lens (127mm effective fl) should provide some good amateur images, along with my FX 80-200 /2.8 and FX 300 f/4.

I'm extremely pleased that your Evo 6" is up and running, I'm sure your grandsons will enjoy seeing some of the celestial wonders on offer through that setup!
It sounds like your plan for the GTi & Nikon rig are going to work great, - I wish you the best of luck with it my friend!

Ya did it mate! You are truly an inspiration to all of us who love this hobby. Your observatory is hopefully the beginning of many, many Lukomatico videos to follow. As one other commentator mentioned, we who have followed you on your journey shall miss the old kitchen chair. Anyway, heartfelt congratulations-job well done.
Can’t wait for you to begin imaging at f/2 with the Rasa. With nebula season about to begin…your Rasa should rock the heavens!
One thing about your videos, you always offer insight into the intricacies of this hobby so often glossed over by other videos, For example, in this video you mention your target ‘drifting’ and the occasional need to center it. Would love for you to explain this a bit further, I always thought that was because of my mount’s shortcomings.
Let me just say that your videos and your observatory are for all of us who follow you. So thank you for inviting us inside the Lukomatico studio/observatory.

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico  2 роки тому +2

Hey there Joe!! - It's great to hear from you my friend, genuinely :-)
As always, reading and digesting your lovely comments lightens my day no end! Thank you for taking the time to give such thoughtful replies!
RE: target drifting, good catch! I'd be happy to elaborate :-)
Under normal imaging conditions if you were to image unguided then it would be expected that your target would steadily move around the frame, or maybe drift off the frame entirely eventually - this is commonly just down to periodic error in the mount and minor mis-alignments during PA.
If however you use autoguiding then your target should stay centered indefinitely, with only very minor movement around the center of the frame being expected, again due to unguidable periodic errors.
In the final instance however, the one you see in this video where you are autoguiding and choosing to "dither" your exposures, then over time as the amount of completed dither commands throughout the session builds up this can lead to some notable "drift" of the target, this is entirely acceptable and indeed desirable as the minor misalignments between your frames during capture under these conditions is what stops pattern noise from ever having the chance to build up and dominate an image when ultimately stacking the data!
      I hope that helps mate!!
I can't wait to share so much more with everyone, we're on this ride together haha!
      Clear skies buddy

    Hey Luke my friend.
Love how you said it took a while in your description. You built the oby in record time.
See you built one of those piers you were on about the other day. How is it? I found the other day it was a lot less work to set up, even though my pier and oby is not fully operational yet.
The whole set up is looking fab mate and the warm room is a great touch too.
As always enjoyed the video. Can't wait to see more of the new cam, and a very nice image you got from it as well.
    Hopefully speak soon buddy!

I think it's easy to lose sight of how quickly things have moved on when you're seeing it every day, I felt like I was getting nothing done sometimes but then I'd look back to pictures from 2 days ago or something and realise I'd done loads haha 😅
I'll have to do a video on the second pier, it should be pretty interesting to see what people reckon! :-)
As always, thank you for watching and giving your time and support my friend!
Best of luck with the next parts of your obsy build and huge congratulations on 500 subs!! 🎉🙏

Yes, it was clearly visible through the video you really enjoyed the new asset to your astro setup. Great result also!! I was closely watching the system time and also you mentioned the current time in your last section of the video at dawn. Man, how do you manage to keep awake during that night hours? Re: your question about stacking the stacks, - you're exactly right mate, you can take those 10 minute accumulated live-stacks and load them all into your stacking program of choice, treating them as if they were natural 10m subs 👍

Did you take your sleeping bag and sleep in it the first night it was complete ? Me being from Old Lumber back ground....I know I would've. 😆

I hope you and yours are well my friend 👍👍
It's really wonderful that you've noticed the change since my channel began, that means a lot to me Mike :-) I was reflecting back just the other day on how much better life has became since starting UA-cam, I'm so thankful I began but more than that, I'm thankful to everyone for being so fantastic since the very beginning! :-)
The pier has turned out great by the way, I'll be sure to film the creation of pier #2 and share it with others because I'm really happy with it 👍
Re: sleeping bag, I'm ashamed to say I've not spent the night in there yet haha! I will be doing very soon though, quite excited for it actually :-D
As always, thank you for watching and giving your support my friend!

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico  2 роки тому +1

Hey there mate! :-D Great question!! My gut feeling is that the coma corrector is still an advantage even with a smaller sensor and at f4.7 like my 250pds, if you were maybe using an f4 newt then it would be a must-have, 100% - on the other hand, if you had a slower newt at maybe f6+ then you might just get away with it.
      I hope that helps!
Thank you by the way, I'm real happy to hear you are enjoying seeing the obsy in action!

Hi Luke, I am another one who loves your videos. Wow what an observatory set up you have, I am completely envious. Beautifully constructed. As you go through your videos using your Skywatcher 250 I keep freezing the video so I can inspect your setup. I also have a Skywatcher 250P but I did not think they could be mounted on a normal EQ mount (albeit a big one to handle the weight), due to issues with the mirror collimation. I really only use mine for some planetary observations since I shifted over to my two refactors. You may have done a complete video on this Skywatcher setup but I can't find one, could you please describe your setup? It looks to me that everything is fairly normally set up, but there are probably a lot of issues in getting it right, would love to learn from your experience. Is the mount an EQ6 or bigger?

