Deep observation. Now a days, no one has patience with their "loved ones" anymore. If things don't go their way or the person is going through hard times, it's bye bye real fast. It's as off people don't love as deeply as they used to.. I don't know....
@@volb9817 It's probably true, that people don't love as deeply as they used to, so to speak. Nowadays with social media, tinder, etc. people's friend groups and dating choices are much bigger, so if something gets hard they can just drop someone and move on to someone else. That also makes friendships and relationships more superficial.
The problem is, Lizzie (can I call you Lizzie?) is that I seize every oppurtunity to feel morally superior to others, and if I can Lord something over someone then it helps to heal the hurting that is going on inside me. I would totally use this oppurtunity to build myself up by tearing Shawn down. Not only that, but I would use his treatment of his girlfriend as an excuse to be violent towards him under the guise of 'outrage' or 'wanting to protect her'. The reality is, is that I do not care for anybody else other than myself and seek only to mould others perception of me to my own benefit.
I love how when Corey asked to go after Shawn, Feeney let him go no questions asked. He was irritated as a teacher of course, but knew Shawn needed Corey.
That speaks volumes about Mr. Feeny as both an educator and as a human being. Yes, he was mad at the moment, but he also knew that that wasn't who Shawn really was, and he knew that if anyone could get through to him, Corey could. He cared enough about his student to let his friend reach out to him.

Congratulations on 7 years. Its crazy how wrapped up one can become on drugs and not even realize it. Sometimes all it takes is that one person or that one word to snap you back to reality.
Don't drink alcohol in order to become popular or to drown your pain. Those are fake friends, you don't want to be around those people. Drowning your pain isn't good.
Your words described something like: if you only drown your pain. That pain could only resurface again later. And if you keep using the same strategy of just drinking to always make the pain go away temporarily, then that person will only “fill the ocean” with seas of trouble because of alcohol.
"How did that just happen" Kills me everytime. One of the most painful things I've ever experienced, is becoming sober and realizing how much damage you really do to the world around you
Boy Meets World knew how to tackle real life problems. This episode is one of the best ever. Handled brilliantly. It brought out some of the best performances out of all the actors.
I still think about that one episode where Corey thought Shawn had a girl come over to his place but it was revealed that he was protecting her from an abusive relative and they handled the situation in that episode well.
@@notimeforjokes.3570the point wasn’t for this to stop people from drinking. But it did illustrate the reason teenagers drink and it did it in a pretty realistic way considering it was a family sit com.

I mean to be fair, it is a realistic, if “sped up” potential real life consequence of alcoholism. And whilst this is a bit on the side of hyperbole, admittedly, it is a very effective story telling technique. Show don’t tell.
Notice how at 2:46 Shawn’s brother doesn’t straight-up fight back. He just grabs Shawn’s arms to keep him from hitting him because he ultimately doesn’t wanna hurt him. He wants to help him. Great detail.

I love this scene so much, because it taught you enough about alcohol to know Sean shouldn’t drink, teaching you about alcoholism and the genetic component, this couldn’t better convey the message ‘drink responsibly’
@Black Rhino Martial Arts are you seriously trying to say that alcohol is just as bad as heroin. They are both really bad for you, but there is a reason why alcohol is legal and heroin isn't.
@blackrhinomartialarts9298 Actually, I do know how to moderate my alcohol intake very well, because I'll have one drink once in a while when I'm going out for a special occasion, and then I'm one and done and stick to non alcoholic drinks for the rest of the night, so don't automatically assume that everyone who drinks is an alcoholic who doesn't know when to be responsible and cut it off, because that just makes you look like a condescending/patronizing jackass
The part when Angela had to collet herself before she started beating him up is what made me so scared to see Shawn actually abuse her that would be so scary and I think that if he was still drinking he could actually hurt her

