No way I can support all the bands and music I'm learning about from this channel. Learning new stuff everyday..
Double albums that should be single albums. That's a great ideal, Pete!! I would just avoid to pick those late 80's/early 90's fake double albums, like: Metallica's Justice/Black Album; Maiden's Fear of the Dark. I mean, when albums have 12 songs but they are not even 65 minutes long, they don't deserve the double album stamp. For sure, lots of classic double albums fit one CD (Stones' Exile, Clash's London Calling and so on and on...), but those have lots of songs and are longer than 65 minutes. I mean, even Metallica's Load is a real double album (it's 80 minutes long), but those double albums with only 62 minutes, nah.
Humble Pie - Eat it. 4th side live was horrendous. Very short songs on the other 3 sides that probably could have been compressed into a single album.
What about a rant called "Bad Album Titles" That would also be very interesting.
Can this run to 100 parts? Very entertaining stuff guys. It's interesting to find out how much input the bands had on their image.

Very good suggestion, there are a lot of bad remasters, especially the last 10 years.
I love the cover of Dirty Work. It's so painfully 80s it hurts, but in a good way.

Christine drew the Kiln House cover art. John took the Bare Trees cover photo. The kids on the cover of Future Games were Mick s.
“Beggar’s Banquet” and “Let it Bleed” are what I would call classic album covers.
High Number Exile on Main Street is my favorite Stones album cover
I like the early Fleetwood Mac albums covers, they are unique, better than the later covers.
All the co-hosts are great but Martin and Pete together are far and away my favorite. Surprised to hear Martin’s love for the Stones Black and Blue, it’s my favorite along with Exile on Main Street. Black and Blue is usually overlooked by most people I love it.
One of the most underrated band from Germany, Bonfire. I love this band. Love to see your opinions.

The first time I went to England I went to visit the places that Ray Davies sings about in Kinks songs and it was very important for me being a huge Kinks fan to connect to those places.

When I worked at a Pittsburgh record store in 1990 a woman came up to me with the Undercover album in her hand yelling "Why are you selling porn in your store?!?!?"
Great show. Martin talks a lot about production, and in this show he refers to the later Kinks albums. Would love to see a show where you guys talk about great album production.

Absolutely Stones were the worst. Conspiracy theory they didnt want Mick Taylor on the cover.

About Goats Head Soup: I don't know why there should be any confusion about it, it's Mick and Keith's heads, floating in soup. They are the goats.
About It's Only Rock and Roll: One of the greatest album covers of all time. Mick mentions sticking a pen in his heart in the song, It's Only Rock and Roll, and you can see it on the cover, if you look closely. As a student of film, I can't help being fascinated by all the famous actresses from famous movies, with the band on the front cover. Just behind Charlie Watts and slightly to our right, holding a bouquet of flowers, is the legendary Lillian Gish, from Birth of a Nation (1915), and just behind her and slightly to our right, is Oscar winner Claudette Colbert. Those are the only two I know for sure, but I'm sure there are film historians who could identify more than me. One of the flappers behind Bill Wyman looks like Joan Crawford, but can't say for sure.

The Rolling Stones' It's only Rock and Roll-cover art was not done by a Dutch artist like Martin said, but by Belgian (Flemish) artist Guy Peellaert (who also did Bowie's Diamond Dogs).

I think the Skynnrd white bird flying through the broken fencing was supposed to suggest a "Free Bird" theme.

The interesting thing, despite their images, is that the Stones were nice middle class boys from the affluent South-East and the Beatles were working class Liverpudlians.
How about Best Outtakes from an Album? So Tracks, that weren't originally put on, but later added.
Left off Fleetwood Mac's "English Rose," which is another beauty shot of Mick. "Pious Bird" isn't that out there, because the cover with the nun holding a big white bird references the best known songs on the record, "Black Magic Woman" and "Albatross."
I find it odd that Martin slams all these bands album covers but his book covers are no better.
His Rush books look awesome. Plus album covers shouldn't be bad because most of them end up on T-Shirts. You buy a book for what's on the inside. I for one would never buy any of those Fleetwood Mac shirts if they had them album covers.
Maybe Frank Zappa should be included here. Albums like "Burnt Weenie Sandwich" definitely fit.

Popoff and Pardo again and a great show. A couple of thoughts. First, Pete, Fleetwood Mac's Mystery To Me may be my favorite Mac album. Originally bought because of the song Hypnotized but I remember thinking "Yikes!" about the album cover. And whenever it was pulled out for play at the time, my friends would go "WHAT is that on the cover?" Then as to the Chris Alo rule and pictures of the band on the album cover. That was so common on 1960s albums that it boggles the mind. The most popular might be the Beatles but that is understandable since everyone knew them as John, Paul, George and Ringo as if that phrase was one word rather than five. Enough rambling here. Great show and looking forward to the next. Thanks, gentlemen!
I was also in the back row of that Stones/Living Colour show in TO. So far away the sound was out with the video screens.

Fleetwood Mac - Very bad covers. The worst of the four here.
The Rolling Stones- As a whole below average. Goat's Head Soup, Black and Blue, and Under Cover are horrible covers to me.
The Kinks and Lynard Skynyrd covers are overall plain and average.
Nice topic as I haven't given any these covers much thought as they are just there.
Always enjoy Martin's takes.
Skynyrd's Twenty cover has a kind of Poco vibe, I think.
Inside the Goats Head Soup LP used to be a painting, showing a cauldron with a grinning goathead swimming in liquid.
Kinks covers ain't bad in my opinion.
Canibal corpse has the worst, but it's not interesting when it's done with that intention off course.

