This is actually a really old video. I own the lot next to me now also with the barn on it, so we have about 1/4 acre now. I put a large garden and a small food forest on that property since then.
Thanks You inspired me to develop my backyard even more! There are a lot of deer in my neighborhood and I have learned not to try any edible plants in my front yard. I put up a high cedar fence in the backyard and they don't jump the fence so I just have rabbits, possum, rats and raccoons to deal with. Half my yard is raised beds now and I am going to get 4 chickens this year. Slowly but surely I have created an urban homestead all by myself.

It's the Garden of Eden in the middle of a neighborhood. I'm amazed at how much you were able to plant in such a small area. Truly an inspiration to anyone who thinks they don't have enough property.
Pete Moss is good to add to alkaline soil to make it more acidic. I'm also trying to use liquid plant food made for plants that require more acidic soil. Just started that don't know if it will work.
Try adding diatomaceous earth also called DE to the soil of the beds. You can buy a little puffer to put it in and puff it on the leaves. Not toxic to people or animals but dries the insects and they die. You could use when you first start to see the bad bugs. It is a white power so you will see it on your plants and you need to wear a mask while applying it because it can get into your lungs and cause irritation. It is used in grain silos to keep bugs under control. If you have a animal feed store you can buy it in 50 lb bags. You can find smaller amounts at garden stores or Home Depot or Lowe's in smaller amounts. BUT BE SURE it is just DE WITHOUT pesticides added. They are sold that way also. Unfortunately it will kill good bugs so use it only when you see the bad. It also needs to be reapplied after it gets wet or rains.

I remember thinking that "We need land so the kids can stay busy with gardening and taking care of animals and such. Learning how to grow food, work hard, and gain sanctification by helping provide for much of their own needs." We could have been doing this all along. I've always had a garden of some type going on but I could have done so much more. Better late than never. My grandson will benefit and my grown kids and the teenagers will at least get a first hand view of what can be done.
I saw some pots you sit on the top rail of your fence. That might help you plant even more, but woah! You got a lot going on I. A small place. So nice! Those trees on the south side will help with shading your house too one day!
That was a fantastic tour. I love how everything looks so naturally place and landscape but totally edible. Hopefully many more property owners in urban and suburban settings will use our food forest garden spaces to inspire them to transfer their’s also.
I am enjoying your tour of your permaculture garden. If the pest are bugging you-lol- don't forget to plant some peppermint and you will have a sustainable source of pest control for as long as you need. Neem and tea tree oils are also effective with NO echo or personal side effects. Yahshua's best to you.
I like how everything is so well integrated into the landscape. Nice visual design too. And, every square foot is used ideally too. even the 1 ft right outside the greenhouse, never seen that before. :)

The hidden livestock shed was nice! We’re dealing with the same in our development. I just rebuilt a log barn with a tall roof though so hopefully that will block everything from the nosey neighbor that lives above us. 😏😁👌
I enjoyed the tour! We've had Japanese beetles too and have had some success with neem powder sprinkled onto leaves when the dew has set (so it will stick). We have mulched our blueberries with wood chippings which included a lot of pine bark and needles. I also gave our blueberries a dose of sulphur last year. Love that you're using so much comfrey and also allowing some weeds to grow and feed you (purslane, etc.). Love how much you're doing on your land! Great video!

Just found your channel and only 5 minutes into the video and I am IN LOVE. I have a very small backyard and no front yard-plus my house is joined to several other ones, and I am all about edges and small possibilities! Although I am looking for land near family, I have learned from other experiences in life that, time continues to fly by while you wait for ideal circumstances. (example we have been waiting for our adoption to be complete to become parents and enjoy our home/life for 6 years.) ANYWAY your voice, your vibe, and your side lot make me feel like Im visiting a friend and getting garden inspiration. After living where I am for 4 years I really like a fenced in space with little edges, corners, patches, borders, and i love how small spaces make me get creative about layering and going vertical etc. I think of my yard like a quilt or a collage in the layout. the edges and corners concept still makes it feel spacious, but maximizes the limited space. does anybody know how to keep gravel weedfree? we have a small gravel firepit area we struggle with. cant wait to check out the rest of the video, channel, and podcast!!
the squashbugs completely dominated my pumpkins last year I was devastated! i never stood a chance but did get rid of them although it was too late. im ready for them if they ever show their faces around here again. !!
the secret rabbits in the lean to! genius! i see my future! now, where can i hide an alpaca?? just kidding. :) altho right now im trying to construct a secret shelter for feral cats because we already have more pets than allowed. ! trying to disguise it with plants and trellises

