The Def Leppard cover for "On through the Night" is basically an image of "Space Truckin'.
Back in the day when I bought Lovedrive when it came out it was covered with blue cellophane. You couldn't see the cover till you opened it up. Surprise!

The man on the "Blackout" album is the austrian artist Günter Gottfried Helnwein. He designed the cover artwork. Practically a weird self-portrait. Many fans think it's Rudolph Schenker, but it is not. I love the cover to death, also an excellent album.👍🤘👍

@@dr.phibesinred6066 I thougt the same ,when the album came out. Mr. Helnwein is in Germany ,Austria and in Switzerland a well known artist. Today he is 71years old.
In the Scorps video "no one like you" , Rudy Schenker dresses up like the album cover, which I am sure reinforced peoples perception that he was on the cover..Cheers !

The self-portrait was release in a weekly german magazine named "Stern" .The band saw this Foto and they were immediatly enthusiastic .In the video Rudolf Schenker imitates Helnwein only,because it looked so cool. I have researched it, that's the facts really. Best wishes.

Not a huge UFO fan, but I always really liked the Phenomenon cover.
It's kind of strange so that fits, it's probably their best in a long line of poor front covers.
I've always disliked the cover of Phenomenon and Mechanix. A Conspiracy Of Stars is my favorite cover of theirs. Great album too for the Vinnie Moore era of UFO.
UFO has great and weird/bizzare covers... Always loved the Hipgnosis covers except of some albums on post Schenker era.

Wow, that actually seems like the thought process that was in place here... but why? Does "faucet" said with a heavy British accent sound like "force it"? Or the other way around? Does it matter? Are the women forcing it while working on faucets? It's so strange...

Another Popoff and Pardo classic....and classy. Each of you have such a positive attitude even when you are talking about matters not to your preference. So, please, do a Part 3 if you and the followers are up to it. It's great that Martin has adopted "the Chris Alo Rule" into his lexicon. While all rules are made to be broken, Chris' certainly is a great general rule for this topic. Thanks again for another entertaining show!

I actually like the 80's Def Leppard album covers... Retroactive was cool too, hahaha. I liked the logo when I was a kid because it was easy to draw.
I had notebooks full of the Def Leppard lettering from doodling during class from like the sixth grade on.

Yeah, and I love the logo. I drew it on every text book cover...loved it. I agree the band name is cheesy with the spelling and Zep take. But, too late to change it now...haha.

A lot of times if it’s a Hipgnosis cover, the band generally goes to the studio and chooses the offerings that they have in their studio or if they had the budget, hipgnosis would custom design the cover.

Love these shows. It just goes to show back in the day album covers we're designed to attract the buyer whether they were good, bad or controversial and guess what? Many years later here we are discussing them so they definitely achieved their ultimate objective.

Yesterday, when they started this, I IMMEDIATELY thought UFO & Scorpions. Love those records but some of those are real WTF covers.
Schenker standing in the middle of Obsession was always hilarious to me for some reason. He's just there, no expression.

As a guy who grew up in Germany with the Scorpions I must say I still think covers like Lovedrive, Animal magnetism, Blackout or Savage amusement are fantastic, iconic cover art. What other rock band did a better job to show the sexuality of rock'n roll on their album covers? But I agree that Virgin killer is close to child pornography and a step to far.
Some of my favorite bands of all time are from Germany, such as Can and Amon Duul II, and most of their covers are great!
It was, first and foremost a marketing ploy.
And yes, they were iconic back in the day, ie, 40 years ago. Time flies.
And the 16 year olds are 56 years of age now and evidently don't remember their puberty. :-P
Pretty sure Spinal Tap's Smell the Glove bit was based on the Scorpions.

My Mum freaked when I brought home the Lovedrive album. I was 13 and didn't know why she was so upset lol
I didn’t even realize UFO and Def Leppard had that many albums. 😂😂😂
At least UFO had some good tunes. I never could get much from Def Leppard.

Jacob Bailey that’s true, there are only 2 songs I ever liked by Def Leppard, “Bringing On The Heartache” and “Too Late For Love”. How they still sell out stadiums is beyond me. UFO are great, but I didn’t realize they have so many albums. Lol.
Def Leppard is okay to hear on the radio from time to time but I wouldn't own one of their records.
Van Halen has such a great logo yet they barely used it on so many of their album covers!
Always thought the Def Leppard name was a nice homage to Led Zeppelin.