    • @lukomatico
      @lukomatico  2 роки тому +1

Hey there Ray! - I'm so happy to hear that you like my videos, - thank you my friend! :-)
Regarding the scope - From what you mentioned in your comment here it sounds like you are using the Skywatcher 250p on a Dobsonian mounting currently? If I'm correct in this assumption then it does alter your path forwards slightly when compared to my own setup, nothing insurmountable though!
If indeed you do have the 250p Dob, then to use it on an equatorial mounting platform you would need to get appropriate tube rings and a dovetail bar to connect the rings, scope & mount together.
The next question would be if your 250p is a newer model or an older one - the reason this is important is due to the older scopes being fine for afocal projection photography, but unsuitable for prime focus photography due to a slightly long tube, meaning you can't get enough inward focus travel without moving the primary mirror up the tube a bit to push the focal plane out of the drawtube further!
Those are the main points for your consideration I'd say, it's up to you to decide if the cash invested into converting the Dobsonian mounted newt over would be worth it over perhaps just keeping your eye out for a "PDS" style OTA, which comes ready to do prime focus photography right out of the box (with appropriate mounting!)
I hope I haven't misinterpreted your message, my apologies if my assumptions are way off the mark about your setup Ray!
RE: mounting, the one you see the scope on in this video is a SkyWatcher EQ8, - the 250PDS can indeed ride on the smaller EQ6, but it's honestly right at it's limits for deep-sky photography with that sort of payload, the EQ8 is a better fit for such a sizable scope, but is also a lot more expensive and heavy to move around for non-permanent setups!
As a bit of a general note on using reflectors for imaging, I do really enjoy their performance and the "bang for buck" is unbeatable really but you are absolutely correct to expect that there are many issues getting one working at peak performance, accurate collimation is easy enough with experience and quality tools, but it's still a task which will need continual completion, normally before every session if you don't have a permanent setup! - if this is something you are happy to undertake then it's no issue, but if you feel that this would wear thin on your patience over time then it may well be worth considering alternative scope designs. (refractors generally, great to hear you already have a pair!)
aside from the mechanical issues, there is also the problem of physical size itself! the scopes are large so catch a lot of wind, end heavy (usually mirror cell end) and hard to fully balance because of off-axis weight, like the guide-scope for example.
A final consideration is that they leak light generally, as in external light sources, such as local lighting from your own home or garden, or neighboring gardens can infiltrate the scope and wreak havoc on your photography! - if this sounds like it would be a problem then you also would need to prepare for a pretty thorough job of blocking up all the common "leaks" - rear mirror cell opening, rear mirror cell-to-tube interface, around the edges of the drawtube and straight down the end of the tube :-)
I realize I've gone on at-length here, so to wrap up I would like to add that I don't say any of this to discourage you from Newtonian usage, merely to help you avoid all the pitfalls I fell straight into LOL!! :-) They are wonderful scopes when set-up and running sweet, but it does take some work I can't lie.
      I hope that helps you!
Thanks again for watching and commenting :-)

@@lukomatico Hi Luke - thanks for an excellent and detailed description of all the issues, I have not seen these stated so comprehensively previously, and your description certainly clarifies for me the direction I need to head. I started a couple of years ago with the Skywatcher Dobsonian on an Alt-Az mount and quickly moved up to a William Optics ZenithStar 80mm f/6.8 ED Apo Refractor (EQ5 Mount), and then recently moved again up to a William Optics Fluorostar FLT 156mm air-spaced Apo triplet refractor (EG6 mount). I have all the accessories for both scopes mostly ZWO (EAF, EFW, ASI Air Plus etc) and have recently upgraded the FLT156mm to Antlia narrowband filters. You are right the Dob is a 250P, and I have been entertaining thoughts of upgrading it and fitting it to an EQ8 mount. While the 156mm is outstanding and much better for galaxies, it is still too small for most of them and I think now I will head towards a Celestron HD Edge 11" to satisfy my desire to get better FOV for galaxies. Thank you again for your fantastic help, really looking forward to more vidoes!

    • @lukomatico

Hi Ray! - I'm genuinely pleased to hear that you found our communication useful and it means a great deal that you'd get back to me to let me know it was, too! :-)
I have to say your Fluorostar 156 is a real dream scope, what a wonderful piece of equipment that must be to own and use! - I would expect very nice galaxy results from that if paired with a small pixel camera!
The EHD11" is a superb scope by all accounts, I owned it's little brother at one point and very much regretted having to part with it! Great build quality, wonderful to use & very stable regarding collimation, a real galaxy buster too if you could pair it with a camera that has nice big pixels (or binning) to get appropriate sampling ratios - I think that's a great choice if a bigger scope is on your purchase horizon! (I'd love one myself someday!)
Thanks again for getting back to me Ray,
All the very best and good luck to you my friend!
      Luke

    • @lukomatico

Heya mate! - The difference between the two is deeper fullwell capacity on the Uranus, 2x larger sensor area and zero amp glow on the Uranus too - plus a small advantage in that it has the inbuilt passive cooling heatsink which the Neptune does not - but on the flipside, the Uranus costs more money! :-)
Both are great cams for their intended purpose in my opinion :-)