D>d you know comfrey is very medicinal ! The root made into a poultice is an excellent cell proliferate .I think what you've done is an excellent idea...saves money....and if you can your tomatoes n fruit .. a very easy process ,...you can have fresh fruit n tomatoes in the winter ! Yum Oh I forgot comfrey leaves dried and lit like tobacco inhaled is very healing for the lungs ! Haa sorry, I started typing before I heard you do can ! I just love what you've done with your yard !
That was great! I got a lot of inspiration because my lot and house is almost exactly like yours in size and layout. I've done something similar with espaliered fruit trees (citrus, olive, avocado and apple) along the perimeter of my lot fence line and veggie beds in the center. I plant butterfly garden and herbs in the front yard. But the yard is so tiny that I have a bit less grow space than you. There is literally about 5 ft between the public sidewalk in front of my house and my front porch steps and I'm looking forward to putting in a picket fence there one day to make more of a divider between people walking by and my yard. I too have situated the area for my animals (will have chicken coop and run) between garage and fence. I love how you made that walkway along the south side with all the areas lined. I'm going to copy your idea there and plant comfrey at the base of my fruit trees. Great idea! My main issue/limitation is that my neighbors houses are literally 2ft (the neighbor on my east side) and 6 ft (neighbor on my west side) from my fence line so I can't really grow trees on my lot because they will hang over their homes. I had a pecan but had to cut it down as it was hitting my neighbor's roof. :-( So I am trying the espaliers on smaller fruit trees instead. It seems to be working so far.
I switched to Italian flat podded pole beans because I like the flavor better. Still plant purple pod bush beans. They are, maybe, a bit less productive than green but the kids pick them and purple pods are easier to see.
Use diatomaceous earth on plants that get beetles. It works you just got to use a lot and it’s safe stuff. I use food grade so it won’t hurt to eat it. Great garden. 👍🏻🖖🏻💪🏻❤️🌱

Baby powder helps with Japanese beetles and I believe Squash bugs. Squash bugs are not big fans of zucchini. I love your set up. It is visually appealing and productive.
Do you remove dying leaves to keep the strain off your plants? You’ve done a great job using all your available space . Your plants look like they’re very happy where you’ve planted them. Purslane grows wild as does plantain in my yard. Do you still get weeds in your beds even with the lack of grass in your garden? Just found your channel and really enjoyed your walk through. Do you start everything from seed in your greenhouse? What zone are you in? I used sunflowers as a privacy wall in one area and then to shade the evening sun on one side of my patio. Beautiful pathways! I’m trying to eliminate all of the lawn in my huge backyard. I love cattle panel arches for growing fruit and some ornamentals. Does the animal space ever have odor issues during the hot summers? I do not have animals but would like to. What are the pros and cons of raising livestock? Thanks