Every time I see these album cover shows I think back to 'This Is Spinal Tap' and just one more thing they nailed in it completely. Yes please bring on round 3!
I will catch up on these album cover videos this weekend but please tell me I'm not the only one who feels KISS ALIVE! is one of the most powerful and iconic covers ever! Personally, it is THE best.

More please. It's a great trip. You try to put yourself into the era and their mindset but man the more I think about it so many bands had terrible covers.

I saw UFO in '79 and Scorpions in '80 (Animal Magnetism), I didn't realise it was that long ago!
UFO - Phenomenon...the husband is throwing the hub cap of his car up and the wife is taking the photo for the "UFO conspiracy", love that concept. check out the wheel of that car, no hub cap...., i agree with most of your opinions on other covers., infact the deal is to puzzle the listener., Pete, "bring back that monkey from heavy petting for the Monkey Puzzle"..cracked me up!! lol

As s British band, weren't all the taps on the Force It album meant to be a pun as the American word faucet sounds a bit like force-it? The pun's as bad as the cover.
Apparently those two people in the shower were MEN!
I seem to remember that they came forward recently and owned up.

Journey?? Their covers were HIDEOUS! (With the exception of Raised On Radio). And I never understood the scarab beetle thingy on all those covers.

Agree about the Scorpions except for In Trance that cover has a 70’s artsy feel like Roxy Music’s Country Life cover. You could see it hanging in a Manhattan art gallery circa 1975. Excellent presentation from Martin and yourself.

N:o 1 in this rant category has to be Black Sabbath. Only their debut and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath have cool covers, almost all other are either tacky or odd.
Gee, I think _Master of Reality,_ _Vol. 4,_ and, yes, even the unfairly maligned _Paranoid_ all have excellent covers. Really strong imagery.
Of course, from _Sabotage_ on, it's a gallery of yikes.
I like Heaven and Hell's one though.
I’d say up until Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and the Dio covers are good. Even Never Say Die is nice. The others are kind of weird and a few are bad. So if you think about it they don’t have that many bad covers
Yes, Sabotage, Paranoid, Vol 4, some of the Tony Martin's era I agree. I like the Master of Reality one, very simple but for some reason, never thought of it as a bad album cover. I also do not dislike the Born Again one, but a lot of folks seem to dislike it.

Dinosaur Jr. Great band with some album covers that should've never seen the light day. I had a friend that refused to listen to their stuff because he thought their covers were too weird and didn't make any sense to him, so he never gave the music a shot.
That's such a lame excuse for not listening haha. Bug, self titled, and you're living all over me are great covers.
When LoveDrive was advertised in the music papers of the time the cover "art" was printed in Black & White so the bubble gum and the girls flesh were the same colour. This mean that it looked as though the girls skin was being pulled off. I remember thinking at the time that this was a more disturbing and a stronger image than the bubble gum idea which is pretty juvenile.

I remember reading in Roth's book 'crazy from the heat' that Diver Down's cover was also designed for rolling spliffs on...? I adore that Fair Warning cover, there's some serious twisted shit going on:my favourite being the 'cabin fever' scene..

I never realized just how bad most of those Def Leppard album covers were/are. What a mess. And Pete is spot on with those horrible Scorpions covers. And he was right when he said some were worse than the ones he had. Yep. Face The Heat. Pure Instinct. Eye ll Eye. 🤢🤮

UFO "Headstone" compilation cover was always my fav with the graveyard background.

Spot on guys, cannot wait for part three! And would love to see albums you bought on the strength of cover alone! My first three Deep Purple albums bought, without hearing them were Stormbringer, Burn and Machinehead in the order of how much I liked the covers...! The only Scorpions album i have is Blackout - proper metal cover! Metal (or hard rock) is synonymous with the covers, of course the reverse is true too, how many never lived up to the great covers musically? Also remember hours spent pouring over the metal cover art books around in mid 1980s... honourable mention Cathederal - have all the albums basically excited by the covers with some musically better than others bizzarly the non Dave Pratchett albums just did not sound as good to me....? Thanks guys for keeping old metallers entertained - this stuff is important to us!!
When you talk about "Virgin Killers", it's not just the band if it was their idea to begin with... how many other hands in the record company did that have to pass through to get approved? Graphic designer, photographer, manager, promotional dep't, head of record company, etc... they ALL looked at this and said, "fine, go with it"...???

