    Over here in Cape Town, South Africa, I started an urban homestead, back yard square foot veggie patches except one patch that's just for sweet potatoes. In my front yard I have a very neglected food forest that when spring comes I will attend to that.

    So many great points. I love the idea of a rambling wall of berries! And I just love all the kid friendly zones.

      I need to add some more berries, the kids eat them so fast we barely get to save any

    There are edible flowers such as calendula, nasturtiums, lavender, dandelions, etc. so you can still create an all edible garden

    I live in South Australia and apparently it is illegal to catch water in buckets here as well!! But its not an "enforced" law...and I've had noone come and police it so.....water caught in buckets it is!! LOL!!

    I really enjoyed this video. I’m in east central WI so it’s nice watching videos with a similar climate/growing season. I’m in zone 5a. Thanks for sharing. I’m just starting my urban homestead journey 😊

    Love this so much. I'm in Ohio and i have yet to see any urban homesteaders here in Toledo and in my zone. But Michigan being our neighbors with similar zones and weather patterns is really inspiring. Great tips. Thank you!

    Rainwater is life for us. Urban homesteading here in South Africa. We aren't alowed to use municipal water on the garden due to drought. We have just put down wood chips and also deep bedded the chickens for composting. Thanks for this video🤗. We are also vlogging our journey although it seems South African Channels don't get that much exposure 🤔💚💚

    Hi, I just found your channel and I'm now a subbie :) . I'm trying to get more sustainable and doing some urban gardeing in my townhouse in the middle of the city with a supersmall garden :) . Going from a luxury shopper to a more minimal sustainable lifestyle. I'm so happy I found you. All the best, xx linda

    Love your hedge and the privacy it provides! You all so so much with your lot in the city. I miss some serious benefits to gardening in the city; we had far fewer critters and pests to contend with.

      We still get a few critters but yeah there is a bit less and no deer. Having the fence line all green is one of my favorite things

    Great video! So many great points! You really have me really thinking about beekeeping too. Collecting rainwater is actively encouraged where I am (south Florida). It helps minimize the use of city water for landscaping & growing purposes. We are VERY close to our aquifer, so we have to be very careful with how we use water too.

    • @Citystead

      Beekeeping is a lot of fun. I've had some struggles but their doing good now and I feel better about it. Very cool that they encourage rain water collecting

    I recommended rabbit manure! It's not hot and you can add it directly to your garden. Rabbits are probably one of the best animals to raise for meat in small spaces as well.

    • @Citystead
      @Citystead  4 роки тому +2

      I have done a ton of looking into meat rabbits. My problem is just not having the time to take care of anything else right now

    • @carimartinez6779
      @carimartinez6779 4 роки тому

      I’d love rabbits for garden manure (not meat), but I’m afraid it’s too hot for them outside down in south Florida.

    I live in the U.P. Only been here a year. I'm hoping to buy the house I'm renting someday. We get deer, here. How can I keep them out of the garden; and, what might I plant to share with the wildlife (deer and squirrels?

    Rain catching is illegal in some places because of drought and generally dry climate. Taking that rain water can throw off the growth of much needed vegetation and also make the area more prone to wild fires.

  • @inkscars6380

    Can you use water from rain water off a normal roof I was worried about the shingles…

    • @Citystead
      @Citystead  2 роки тому +1

      I only use mine for watering plants. I'm not sure about using water runoff from shingles for drinking. Even if you had filters I'm not sure how good it would be.

    • @inkscars6380
      @inkscars6380 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I figured that but would it be harmful to the plants, I would figure it would have some sort a effect?

    Bit worried about your bees. In June, they should have been really active,. Had they swarmed

    • @Citystead
      @Citystead  3 роки тому

      Good noticing, I did have a swarm it was a bummer but something to learn from. The hive bounced back and did really well the rest of the summer.

    • @terryphillips4070
      @terryphillips4070 3 роки тому

      @@Citystead . Yes. That's a shame! They would have taken about 15 lbs of honey with them as they swarmed. Been there. Done that. Look into chequerboarding for the future. It seems to work well if you do it at the right time. Get more equipment and think about it!! Don't forget the bees haven't read any of the books so they can be quite unpredictable.
