Love the video. You may want to double check the direction of rotation on the water pump impeller. When you removed the cover the old one was rotating counter-clockwise but you installed the new one in a clockwise rotation.
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs FyI, I've read that flushing coolant is tricky to get all the air bubbles out (and avoid engines shutdowns). What I read is that you have to add until coolant comes out the bleed screw ontop the block, and also fill the reservoir to prevent air pockets. But I am not an expert and have never done.
Thanks for the information. I have a 1995 Silverton 41C with a Kohler 6.5 generator. It is currently in the shop having the engine overhauled after 287 hours due to the timing belt coming off.
Did anyone notice that the orientation of the impeller fins were pulled out as if the impeller had a counterclockwise rotation whereas when he installed the new one, it appeared as though the impeller had clockwise rotation. For those who haven’t installed an impeller before it would be nice to see the impeller Thin direction be pulled out the same way it’s being pulled in. Now I’m confused which is the right way the way that it was pulled out or the way that he put it back in?
Impellers will flip in whatever direction they need to when spinning. At least newer ones will. I demonstrated that in another video. When a motor comes to a stop, there is a tendency for it to rest in between compression strokes. Sometimes that will make the motor spin backward a litttle, causing the impeller to follow suit.
You put your new impellor in , in the opposite direction that it came out. You should have twisted it in counter clockwise to make the impellor vanes bend in the proper direction.
I've heard some say that you should dig around the heat exchanger to remove and broken tips from the zinc anode. Same goes for crusaders. Any thoughts on this?
Yes. I think I mentioned it in another comment, but I first had trouble installing the zinc. I Thought I had the wrong size as it wouldn't go in heat exchanger. Some poking around in it(hard to see underneath) I found a small nub of the old zinc wedged in there. Removed it easy enough with needle nose pliers and reinstalled new zinc with no problem.
It was lodged right in the anode port. I did not take anything else apart. Its possible smaller pieces can make it into the exchanger, but I don't expect that to be a major issue as they are small and will eventually corrode away anyway. Bits of a bad impeller however can be more troublesome as they will never corrode away.
Good Idea to replace the plastic sea pump drive coupler every 4-5 years, located behind the sea pump mounting plate. If impeller is in good shape but not pumping water, remove impeller cover and crank engine, if impeller does not rotate, this coupler has failed.
Wouldn’t hurt. I have everything open when I’m working down the of course. Hatches, salon door, etc. just be careful if you spill any to clean it up and dispose of rags properly. Fuel soaked rags left in bilge will build up quite a bit of fumes after you close it up.
Thanks for the video. Do you know how to replace low pressure pump for Koehler 5k? I tried to look online and don’t see any video on it. I am very new with boat. Thanks
Super helpful video thanks! After replacing plugs, impeller, oil and fuel filter I’m still having the same issue… after easy start the engine idles then revs up and down. Any thoughts?
Hey I have the same generator, and I had the shop winterize it but I'm wondering if I can just spring commission it myself, they said there might be a couple drain plugs to put back, do you know what those would be? By the way big fan, I've watched all of your videos I absolutely love boating and I've learned a few things from your videos. I have a 2005 Carver 36M that we just got a couple years ago.
I nearly bought your boat some years back at the NY boat show. Lol. I’m not aware if f any drains in the generator unless they pulled the zinc plug on the heat exchanger. If they just run the pink antifreeze through it to winterize there is no reason to drain anything after that. I just start her up in the spring as usual.
The sound shield was an option so I see no reason why you can’t add it. You may have to remove the entire generator however to install it. The only performance difference is quieter operation. :)
I have this same generator on a 2003 Carver. There's an oil leak 'somewhere' that causes oil to collect on the top in the spark plug well. Where would it be coming from? thx.
Check that it’s not oil spilt over from oil fill tube. The tube is also plastic so it can crack or maybe loose bolts/bad seal causing oil to leak out. Also check the plug tightness or replace the spark plug with new and torque correctly. A loose plug can cause oily buildup from blow by. Worst case is a blown gasket on head.
I neglected to perform that maintenance in this video. There is no air filter. There is a backfire flame arrester similar to the one on boat engines. That should be checked and cleaned every 100 hours or so. It is attached to the throat of the carburetor on the top left side of motor (must remove sound shield to get to it). Clean dirt, oil, grime from the flame arrester with an evaporative solvent/degreaser. I’ll include that in another video! Thanks for watching!
hi what model of fuel pump I can use for replacement?? (I guess mine is down since its just cranking and not starts an I already replaced spark plugs) Also thank you for this video BEST MANUAL THAT I FOUND FOR MAINTENANCE!!!
You should go through troubleshooting before replacing the fuel pump. There are various sensors that may shut the engine down. Are you sure you are getting spark when cranking? Check all fluid levels (oil, coolant, gas levels in tank). Some gens won’t run with less than a quarter tank of gas in the main engine tanks as a safety precaution. Your fuel filter may also be clogged. Carburetor jets may need cleaning, choke not working correctly, bad gas, etc.
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs got it thanks for advice, full tanks (main engines runs great, checked all fluids has good level) not sure if I have spark but I'm assuming when its cranking for long time and not starting spark plugs will be wet from gas if fuel pump works right? Also when I tried to replace anode, only same small part came out (plug same as on video) but cant fit new anode with tall side on it its weird
With the anode, look up in the heat exchanger where you screw in new anode. The old likely broke off and is lodged in the port, keeping you from replacing with the new longer one. Same happen to me. I found a small piece stuck in there and removed with long nose pliers. All was well after that.
I can’t speak from experience on diesel motors. The routine maintenance would be similar except for the spark plugs, as a diesel doesn’t have traditional plugs.(some may have glow plugs which just warms the diesel before starting.). Zincs, impeller changes, oil and filter changes would apply.
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs thank you for that because mine i didn’t start it up for 8 years thats why i wanna do service maintenance on it first and I noticed the sea water valve was closed maybe the cooler is stuck with seashells
Before starting that, you should change oil, filters and install new raw water impeller. At least. You may have some rust in cylinders and may need some additional prepping prior to start