I love the Muswell Hillbillies album cover. It’s a classic old English pub scene. So British. Btw didn’t realize how awful Fleetwood Mac album covers were.

Goodness only knows what people thought about Tusk when they saw the cover, and heard the music. I quite like Mirage cover and Tango (an homage to Henri Russeau's paintings: he used to do pics of jungles, and clowns on moonlit nights etc). They look quite 'coffee table' . Agree about the rest of the covers though: from 'meh' to bizarre.
Tango in the Night, would it look good on a T-shirt? Yes, definitely.

Paul McCartney and Wings for me, especially when held up to Beatles covers or John and George's solo stuff.
On "It's only RnR" there was no band or album title on the original vinyl. "Emotional Rescue" wasn't wrapped up in a poster, it was inside the cover. "Dirty Work" was wrapped in red plastic. There were no removable stickers on "Undercover".
I'm a big Led Zeppelin fan, but most of their album covers aren't that great, the exception being the debut.
Have to agree. PG is probably my favorite album cover, though I don't think that's great either. III isn't bad.

Led Zeppelin 4 is an awful cover. Iconic now but terrible.
@@mahogany174 Not even that iconic compared to many other albums in it's league. It's just not good, that's why it's never seen on a t-shirt. I'm sure it has been put on a shirt before but I've never seen it. It was the symbols that always stuck out on the spine, I remember my dad mentioning them and said he and his friends always called the album "zoso" cause they probably didn't know what else to call it. The symbols were cool, the cover no.
Interesting what Pete says about the Kinks being more British than other British bands he loves. It's because, I think, Ray Davies was more influenced by London Music Hall (vaudeville stuff) than he ever was American Rock N Roll.
I’d put the Small Faces as the most quintessentially British bands of the 60’s. The Kinks were right there too.

The Stones’ Goats Head Soup is their best layout. The individual shots of the band are pretty weird and interesting with the lace and Keith’s being all burned up like a match. But the best part is the insert...an actual goat heads soup! How metal is that?! That thing was freaky and awesome.
The cover for street survivor was pulled days after the crash the 3 members the flames are touching are the ones that parished i used to have it on 8 track

Let it bleed cover i can take or leave.. Funnily enough was in Record store the other day with my 13year old daughter and she saw L.P. on rack and loved it so plainly it works on aesthetic level for some.
Sadly she still likes mainly musicals.
You guys should do the Elton John albums . Some really bad once there as well, except for captain fantastic I think that's a great one

It's certainly not an insult. There are quite a lot of great thrash bands and also hard rock bands. It's all a matter of taste. And taste is always debatable. And they're both metal fans.

Hmm, if you have not done it yet, and you kind of brought it up, how about Mis matched Bands playing together. Mine was Bob Seger opening for Kiss. Also had the opportunity to see Battered Wives first Canadian appearance. way before their style became "in" in Canada, not that it really did.... I warned them before hand it was going to be a longgggg short set for them, as they were opening for Triumph at a Catholic High School. Lasted 2 songs before the Food, etc. got lobbed at them, and 3 songs before the School Priest shut them down. What did they think "Battered Wives" was going to be.
I have always thought that the Cover for Rolling Stones "It's Only Rock N Roll" was one of the greatest album covers of all time. I can remember just staring at that album cover as I listen to that album.
*Tusk* is one of the few double albums I can enjoy top to bottom - but I agree the cover is terrible. "Double albums that should have been singles" is a great topic (*cough* Goodbye Yellow Brick Road *cough*).

I like the Goats Head Soup cover. I've always considered it Jagger's boiled head made into soup . (my favorite Stones album too) .
In '83 Big Country released 'The Crossing', which came in either a Red or Blue cover, I choose the Red one.

We know Chris's rule for album covers, but I'm not sure what criteria Martin or Pete use to define a good/great album cover. A natural follow-up is bands with great album covers.

It is interesting watching these videos and seeing what are to some 'bad' album covers, no opinion from me what one finds bad or good as it is subjective. However, maybe consider at the end showing at least what is a 'good' or 'great' album cover from anyone just to juxtapose and give at least a few words as to why one is good or great and others are bad. Thanks for the great content.

Martin actually got to see Angel City open for the Kinks? I saw that tour in Buffalo and we were all very excited for Angel City and then they didn't play. We got some crappy local band instead. Major disappointment. (The Kinks were good though.) I've always kind of not liked Angel City because of them skitching out on that show.

The UK LP covers up to Satanic were generally better than the US covers.
I think the Stones have about a half dozen good covers but overall I agree with Martin that their batting average is really low considering how many albums they've released.

As a high school graphic design teacher for 25 years my favorite assignment for students was to redesign album covers. Unfortunately with the slow death of the CD, that project has died as well.
I did one in college. Madonna's Ray of Light. I put an image of a sunrise on the cover. Not amazing but I liked it haha. Yes, these days of downloading have ruined album cover art.
Angel City. Great band.
The ironic-ization aspect really kicks in for me here. I find the early covers up to Between the Buttons better than the later covers.

It is true that some album covers are strange or downright ugly, but I think that is what makes the charm of certain choices made by the artists, it is a bit like the musical tastes some will like and others no.
