  • In this inspiring talk, model Iskra Lawrence asserts that we all need to be taught how to look after ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally and encourages us to invest in ourselves right now. She gives examples of self-care techniques like the mirror challenge and the gratitude list that work for anyone, any age, anytime. If we learn self-care and practice self-care, then we can gift self-care to others.
Iskra is a British model represented by JAG models in the Americas and Models1 in Europe. A champion of body diversity, Iskra has long been committed to improving the image of women in the media, having been told she was both “too big” for straight-size modeling and “not big enough” for plus-modeling. Iskra is committed to posting unretouched images on her social media channels and has launched her #IskrasArmy campaign to introduce compulsory self-care education for boys and girls in UK schools.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I had a food and nutrition class and one of the assignments was to go stand in front of a mirror, jump around, and see if anything bounces where it's not "supposed" to.... no body did it because they were either ashamed or thought it was a compete waist of time. We were 15 years old and that is honestly so irresponsible to tell children skinny is healthy.

For those of you criticizing her for being a model or wondering her credibility, her credibility lies in her popularity as an Aerie model with a curvier body. Personally, I think it's an important conversation to have and she is a great candidate to enforce the one sided media image we are shown because she represents a strong, athletic, woman's body. She's young and beautiful, but understands her popularity and decided to do something with it, which is commendable. As a person who has struggle with body image and eating disorders, I applaud that she encourages working out, eating healthy, and self-care. I don't think the point of body positivity is to encourage obesity, but to say that you need to love yourself no matter where your body is. After all, hating yourself, if you are obese, is most likely not going to lead to healthy weight loss. We need women to value their bodies and feel beautiful. We need men and women to feel this way. Underweight/overweight people need to love themselves or they will never reach a healthy weight. It's about enjoying life.

I think this is why I admire this woman so much. Notice how in her speech it's not just all about women's body issues...she also includes boys and men. Almost every plus sized female model who does interviews or speeches, totally ignores men's issues and only focuses on females. Like she said, we got guys killing themselves down at the gym lifting heavy weights and abusing roids. It's true, and I have witnessed this first hand. What a truly beautiful person Iskra Lawrence is.

"Being healthy" seems to be the usual catchphrase, but there's a lot of chronically ill people who will never achieve that. Also the idea of "healthy" is not as black and white as most paint it as, especially not when it comes to both physically and mentally. Imperfectly you is ten times better

Iskra's speech reminded me of my aunt's words decades ago before she passed away " Girls what are you doing with that weight scale? Let me tell you a story.... a young girl came to the hospital about a year ago, she had passed out during class in school, when her parents arrived at the hospital the doctor explained their daughter was bulimic and she needed to stay at the hospital and receive 24/7 care. After six months of therapy she came back to the hospital -- she came back to thank the doctors and nurses for bringing her back from the brink. You see it's not about losing or gaining weight but about "How comfortable are you in your own skin? Own it, live it, and take care of yourself".
And auntie was the person who nursed the girl back to health. #❤you Educate yourself and others.

We need to strike a balance though. Self love is important for emotional and mental wellbeing, but that shouldn't be an excuse to continue to damage one's body through an unhealthy lifestyle, all in the name of self love. That would be a cop out and highly irresponsible. In fact if someone were to let themselves go too far, at a certain point the body becomes unable to simply "snap back" should they decide to lose all the weight (for example the problem of loose skin). Thankfully our bodies can exist within a healthy range of weight and size, so all we need to do is find our healthy range and stay within that range. It's all about treading the middle path.

    You know who pursues perfection?
    Billionaires. CEOs. World champion athletes.
But by all means, keep trying to be average.

Perfection is a moment in ⏲️time? A period of beautiful , Perfection, great ideas that want less forever 💯👌 So to make every thing and every one Perfect will lead to doomsday .Explain a rose 🌹is Perfection but dies when winter comes but a new rose will grow next spring! ... Humans need to rewrite the word Perfection. Humans should believe more in amazing 👌💯

The trick is: she acts like a non-perfect role model leader but she is perfect actually. That body is not average.

I like her accent. But wanting to improve your appearance does not mean you are "chasing perfection". Balance in everything. Make yourself better than yesterday. Work out for apperance and health, thats ok. Recognice there is no perfection and stay off social media. There saved you the trouble of listening to 15 minutes.

If you, looking honestly in the mirror, especially deep in your eyes say that you are going to give up pursuing mr. perfect and you will confirm your bonded testimony in wrighting on the front of solicitor and third party person then I will give you thumb up.

I'm sorry, but redefining the beauty ideal is also a myth. Imagine the world liking Asian features, ha! Asian noses are laughed at.