This is only half true and a bit of a generalisation, if someone is going through a tough period and is generally a good person day to day but has a bad night Then offends someone while drinking it doesn't mean that is their true personality if they are a good person the rest of their lives
For the people saying that their dad is dead, I think this episode was actually before Chet had passed away. The actors may have just messed up their lines, but I’m pretty sure this episode is before Chet’s passing.
This is not before Chet died! This was the episode with Alan's birthday, when he offers to adopt the hunter boys! That's what sent sean to drinking. And later Chet appears as a ghost.
Boy meets world is by far the best sitcom to ever air. Life lessons every episode for all walks of life. I watched this show growing up every day. It really does pull on my strings man
Very good example of what alcohol will do... all it does is destroy and cause problems. "I know of lots of people who have lost everything bc of alcohol... but I don't know of anyone who has gained anything bc of it"
That actually doesn't make sense. Technically, idependent/local breweries gain a source of income from alcohol. As do bar owners and their employees. Arnold Schwarzenegger would drink after his workouts and made all sorts of literal gains. Tf
I feel like this age of children/teen’s programming is long gone. No way would they have one of the MAIN characters in a sitcom succumb to alcoholism at like 17/18 years old, physically fight with his family and friends, and shove his black girlfriend up against a wall. This is what happens in America, people should be aware of it instead of studios sugar-coating life for kids nowadays. Cheers to everyone in this show for making it one of the most memorable aspects of my childhood and growing up.
This reminds me of this one guy I dated. Thank God he never put his hands on me, but he got very verbally abusive, and he was always angry and getting into fights with everyone. He always found something to complain and argue about, and couldn't stop drinking if his life depended on it. So I ended it and never looked back since. He really thought me marrying him was going to make him stop drinking. I'm glad I'm not putting up with that anymore, but it still makes me sad to think about the future we could've had had he not been an alcoholic. But now I'll never know.
You were SO SMART! You did the right thing. I once was with someone I cared about and loved very much who also showed the signs.. and just like you he would propose and say he wasn’t drinking much. But I felt in my heart he’d never be better and I’d the the small stresses would set him off, I can’t imagine what having a mortgage and a bunch of kids would do to him. We dodged bullets babe ❤
2:02 this episode was definitely written by someone who's been around alcoholism. "Why don't you go across the street from her and cry". That was a viscous, personal, kill shot of an insult. About something you could only know because someone that loves you confided in you. And you are so numb because of your addiction you threw it in their face
This is the most real episode because I went through this as well as most my friends and a lot of us suburban kids who thought it was cool to drink and go to school and parties. Alcoholism and peer pressure is very rampant in high school. It feels like it’s something new and exciting and you don’t feel like it’s wrong AT first. I literally was in Shawns shoes AND Cory when he drank to get over the pain of not having Topanga. I can relate as well as many others.
I started drinking when I was 13 years old cuz of extreme depression I've known through out the years I have a problem with alcohol Now I have a daughter that's 4 years old and I have no interest in drinking anymore
I feel like the appeal of the show was the fact that they had times when they were all younger that the show could get serious but not often but the writers let shit hit the fan when they all got older and gave them way more challenges to face. What a show 🙌
All of them were great actors tbh. I'm actually impressed, I didn't realize how solid this show was when i was a kid but watching it as an adult it holds up so well.
@@TimedRevolver it's about influence. Yes, alcoholism doesn't transfer genetically but it can transfer in your daily life by the people you surround yourself with
Genetics exist and some people have “addictive” personalities which derive from their respective families and so yes, alcoholism works that way when you combine your genetics and environment.
The moment he realises he's going through the same process his dad went trough, and then looked directly at his brother who told him a minute ago about his dad. That just hits different...
Alcoholism runs in my family. Both of my parents had problems with drinking and sadly it led to my mother’s death. I don’t ever want to put any of my loved ones through anything like that which leads me to a quote I go by. I do drink occasionally and whenever I’m asked how I’m able to keep it under control, I say “I learned from my parent’s mistakes”. I have those who love and care deeply about me and I have my little one to think about because I’m all he has.
Both of you should stay as far away from alcohol as you can. Before you know it it could become a problem especially if it runs in your genes. Just count your blessings and find better more positive things to do. Alcohol is the gateway drug to everything. Never lose your imagination. Find something passionate and focus on that.