The UFO "Force It" album featured Genesis P. Orridge, as Martin mentioned, and future Throbbing Gristle bandmate Cosi Fanny Tutti. Great way to break into the music business.

Thanks for your brutal honesty again. It's good fun - I look forward to part 3. I quite like the 4th Van Halen album but agree with everything else. Amazing to think these big bands issued such a long string of poor album covers, no excuse considering there were plenty of iconic covers at the time.

The '70s albums were cool. I was afraid of News of the world cover. Was floored when Family Guy did an episode with Stewie afraid of it! 🤣. Must have been a common experience.
Now that I think about it, yeah they do have some pretty bad album covers.

In my opinion, Van Halen post 1984 has bad covers. Everything in the classic era (with the exception of fair warning) is a good or iconic cover

Dan Maler ding ding we have a winner! I can’t really explain it, but Van Hagar just hasn’t ever done anything for me. There’s some songs I like here and there, but overall I’m just not a fan. The band didn’t have the same sound that it had with Roth. Of course there’s a million reasons why Roth left, but sound wise, we know that Roth and Eddie wanted to go in different directions. What I think it is is Van Hagar is Eddie taking the band in the direction he wanted to go in, and Roth’s solo stuff is the direction that he wanted to take Van Halen. And like I said, I prefer Roth’s solo stuff to the Hagar era

@ They were friends with the people from Hipgnosis. One of Throbbing Gristle worked with Floyd and Hawkwind on lighting before he joined TG. They were all involved in the media prior to their musical escapades.

Guns N’ Roses had awful album covers especially Lies & Spaghetti Incident.
Also ZZ Top didn’t have many great album covers, I think there was only 3 that were decent.
Appetite For Destruction and Use Your Illusions are two of the best covers of their time. Lies isn't that bad by any means. The only cover they had that was bad was Spaghetti Incident.
ZZ Top covers are excellent. The logo is great.

Def Leppard's music IS simple, the lyrics ARE simple, in fact cheesy - so the album covers go with that. And yes, primary 80s colours for simple heavy metal. It fits like a tee.
They're not even heavy metal. It's just radio rock. At least after Pyromania. It's like Bon Jovi or Bryan Adams. And that's the only reason they had success. Radio.

Yes, I loved the cover of Lovedrive because it was 1980 and I was 16. I just hid it from mom. 😂 I still think it is a great cover , front and back!

How about a top 10 best rock album covers with Martin and a couple of the other guys.
Both Schenker bro’s bands had some naughty covers back in the day (borderline porn, just to be provocative). In Europe, it was all part of the rebel image of hard rock. Not sure our friends in North America can ever relate to that.
This one had me laughing out loud. Would love to see more. Possibly Rush, And maybe the Stones and Frank Zappa but those 2 have so many albums. But man some of those Zappa album covers OMG
@@baldersackthethird768 There's no doubt some of his album covers are amazing. One Size Fits All and Overnight Sensation come to mind. Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Burnt Weeny Sandwich or definitely 'unusual'.
i seem to remember a Def Leppard album cover that looked a little like Ringo’s self-titled album from 1973.
Animal Magnetism is the only Scorpions album cover that I think is brilliant. They were able to offend people without having anything on the cover that people could specifically put their finger on as offensive unless they were willing to admit that their mind was in the gutter. Using the Doberman without cropped ears added to the visual message because it made the Doberman look just as submissive as the woman which is a pretty difficult feat for a Doberman.
I just saw the back cover. It makes the story of the guy, the girl and the dog really funny.
I purchased that album the year it was released, at the age of 13. It was only in recent years that I realized the cover art meant something else. It was one of my favorite covers at the time. I guess my parents thought their part. Lol

I saw the one with the dog's head hidden in front of the guy's trousers. While on the front the guy is waiting for the girl's action, on the back the dog does it instead. You know what I mean... But still, are there different versions of the back cover?

With a band name like UFO it's astounding they couldn't get better covers. How do you not just get a cool painting or drawing of a spaceship? Not like there weren't tons of classic sci-fi works to choose from by that point