I want to move to the country to get away from people!!! 😄 We have a 50'x75' space to garden. The soil here is terrible and after years of trying to amend the soul, I have up and moved to container gardening.
No you can use pine bark on blueberries that's what I use on them just to let you know that but if you let chickens around them though.,they try to unroot them...
I have one of those Goji berries I didn't know they get that big wow that thing is supposed to make you live forever almost but it's supposed to help you with just about everything dietary kind of way
You will find most pellets are not treated export pellets get made to order from fresh timber leaving little time for bugs to travel with - along side other methods temperature artificial atmosphere copper is a common treatment
I just been reading CCA is not really used in pellets at lest in new zealand we may use methl bromide but even that is not common according to the manufactures website any outdoors timber is more than likely treated with copper so dont burn it
I did some amaranth the Hopi variety real blood red color it turned out pretty good but I didn't get to the time to get it down to a point where I can use the seeds kind of like chia seeds in that way and it's just like with the flaxen you can grow that stuff and you can make clothing out of that like they made back in the old days in New York just thought I'd tell you about that I do have herbs cuz I'm big into that I do believe having that around for whatever tea I like things fresh
In the pine forests of NJ, blueberries grow prolifically in the sandy and acidic soil. Your compost looks a bit too spongy for blueberries. I would amend heavily with sand, then mulch with pine needles.
Japanese beetles whatever they are or June bugs we call them down here in the south but I feed those to my chickens if you got a small fish farm you know the small one just enough to feed your bluegill.... I'm looking to see where you're worried for your comfrey plants
Or maybe you got to start feeding them to some fish that you can get couple of laying hens that don't make no noise obviously but where you live at what I mean by that because if you live in a residential area like that they may have some sort of Ordnance but I've always managed to do that wherever I live even in an apartment I had to guinea pigs and rabbits when I was younger but I didn't know you could eat them like you do today other than when I went hunting but I live out in the country kind of but I like your channel cuz somebody sent me to you and I think it's good to see people have like-minded thinking
You won’t get mulberry’s because Mulberries are male/female. You need both sexes to get the berries! Love Mulberries and will definitely be growing them one day! Beautiful garden. Thanks for sharing.
I think my next goal is going to be rabbits and and guinea pigs that's what they do in Peru they eat them but it's an animal that doesn't require a lot of work you can set up gravity-fed food grade containers out of the sun of course
And I have a thing for people who common minded like you are thinking that way growing food take your and giving kind of thinking and there should be more of us thinking this way but I like how you get it to where you end up with food just about everywhere you look I like that I have blueberries in the front yard right here in Florida I have two Plum bushes Peachtree one apple tree and somebody must have had one here somewhere in it pollinated it and it started growing apples the two of them fell off there was three turn down to one apple on that one I have a big thing for banana trees I have an avocado plant just struggling that I Grew From the seed I have a mango plant that is about half a foot high that I started from a seed... and I have a tub that you give for cattle but I fill up with the black cow and I put turmeric in it I put sweet potato in it and I got various couple other things and tomatoes heirloom in it you have a pretty much a good amount of stuff growing year-round when I have two pecan tree Shawnee pecan trees but they're not doing so good they're just getting their had a little bit of a drought then he started coming back out again so just to give you a small overview of some of what I have only have to Citrus type things which I have a lemon quat and I have a tangerine tree just to give you a little overview what I've started to put on this whole acre yes I do have chickens and ducks and things like that their my mechanical fertilizer automatic fertilizers that walk around donating to ground cover.... but I thought bed run that past you

You've really managed to pack a lot into a small space. An advantage of working with a smaller space is that it's so much more manageable.

This is a beautiful property. I was excited to find out that Hastas are edible since I had planted some under my crabapple tree!
Those were probably Beatles...my plant got about 3 ft all around and was taken down by those Beatles...I was so upset.

We just moved from a 2+ acre lot (which I actually had a lot of trouble with because there weren't edges and parameters) to being in town to a similar set up as you, and I can't wait to get started on our tiny-homestead this spring! Baby powder helps with Japanese beetles and I believe Squash bugs. Squash bugs are not big fans of zucchini. I love your set up. It is visually appealing and productive.
The squash bugs devoured my zucchini 3 years running. I finally gave up

Do you remove dying leaves to keep the strain off your plants? You’ve done a great job using all your available space . Your plants look like they’re very happy where you’ve planted them. Purslane grows wild as does plantain in my yard. Do you still get weeds in your beds even with the lack of grass in your garden? Just found your channel and really enjoyed your walk through. Do you start everything from seed in your greenhouse? What zone are you in? I used sunflowers as a privacy wall in one area and then to shade the evening sun on one side of my patio. Beautiful pathways! I’m trying to eliminate all of the lawn in my huge backyard. I love cattle panel arches for growing fruit and some ornamentals. Does the animal space ever have odor issues during the hot summers? I do not have animals but would like to. What are the pros and cons of raising livestock? Thanks

We have a 50'x75' space to garden. The soil here is terrible and after years of trying to amend the soul, I have up and moved to container gardening.