Shawn drunkenly pushing Angela is the kinda think you don't see that kinda thing too often in sitcoms. Most shows, especially these days, glamorize the idea of drinking
I literally took these lessons to heart. Alcoholism runs in my family to the point of violence. I'm grateful for the honesty this show portrayed. Alcoholism is not easy to get past. It's an addictive drug that changes the person like night and day. It's harder when the person appears to be fun under the influence but drinking to numb their pain. I wish more shows would be this honest.
Shawn in my opinion had some of the best performances and story arcs. A kid who didn't think he'd ever make it. Even as an adult he still kind of didn't think he would. But he did. As much as I would have loved for him to have ended up with Angela. I'm glad he found a wife and a kid that he just adores because lets face it he had a tuff life but always had his friends to help him get through it.
I was a ride or die Boy Meets World fan as a kid. Listening to this now as an adult, the dialogue is way too mature sounding for actual teens. Also, I can see that they're probably in their early 20s playing teens...classic move. Still, the nostalgia is great. I loved this bunch.
One thing about this show back in its day, it never pulled any punches when he came to serious subjects that came with serious social, personal, and professional consequences while making sure it could be watched by audiences of all ages without crossing lines that were set.
I remember at one time these shows were called sexist because the main characters were male, but growing up, it was the impact of scenes like this that made me fall for it. I watched a bit of the sequel and was stoked to see Cory and Tepenga, but it felt like a shallow imitation at best... the best friend had serious issues to deal with but instead of having a heart-felt communication like this, that might become a subplot for the next couple of episodes, they would sit on a windowsil and cover it up with a rug. So glad to see a scene like this and realize that I hadn't become jaded, but Boy Meets World is that good.
I think it’s the Disney channel tbh as much as the writing of gmw is off putting and shallow at times there’s also the vice of it being a children’s show essentially I don’t ever even recall them using the word alcohol
Boy meets world was art imitating life. Girl meets world was art imitating art. The latter is almost always more superficial and lifeless which is why so many reboots and sequels today are criticized for being worse than originals.
I don't think I appreciated how powerful this show was as a kid. The writing and characters was top level. They didn't pull any punches and trusted the audience.
My parents drank and smoke a lot before I was born but once my twin brother and I were born, it all stopped. They never drank in front of us and stopped smoking all together. No alcohol in the home whatsoever. Just because that is my history doesn't mean I wouldn't have gravitated to drinking and smoking later on in life because of curiosity. It was shows like this that reinforced the danger of those activities that led to clean living on our part. This show was INSTRUMENTAL to our upbringing.
I saw this episode as a kid….I thought it taught me a lesson…..I eventually forgot about this…..now that I’m watching again at 27. It’s made me reevaluate my life choices
You will never watch tv like this ever again... this show is honestly one of the greatest of all time. so real. so pure. So many REAL lessons. They'd put laughter over scenes as an adult....... you're like.. thats not funny. Someone needs to help that kid. Such a beautiful show. A must watch/rewatch. RIP television lol...
The thing about drinking - you don't know what its doing to you until it does & you have no control over it, it will hurt not only your family, friends also yourself, most importantly U will lose your self-respect. That's why I made a promise to myself never drink as long as I live.

That speaks volumes about Mr. Feeny as both an educator and as a human being. Yes, he was mad at the moment, but he also knew that that wasn't who Shawn really was, and he knew that if anyone could get through to him, Corey could. Your words described something like: if you only drown your pain. That pain could only resurface again later. And if you keep using the same strategy of just drinking to always make the pain go away temporarily, then that person will only “fill the ocean” with seas of trouble because of alcohol.

I still think about that one episode where Corey thought Shawn had a girl come over to his place but it was revealed that he was protecting her from an abusive relative and they handled the situation in that episode well.
Haha, ok, I’m going to say this stopped absolutely no one from drinking.
@@notimeforjokes.3570the point wasn’t for this to stop people from drinking. But it did illustrate the reason teenagers drink and it did it in a pretty realistic way considering it was a family sit com.
When he pushed Angela I remember being FLOORED. I didn’t like they made Shawn jump so drastically to physical aggression. This was so heart wrenching.
I thought it was a bit out of character, but I think they showed it that way on purpose. To show people that alcohol can change how people behave.
Even if you think someone can’t get aggressive, an alcoholic can always get aggressive. As you can see he immediately regretted it bc he immediately realized it wasn’t him But in that moment of anger it happened. Alcoholics will hurt anyone when their angry, even if sober them wouldn’t.
@@Findmeiainthiding I believe it was a subtle nod to 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree'. It was very well written.
I mean to be fair, it is a realistic, if “sped up” potential real life consequence of alcoholism. And whilst this is a bit on the side of hyperbole, admittedly, it is a very effective story telling technique.

The part when Angela had to collet herself before she started beating him up is what made me so scared to see Shawn actually abuse her that would be so scary and I think that if he was still drinking he could actually hurt her

This show is all about chasing others out into the hallway... and I love it!
