    A clove hitch is fast, but also the number one reason fenders are lost while the boat is unattended because any movement and jostling can work the knot loose.
    When leaving the boat for longer periods, and especially if the boat is moving around at the dock, use a round turn and two half hitches.

      Yes, I saw a fender that was tied with a clove hitch, fall off the lifeline before we could remove it ourselves, then it was COB! Now I add an extra half hitch or use a round turn and two half hitches!

      If you don’t finish with a hitch around the waited piece of rope then you haven’t done the knot correctly! No way in hell is it going to come undone! Been using rolling hitches for 50+ years commercially fishing! Some or should I say most people have no idea on things boating and should stay as far away from water as humanly possible!

    I only use the quick release hitch on the boat fenders and all the ladies bikini's. When we get away from the dock, I quickly remove them all, no need for the fenders, or bikinis.

    I do clove hitch with a slipped halfhitch next to it on the rail, while approaching the dock.

    On that slipping clove hitch, shoot through the I with the end of the line to prevent someone slipping it

    Love clove hitch but I put half hitch on rail with loop, so if line is pulled accidentally finder won't be lost overboard in wake!

    Better to finish the clove hitch with a half hitch else risk losing fenders in choppy marinas.

  • @GregoryLongs
    @GregoryLongs 3 роки тому +3

    In my opinion, if you're adding hitches to the cleat, go ahead and add your half hitch to the clove hitch. I would never be so pressed for time that I used just slip Clove

    On the slipping hitch I put the loose tail through the loop so there is now way the knot can be accidentally dislodged but everything is still able to be speedily removed

    0:28 what are you going to do if docking line already attached to this cleat? for example in small boats you have to share cleat.

    • @RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland
      @RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland  3 роки тому +3

      The small pop up cleat used the video is intended to be only used for the fender and is not rated for mooring.
      If on your own vessel you need to share the mooring cleat then we would recommend you set your fender on the cleat first at the correct height and then the mooring line can be attached or removed as required without being obstructed. If the cleat has a mid-section gap use the demonstrated knot on the bow rail to attach the fender to the cleat. That will help keep the ends of the cleat available to wrap the mooring line onto.
      Thanks for watching :)

  • @johnevans6166

    interesting demonstration. slip clove for fender agteed. the use of your cleat is comical. A cleat of any sort is full wrap with 1 complete figure 8, this is proper and will hold. If you are showing a figure 8 with 2nd wrap wrapped under in line with flow of line. NOT wrapped back on top creaking a " hurricane hitch" which when pulled tight may require an axe to get loose. If you need more secured cleating. Wrap line around cleat 2-3 times than a standard figure 8. Dont believe me try, this method is not only safe, able to get undone quickly but will hold tonnage.

    • @TheDivegeek
      @TheDivegeek Рік тому

      Fender lines don't need to hold tonnage, but I also wonder why you wouldn't just use a standard cleat hitch (full wrap or half wrap). It seems faster and easier then threading the line through the center of the cleat.

  • @randallmacdonald4851
    @randallmacdonald4851 4 роки тому +1

    What would be wrong with a taut-line hitch? It's adjustable! Slip it for adjusting and a quick release but not for security. Don't slip it, make an extra turn or two and follow it with a figure-8 for security and only a moment or two to adjust it.

    Clove hitch, slipping close hitch yes.. pop up cleat .. wrong.... a simple cleat hit comes off faster and less likely to jam

  • @atroby91
    @atroby91 5 років тому +3

    The proper way to dress the clove hitch is to continue around the bar at the end, not leave it hang down. 😬

    • @ushi120
      @ushi120 2 роки тому

      Sorry buddy, but you're dead wrong. Who taught you this bs?
      If you continue around the bar with the end, it doesn't matter if it's a Clove Hitch with or without Slipknot.
      By doing this you are interrupting the function of the Clove Hitch. the Clove Hitch will slip under load.
      Please try it yourself with a Fender and share your new experience with us.

    clove hitch really is a bad knot for fenders. ones it is tight it is over (Just a matter of time if fenders are working)

    • @RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland
      @RMarineJonesRivieraQueensland  4 роки тому

      We have found it is a simple knot that can be learnt easily and with the way it gets used on our recreational boats we very rarely see issues with the knot getting too tight to untie.

    if you think thats how to use a cleat ,,, keep at it , on toy Tupperware boats it may be fun , in the real world its about as funny as the coils that people make out of rope on the pontoons.