No you can use pine bark on blueberries that's what I use on them just to let you know that but if you let chickens around them though.,they try to unroot them...
I have one of those Goji berries I didn't know they get that big wow that thing is supposed to make you live forever almost but it's supposed to help you with just about everything dietary kind of way
You will find most pellets are not treated export pellets get made to order from fresh timber leaving little time for bugs to travel with - along side other methods temperature artificial atmosphere copper is a common treatment
I just been reading CCA is not really used in pellets at lest in new zealand we may use methl bromide but even that is not common according to the manufactures website any outdoors timber is more than likely treated with copper so dont burn it
I did some amaranth the Hopi variety real blood red color it turned out pretty good but I didn't get to the time to get it down to a point where I can use the seeds kind of like chia seeds in that way and it's just like with the flaxen you can grow that stuff and you can make clothing out of that like they made back in the old days in New York just thought I'd tell you about that I do have herbs cuz I'm big into that I do believe having that around for whatever tea I like things fresh

In the pine forests of NJ, blueberries grow prolifically in the sandy and acidic soil. Your compost looks a bit too spongy for blueberries. I would amend heavily with sand, then mulch with pine needles.
Those Goji berries go for about $6 a bag at the health food store here in Florida
Japanese beetles whatever they are or June bugs we call them down here in the south but I feed those to my chickens if you got a small fish farm you know the small one just enough to feed your bluegill.... I'm looking to see where you're worried for your comfrey plants

Or maybe you got to start feeding them to some fish that you can get couple of laying hens that don't make no noise obviously but where you live at what I mean by that because if you live in a residential area like that they may have some sort of Ordnance but I've always managed to do that wherever I live even in an apartment I had to guinea pigs and rabbits when I was younger but I didn't know you could eat them like you do today other than when I went hunting but I live out in the country kind of but I like your channel cuz somebody sent me to you and I think it's good to see people have like-minded thinking

You won’t get mulberry’s because Mulberries are male/female. You need both sexes to get the berries! Love Mulberries and will definitely be growing them one day! Beautiful garden. Thanks for sharing.
I think my next goal is going to be rabbits and and guinea pigs that's what they do in Peru they eat them but it's an animal that doesn't require a lot of work you can set up gravity-fed food grade containers out of the sun of course
And I have a thing for people who common minded like you are thinking that way growing food take your and giving kind of thinking and there should be more of us thinking this way but I like how you get it to where you end up with food just about everywhere you look I like that I have blueberries in the front yard right here in Florida I have two Plum bushes Peachtree one apple tree and somebody must have had one here somewhere in it pollinated it and it started growing apples the two of them fell off there was three turn down to one apple on that one I have a big thing for banana trees I have an avocado plant just struggling that I Grew From the seed I have a mango plant that is about half a foot high that I started from a seed... and I have a tub that you give for cattle but I fill up with the black cow and I put turmeric in it I put sweet potato in it and I got various couple other things and tomatoes heirloom in it you have a pretty much a good amount of stuff growing year-round when I have two pecan tree Shawnee pecan trees but they're not doing so good they're just getting their had a little bit of a drought then he started coming back out again so just to give you a small overview of some of what I have only have to Citrus type things which I have a lemon quat and I have a tangerine tree just to give you a little overview what I've started to put on this whole acre yes I do have chickens and ducks and things like that their my mechanical fertilizer automatic fertilizers that walk around donating to ground cover.... but I thought bed run that past you
